The La Honda Voice February 2013 The Face of Local Music - Kevin Kelsey Michael Anthony Harshfield – 1951-2012 by craig eddy Kevin Kelsey at the 2012 La Honda Fair Kevin Kelsey, currently of the Kings Mountain area, didn't find his way to our coastal mountain area here because of the music, but it was a pleasant surprise for him to move here and find so much art and music. He grew up as a child of the Peninsula. Kevin later sold his business, got a divorce, and moved up to Kings Mountain. He took piano lessons for three years before getting his first electric bass at thirteen. First song? Smoke on the Water. (continued on page 2) Michael Anthony Harshfield, 61, died Dec 24, 2012 surrounded by family at St. Rita's Hospital in Lima Ohio. Since the last edition of the La Honda Voice, we have experienced a lot of rain followed by a long cold spell. This photo taken by Christian Johnson shows flooding on Pescadero Road taken near the end of 2012 Our dear friend, Squeak, has moved on down the race track of life. His passing leaves all of us who knew him with heavy hearts. He will be missed dearly. Squeak's passion was Nascar and… (continued on page 2) The following was provided by Michael Harshfield’s daughter, Terri Owens: “He was born Feb 22, 1951 to the late Lawrence & Rosemond Dean Harshfield. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Anthony Harshfield II. Survivors include his daughter Terri (Todd) Owen of California; grandchildren Michael & Marcella, at home, and Nicole (Dwayne Robertson) Owen of Australia; Brothers Lawrence, Don (Judy), Dick (Melinda), George, Tom (Barb), Jim (Dee), and Pat (Georgiana) Harshfield; and sisters Connie (Jerry) Abbott, Libby Smith, and Vicky(Bill) Arnold; former wives Judy Woodruff and Joanne Good; special friends Cheryl Durbin Lasure & Gavin and Sandy Caple Beaches. 1 Michael Anthony Harshfield (continued from page 1) …all things cars. He spent much of his life working on and restoring old cars. His painting work can still be seen around town on some of the locals’ vehicles. Squeak was also involved with the local music scene. You could find him behind the mixing board at the La Honda Country Fair, the Pescadero Art Fair, helping out the Mark Reid Band or one of the many other local talents. The Face of Local Music - Kevin Kelsey (continued from page 1) (Probably more musicians started with that song than any other.) He was into The Who, Styx, The Fix, The Cars and the Grateful Dead. During high school Kevin was mostly involved in jazz vocal ensembles. He did some playing in church also. Kevin was in a band or two during school but never really knew that many other players. He met current band mate Dave Barrow (see lahonda.com) through mutual Dead Head friends. Their first band together, The Baked Clams, was pretty bad but, "we were plenty loud." Eventually Kevin, with friends Dave Barrow and Dan Newitt, formed current band Pathetic Honey. PH has been playing the area for several years now and is getting quite a following. Kevin loves playing Applejack's and says Pathetic Honey and AJ's are a perfect match. They just finished up the End of the World party at AJ's and people are still talking about it. I give them the credit for the incredible survival rate at the end of the world. Kevin gives his friend Dan Newitt much credit for pushing him musically and helping him grow. Kevin started going to the Strawberry Music Festival and got hooked on the acoustic jamming scene, which got him to take up acoustic upright bass. Pathetic Honey is doing the finishing touches on their first recording project and both Dan and Kevin, along with local favorite Stacey Erdman, are just starting to record as new local band Cryin' Shame. You can catch both bands at the local venues as well as shows around the Bay Area. Look for Pathetics CD release sometime during the spring. One thing for sure is if Kevin is on stage he will have a smile on his face and most likely be barefooted. You could not ask for a better friend. Squeak liked a good yarn, and could be counted on to keep you entertained on the front porch of Apple Jack's (think free dentures at the morgue), or many other such crazy, fun, stories. He loved to travel and was a great companion on road trips. These are just a few things we will miss about Squeak. I am happy to say that Rusty dog will have him back in his life. They were good buddies! We will forever miss Squeak.... A "Celebration of Life" will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Cafe Cuesta from 11am 1pm. This will be a potluck. A Memorial page has been set up in Squeaks honor at: https://www.facebook.com/MichaelSqueakHarsh fieldMemorialPage. Please, take a moment to post stories, photos, and/or link videos, or just say "So long!". But a special, free, tax preparation service offered by Puente helps the medicine go down – and even leave a pleasant aftertaste. Puente’s program, now in its 5th year, helps low-income South Coast residents prepare hassle-free tax