A nonprofit Humane Society serving Greater Cleveland and Cuyahoga County since 1913. Patter August 2011 Executive Director Letter pg. 2 Q104 Radiothon Success pg. 4 Fur Ball 2011 pg. 8 Ace’s story had a heartbreaking beginning. But he found a happy ending – and just in time for Valentine’s Day. “We fell in love with this handsome boy when we saw his picture on the APL website,” Teri Eisenhardt recalled. “We wanted an orange cat, and Ace seemed to have just the look we were after.” “When I heard his story — that he was dumped in a crate behind an apartment building along with another cat, it ripped my heart out. The other cat, Abel, got adopted so Ace was put in the playroom with other cats to keep him company. I needed a cat that would get along with our cat, so I was confident Ace would be a good match for us.” And she was right. Ace made himself at home almost immediately and quickly befriended resident feline Hobo. Even from indoors, Ace takes in the sights, sounds and smells of his new yard, where ducks, geese and birds are frequent visitors. He also has earned the nickname Mr. Nosey because he likes to watch the neighbors’ activities through the window. It’s OK, though, because they like watching him too! Ace lives life to the fullest. He’s about 2 years old and his energy level reflects Pet Patter 8pgs Q32011v1.indd 1 Top: Ace enjoying a snooze at home Bottom: Ace’s photo taken at the APL by Volunteer Photographer Dan Sandy his youth. He stays active until he exhausts himself then he sleeps soundly for hours. “No catnapping for him,” Teri said. He also has quite the appetite and weighs a healthy 11.6 pounds. “No one may ever know for sure everything that Ace went through before he arrived at the shelter, but that’s all behind him now,” Teri said. “I hope he feels like he made the right choice when he picked his new family.” 7/27/11 1:54 PM Roo’s News Sharon Harvey and Roo No matter how we spend our days or what kind of work we do, we often find ourselves overwhelmed by those things we can’t control. And, when it’s this time of year, you work in animal welfare, and the animals that need help are coming in so fast you can’t think anymore – well, it’s pretty easy to feel overwhelmed. It seems that’s exactly how I was feeling when I opened an e-mail from one of our phenomenally committed volunteers asking for an opinion about a somewhat controversial adoption promotion being run by another humane society. During our excellent e-dialogue, I shared some of the struggles we all face that lead us to try novel and sometimes controversial strategies to save more lives – and as it seems I used the word “struggle” a few times, she sensed that I was feeling overwhelmed! Not only did she reply with one of the most meaningful e-mails I’ve ever received, in which she shared a sense of pride in being involved with an organization that is always looking for ways to do more and be better, but she reminded me that no matter how overwhelmed I might feel at any given time, there is much to celebrate. The list of new life-saving or life-improving initiatives we’ve implemented or are exploring is truly impressive. From adding programs and services that will help owners keep their pets during times of To Make a Donation to the APL: Visit our website at www.ClevelandAPL.org or mail your check to the Cleveland Animal Protective League, Attention Development Office, 1729 Willey Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44113. temporary hardship to implementing processes that will allow us to better monitor and optimize shelter animal wellness and enrichment, from supporting the massive growth of our spay/neuter program for feral and stray cats to earning national recognition for our innovative cat adoption promotions, from supporting and applauding the City of Cleveland during its quest to eliminate all “pit bulls” from its vicious-dog ordinance to putting our own ambassador “bully breed” adoption program in place at the APL, from the incredible impact that our Second Chance Program has had on our ability to save lives to the unbelievable work our humane investigators do to make our community a better and safer place for animals, we have so very much to celebrate. And the thing is, there’s so much more we still want and need to do moving forward, and with your continued support and shared commitment, we’ll do just that. So, I’m still overwhelmed – but now it’s with gratitude – gratitude for a valued volunteer who took time out of a busy day to share her pride in the Cleveland APL and its people, gratitude for our accomplishments and the impact they’ve had on saving animals, and gratitude for YOU – for helping us to save so many lives and giving us so many reasons to celebrate. Is it any wonder they wound up with a dog named Cat? Cat, now named Cali, got her shelter moniker because she is a Catahoula Leopard mix. She came here through our dog transfer program from a shelter that had run out of space. The 3-year-old dog didn’t much care for being in her kennel, but she really blossomed when she spent some time behind our Adoptions Desk. She had the chance to interact with our staff, volunteers and a variety of shelter visitors and she responded beautifully. Lisa praised the staff for working so hard to find the right match for the Shahs and the dog. “Cali is a strongwilled dog, but after we made adjustments to our behavior and taught her a few rules, she became a very well-mannered dog,” Lisa told us in an e-mail a few months ago. “Cali even gets along with our