SELECTION
January 14th marked an important day
for German photojournalist Cathleen
Naundorf. The artist made her New York
debut at Edwynn Houk Gallery showing
her enchanting photos that will be exhibited until February 27th.
The exhibition displays a selection of
works from several of the artist’s series
including Un rêve de mode and L’Arche
de Noé. Drawing from a range of influences, including her background in
painting, travel photojournalism, and
fashion photography, in addition to her
longstanding mentorship with photographer Horst P. Horst, Naundorf photographs one of a kind couture fashion
brands, positioned within rich otherworldly scenes that the artist carefully
constructs.

Naundorf’s photographs reference an appreciation for the antique and handmade.
The enfant prodige from Weisenfels — who
started very young with watercolour and
switched to the camera at ten years old, using her grandfather as a model — has a very
poetic way of channelling the light on film,
and transforming the outcome in a unique
piece of art. Naundorf works primarily in
large format Polaroid film, a tool that demonstrates her connection to the fashion world.
However, her experience photographing the
native cultures of Mongolia, Siberia, and the
Amazon have given an inexplicable depth to
the tales she captures through her lens.

Her talent as a globetrotting photojournalist conquered the heart of
Condé Nast in the late nineties, when
she was called to photograph the
backstage at Paris fashion shows.
Briefly after she would start adopting
her trademark: Polaroid and large
format cameras. From 2005 to 2011,
Naundorf undertook the epic series
Un rêve de mode for which the artist gained unprecedented access
to the couturiers’ archives of fashion houses, such as Chanel, Dior,
Gaultier, Valentino, Saab, Lacroix,
and Philip Treacy in order to create her elaborate and cinematic images. In 2012 Prestel published the
series in the limited edition monograph, Haute Couture: The Polaroids
of Cathleen Naundorf. Since 2011,
Naundorf has worked privately with
Mr. Valentino Garavani on several
projects including An Italian Story
and the photo-documentation of Mr.
Garavani’s collaboration with the
New York City Ballet, and her work
is consistently featured on the pages
of Harper’s Bazaar and Condé Nast
publications.

Cathleen, who lives between London and Paris,
is adamant about not using the film as a quick
study tool. She prefers to embrace the saturated
colour and unique textures of the medium for
her finished works. Therefore the women that
populate her photographs — wearing the intricate haute-couture designs — acquire a tantalising magnetism. Her work presents a surrealist world, rich with intrigue, which suggests a
romantic aesthetic of a forgotten age.
Naundorf has the ability to manipulate the inherent composition and colour intermixture
found in each photograph, to further enhance
the painterly atmosphere and surface quality of
her prints, using her own unique development
process. The ultimate result is an analog photograph resembling a mixed media decoupage
that encloses a mysterious and timely fairy tale
waiting to be disclosed.

GAUGING SQUARE
At the heart of London Dock, Gauging Square is set to become
one of the capital’s great public squares, with a spectacular
water feature inspired by Le Miroir d’eau, a water mirror at the
Place de la Bourse in Bordeaux. Gauging Square will revisit
London Dock’s historic trading links through a contemporary
architectural interpretation of this classic French square - as a
landmark and a place to enjoy.

vibrant new design with historic elements in a rich tapestry of

As a Leading Hotels of the World establishment, the Hôtel Hermitage has been renovated
entirely since 2003, and now boasts two new
floors. Built in the early 1900s by Monegasque
architect Jean Marquet, and joining Société
des Bains de Mer (SBM) in 1928, the national monument doubling as a palace was redesigned by Pierre-Yves Rochon when he restored the property back to its former Belle
Epoque glory. The interior designer capitalized on the available space and light to produce a warm but chic environment that is
characteristically French, with an open sea
view from all five wings, just steps away from
Casino Square.

The place to stay
Among the jewels in the Hermitage crown are
its Diamond Suites that come à la carte with vast
floor space, Jacuzzis, and other beau monde
amenities. On the top of the Excelsior wing
fans out a 361 m2 Penthouse Diamond Suite
that boasts a 360 degree view of Hercules Port,
the sea, and Monaco rock. If you’re looking for
the best panorama in town coupled with high
lux and privacy, this is it. In the Prince Wing,
the Diamond Duplex Suite extends 200 m2 but
shows off with a solarium and a Jacuzzi. It’s no

Since its founding in 1863, SBM has added four
luxury hotels to its quiver: the iconic Hôtel de
Paris, the Hôtel Hermitage, Monte Carlo Beach,

Manager of Hôtel Hermitage, Pascal Camia,
who has recently assumed management of the
Monaco Casinos, says that regular guests prefer

right at home. “There’s no doubt that Hôtel Paris
is the place to be seen,” he explained, adding,
“but Hôtel Hermitage is the place to stay. It is
romantic and cosy; it’s about wellness and cocooning. Here we look equally after the needs

kids) programme tailor made to help families
“maintain their habits in an idyllic setting with

