Who we are
The Ballet School was born. Today it is internationally recognized as one of
the best Academies for the training of dancers.
1950s
Arturo Toscanini founded the School of The Scala Cadets to provide
historic continuity to the traditional Italian Lyric Opera.
1970
Tito Varisco, director of stage sets, gave life to the course for set builders
and designers, to pass on the excellence found in the creative and manual
abilities of Scala artists.

1991 Accademia del Teatro alla Scala was born as an internal
Department of Teatro alla Scala: the Department of Training
and Development.
Who we are
2001 Accademia was registered as a Foundation, structured in four
departments – Music, Ballet, Stage and Workshops,
Management – with the following Mission:
› Promoting and increasing education, training, retraining and
counseling of professional
profiles in the field of the
performing arts;
› Training of artistic and technical staff of Teatro alla Scala;
› Offering firsthand contact with the work world, allowing
students to acquire “on the job” competences, strengthened
by intensive internship experience.

The Academy of Lyric Opera

Founded by Riccardo Muti in 1997 under the artistic direction of Leyla
Gencer (who passed away in 2008), the Teatro alla Scala Academy of
Lyric Opera reflects the heritage of the ‘Scala Cadets’ school, which was
created under the auspices of Arturo Toscanini in the fifties to ensure
the transmission of traditional Italian opera. Through a teaching staff of
internationally renowned artists, such as Luis Alva, Renato Bruson,
Mirella Freni and Luciana Serra, the Academy prepares young singers
possessing a solid vocal and musical training for professional careers
through a two-year course that refines technique and interpretation.
Daily study is interwoven with the participation in Scala productions,
where students work alongside performers, conductors and directors of
international fame. Particular importance is also given to concerts in
Italy and abroad and participation in opera productions such as the
"Academy Project", a production created entirely by students and
which is included in the regular Scala season. Many alumni tour the
major Italian and foreign theaters: these singers include sopranos
Serena Farnocchia, Carmen Giannattasio, Anja Kampe, Irina Lungu, Nino
Machaidze and Teresa Romano, mezzo-sopranos Ketevan Kemoklidze,
Anita Rachvelishvili and Nino Surguladze, contralto Sonia Prina, tenors
Thiago Arancam, Leonardo Cortellazzi and Giuseppe Filianoti, baritones
Simon Bailey, Fabio Capitanucci, Massimo Cavalletti, Christian Senn and
Vincenzo Taormina, and bass singers Carlo Malinverno, Giovanni
Battista Parodi and Dejan Vatchcov.