new kitten just fine!” Cali is a dog for all seasons. She loves walking year round, hiking in the snow and rolling in the grass. She also enjoys lying on the Shahs’ deck watching squirrels and chipmunks. When she runs around the back yard, she encourages Lisa and Nik to chase her. Cali enjoying time in the back yard and rolling around in the grass. As first-time dog owners, Lisa and Nik had no idea how much love and joy a dog would bring into their lives. “We honestly can’t believe how lucky we are.” Lisa said. Q104’s morning show team of Jen Toohey, Allan Fee, and Glenn Anderson hosted the 6th Annual Pledge for Pets Radiothon on May 13 and 14. The event raised more than $124,000, and equally as exciting, during the two-day Radiothon event, the APL had an adoption promotion called Rockin’ Rescue that helped 80 animals find their new homes. collected donations for the APL’s animals from their families, friends and co-workers. We were so grateful again this year to have Travis Hafner of the Cleveland Indians and his wife, Amy, sponsor our Q Cash Kids program and to have Joe Thomas of the Cleveland Browns and his wife and APL volunteer, Annie, sponsor our Q Cash School program. During 18 hours on the air, Toohey and Fee shared compelling, heartwarming, real-life stories that captured the spirit of the Cleveland APL’s mission, our animals, and the special people who rescue, rehabilitate, and care for them. Our top fund-raising school this year was St. Ambrose in Brunswick. The track and field team consisting of 73 track stars in grades 4 through 8 ran laps that totaled more than 40 miles and raised more than $1,000 for our animals. To celebrate their fund-raising efforts, an assembly was held with Joe and Annie Thomas and Toohey and Fee. Over the past six years, the Pledge for Pets Radiothon has raised more than $760,000 for the animals at the Cleveland APL. Words cannot express our gratitude to Jen Toohey, Allan Fee, Glenn Anderson and the entire Q104 team for their continued commitment and compassion in engaging their listeners to open their hearts to our animals! Leading up to the Radiothon, APL supporters signed up to be Q Cash Captains, Kids or Schools and Save the date! The 7th Annual Q104 Pledge for Pets Radiothon will take place on May 11th and May 12th, 2012. Thank you to all of our sponsors and to everyone else who made the 6th Annual Q104 Cleveland APL Pledge for Pets Radiothon such an amazing success! He just needed to make sure Heather knew it, too. First he had to divert her attention from two other cats who had approached her. So he came out of the corner of the room and persuaded Heather to sit on the floor. The 12 ½-pounder settled on her lap and whenever the other cats came around, Whiskers swatted at them. “It was clear (Whiskers) had claimed me as his,” Heather said. It’s no wonder Whiskers was so determined to go home with Heather. He once had been a stray and was having trouble finding the right adopter. Even so, he was initially a little intimidated in his new home. “He attempted to hide under my dresser, but he was too fat and got stuck,” Heather recalled. Whiskers got over his fear and stopped trying to hide when Heather offered him a can of tasty cat food. He also got a new name: Albert – after “Fat Albert.” “Ever since then, he’s been my sidekick and best buddy,” Heather said. “He’s also quite the talker, and he wakes me up every morning with a chorus of meows and purrs.’’ “Albert has truly made my life much happier, and I look forward to the many years we have together.” We are excited to announce that the Cleveland APL’s 2012 Annual Pet Calendar will be available for sale beginning on November 7. August 2011 Pet Patter 8pgs Q32011v1.indd 11 11 7/27/11 1:54 PM Become A Cage Sponsor! Until They Find Their New Home and Family... The Cleveland Animal Protective League lovingly cares for thousands of homeless, injured and abused animals each year. For some, their cage at the APL, complete with a warm bed, toys, plenty of food and water, and lots of TLC, is the only “home” they have ever known. For others, it’s a temporary home until Lady was with us 4 months and 8 days. Adopted! they find the love of another family. For all of them, it’s the reason they’re getting a second chance. Our annual cage sponsors bring hope and comfort to our animals while they Brownie was with us 1 month and 6 days. Adopted! wait for their future mom or dad to adopt them and take them home— permanently. We ask that you help us to provide all of the care and love Melanie was with us 6 months and 12 days. Adopted! they need while they are with us by becoming a cage sponsor. Your cage sponsorship will be recognized with a plaque on a cage in our cat, dog or small mammal adoption center areas. You may choose to make your cage sponsorship in honor or in memory of a special pet or person or you may choose to advertise your business. Cage sponsorships are renewable every year. At the Cleveland Animal Protective League, healthy, friendly animals stay with us until they are adopted. We all know a cage in a shelter is not a permanent home, but with your cage sponsorship, we can make it a temporary home away from home until they have one of their own by providing all the care that is needed—and that they so rightfully deserve. For cage sponsorship opportunities please see below. 2011 CLEVELAND ANIMAL PROTECTIVE LEAGUE ANNUAL CAGE SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM Yes, I would like to sponsor a cage at the Cleveland Animal Protective League.
