The Honey Grove Post
Office and Postal Employees
hosted their Annual Food Drive
Wednesday, May 13 to donate
to non-perishable foods to the
local Food Pantry.
Prior notice was given to all
who receives mail via the
Honey Grove Post Office, asking to leave non-perishables at
the site of their mailbox

were then collected and delivered to the local food pantry

Mailbox Improvement Week is May 17-23
Postmaster White is asking
all Honey Grove homeowners
to inspect and repair their mailboxes
during
Mailbox
Improvement Week, May 1723. “Repairing suburban and
rural mailboxes improves the
appearance of our community
and makes delivering and
receiving mail safer for our
carriers and customers,” White
says.
The Postal Service makes
this annual request because of
Jesse White
the wear and tear that occurs to
mailboxes every year. “This is
especially important because of
the effects of the summer and
winter weather we had this past
year,” he adds.
Some of the typical activities
that need to be done include:
* Replacing loose hinges on
a mailbox door.
* Repainting a mailbox that
may have rusted or started peeling.
* Remounting a mailbox post
if loosened.
* Replacing or adding house
numbers.
“If a homeowner plans to
install a new mailbox or replace
a worn one, he/she must use
Postal Service - approved traditional, contemporary or locking
full/limited service mailboxes,”
said White. “Customers should
be careful when purchasing
curbside mail receptacles
because the use of unapproved
boxes is prohibited.”

Flags to be Placed for MEMORIAL DAY
The Honey Grove VFW honors veterans on Memorial Day by
placing flags on the graves of veterans at a number of cemeteries in
the eastern part of the County. This year a total of 990 flags will be
placed from Shiloh to Windom to Dial.
Flags will be placed at Oakwood and Cedar Hill on Saturday
morning, May 23, and volunteers are needed that morning for the
556 flags for Oakwood and 52 flags for Cedar Hill. Just arrive at
the cemeteries that morning around 7:00 to pitch in for this work to
honor our veterans.
Plan to visit the local cemeteries during the Memorial Day weekend and see how lovely they look with the flags. The flags will be
removed on Tuesday morning, May 26 (and yes, volunteers are also
needed that day).

The picture of the marine is
one of my dad, Elmer Maurice
Eaton. This picture, taken from
a clipped frame of a newsreel,
was sent to all the movie houses
in the United States upon the
invasion of Iwo Jima by the 5th
Marine Corp Division. The film
clip, obtained by my mother
(Mary Ann Eaton) was shown
at a double feature movie she
had gone to see in Honey
Grove, Texas. As was the custom of the time, the newsreel
footage of World War II was
generally shown between
movies. When the newsreel of
Iwo Jima was run on this particular day, my mother was
shocked to see a close up picture of my father as the first
wave of marines invaded Iwo
Jima.
The Marine Corp
infantrymen were going ashore
from the various battleships and
other transports which had carried them to the small heavily
fortified island. All her friends,
of curse, recognized my dad.
The owner and operator of the
movie house also recognized
my dad. After the second feature, the movie house owner ran
the newsreel again. He then
came out into the audience to
find my mother as he knew her
personally. At that point he took
her to the back of the movie
house and gave her a clip from
the newsreel. From that clip she
had this still picture printed, and
it has been with her all these
years. It was indeed a quirk of
fate that out of all the thousands
and thousands of brave young
men who stared death in the
face to go ashore in the invasion
of Iwo Jima, the news cameraman picked my dad's face to
focus upon thereby, giving us a
piece of history that my family
will keep forever.
Newsreel footage of the
invasion of Iwo Jima is sparse.
Almost any documentary ever
assembled on Iwo Jima has this
close up shot of my dad's face
during the invasion. A few
years ago, Ed McMahon assembled a brilliant piece on Iwo
Jima, and in that clip my dad is
shown several times.
We consider ourselves lucky
to be in possession of this photograph. This picture stands for
all the things that we hold so
dearly in our hearts. Honor,
courage, heroism, and love for
one's country is depicted. As we
share this picture with you, we
truly hope that we can all
observe a brief moment of
silence and reverence in our
hearts for all the brave men and
women who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
Due in large part to their efforts,
we now enjoy unparalleled freedom on this earth.

