LearnPad Training
LearnPad trainers came in for a day this week to give the boys and girls further up the school their first taste of the
LearnPads. The level of excitement and enthusiasm during this Year 4 session was amazing.

Mrs Katie Felton
Mrs Felton and her family relocated to Lincolnshire in February
2014. She previously taught at St George’s School, an independent girls’ school in the heart of Edinburgh. AT St George’s she
held the position of Assistant Head of Faculty for Physical Education, Sport and Outdoor Education. Prior to this, Mrs Felton taught
in a large specialist sports college in East Sussex and also a co-ed
comprehensive school in Surrey.
Mrs Felton says she is very fond of the village and she considers
herself very lucky to have found St Hugh’s. Her daughter, Ailsa, is
currently in Reception Oaks Class and her fourteen month old son,
Sebastian, will join the nursery when he turns two. Mrs Felton
says she is most impressed by the caring, family feel to St Hugh’s
and is delighted to be a part of the team.
The Yr 7 boys came up with some questions for Mrs Felton to hep
us get to know her better:
Q: What is your favourite food?
Favourite food...that is a tough question as a I consider myself a bit of a “foodie”! I feel obliged to say haggis but I
think it would have to Thai (the more chillies the better). I also love a good fillet steak (being the daughter of a beef
farmer), but it MUST be cooked to perfection (very rare)!
Q: How long have you been teaching swimming?
I have been fortunate to have taught swimming in all the schools I have worked in, as part of the Physical Education
curriculum. Twelve years in total.
Q: What is your favourite stroke?
Favourite stroke to swim - breaststroke
Favourite stroke to watch - butterfly
Favourite stroke to teach - front crawl
Q: Have you ever coached to Nationals?
I have had the pleasure of working with some outstanding swimmers but I cannot take the credit for their achievements….it is not me that starts each day with a 5am training session! In my previous teaching post, our swimming
team won various regional and national competitions.
PA Autumn Fayre
The Autumn Fayre is set for the 7th November—an ideal
time to kick start your Christmas shopping, socialise with
other parents and enjoy a glass of mulled wine. The PA
are running a chocolate fountain stand and a cake stand,
stocked with donations from parents. If anyone would like
to run their own stand at the event, please contact the PA
directly or come through the School Office.

English
In one of our Scholarship English sessions we were analysing a sonnet personifying ‘sleep’. In addition to the essay
they were writing they were set the independent task of creating their own sonnet to ‘Sleep’.
Tom Clare has written this below; it follows the ABABCC rhyme scheme perfectly.

Come sleep, Sleep, Oh dear Sleep, come and
Sleep, the temporary killer, the reliever of
souls.
put me under your certain land of peace
The waiting place of wit, the balm of woe,
The poor man’s wealth, the prisoner’s release,
The indifferent judge between the highs and lows.
With shield of proof shield me from out the breeze

Year 8 have been
busy revising punctuation and their accuracy when using
speech marks. On
Friday afternoon
they got practical
and became living,
breathing punctuation and sentences!
It was a great way to
revise the topic!

Art Scholar Day
Yr 6, 7 & 8 Art Scholars spent a whole day
at Lincoln Cathedral with their sketch books.
They were lucky with glorious sunshine and
so were able to sketch inside and out.
Festival of Light
Mrs Cook James would like as many children as possible to
bring in a jam jar and tea light after half term. Pupils in Yrs 3
to 8 will be celebrating the Hindu Festival of Light.

Yr 8 Science
Pupils in Year 8 made their own universal indicator by using red cabbage whilst under the
amazing supervision of Harun Tekin who became a science teacher for a lesson. Harun
showed remarkable skill when addressing the
class and all pupils were amazed with the outcome of their experiments! Even if some were
more messy than others Saskia and Thomas
Russell! A huge thank you to Mr and Mrs Tekin
for their red cabbage and lemon contribution.
Yr3 Science
We have been looking at our bodies and this week we focused on exercise and our fitness. We did lots of exercises
and cooled down. We recorded our breaths at different points. We also made 3D collages of people with all the
features of the body. Brenden wanted to make a dog.

Gardening Hobby
Veggie patch kid Ava demonstrates how to make and fix a bee hotel to the fence. The children also got a head start
on the summer fair plant stall by potting up some Lupin seedlings, pre-order yours today!!!
Forest School - Fun in the Woods!
Year 2 had great fun in the woods making damper bread on the fire they had Butter and Jam in it. This linked in with
their Humanities topic on food and farming and making BREAD.
Year 4 had their first supper in the
woods, Sausages and Damper
bread!!
Year 3 enjoyed Eggy bread and tried
using a toasting fork for the “best
toast and jam ever!!”

