Quarter 1 - Cleveland Animal Protective League
A nonprofit Humane Society serving Greater Cleveland and Cuyahoga County since 1913. Patter March 2012 Letter from the CEO pg. 2 Help Homeless Animals pg. 4 Fur-Get-Me-Not Telethon pg. 6 Max wanted his freedom, but not in the way he got it. The young Spaniel mix was abandoned on an East Side street over the Independence Day weekend last year and left to fend for himself. Fortunately, a woman who witnessed the incident brought Max to the Cleveland APL. Max was the size of an adult dog, but at less than a year old, he had the energy–and some of the bad habits–of a puppy. Our staff and volunteers walked and played with him every day, and he thrived on the attention, but he was stressed in his kennel. Obviously, his abandonment had created some anxiety issues. Kristin Gall, one of our Dog Enrichment volunteers, had gotten to know Max through her work here and thought that with some time and training he would become a great pet. Kristin decided to foster Max in her home, where she, her husband, Matt, and their 3-year-old dog, Ella, could show him the ropes. “Max was a handful at first,” Kristin recalled, “especially when we’d leave or try to put him to bed, as he had a terrible case of separation anxiety that meant lots of whining and barking. We seriously wondered if we’d be able to keep fostering him.” Pet Patter 12pgs Q12012_NCL.indd 1 But they didn’t give up. Their patience and consistency paid off as Max learned to think of his crate as a good place and also learned some manners and basic commands. After a month, Kristin brought him back to the Cleveland APL, hoping that he would find a permanent home during our Super Adoptathon. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen and Max reverted to bad habits in the shelter. So Kristin took Max back for more fostering. Or so she thought. “It became clear Max knew he had already found his home,” she said. “We finally decided Max was right and there was no way we could let him go.” Since becoming a permanent member of the family, Max has completed a training course and has discovered the joys of toys, treats, getting brushed and wearing himself out playing with Ella and other dogs at the dog park. After doing that, he loves cuddling with his loving mom and dad. 2/2/12 10:43 AM Roo’s News Sharon Harvey and Roo Letter from the CEO In the space I have here, it will be hard to capture everything we accomplished in 2011 for our animals; so instead, I’m going to tell you about a couple of things we were especially excited about and that illustrate our commitment to constantly improving the quality of care for our animals while they’re with us. Thanks to a grant from the ASPCA , we now get to watch our dogs romping and frolicking in beautiful new play areas. Up until now, their exercise routine had consisted solely of going on leashed walks with our wonderful volunteers. While this activity has many benefits, and will continue so we can provide additional socialization and a little leash training, it wasn’t meeting the needs of dogs who REALLY, REALLY needed to burn off some energy. I wish you could see their joyful expressions when they get out to the area and realize they can RUN AND PLAY with reckless abandon! ® Of course, we couldn’t leave our feline friends out, so for them, thanks to a generous bequest from an anonymous supporter who wanted to make a difference for cats, we purchased fabulous enrichment towers for our cat playrooms that are made especially for shelters. The towers come complete with perches, beds, ramps, hiding places, scratching posts and all kinds of places for our cats to explore or snooze. We also added colorful bins to every cat cage so they have a little bedroom away from their litter boxes, and either a perch or a hiding place depending on the needs of each cat. These improvements are wonderful examples of our commitment to providing critical enrichment and the best care possible to our animals while they’re with us. Without the generosity of the ASPCA® and our anonymous cat lover, these projects wouldn’t have been possible. Without every other donation that we receive throughout the year from each and every one of you, absolutely none of what we do would be possible. On their behalf, I thank you. An APL dog enjoying the play area The Cleveland APL’s animals are fed Hill’s® Science Diet® pet food. We got a dog!” That’s the message my husband got in August when he called home and our 5-year-old daughter, Parker, answered the phone. Darren was a bit surprised because we hadn’t talked about getting a dog. But like