A lot of folks my age and
some younger remember growing up without the TV. Shoot,
we didn’t even have computers.
There were some in existence,
but they took up a whole building. As far as phones, lots of
people had them, but they were
for important news, not to just
pass the time of day. Most of
the time when it would ring you
wondered who in the family had
died or was in a grave condition.
Televisions were in existence,
but they were pretty fuzzy, not
much programming, and so
high priced only the very rich
could afford them.
The radio was pretty common and came in different price
ranges, so almost everyone
could afford one.
We had a real nice
radio/record player combination. It was like a piece of furniture, about 2 ½ ft wide, 3 foot
tall, and about 2 foot thick. The
top part was radio and the middle part pulled out an was a
record player.
We had all the singles and
albums that were put out by
Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzel,
Webb Pierce, Kitty Wells and a
lot of others. They called it
Hillbilly music back then.
But the main source of entertainment was the radio. They
had programs just like TV does
now, except a whole lot cleaner
and family friendly.
I remember Momma setting
up her ironing board, (yes you
ironed clothes back in the day).
Early afternoons were the soap
operas, the only one I remember
was Stella Dallas, and poor old
Stella lived a troubled life.
There were others but I can’t
remember the names.
Then late afternoons was my
time of the day. There was The
Lone Ranger, Tom Mix and I
think one called The Green
Hornet. If the weather wasn’t
fit to be outside, I would be on
the floor by the radio.
Then at night we tried to
have supper over before 7:00,
that was when One Man’s
Family came on and we all had
our places in the living room to
sit and listen. After that I can’t
remember the order, but there
was Fibber McGee and Molly,
Amos and Andy. It seems like
Jack Benny came on. He had a
hard time keeping up with
Rochester.
Saturday and Sunday were
the more popular shows.
Gunsmoke, Dragnet. There was
one called The Shadow. The tag
line was “Who knows what evil
lurks in the mind of men, The
Shadow Knows.”
Then television sets became
cheaper and lots of folks began
getting the TV. A lot of radio
shows went to TV. Some were
successful, and some not.
Some other radio and TV
shows I remember were Our
Miss Brooks, Burns and Allen,
The Great Gildersleeve, and
The Life of Riley. I know some
of you remember others, but
those are some that stick in my
mind.
These days, can you imagine
a whole family gathered together around a radio, or a whole
family gathered together for
anything except a holiday or
funeral? Even then, there will
be two or more carrying on a
conversation on the cell phone,
or texting or playing a game.
No time to talk to the people
you are with. What a shame.
How many times have we said
or heard, “If I only had said….”
or “I wish I had spent more time
with them”.
Yes, times were a lot simpler
when I was growing up. A lot of
things I wish had never
changed. Just an old fella’s
opinion.

82/287 Yard Sale in North
Texas and Southern Oklahoma
on June 5th and 6th. There will
be yard sales, garage sales, sidewalk sales, farmers markets and
flea markets all along 425 miles
of the Highway 82 and
Highway 287 corridors and
beyond!
Honey Grove and surrounding community residents have
two opportunities to participate.
The chamber is again registering sales for folks who want to
have their garage/yard sale at
their home or business. Let us
know and we will put your location on our SALE MAP. There
is no charge for registering your
sale with the chamber. It is just
ensures that your sale will be
advertised. But we do need your
information as soon as possible.
The deadline to be included on
the map is May 31.
The chamber will have a
welcome station set up on the
downtown square this year.
There, we will welcome all visitors through our town and give

