Edinburgh Castle is Scotland’s symbol of power, protection and majesty. It stands high on an extinct volcano with panoramic views of one of Europe’s finest capital cities. Stirling Castle was once the favoured residence of Scottish kings, queens and nobles. Overlooking the waters of Loch Ness and the mountains beyond, Urquhart Castle enjoys a spectacular Highland location. We have visitor attractions all over Scotland from the Borders to the Highlands and Islands. These castles, cathedrals, palaces, abbeys and so much more are a must-see for anyone visiting Scotland. The castle guards the Scottish Crown Jewels and the Stone of Destiny. Its many highlights include the Great Hall, Royal Apartments, Scottish National War Memorial and three military museums. The ‘Prisons of War’ exhibition recalls the era when the castle held captured sailors from enemy nations, such as the newly independent USA. Other sights and sounds include the firing of the One o’Clock Gun and the oldest building in Edinburgh, St Margaret’s Chapel. edinburghcastle.gov.uk Today at Stirling Castle, you too can visit the magnificent Renaissance Palace of James V. The royal apartments inside the palace have been returned to how they may have looked in the 1540s, when they were the childhood home of Mary, Queen of Scots. And the castle, with its fabulous Great Hall and Chapel Royal, is one of the country’s top places to visit. Sitting on a huge volcanic rock, it has superb views of the battlefields of Stirling Bridge and Bannockburn where William Wallace and Robert the Bruce won great victories in the Wars of Independence against England. stirlingcastle.gov.uk From clan feuds to Jacobite uprisings, this once mighty fortress has had a turbulent history. The last soldiers marched away in 1692, blowing up part of the castle as they left. But while the armies have long-since vanished, Urquhart’s ruins remain a proud and spectacular reminder of the past. The story of the castle and the families who lived within its powerful walls is told in the impressive visitor centre. There is a fascinating display of artefacts plus an audiovisual presentation to enjoy. historic-scotland.gov.uk/places Many are set in fabulous countryside, while others are at the heart of picturesque towns or great cities. These places have witnessed great events; some have been home to kings and queens – all have played a unique part in our rich and colourful past; over 5,000 years of history. historic-scotland.gov.uk/places Iona Abbey Duff House Elgin Cathedral explorer pass & map Plan your journey to Scotland’s past Stand 2016 These examples of savings are for demonstration purposes.