A Musical Note...
This week saw the first Informal Music Concert of the
term. The children put themselves forward for performing, they practiced hard and played with great enthusiasm. Ruby S from Year 2 gave a great solo on
the violin, the two Year 5 classes performed some
wonderful songs from Mary Poppins and the event was
rounded off with a stunning solo from Harun. Mr
Hardacre gave some not so subtle hints for the audience to learn to sing Go Fly A Kite before the Autumn
Concert.
James Read @ HOYS
James and his pony, Broadgrove Showmen
(known at home as Brian), went to the Horse of
the Year Show at the end of last week. 150,000
children had competed over the last 12 months
to qualify for entry to the various classes at the
show, with only 0.1% making it. James and Brian competed in the Children’s Riding Pony of
the Year class, they were placed 4th out of 25
entrants. Well done James!
Cleaning Up The Adventure Playground
The pirate ship in the adventure playground was getting a bit slippery. Our pupil council representatives led a discussion about how we could solve this problem. Year 1 and Year 2 decided to clean the ship with brushes and soapy
water to see if this would enable us all to play safely. They did a great job. Thank you so much boys and girls.

Girls Hockey v Carswell
U13A Girls Hockey v Carswell Lost 6-0: We had two hockey teams
travel to Farringdon for our annual fixture against St Hugh's. Unfortunately our numbers were affected due to last minute illness but our girls
were delighted to get extra pitch time, with a few girls playing two matches. Three players went on to play a second game in the ‘A’ match. The
team made a good start to the game and put Carswell under pressure in
their defending half. It was clear early on in the game that Carswell had
a couple of key players and the girls worked extremely hard to cope with
this. We went into half time with a scoreless draw but also with some
very tired legs. Carswell stepped up their game in the second half and
put us under even more pressure with several shots on target. Lauren
made some fantastic saves in goal and this resulted in the opposition awarding her and Lily J players of the match!
Carswell went on to win the match 6-0. Overall, a good experience and we look forward to challenging them again
next year.
U13B Girls Hockey v Carswell Lost 4-2: The 'B' team started well and
worked hard to create goal scoring opportunities. Early into the game, St
Hugh's took their chances on the counter-attack with a well worked goal,
scored by Lauren S. Carswell fought back and our team worked incredibly hard in their defending half. Eventually, Carswell managed to capitalise taking it to 1-1. Our second goal was a cracking one, from Saskia H.
This gave the team a real lift and it was end to end from that point on.
U11/U10 Girls Hockey v Glebe House
U11/U10 Girls Hockey v Glebe House, Won 5-3: An exciting Under11 home match unfolded on Wednesday afternoon against Glebe. The St Hugh's squad were again eager to do as well as they could. Aims for the match were
to try to work hard on keeping our shape on the pitch, and to keep possession of the ball as much as possible.
Throughout the match the whole squad worked tirelessly again, showing great strength and determination. The
opening goal of the game came from Emily R who executed a powerful shot on target. The second and third goals
soon followed from Daisy and Mollie. The girls were unlucky to concede one goal before half time, with Pippa having dominated the defensive role - with numerous strong clearances. The second half continued well, with the girls
showing great communication and team work. 2 further goals were added to the tally from Grace, and a couple of
goals were conceded as Glebe fought valiantly until the final whistle. Overall, a very positive match where great
team spirit and encouragement was offered/shown. Well done to Isabelle for her first competitive match in goal. Excellent performances from Emily R and Pippa - well done girls!

U13 Girls Hockey Tournament @ Oakham
U13 Girls Hockey Tournament @ Oakham: The U13
team faced tough competition on Saturday with three initial games against Witham Hall, South Lees and Denstone. Our opening game was against the eventual tournament winners, Witham Hall. Witham put us under a
great deal of pressure in our defending half and we struggled to maintain possession. Very early on in the game
they took an early lead with a soft goal but it was clear
that St Hugh's had a fight on their hands. Lauren was certainly warmed up by the end of our first match, putting in
some impressive saves. Witham went on to win the game
4-0. Our other two group games were against South Lee
and Denstone. St Hugh's showed great determination in
both matches and worked tirelessly to gain possession and create attacking opportunities. Unfortunately we did not
capitalise and lost both games 2-0. Finishing fourth in our group, we went on to play two more games in the plate
competition. Our first match was against a strong Spratton Hall side but our girls started the game with renewed confidence and conviction. We denied them space and worked hard to regain possession. St Hugh's began to tire and as
a result struggled to keep up with the pace of the game, leaving players open in our defending circle. Spratton Hall
took advantage of this and went on to win the game 2-0. Our final game against the hosts was the most competitive
and St Hugh's really stepped up their game. Oakham had a battle on their hands and it was end to end. A great ball
in to the 'D' by Frankie R resulted in St Hugh's going one nil up, with Esmee T scoring the first goal of the match.
Again, Lauren S made some crucial saves in goal, but the determined Oakham side came back fighting and scored
taking it to 1-1. St Hugh's kept their heads up and it wasn't until the last 20 seconds of the game that Oakham took
the lead. A very unlucky 2-1 loss. Well done to all players and many thanks to our team of supportive parents!
U13 X Rugby v St George’s Academy
U13 X v St George’s Won 52-31: We were a little unsure
what to expect off St George’s but it was clear to see that
they were all big! We started a little slowly and conceded
the first try. The game then went end to end and at half
time the score was 26 all. St Hugh’s then upped the pace
of the game and moved the ball away from the rucks very
quickly. We managed to score a further 26 points in the
second half whilst St George’s only scored 5. Not bad
against a school that has 140 boys in Year 8 alone. It has
been a super first half of the season so far and we look
forward to Wellow on Wednesday.