THE ACCADEMIA SOLOISTS
LUDMILA BAUERFELDT
Bio
Born in Rio de Janeiro, she started her artistic studies at the Escola Técnica de Teatro "Martins Pena“. Since 2004 she
has undertaken a run of studies in vocal technique and lyric repertoire at the Conservatory of Rio. Nowdays she is
graduating at Rio de Janeiro Universit. She played the role of Gasparini in La canterina by F. J. Haydn (2009) and Lucy
in Il telefono by G. C. Menotti (2010). In 2009 she made her debut in Der Zwerg by A. von Zemlinsky. She followed
Masterclasses held by Mitsuko Shirai, Martin Schmidt, Marina Venuti, Mark Marlham. Winner, in 2008 of the first prize
at the International Contest "Bidù Sayão" in Belo Horizonte, she obtained in 2010 also the first prize and the audience
prize at the Rio Teatro Municipal Contest.
ANNA VICTOROVA
Born in Moscow, in 2006, Anna received her diploma from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. In 2008, she specialized
in singing with P.I. Scousnitchenko. She has gained much recognition in various competitions: First Place in the
International Glinka Competition in Russia, Second Place in the Maria Callas Grand Prix in Greece, Second Place in
the Elena Obraztsova Competition in Russia, Second Place in the 3rd Edition of the China Competition in China,
Third Place in the Galina Vishnevskaya Competition, First Place in the 12th Edition of the “Riccardo Zandonai”
International Competition for Young Opera Singers, Fourth Place in the Tchaikovsky Competition in Russia and First
Place in the Lysenko Competition in Ukraine. She has attended masterclasses with Grace Bumbry, Brigitte
Fassbaender, Mietta Sighele, Veriano Lucchetti, Mauro Trombetta, Veronica Dunne, Elena Obraztsova, Evgenij
Nesterenko. She sang the role of Olga in Tchaikovsky’s Evgenij Onegin at the Stanislavsky Theatre of Moscow and
at the Opera Studio of the Moscow Conservatory, Polina in Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades at both the Bolshoi
Theatre in Moscow and at the Latvian National Opera in Riga, Dalila in Saint-Saëns’ Samson et Dalila at the Anna
Livia Dublin Opera Festival, and Kate Pinkerton in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at the Stanislavsky Theatre of
Moscow. She has held concerts as a soloist in France, Austria, Lithuania, Japan and Germany. Some of her most
engaging performances include a Rachmaninov concert series in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, Verdi’s Requiem at
the Tonhalle of Zurich, Beethoven’s Symphony n.9 in Foggia, the closing concert in 2006 of the Russian Year in
China, and Tchaichovsky’s Capriccio Italiano, with the Luigi Cherubini Orchestra conducted by Isaac Karabtchevsky
at the musicaRivafestival in Riva del Garda in 2007. Between 2009 and 2011 she attends the Teatro alla Scala
Academy of Lyric Opera. In 2010 she was soloist in Pergolesi’s Salve Regina and Stabat Mater, conducted by
Daniele Rustioni at Festival MiTo in Milan
FILIPPO POLINELLI
Bio
Born in Tortona, Filippo began his singing studies at the age of 20. Shortly after starting his professional career, in
2006, he began to perform on stages of great prestige in Italy (Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Teatro Regio in Parma,
Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Teatro Massimo in Palermo) and abroad (Théatre Musical de Paris
Châtelet, Bad Wildbad Belcanto Opera Festival, Hong Kong Cultural Center, Tokyo International Forum),
performing with artists, conductors and directors of international fame (Placido Domingo, Renato Bruson, Leo
Nucci, Yuri Temirkanov, Zubin Mehta, Luca Ronconi). He has recorded for important recording companies, such
as TDK, Naïve, Naxos and Rai Trade. Between 2009 and 2011 he attended the Teatro alla Scala Academy of Lyric
Opera: he completed his two years of training in July and now following his third year. In 2010 he played Don
Parmenione in Rossini’s L’occasione fa il ladro, Academy Project 2010 in Jean-Pierre Ponnelle setting, conducted
by Daniele Rustioni and in 2011 he was Haly in Italiana in Algeri was Haly in Italiana in Algeri by G.Rossini
(Academy Project 2011).
JAEHEUI KWON
Born in Andong, South Korea, Jaeheui Kwon began to study music at the age of 18, receiving his diploma
in 2007 from the Kyungpook National University of Taegu. In 2007 he received a scholarship for
advanced training at the International Academy of Music in Rome, where he received his diploma in
2009. In 2008, he did a Masterclass with Nicola Martinucci. In Korea, in 2000, he won the Special Award
for Religious Music, and in 2004 he placed third in the “Inge Contest”. In 2009, he received the Special
Award at the “Francesco Albanese International Contest” in Naples.
He has performed as a soloist in Naples in Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with the Teatro San Carlo
Orchestra and Chorus and in Schumann’s Faust-Szenen with the Teatro alla Scala Orchestra and Chorus,
conducted by Pinchas Steinberg. Between 2009 and 2011 he studies at Teatro alla Scala Academy of Lyric
Opera. In 2010 he sang the role of Don Eusebio in Rossini’s L’occasione fa il ladro, on stage at Scala in the
historical setting signed by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, conducted by Daniele Rustioni.