returns through Earn It! Keep It! Save It!, a regional program sponsored by United Way. The service is offered free of charge. [I called Puente and they said the annual income limit for this free service is $50,000 - editor] The best part: participants walk in the door convinced they’ll have to part with a large chunk of their income. Many of them are delighted to discover that they qualify for substantial tax refunds, says Rita Mancera, Program Director for Puente. Last year Puente helped 59 participants file their taxes, resulting in refunds totaling $73,608. For a large family getting by on a farmworker’s salary, that’s very encouraging news…Puente is one of the only tax preparers on the Peninsula that offers this service, according to Mancera. “For the purposes of tax time, everyone is considered a resident,” she says. Artist Joyce Converse "...That lush native greenery that thrives on [La Honda resident Joyce] Converse’s property also captivates her oil paintings in Penelope’s Den gallery at the crossing of highways 35 and 84 southeast of La Honda...She has shown her art in Carmel, on the East Coast, in private California homes, and through the Coastside Land Trust gallery. She teaches landscape painting to adults on her property, where she reveals to students “how to see, how to simplify what you’re looking at” and how to show it in terms of composition and color, which she calls the “frosting on the cake.” Her love of the land fuels her art. The more she knows the land and the more she looks at it, she said, “the more able I am to express the essence of what I see.” She focuses on “finding the quality of the thing I’m looking at and making it visible. I feel like I’ve brought life into two dimensions, and it’s a celebration of that life.” She calls painting almost a meditation process, more about the process itself than the final product. Similarly, that ties in with how music colors her work as she listens to Bach or contemporary composers and paints to what she hears. “You get your ego out of the way,” she said about how she lets music influence what she paints. “It takes you deeper.” “I am lucky enough to live where I paint and paint where I live, for the most part, so for me it’s a lot about falling in love with something that I see every day and know very well,” she wrote in an artist’s statement..." Now Puente needs YOUR help. Puente needs a few volunteers to prepare taxes for your South Coast neighbors. The job entails 3 hours of work per week during tax time, and a 15-hour self-guided training to get qualified. To volunteer, please contact Abby Mohaupt no later than January 11 at [email protected] or 650.879.1691. 3 We are all so proud of our cousin Milton and his wife Marie! Milton Cavalli Turns 100! by Kathy (Zanone) Wolf I'm Mary Kathleen Zanone Wolf and my first cousin is Milton Cavalli. My father Armond and Milton's mom May were brother and sister. My Aunt May had Milton when she was young and my Dad had me and my younger brother, Steve, when he was older. Milton just turned 100 years old on January 22, and his wife Marie will be 99 years old in May. They will also be celebrating their 75th wedding anniversary in July. In August of 2012, we celebrated Milton turning 99 1/2 years old at Cafe Cuesta in La Honda. At his birthday celebration, he shared some of his stories growing up here in La Honda. He drove his first car at age 9 with his uncle. He said he had many chores - like bringing in the firewood and then making the fire. Another chore was to go to the basement and siphon the wine out of the barrel into a pitcher for the family dinner. His parents owned the Cavalli Inn in La Honda for many years. La Honda Historical Society in 2012 by Kathy Wolf 2012 was a great year for the La Honda Historical Society. We had interesting meetings discussing outlaws, genealogy, local murders, a 100th birthday, hunting, local gas stations and vehicles. The February speaker was our own Bob Dougherty, who spoke about the Younger Brothers - what were truths or lies. There were lots of good guys gone bad and bad guys who stayed bad, but all was good with Bob presenting their history. In March, Kevin Miles came with a load of history of growing up here in La Honda; he had a menu from the Old Mill and the price of an Abalone dinner then was $2.50. He was one of the summer families who moved here fulltime. In April, Bob Dougherty again spoke - this time about the stories and photos which ended up on the cutting room floor while writing the Images of America book on La Honda. The next Month, Cath Madden Trindle came to La Honda from the San Mateo County Genealogical Society, and she had a wealth of information on how to look up relatives (dead and alive), arrest records, adoptions, court records and other interesting facts, like who owed what to who. In June, George Bordi gave us the history of the Alpine Area, including the Well Murder that took place up at Log Cabin. In August, we celebrated Milton Cavalli's 