Welcome! A Message from the Festival Chair On behalf of our dedicated staff, it is my privilege to welcome you to the fifteenth annual Frederick Celtic Festival. Whether this is your first or fifteenth Celtic festival, we hope you’ll discover something new and unique among the heritage-filled sights and sounds here in the gentle hills of Carroll County. We are excited to have our wounded warriors returning for the third year to compete alongside our amateur and professional athletes on Glenfiddich Field in the Highland Games. One of the new features at our Festival is the Celtic Komedy Korner, a new concept for Celtic Festivals. We also are excited to bring back by popular demand the whisky tasting at our Special Events tent. Our Royal Joseph C. Wiggington Sponsor William Grant & Sons will feature its 2015 Frederick Celtic Festival Chair signature Scotch and Irish whiskies together Past President, Armstrong Clan Society with an educational discussion on the history Past President, Saint Andrew’s Society and fine points of the “water of life.” of Mid-Maryland We are honored to have as our Charitable Beneficiary Warrior 360, a local wounded warrior-run organization dedicated to helping wounded warrior veterans move forward with their lives. Led by Captain Mark Little, who is competing on the athletic field, they are here today promoting their organization and raising much needed funds for the men and women they serve. Please take a moment to stop by their tent and see why we are so honored to have them here. Ticket sales from tonight’s Benefit Concert will be donated — in full — to Warrior 360. Our annual British Car Show, sponsored by the Clustered Spires British Car Club, is also donating the proceeds from its registrations to Warrior 360. Please take some time to see these gems from across the pond on display today. Finally, I would like to thank the town of Mount Airy and Mayor Patrick Rockinberg, who have welcomed us and supported our mission to spread the Celtic Arts, History, and Heritage to the Mid-Maryland area. Without the town, together with its business and community organizations, it would be very difficult to pull this event together. So, thank you for coming! Enjoy everything this Festival has to offer, and celebrate the day with us here in beautiful Mount Airy, Maryland. 4 Honorary Festival Chair We are very pleased to announce this year’s Honorary Festival Chair Admiral Paul F. Originally used to measure out grain, the twostone Light Weight is 28 lbs. Contestants must keep at least one foot within the sidelines of the 4'6" wide and 9' deep throwing box at all times. The clachneart, or Open Stone Toss, is one of the most ancient tests of strength that developed into today's track and field shot put event. Contestants throw a 1618 lb. stone with a run-up or spinning approach, keeping at least one foot within the sidelines of the throwing box at all times. The standing Weight Over Bar tests brute strength and explosiveness. Contestants stand under a bar and throw a 56 lb. weight over it with one hand. Each athlete gets three attempts at each increasing height until there is a winner. Misses count against athletes in case of a tie. Throwing the massive rock quarryman's Hammer is a test of strength developed hundreds of years ago. Athletes throw the 22lb. heavy hammer with their feet remaining stationary, aided by metal spikes that are mounted to the bottoms of their boots and jammed into the ground. King of the Highland Games Heavy Events, Caber Toss tests strength and skill. A perfect score occurs when an athlete is able to turn the caber end-over-end, with the caber landing in line with the athlete's direction of momentum, resulting in a 12:00 score on an imaginary clock face. In Scotland, the traditional measure of weight is a "stone," which equals 14 pounds. Block weights weighing two stones (28 lbs.) and four stones (56 lbs.) were used to balance scales for measuring grain. These Heavy Weights were thrown by locals gathering around the grain store to determine who was the strongest man in the Named for the ancient festival in village. Based in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, Rathkeltair is highly regarded for its extraordinary energy, showmanship, and professionalism. Rathkeltair's name-sake is a famous historical site in County Down, Northern Ireland, also known as the "mound of Down." Besides being close to the village where drummer Nick Watson was born and raised, the band chose the name as a tip o’ the hat to its Celtic heritage. Rathkeltair has been featured at nearly every major Celtic Festival in North America over the past 12 years. As thousands of festival-goers will tell you, Rathkeltair always delivers and never disappoints! Visit them online at Rathkeltair.com. High Energy, Celtic Influenced, Rock Empty Flask blends traditional Celtic instruments, bagpipes, and rock music into a unique high energy Celtic influenced rock sound. Their website is EmptyFlask.org. 24 Guinness Pub Stage Performers Irish Swagger. Scottish Pride. Kilmaine Saints is a band formed on good whiskey and bad intentions. The brainchild of two members of a Harrisburg Pipe & Drum band, this side project was originally created with the sole intent of getting them free beer at St Patrick’s Day shows in the Central PA area (and might I add – mission accomplished). After incorporating the help of fellow members from the pipe band and other notable musicians from the area, they soon realized they were in for quite a ride. Since 2009 they have continued to pound through blistering, high-energy live sets that keep people singing along, stomping their feet, lifting their pints and shouting for more. With several hundred shows at pubs and festivals up and down the East Coast, two critically-acclaimed releases under their belts, national and international airplay, and an ever-expanding and extremely loyal fan base, it’s no wonder the world is starting to stand up and take notice. In short, the Kilmaine Saints are equal parts Irish swagger, Scottish pride, and whiskey. This explosive Celtic rock band from central PA will steal your heart, your spirit, and your pint when you’re not looking. Check them out online at KilmaineSaints.com. Blazing. Edgy. Eclectic. Dublin 5, formerly, The Rovers, were formed in 2006 and took on the new name in 2013. The name Dublin 5 is the region in Ireland where Ray Murphy, lead singer in the band, grew up as a child. Dublin 5 has taken the Celtic music scene by storm thanks to an eclectic mix of traditional roots and blazing instrumentals with an amped up rock twist. Their musicianship and show is nothing short of high octane. Their fan base is continually expanding and covers people of all ages from all walks of life. Dublin 5 are fronted by Ray Murphy (lead guitar) from Dublin, Ireland, and backed by Jenn Belle (fiddle), Gary Hewitt (bass), Jim Martin, (percussion), and drummer Kevin Shook. They are sure to keep you on edge until the final track has been played! Visit them online at DublinFive.com. 25 Harp Acoustic Stage Performers Celtic Aire is the premier Celtic and folk ensemble of the United States Air Force. In 2009, Celtic Aire deployed to Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar, and Kyrgyzstan in support of diplomatic and troop morale initiatives as a part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Celtic Aire honors those who have served, inspires American citizens to heightened patriotism and service, and positively impacts the global community on behalf of the U.S. Air Force and the United States of America. The excellence demonstrated by these Airmen musicians is a reflection of the excellence exhibited by Airmen stationed around the globe.