Embodying its tagline, ‘Excellence,

Mr. Camia counts on three fundamental
management pillars at SBM: excellence,

Mr. Camia’s strategy for the future? “Asia is
a target market today, and we are looking
to attract high rollers from China, specifically,” he said, mentioning the challenges that come with hosting a demographic

rethinking how we are going to accommodate Asian food into our menus without sacrificing our native fare.” An obstacle faced by more than just SBM.
A tradition of festivities
Monaco’s menu of tantalizing treats goes
heavy on entertainment. There’s Art Monaco
and the International Monte Carlo Circus
Festival in January, Printemps des Arts in
March-April, the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters
in April and the Monaco Grand Prix in May.
Look for the Monaco Red Cross Gala and
the Monte Carlo Sporting Summer Festival
in July-August, the Monaco Yacht Show in
September, and the Monte Carlo Jazz Festival
in November to launch a fairy-tale Christmas
season in the country where glamorous
dreams are wont to come true.
Over 30 yachts are expected to attend the Loro
Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and
Rendezvous annual event taking place from
March 9 -12 in Virgin Gorda, British Virgin
Islands, which marks the start of the 2016 sporting season for the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.
More than 20 sailing superyachts have registered to compete over three days on the
spectacular coastal courses offered by the
Caribbean archipelago known as “nature’s little secret”. With steady trade winds of around
18-20 knots and racing regulated by the OrcSy
superyacht handicapping rule, the regatta is
renowned as much for the high levels of competition among participants vying for the Loro
Piana Prize: Boat International Media Trophy,
as for its sumptuous location and exclusive social events.
Veteran competitors eager to
build on past successes will be
the 34-metre Nilaya, winner of
the 2014 edition, and the Perini
Navi fast sloop P2, division winner in 2015. The 46-metre Duboisdesigned Ganesha, two-time winner of the Porto Cervo edition of the
event, will be looking to conquer
the Caribbean waters, while the
33-metre Inoui, built by the Vitters
shipyard, will be doing its best to
improve on last year’s second-indivision ranking. Hetairos, at 66.7
metres in length the largest yacht
in the fleet, is another competitor
returning to the waters off Virgin
Gorda after placing fourth in her
division in 2014.

Yachts new to the event this year and sure to make
a splash include the 45-metre Perini Navi sloop
Clan VIII, the Swan 90 Odin as well as the newly launched 46-metre Unfurled, a performance
sloop from the Vitters shipyard christened in
winter 2015 and making her regatta debut at the
Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and
Rendezvous. Another winter 2015 launch making her first regatta appearance will be the 38.8
metre Atalante from Claasen.
For participating owners and guests, a
well-heeled social programme with welcome cocktails, the exclusive Loro Piana
Owners’ Dinner, and the final prize giving
held at the YCCS Clubhouse overlooking
the North Sound.
The motoryacht Rendezvous is sponsored by Westport this year and will feature a selection of luxury yachts cruising
in company each day to watch racing
and sample the beautiful coves and
opulent hideaways of the British Virgin
Islands.

Chairman of the Board Kenneth Cole were
among those who gathered at the 18th annual amfAR New York Gala to pay tribute
to legendary Academy Award-winning film
producer Harvey Weinstein for his longtime
support of amfAR and exceptional contributions to the global struggle against HIV/
AIDS. The event, presented by Harry Winston,
raised over US$2 million for amfAR’s life-saving AIDS research programme.

Harvey Weinstein for his enormous contributions to the important causes of our time,
particularly the fight against AIDS, because
“if the conquest of AIDS requires people who
can move mountains, we should all be grateful that Harvey Weinstein is on our side.”

Robert De Niro presented the amfAR Award of
Courage to Harvey Weinstein with a heartfelt
personal tribute, noting that it is “our good
fortune that he puts the same passion, creativity, and devotion” that he puts into his
films into his philanthropy. De Niro also introduced a video recognising Weinstein for
his philanthropic endeavours and featuring
remarks from friends Nicole Kidman, Matt
Damon, Naomi Watts, Idris Elba, Anna Wintour,
Kerry Washington, and Queen Latifah. Accepting
the award, Weinstein, whose leadership of amfAR’s
Cinema Against AIDS Gala in Cannes has helped
raise $170million since 1993, stated that “when the
disease ends, my job ends, too.”
The evening also featured two spectacular live performances. Grammynominated British pop sensation Charli
XCX performed an explosive set of
her top hits Doing It and Boom Clap.
Swedish duo Icona Pop ended the
evening and kept the crowd on their
feet dancing to their hits Emergency
and I Love It, during which Charli XCX
joined them on stage.
Host Chris Rock opened the 88th Academy
Awards, presented by the Academy of Motion
Pictures Arts and Sciences, at the Dolby Theater
in Hollywood. Rock entertained with a highly
anticipated monologue amid the controversy
“Oscars So White”, addressing the lack of diversity amongst the nominees in an amusing
way.

Gonzalez Inarritu, who was awarded 2016’s Best
director statue.