99 1/2 Birthday at a party where he shared stories of growing up in La Honda with his parents at the Cavalli Store. Milton with his 10th Birthday Cake Milton's driver license would have expired when he turned 100, so he went down to the DMV and took the written test - passing it with a score of 100%. But he realized that he had left his teeth at home, so a neighbor brought them down so he could have his DMV picture taken with them! His next renewal will be when he is 105 years old. Milton and Marie have one daughter, Kris, who lives in Mountain View and two grandchildren, Shaleece and Brent. Shaleece is a film director, and one of her films is called “Old People Driving,” with Milton and his Model T. The film was selected as the best Documentary short film at the Phoenix Film Festival. Milton's daughter had a birthday party for him on Sunday, January 20th, at the Elks Lodge in San Mateo. There were over 200 people present, including family and friends from United Airlines, his old car club, and other friends he has made over the years. Milton has 6 first cousins still alive - Emil Zanoni, Lillian Zanoni Milani, Mary Jane Zanoni Olivarez, Kathy Zanone and Steve Zanone Speaker Dan Caughey at the LHHS Milton remembers when they physically moved the family house across La Honda Creek , driving a car at age 9 and getting his driving license at age 14, which was good for life (and which he still has). In September, Sheri JansenOlliges discussed her book about the Middleton Track, called From Timber Barons to Tree Huggers. In November, the Historical Society presented Rita Veit Brown who was born and raised in La Honda. (continued on pg. 5) 4 La Honda Historical Society in 2012 (continued from page 4) Her father, Ralph, owned the gas station down by La Honda Village. Rita had a wealth of stories about the simpler times here, including the story of a woman named Tootsie, who lived in La Honda with her friend, and took care of his children. She dressed in very short skirts and was big chested. However, one day Tootsie was arrested and it was discovered that "she" was a "he"... and that was big news for the little town of La Honda back in those days. The Historical Society started out this year with Dan Caughey, who spoke of his time in both La Honda and San Gregorio. Dan said that Pomponio Beach used to be called Caughey Beach since the Caughey ranch in San Gregorio extended out to the beach until the State claimed it after World War 2. Dan had a donkey he rode in his corral as a kid, but when he was old enough and his parents felt he would be safe, he got a horse and rode it all over La Honda carrying a little bow and arrow. A neighbor would see little Danny riding his horse, and the neighbor would hide behind a tree and make Indian sounds, which the young Danny Caughey really believed were out there. One day on a ride over to Cuesta to visit his friend, a Coggin, he noticed the young girls at the pool. The girls also noticed him on his horse, and one of them is now his wife, Belinda. Danny also recounted a lot of deer hunting stories and how things have changed here in La Honda. Stork Sightings!!! Zara Madison Tepedelenlioglu 12-26-12 8lbs and 5 oz Younger sister of Ziya! In addition to old-growth redwoods, the property includes areas of Santa Cruz cypress and Anderson’s Manzanita...The properties contain habitat for the endangered marbled murrelet sea bird, which nests only in tall coastal trees with snags and broad, high branches such as redwoods. Hot La Honda Sandwich The recipe below is from an old La Honda community cookbook. It features a sandwich submitted by Milton Cavalli’s father, Frank. I think the cookbook was from the 1960s. (Thanks Karen Delee) Driscoll Orchards, in La Honda Immediately off Highway 84 sits Driscoll Orchards, a 318-acre property POST purchased on December 14 for $7.25 million from the Driscoll family...The property includes a small apple orchard, cattle grazing and the Driscoll Ranch event center. The landscape contains a mix of low-lying oak forest, sloping grassland, coastal scrub, and a small but spectacular redwood grove. A portion of San Gregorio Creek with populations of rainbow trout and Coho salmon also runs through the property... POST Acquires Nearly 1,000 Acres in Santa Cruz Mountains (excerpt from http://www.openspacetrust.org/ news/pressreleases13-0117.html) "Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) kicked off the new year by announcing the purchase of three key properties within the Santa Cruz Mountains through its Heart of the Redwoods Campaign. Two properties are in La Honda, and one is near Pescadero. Together they total 991 acres and are the latest result of POST’s longstanding commitment to preserving open lands in and around Silicon Valley, including threatened redwood forests, wildlife habitat and watershed land within the Santa Cruz Mountains. Heart of the Redwoods Protection POST acquired these three properties through its ongoing Heart of the Redwoods Campaign. Launched at the end of 2011, the five-year effort is raising funds to protect 20,000 acres of the last remaining redwood forests in the Santa Cruz Mountains. To date, POST has saved 9,700 acres of local redwoods lands, including these latest acquisitions, through the campaign. “These three properties are critical additions to POST’s Heart of the Redwoods Campaign,” said POST President Walter T. Moore. “Development and subdivision pose a serious threat not only to the health and longevity of our coastal redwood forests, but to our entire region’s ecosystem. If we can connect isolated islands of protected open space into a resilient network of open lands, we will be able to secure and create a vibrant ecosystem for Silicon Valley.”