BIG ASS SPOTLIGHT: BOYD METALS SEES BIG ASS BENEFITS Boyd Metals, a full-line steel service center with locations in three states, first contacted Big Ass Fans to improve its air circulation. Impressed with the results, Boyd turned to Big Ass Light to solve another problem, too. THE PROBLEM Every day at Boyd Metals, large quantities of metal arrive from mills to be stored, processed, and distributed to customers. With so much material traveling through all kinds of weather, it’s inevitable that trucks bring in some water too. And in spring, when the cold metal meets the warmer air inside, the product begins to sweat, leading to corrosion, safety hazards and lost profit. Boyd wanted a way to circulate the air so that its bays dried more quickly. THE SOLUTION “WITH BIG ASS FANS AND BIG ASS LIGHTS, THE DIFFERENCE IS NIGHT & DAY. THE GUYS JUST LOVE THEM!” Tom Kennon, Boyd Metals President After considering various options, Boyd Metals installed a 24-ft Powerfoil®X2.0 by Big Ass Fans® at their Joplin, Mo., location as a trial run. “We saw the results,” says Corporate Operations Manager Steve Kindle. “It reduced moisture on the product and dried the floor faster.” The company compared the drying rates in neighboring bays. The one with the Big Ass Fan dried in about four and a half hours. The bay without a fan took a day and a half to dry. The company was also impressed by how much less rust developed on tubing stored nearby. It has since invested in more Big Ass Fans, which save them money by protecting their product and benefit employees, too. “We were able to get rid of the small floor fans,” says Kindle, “and that increases productivity and morale — employees aren’t spending all their time standing by their fans.” SCOTT MOODY: (813) 352-0176 | [email protected] OVERVIEW: 4 locations 11 Big Ass Fans 97 Big Ass Light THE RESULTS: Safety Condensation Reduction Productivity Employee Morale Energy Savings Quality CONTINUED GROWTH Kindle says that because the fans exceeded expectations, they turned to Big Ass Light when they decided to replace their metal halides, “energy monsters” that provided inadequate light and needed frequent maintenance. The company installed 26,000lumen Big Ass High Bay LEDs in two of its plants. “The difference is night and day,” says Boyd Metals President Tom Kennon. “The lights are twice as bright, and the instanton is far superior to metal halides.” Kennon says the LEDs make the workplace safer. And with the LEDs’ energy efficiency, he expects a big change in his energy bills, too.