The Best supporting actor statue went
to Mark Rylance for his outstanding
performance in Steven Spielberg’s Bridge
of Spies. The award for Best actress in a
Leading Role went to Brie Larson for her
heartbreaking interpretation in Room.
But the queen of the night was actress
Alicia Vikander, winner of the Oscar for
Best supporting actress with the film The
Danish Girl. The charming Swedish talent
was enchanting, dressed in the fairytale
soft yellow hue Louis Vuitton dress of
the Spring ‘16 runway, as she made her
acceptance speech.

Other beauties that stunned this year’s Oscar

Spotlight Cast & Crew accept the award for
Best Picture at 88th Annual Academy Awards.
The movie Spotlight brought home Oscars for
Best Picture and Best original screenplay, whilst
The Best short went to Benjamin Cleary & Serena
Armitage for Stutterer. Best adapted screenplay
was awarded to Charles Randolph and Adam
McKay for The Big Short, Inside Out won Best
animated film, and Best animated short went
to Bear Story. Amy won Best documentary and
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy won her second Oscar
for Best short documentary with A Girl in the
River: The Price of Forgiveness. Soon after her
movie was made, Pakistani prime minister said he
would change the law on honour killings, “that
is the power of film,” said Obaid-Chinoy and
added “this is what happens when determined
women get together.” Best visual effects went
to the movie Ex Machina and the Best foreign
language film was Son of Saul directed by
Laszlo Nemes, this marked the second Oscar
and ninth nomination for Hungary.

Amongst the highlights of the 88th
Academy Awards Ceremony was
Lady Gaga’s performance of the
song ‘Til It Happens to You’ (that
she co-wrote with Diane Warren
for the documentary The Hunting
Ground, that focused on campus
rapes), moved the audience to tears.

It is a truth universally acknowledged
that any bon vivant who happens to be
in London, will swing by the exceptional venue, which operated as a gentlemen’s club between the late nineteenth
century throughout the twentieth century: The St James Club. The history books
have tributed the building that hosted diplomats, aristocrats, writers (such
as Ian Fleming), along with those who
would enjoy a good chess match. After
the Second World War, the gentlemen’s
clubs of London fell into decline, including the St. James Club, which merged
with the Brook’s Club in 1978. But in
the course of time the original club was
transformed into a luxury 5 star 60 bedroom central London townhouse hotel.
Located in a quiet cul-de-sac close to
Piccadilly and near the prestigious Mayfair
area, the hotel really is a hidden gem whilst
being ideally situated within central London.
St James provides the perfect base for shopping, sightseeing, culture, as well as business
meetings or events. The fabulous Penthouse
suites and the guest room terraces, are furnished with stylish, sleek, contemporary yet
elegant interiors, finished with handmade
silk wallpaper, black lacquered furniture,
handcrafted Murano glass chandeliers and
polished natural stone in the bathroom. The
praise goes to the interior designer Anne
Maria Jagdfeld, who has created a fine harmony between contemporary interiors and
the elegance of the Victorian building.

The allure of the St James Club & Hotel
satisfies visitors’ hunger for excellent
cuisine and the arts. In fact, the club
boasts an extensive private art collection of more than 400 paintings, pictures
and sculptures, called “The Rosenstein
Collection” dated 1920-1950. The collection was carefully selected to complement the hotel’s elegant design and
exclusive fabrics and relates to the original exhibitions in British private members clubs, but with a modern twist.
The key focus has been on sourcing art
from Scandinavia, France, Germany,
Austria, The Netherlands and the UK;
featuring a broad selection of different techniques, colours and textures.
This carefully appointed and original
art collection made up of 20th century paintings includes fine examples of
Impressionist, Expressionist and Cubist
oeuvres, which guests can enjoy in the
hotel’s public rooms as well as in the
privacy of their own suites.

Once the appetite of the soul is satisfied,
guests can attain as much fulfilment with their
taste buds, since the hotel’s One Michelin

Chef, William Drabble. William oversees all
aspects of the dining concept at the hotel,
including private dining, room service and
the hotel’s more informal yet stylish dining
space, William’s Bar & Bistro. William worked
in some of England’s most influential Michelin
starred hotels and restaurants before joining St James’ Hotel and Club as Executive
Chef to launch in 2009 the hotel’s restaurant
named ‘Seven Park Place.’ The dishes are
modern French in style but made up of primarily British ingredients and have gained so
much success that the restaurant in 2011 was
awarded a coveted Michelin star and four AA
Rosettes. If you want to relish in Drabble’s signature dishes we recommend the following:
Ravioli of langoustine, cabbage and truffle
butter sauce; Best end of Lune valley lamb
with confit potatoes, caramelised onion and

Chef Brett Graham, originally from Newcastle, Australia, trained with British stalwart Phil Howard at The Square before opening The Ledbury in the west London
suburb of Notting Hill in 2005. The airy restaurant is redolent with discreet luxury,
as is the menu, which features truffles and foie gras alongside humbler ingredients that are accorded equal respect, such as jowl of pork with fennel, mousserons and elderflower honey or the salt baked turnips served with Herdwick lamb.