U13 VIII Rugby v Glebe House
U13A v Glebe House Lost 24-42: This was exciting match with both teams using the whole of the pitch to exploit
the space. The St Hugh’s boys missed a few tackles in the first half and the score at half time was 28-19. We started
off the second half very brightly and managed to score the first try. The game then went end to end and with a few
minutes remaining the score was very tight. Unfortunately for St Hugh’s Glebe managed to score twice in the last 4
minutes. A good effort made by all of the boys but we need to improve our one on one tackling.
U9 Rugby v Glebe House & Downham Prep
Triangular tournament vs Downham (L 6-2) & Glebe (L 5-4): We took a mixed team of Under 9 and Under 8 players to a tag rugby mini-tournament at Glebe on Wednesday. Against a strong and organised Downham team we
found it hard to break through their lines but the team kept plugging away and Joseph Sh. managed to weave his way
through with great fleetness of foot, before going off feeling unwell. George P added to the scoreline late on with another well taken try in the corner. However, they proved to be tricky opponents and managed to score six times.
Against Glebe the players began to link a lot better and several good passing moves were put together. In a tight
game George P scored 3 tries and Joseph Sh. broke through for another. Some notable performances, which provided great support for the try scorers, by Eddie E, Morgan D, Jamie S and Toby A helped the team to a creditable display against the hosts. I would also like to thank the parents for their great support in the cold and swirling winds of
Norfolk.
U10 Rugby v Glebe House

Witham Hall X Country
A total of 23 pupils from Years 3 to 6 took part in the annual Witham Hall cross country races, with 60 runners in
each race and 10 schools competing. All 23 pupils tried their hearts out and produced some fantastic results. The
highlight was Esme M winning the Under 9 girls race, a terrific achievement. Our Under 11 boys were 3rd their team
competition again a marvellous result. Isabelle C had a great 10 th place also in the U9 girls race. This was a marvellous afternoon of running with all the runners performing brilliantly over a very testing course. Thank you and well
done. The parents and staff (Miss Kirk & Mr Goodhand) were magnificent, their help, encouragement and support

Brooke Priory X Country
A total of 43 pupils from Years 2 to 6 took part in the annual Brooke Priory cross country races. All 43 pupils tried
their hearts out and produced some fantastic results. The
highlight was Esme M coming 2nd in the Under 9 girls
race a terrific achievement. Our Under 9 girls came 2nd in
their team competition again a marvellous achievement
with excellent top 10 finishes by Isabelle C 4th, Nathan H
5th, Harry M 6th , Bridie M 7th , Harriette P 10th & Charlie H
10th.We had two runners in the Under 7 fun run who both
finished the course and ran magnificently – Beth C &
Cole V , well done. This was a marvellous afternoon of
running showing St Hugh’s at its best, with so many pupils wanting to run and putting in so much effort in testing
conditions. Thank you and well done. Last but not least
the parents, thank you for giving up your Saturday afternoon and supporting the pupils you were magnificent and
it does make a real difference.

This week we are still recovering from the chocolate feast that was Caitlin’s birthday
last week; the Friday night crew were royally spoilt with HUGE cupcakes from the
Deli and they loved singing Caitlin repeated rounds of Happy Birthday as the candles didn’t seem to want to go out. As the evenings draw in and the weather becomes more wintry the children are really appreciating having so many wonderful
facilities on hand, from indoor cricket to
dodge ball tournaments and explosive
science, the bad weather never stops
us! The winners of the cupcake icing
competition were: Holly R, Libby D and
Hattie P. Who knows…maybe we are
nurturing the Bake Off stars of the future? We welcomed Mrs Malvern in to
the boarding house on Monday and I
know she had a fantastic time with the
girlies doing their hair and having a
good gossip during ‘makeover mayhem’! The boarding crew is strong and
growing, not only do they have a wonderful time, learn valuable life skills but they
are also well-prepared for senior school. An ex- parent of full boarders recently commented just how well prepared her children were: ‘The children thrived in the
school’s warm, caring environment and continued to thrive at their senior school’.