Jimmy Lynn Doyle was born
October 8, 1934 to Roy H.
Doyle and Mattie Frances
Cunningham Doyle. His only
brother, Billy Roy was born in
1933. He attended school in
Honey Grove, graduating in
1953.
He also earned a
Bachelor’s
Degree
from
E.T.S.T.C. in 1957. He also
earned a Master’s Degree from
E.T.S.U. in 1961.
He began his teaching career
in 1959 in the small north Texas
town of Frisco. He later taught
at Mesquite, Richardson and
Honey Grove. He was principal
of Honey Grove Elementary
from 1976 to 1986. He was
then elected county judge in
1986 and served in that position
until January 1, 1997. He loved
both careers that he had. He also
served in the United States
Army from 1957 to 1959.
During Jimmy’s career he
was very active in the First
Baptist Church of Honey
Grove, serving as a deacon and
Sunday School Teacher. He
was also a member of Honey
Grove Masonic Lodge #164
A.F.& A.M. serving as Master
of the Lodge and District
Deputy. He was a past president of the Honey Grove
Chamber of Commerce, Honey
Grove Lions Club and Windom
Lions Club. He was past secretary of Honey Grove Chamber
and Honey Grove Lions Club.
Jimmy also served as the Mayor
of Honey Grove and as a board
member of the Honey Grove
ISD. He was also a board member of Farmers and Merchants
State Bank and served as president of the Honey Grove
Industrial Foundation. He also
served as a member of Bonham
Industrial Foundation while he
was county judge.
He was preceded in death by
a wife, Mary Ida Doyle and his
parents. He is survived by his
wife, Mary Elizabeth Doyle of
Honey Grove; children, Cynthia
Doyle of Fulsher, TX, Leanne
and husband Billy Euler of Las
Vegas, NV and son Dirk and
wife Stacie Doyle of Caddo
Mills, TX. Step-Children Jeff
and wife Kelli Barnett of Honey
Grove, Aaron and wife Lisa
Smith of Kilgore, TX and
Theresa Barnett of Sherman,
TX and 11 grandchildren, 3
great-grandchildren and many
nieces and nephews.

Eva Joyce Dyer, 81 of
Argyle, Texas, passed away
Wednesday morning, May 13,
2015 at her residence. Services
were held Saturday, May 16,
2015 at 10:30 A.M. at CooperSorrells Funeral Home Chapel
in Honey Grove, Texas. Rev.
Kevin
Towery
presided.
Grandsons served as pallbearers
and interment followed at
Allens Point Cemetery. There
was no formal visitation time.
Mrs. Dyer will lie in state at the
funeral home during normal
business hours.
Mrs. Dyer was born on
September 4, 1933 to Joe C. and
Eva Belle (Thompson) Parrish,
in Coppell, Texas. She married
Arthur Joe Dyer on March 9,
1962 in Lewisville, Texas. She
spent most of her life in
Coppell, but also lived in Honey
Grove and Argyle for several
years. She attended Coppell
First Assembly of God Church
and the Allens Point Baptist
Church. She was a mother, wife
and homemaker, but she cooked
many years in the Coppell and
Argyle school cafeterias.
She is survived by children,
Billy Eugene Fine, Clyde
Richard Fine, Roger Allen &
wife, Becky Fine, Charles Lee
& wife, Lovera Dyer all of
Argyle, Texas, Beverly Fine of
Honey Grove, Shirley & husband, Danny Lee of Lewisville,
Texas, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by
sisters JoAnn Dyer, Dorothy
Wall, Rosie Phillips and Doris
Holly, along with many nieces
and nephews.
Mrs. Dyer was preceded in
death by her parents, husband,
brother Billy Frank Parrish and
a son Bobby Joe Fine.
The family is planning a
Graveside Rose Ceremony after
the service and request that if
flowers are sent, please send
long stemmed rose in vases for
this purpose.

Michael (Mike) Hugh Owens,
69, of Ladonia, passed away
Tuesday, May 12, 2015 in
Greenville.
Funeral services were held at
2:00 PM Friday, May 15, 2015
in the Delta Funeral Home
Chapel with Rev. Jeromy
Connell and Rev. Reuben
Trussell officiating. Interment
followed in the Center Point
Cemetery with military honors.
The family received friends
Friday from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at
the funeral home.
Mr. Owens was born in
Commerce on June 21, 1945,
the son of Cleveland McMillan
Owens
and
Anna
Lee
Montgomery Owens. He was a
veteran of the U.S. Army and
was a retired car salesman.
He is survived by a son;
Michael H. Owens, Jr. and his
wife Krista of Pflugerville, a
daughter; Kacey Pauler and her
husband Brandon of Cypress, a
sister; Peggy Franklin and her
husband Doug of Ladonia, a
grandson; Landry Owens, three
granddaughters;
Kason,
Madison, and Emerson Pauler,
and his forme wife; Nancy
Stricklen.
He wa preceded in death by
his parents and a brother; Billy
Don Owens.
Pallbearers will be Bill
Wilson, James Reel, Johnny
Braley, Larry Joe Braley, Syl
Dean Davis, and Ed Pickard,
honorary pallbearers will be