every good adoption, there’s an even better story. Our family is a big fan of the Cleveland APL. Over the years we have adopted several pets from the APL, including our cat, Georgie, and guinea pig, Mortie. (We also have a cat, Oscar, from the Lakewood Animal Shelter). This past summer, a job change allowed me to stay home with our three children, Max, Gabby, and Parker. One of their favorite activities was visiting the animals at the APL, especially the dog room where Gabby and I volunteered this summer. Due to our frequent weekend travel, we did not have a dog and had no intention of adopting one (thus my husband’s confusion). One August afternoon, the kids and I visited the kennels to play with the dogs. Every dog who greeted us at the cage door enjoyed play time with a the kids in the visiting room. Toward the end of the visit, I noticed a scared little brindle Boxer mix named Pryness. Pryness was smashed up against the door and eyed me with pitiful, sad eyes. I bent down and offered her my hand to sniff, which she then licked. I decided that a visit with Pryness, a shelter resident for two months, was in order. When she came into the visiting room, she was terrified of me. But as soon as we let her off the leash, Pryness came alive, prancing, playing fetch, and giving the kids lots of puppy love. I decided then and there we had to take Pryness home with the intention of fostering her. Well, we are officially a “foster failure” family. That shy dog, renamed Penny, changed our lives from day one. We never imagined we could love an animal so much. Penny’s biggest joys are playing chase with her black Lab pal across the street, taking daily runs in the Metroparks, eating snow, hanging out with the kids, and cuddling up to us at night. People stop us on the street to tell us how pretty she is. It’s hard to imagine a dog smiling, but Penny does every day. And so do we! Yes, we got an “F” as a foster family. But never has doing extra credit been more fun! March 2012 Pet Patter 12pgs Q12012_NCL.indd 3 2/2/12 10:43 AM Community News Help Homeless Animals! Become a Q Cash Captain, Kid, or School The 7th Annual Q104 Pledge for Pets Radiothon fundraiser will be held on Friday, May 11, and Saturday, May 12. Q104’s morning show team will share heartwarming stories about animals who have been helped by the Cleveland APL—and of the very special people who rescue, rehabilitate, and adopt them. You can be a part of making a big difference in the lives of so many animals who need our help. Leading up to the Radiothon, you can sign up to be a “Q Cash Captain.” Q Cash Captains collect Doggy Dollars and Kitty Kash from their families, friends and co-workers, helping the animals at the APL in the process! Children under the age of 18 can sign up to be “Q Cash Kids.” Travis Hafner of the Cleveland Indians and his wife, Amy, are sponsoring this program again this year. And, back again for a third year is “Q Cash Schools,” which involves classes, grades, and entire schools. Very cool prizes will be given to the top Q Cash Captain and Q Cash Kid. The winning Q Cash School will get an assembly complete with a visit by Q104’s morning show team and Joe Thomas of the Cleveland Browns and his wife, Annie. A kick-off party for the Radiothon will be held for all Q Cash Captains and a guest at the Primate, Cat and Aquatics Building at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on Wednesday, May 9, at 6 p.m. It is easy to get involved! Sign up NOW at www.ClevelandAPL.org or call 216-377-1628 and be a part of creating happy endings for our furry friends! Is Your Furry Friend Star Material? Don’t miss the chance for your four-legged friend to be featured in the 2013 Cleveland APL pet calendar honoring our area’s much-beloved pets. To enter the contest and for all instructions, visit our website at www.ClevelandAPL.org or call 216-377-1628 for more information. Di 4 Pet Patter 12pgs Q12012_NCL.indd 4 2/2/12 10:43 AM Love Match at Work The Cleveland APL is fortunate to have the support of several local media outlets that help us put our adoptable animals in the spotlight, one being TV station WEWS Newschannel 5, which features one of our available animals every Tuesday in a live segment during its noon newscast. Producer Meredith Kieger had seen many of our adoptable animals over the years during the segment. But she never was moved to adopt one herself until last December, when a cute orange male tabby named Montezuma was the Pet of the Week. “Montezuma called to me through the camera as he purred softly and cuddled in (Cleveland APL staff member Judy