… Alpine Ranch, in La Honda ...353-acre Alpine Ranch in La Honda features forested hillsides including abundant redwoods. Bordered by Pescadero Creek and Sam McDonald county parks, the property contains more than a mile of tributaries to Pescadero Creek and a small pond. POST purchased the land on December 19 for $5 million. The property includes habitat for several threatened and endangered species, including steelhead trout, California red-legged frog, San Francisco garter snake and San Mateo woolly sunflower... 6 their website that they need, they will also accept any type of electronics for recycling, at no cost. They will securely erase your hard drive and provide a receipt for tax purposes. They also need digital cameras, memory cards, USB flash drives, and laser printers. In addition to the items listed on San Mateo County's RecycleWorks has a wealth of information about many different kinds of recycling resources. Check out their website at www.RecycleWorks.org or call (888) 442-2666. 7 volunteers dug a channel through a sandbar that forms every year at Pescadero State Beach on the southern San Mateo County coast, trapping water in the lagoon to the east. The trough improved water quality in the marsh, officials said, preventing the "fish kills" of the federal threatened species that for nearly 20 years have occurred when winter storms arrive. The purpose of digging the channel this fall was to alleviate the buildup of oxygen-depleted water and hydrogen sulfide that in recent years has surged throughout the lagoon when the rainy season comes and the heavy flow of water cuts through the sandbar... Coastal Commission Sinks San Gregorio Subdivision (excerpt from http://www.hmbreview.com/news/coastalcommission-sinks-south-coastsubdivision/article_b45e9416-4d61-11e2-ae7d001a4bcf887a.html by Mark Noack) Location of proposed sub-division "The California Coastal Commission...shot down plans to subdivide and build homes around the San Gregorio General Store, with some commissioners questioning how San Mateo County officials had signed off on the project. The Coastal Commission unanimously sided with appellants against the San Gregorio project, finding it was in “direct conflict” with the county’s local coastal plan....The project proposed by San Gregorio General Store owners George and Mary Cattermole would divide the 12-acre property around the shop into four parcels and build two homes and a four-car garage on one of the lots. The couple has owned the property since 1978, and they had been planning to build the new homes for about a decade, Mary Cattermole explained to the commission...the subdivision proposal drove a wedge in the small community of San Gregorio, and many of the Cattermoles’ next-door neighbors became the project’s fiercest opponents. Living right next to the general store, Shauna McKenna complained that she was continuously dealing with traffic and noise from the popular tourist spot..." …Last year, observers counted 235 dead steelhead after the sandbar breached; Simms said the actual number of fish that died was much higher. So far this year, no fish deaths have been reported following the breach Nov. 30..." Jerry Hill on Friday will introduce legislation to reform how the California Department of Fish and Wildlife handles encounters between humans and mountain lions. The bill would require the agency to use nonlethal methods when dealing with cougars unless there is a dire public safety threat. It would also authorize the department to work with wildlife groups and other organizations in capturing the animals. Critics say the agency has tied its own hands with guidelines that allow practically any wayward lion to be dispatched...The Department of Fish and Wildlife created a public uproar Dec. 1 when game wardens shot and killed two cubs, believed to be orphaned siblings, under the porch of a home in Half Moon Bay. Plan to Save Pescadero Steelhead Succeeds (excerpt from http://www.mercurynews.com/sanmateo-county-times/ci_22285078/plan-savepescadero-steelhead-succeeds by Aaron Kinney) "An experimental project to prevent steelhead trout from dying by the hundreds in Pescadero Marsh was so successful it will likely be tried again next year, federal officials said.