Eulogist and Rev. Cedric
Barksdale officiating.
Visitation was held on
Tuesday, May 19, 2015, from
4:00 until 8:00 p.m., at
Christian Chapel C.M.E. in
Honey Grove.

Lee Ola Chaffin 70, of
Honey Grove passed away on
Wednesday, May 13, 2015, at
home surrounded by her loving
family.
Lee Ola was born in Fannin
County on October 17, 1944, to
Zelema and Julius L. Allen. She
was married to James Lee
Chaffin and they shared more
than 40 years together.
She was a faithful member of
Christian Chapel C.M.E in
Honey Grove where she sang in
the choir and took part in the
ladies auxiliary until her health
began to fail. Lee Ola loved her
grandchildren and was a "community granny"
Survivors include her husband James, her mother Zelema
Allen, her sons: Brent Johnson
(L 'Shawn), of Honey Grove,
TX. and Jason Johnson
(Courtney), of Oklahoma City,
OK., her daughters: Sharon
Johnson, of Honey Grove,

Once again there have been
losses affecting those in this
area.
Our deepest sympathy goes
out to the family of Mike Owens
whose funeral services were
held in the Cooper Delta
Funeral Chapel Friday May
15th at 2:00 p. m. Mike was
born and grew up here and
touched many lives.
Jimmy Doyle was also
known and liked in this area. He
passed away and funeral services were held for him at First
Baptist Church in Honey Grove
May 19th at 2:00 p. m. Our
thoughts and prayers go out to
the family and many friends of
Mr. Doyle.
Following a long illness, the
grandmother
of
Brandi
Davenport,
Mrs. Dorothy Kaczak,
passed away May 15th. Services
for her were held in Dallas.
Condolences go to Brandi and
Jarrod Davenport and family
and other family members.
The Van tornado hit home
also, since the son and grandson
of former residents, Robby
Parish and his wife, lost their
house and everything in it. By
the grace of God they were not
injured. Robby was a coach and
teacher at Van, his father, the
late Jimmy Parish, was a coach
and teacher, and his grandfather
Freeman Parish was the girls
basketball coach at Ladonia and
took them to the state playoffs
more than once. Both Robby’s
parents, Jimmy Parish and Betty
Clements graduated from LHS
and his grandmother, the late
Mary Jim Clements, was the
school secretary. Although we
sympathize with them in the
loss of their home and contents
and the school in Van, we
rejoice that they came through
the storm alive and well.
Thoughts and prayers are with
the residents of Van and the
people of Nepal where earthquakes are still happening.
Sunday was Mother’s Day.
Each year Wanetha Jones children attend worship services
with her at First Baptist, and it is
always good to see Karen and
Ed Pickard, John Jones and
Ricky Jones in the congregation. They had the family all
together on Saturday as Cary
and Lyndsey Pickard Gable and
son, Titus needed to be at their
home Church in Mount Vernon
on Sunday. After worship services Sunday the children took
Wanetha out to eat.
The family of Tom and Oma
Hulsey met at their home for
Mothers Day, with Lesa and
Greg preparing the food.
Tuesday there were others present for a good visit and a good
lunch. Fred and Jane Hulsey
were there from Wylie, Jim and
Nancy Massey were there from
Kansas, Martha Shaw from
Ladonia and Charles Hornsby, a
cousin (the late Delbert and Ima
Nell Hornsby’s son) from Wolfe
City, and others.
After attending worship
services at Ladonia Church of
Christ Granville Fields of Pecan
Gap and Kerry, Tracy, Cameron
and
Allyson
Crews
of
Commerce went home with
Ricky and Martha Crews for a
Mothers Day dinner and visit.