Hunter’s) lap for the entire segment,” Meredith recalled. “When I discovered that he only had three legs, that sealed the deal. I was going to make sure that this beautiful cat, who obviously had been through something traumatic, was going to get a ton of love the rest of his life.” Four-year-old Montezuma had been living as a stray for about a year when he was brought to the shelter by a Good Samaritan who found him injured on her front porch last October. An exam by our veterinary staff revealed a broken right front leg and several bite wounds. Because of the severity of the injury, Montezuma’s leg was amputated. He recovered in a foster care volunteer’s home for a few weeks then returned to the shelter to go up for adoption. after the broadcast, Montezuma had a new home, a new family and a new name: Grady. These days, Grady shares his home with Meredith’s husband and children and two other cats, one of whom, Sophie, also was adopted from the Cleveland APL. The whole family was quickly impressed with three-legged Grady’s mobility. “Besides the fact that he makes a lot of noise going up and down our wooden staircase, he gets around like a champ,” Meredith said. “Every time I see Grady I feel so happy that we gave him a warm, loving home, and he fits in just great with the chaos that is life at my house. It’s amazing how rewarding it can be to give a sweet, loving animal a home. I’d like to thank the APL for making it a quick and painless process.” A few weeks on the adoption floor led to his TV appearance and fateful meeting with Meredith. Just hours Did You Know? Other Ways to Give Many generous individuals choose to donate to the Cleveland APL in lieu of giving gifts for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, Bat Mitzvahs, Bar Mitzvahs, etc. Their thoughtfulness is a wonderful tribute to their love for animals. Call 216-344-1353 if you would like to learn more about how your celebration can help the APL’s homeless animals. In addition, many individuals choose to give through a workplace giving program. The Cleveland Animal Protective League is a member of Greater Cleveland Community Shares. Community Shares supports local nonprofit organizations working for long-term, sustainable solutions to build a stronger Cleveland. Learn more about Community Shares at www.communityshares.org and please consider supporting the APL through workplace giving. Federal employees also have the opportunity to give to the APL through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). The mission of the CFC is to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient, and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all. The Cleveland APL Combined Federal Campaign Number is 29857. 8 Pet Patter 12pgs Q12012_NCL.indd 8 2/2/12 10:43 AM Tributes A gift of $50 or more is recognized in Pet Patter. Until They Find Their New Home and Family... The Cleveland Animal Protective League lovingly cares for thousands of homeless, injured and abused animals each year. For some, their cage at the APL, complete with a warm bed, toys, plenty of food and water, and lots of TLC, is the only “home” they have ever known. For others, it’s a temporary home until Maxwell was with us 4 months and 11 days. Adopted! they find the love of another family. For all of them, it’s the reason they’re getting a second chance. Our annual cage sponsors bring hope and comfort to our animals while they Frankie was with us 1 month. Adopted! wait for their future mom or dad to adopt them and take them home— permanently. We ask that you help us to provide all of the care and love Jelly was with us 5 months and 15 days. Adopted! they need while they are with us by becoming a cage sponsor. Your cage sponsorship will be recognized with a plaque on a cage in our cat, dog or small mammal adoption center areas. You may choose to make your cage sponsorship in honor or in memory of a special pet or person or you may choose to advertise your business. Cage sponsorships are renewable every year. At the Cleveland Animal Protective League, healthy, friendly animals stay with us until they are adopted. We all know a cage in a shelter is not a permanent home, but with your cage sponsorship, we can make it a temporary home away from home until they have one of their own by providing all the care that is needed—and that they so rightfully deserve. For cage sponsorship opportunities please see below. 2012 CLEVELAND ANIMAL PROTECTIVE LEAGUE ANNUAL CAGE SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM Yes, I would like to sponsor a cage at the Cleveland Animal Protective League.
