The Collalto Family and the Castle of San Salvatore
Di antichissima origine longobarda, i Collalto affondano
le radici della loro storia nella Marca Trevigiana. Attorno
all’anno Mille governano, col titolo di conti di Treviso, la
città stessa; tra il XII e il XIII secolo si stabiliscono tra le
Prealpi e il Piave fondando i castelli di Collalto e di San
Salvatore.
Il castello di San Salvatore si espande velocemente ed
arriva alla fine del Medioevo, con i suoi trentamila metri
quadrati tra rocca e borgo, ad essere uno dei più estesi del
nord Italia.
Inespugnato per tutto il Medioevo, durante la lunga pax
veneziana il castello vede la fioritura di una straordinaria
stagione artistica: arrivano a San Salvatore pittori, poeti,
musicisti e letterati. La Cappella Vecchia accoglie lo
straordinario ciclo di affreschi del Pordenone, mentre
i palazzi si arricchiscono di opere dei grandi maestri
veneti dell’epoca. La bellezza e la magnificenza del
castello diventano lo sfondo di celebri dipinti di Cima da
Conegliano.
Ospite dei Collalto nell’Abbazia di Nervesa, Monsignor
Giovanni della Casa compone il suo celebre “Galateo”. E tra
le “selve d’arbori e fronde” Gaspara Stampa, la più grande
poetessa del Cinquecento, canta nelle sue meravigliose
“Rime” il suo straziante amore per il conte Collaltino.
Of the most ancient Lombard descent, the Collalto Family
takes its origin from the March of Treviso. Around the
year 1000, they ruled the city with the title of Counts of
Treviso. Between the twelfth and the thirteenth century,
they settled in the territory stretching from the Prealps to
the Piave River and built the castles of Collalto and San
Salvatore.
The Castle of San Salvatore was soon widely expanded thus
becoming by the end of the Middle Ages one of the biggest
in Northern Italy, the castle and the village covering three
thousand square meters.
Unconquered all throughout the medieval times, the castle
witnessed the bloom of an incredible artistic season during
the long period of the Venetian Pax, with many painters,
poets, musicians and writers coming to visit and stay.
Pordenone painted an extraordinary cycle of frescoes in the
old chapel, while the works of other great Venetian masters
of the time enriched the palaces. Cima da Conegliano used
the beauty and magnificence of the castle as background
for his famous paintings.
While staying with the Collaltos at the Abbey of Nervesa,
Monsignor Giovanni della Casa composed his renowned
Galateo. And among the “woods of trees and foliage”
Gaspara Stampa, the greatest female poet of the sixteenth
century, sang her heart-rending love for Count Collaltino
throughout her beautiful Rime.
All’inizio del seicento sorge la chiesa di Santa Croce, rivolta
verso il borgo attraverso un loggiato dal sapore sansovinesco
e nel secolo dei Lumi il conte Odoardo fa erigere un nuovo
palazzo. Ma il novecento è alle porte con la prima guerra
mondiale: il Piave fa da sfondo alle ultime cruente battaglie
ed il castello diventa bersaglio dell’artiglieria italiana. Nel
1918 San Salvatore presenta un paesaggio desolante: i
palazzi sono gravemente danneggiati, come pure le mura
e il borgo.
Ma il castello riprende vita: il conte Rambaldo avvia
una appassionata fase di recupero dello straordinario
patrimonio storico-artistico, per secoli difeso con tenacia
e amore. Un ininterrotto cantiere prosegue fino alle soglie
del nuovo millennio, in cui il castello di San Salvatore e le
sue terre vengono definitivamente riconsegnate alla storia
in tutto il loro splendore.
At the beginning of the seventeenth century the Church
of Santa Croce was erected to overlook the small village
through an open gallery of Sansovinian flavor. During the
Enlightenment Period, Count Odoardo built a new palace.
But the twentieth century was just round the corner
bringing with it the First World War: the Piave River was
the setting for the bloodiest battles of the Great War and
the castle became the target of the Italian artillery. In
1918 San Salvatore was a bleak view: the palaces had been
seriously damaged, as had the walls and the small village.
But the castle renovated back to life: Count Rambaldo
started a passionate resurrection program for restoring the
extraordinary historical and artistic heritage that had been
defended for centuries with perseverance and love. The
estate turned into a permanent site till the threshold of the
new millennium, when the castle of San Salvatore with the
surrounding land was definitely re-consigned to history in
all its splendor.

Nel settecento l’ambizioso conte Odoardo, volendo competere con l’altera nobiltà
veneziana alla carica di doge, fa costruire all’interno del castello un imponente
palazzo, quale grandiosa dimostrazione del proprio potere. Dota il palazzo di
un elegante scalone con balaustra adornata da statue in pietra, mentre due ali
posteriori racchiudono una piccola corte con giardini pensili.
Nonostante i colpi inferti dalla prima guerra mondiale l’edificio, grazie ad una
sapiente e attenta azione di restauro operata dal principe Manfredo, è tornata
oggi agli antichi fasti e si propone come splendida ambientazione per esclusivi
ricevimenti, riservate riunioni di lavoro o importanti congressi. Lo charme della
storia e delle tradizioni si legano indissolubilmente ad un servizio inappuntabile,
rendendo unico qualsiasi evento.
In the eighteenth century the ambitious Count Odoardo, aiming at the title of
Doge of Venice in competition with the haughty aristocracy of the city, ordered
the construction of a stately palace within the castle as magnificent evidence
of his power. He furnished it with an elegant stairway with banisters decorated
with stone statues, while the two back wings hosted a small courtyard with
terraced gardens.
Despite the damages suffered during WWI, the masterly restoration work
conducted by Prince Manfredo has brought the building back to its ancient
magnificence and it constitutes today a splendid location for exclusive
receptions, private business meetings and important conferences. The charm of
history and tradition combines indissolubly with impeccable service to make any
event unique.
