PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
BY
OTTO SO
O
nce again, The Fabulous 50’s Ford Club of
Manitoba held the biggest car show of the year:
“The 11 th Annual Flashback Weekend” on
September 11, 2005. Congratulation to our members:
Jack Harris who won the Best Cadillac with his 1946 4dr.
sedan, Pete Hiebert who won the Best 20 & 30 Ford with
his 1923 Model T Touring and Gary Lambert who won
the Best Street Rod with his 1926 Ford T Coupe Hot Rod.
On that day, after our monthly General Meeting, many
members went to see the fabulous cars in the car show.
Our 35th Annual Corn Roast was another successful
one. Thanks to the organizer(s) and the participant(s).
That chili was the best I’ve ever tasted! Of course, 35
years must not seem so long to Ed Turner, who celebrated
his 91st birthday at the Corn Roast. Please see the story
and pictures inside.
Our Annual Banquet and 45th Anniversary Celebration
will be on Saturday, October 15, 2005. A Chinese buffet
dinner will be served. The theme of the evening is
“Flashback 45 years”. In addition to the award
presentations, lucky draws, slide shows and the 25th
Anniversary Celebration movie, we are asking any of our
members or their friends to share some story about the
club, cars, trips etc. So, please take a few minutes and
write down a few points and participate in the celebration.
I cannot spell SUCCESS without U.

BRYNE MCKAY
On this month’s cover is a picture of a cake celebrating
the 35 th Annual Corn Roast and our Club’s 45 th
Anniversary. Otto So has added some fireworks to the
picture to make it even more of a celebration. I was not
able to make it but by reading Jack and Yvonne’s write
up and viewing Otto’s pictures I can see everyone had a
great time. See article in this Side Mount.
I did make it to The Antique Cars & Old Lace show. In
fact I won a prize. Unfortunately there was no skill
involved, just the luck of the draw. As I have always said
“I would rather be lucky than good”. The show was a
great success both in weather and number of
participants. Congratulations to Harry Mortimer and the
other organizers.
The Club Projects person (that would be me) says we
need 6 more orders to go to production on the Melton/
Leather club jackets. Contact Bryne A.S.A.P. It would
be nice to wear them this winter.
I would like to thank Derek Thille for submitting the
article found in this month’s Side Mount on his 1929
McLaughlin Buick. If you have a story please submit it
or contact me and we can do it together.
In the ‘Looking Back’ section I inserted two stories from
the club newsletter covering the First Club Picnic on May
29, 1960 and the First City Tour in July of 1960. I hope
you enjoy reading part of our 45 year history.
See you at the Annual Banquet!
ANNOUNCEMENTS
BY ELEANOR BRUNETTE
Our deepest sympathies go out to Alice
Billson and family on the passing of her
husband Harold on September 17th at St.
Boniface Hospital. Harold was one of our
longtime members who always travelled to
club events with Sandy Fraser until Sandy's
passing. He will be sadly missed by family
and many friends in our car club.
Our condolences also go out to Diane and
Jim Drummond on the passing of Diane's
mom.
A message of cheer goes out to George
Ewing who had been in hospital for several
weeks and is very happy to be home
recuperating and looking forward to
celebrating 58 years of marriage with Ruth
on October 3rd. Great stuff, have a wonderful
anniversary..
Congratulations to Mort and Darlene
McKechnie on the birth of their grandson
Alexander John on August 20th. Little A.J.
weighed in at 8 pounds 14 ounces in
Chatham, Ontario. Proud parents are Gregg
and Megan McKechnie. Mort and Darlene
also received the Border Hills Car Club
Choice Award at the Morden Corn and Apple
Festival for their 1951 convertible.

ANTIQUE CARS & OLD LACE
STORY BY HARRY MORTIMER
PHOTOS BY BRYNE MCKAY
It has become a tradition that the Manitoba Classic & Antique
Auto Club partner with the Costume Museum of Canada in
presenting “Antique Cars and Old Lace”. This year it was held
on Sunday August 21.
The day started cool and windy but before you knew it the
sun was shining on beautiful paint on old tin. Some cars arrived
by 9:00 am and some were still on the grounds after 4:00. About
115 took part of which 20 were MCAAC Club cars.
Besides the vast variety of cars, trucks and motorcycles there
was a good turnout of tractors and thresh machine
demonstrations. The display of scaled down tractors on lawn
mower chassis was well received.
Besides the yard full of vintage vehicles, the parking lot was
buzzing with people buying goods from art and craft and antique
vendors. Displays filled the Heritage Gallery and the major
exhibit in the Van Slyke Gallery is “Costumes on Canvas”.
Fashions from the 1860’s to 1970’s were featured. How many
of you visited the Gallery and were able to identify the 1950’s
car parts in one scene?
Events like “Antique Cars and Old Lace” do not happen
without volunteers. I really enjoyed my day thanks to MCAAC
members who helped with the parking and registration of
vehicles. Thank you Charlie Steeple, Jack Harris, Chuck
Ingram, Bryne McKay, Cecilia Mortimer, Marilynn Schultz,
Art Barker and Paul Horch.
A “Jolly Good Time” was had by all!

35TH ANNUAL MCAAC CORN ROAST
STORY BY JACK & YVONNE MAVINS
PHOTOS BY OTTO SO
For the second year in a row, weather in our area was not
conducive to growing anything. Just prior to our date of Aug.
28th, it appeared that Smith’s corn would not be available again
this year. On checking around, corn in general was not readily
available or was of very poor quality. In discussions at one of
our local tours, “MY LADIES” (as I now call them) - Rita Hayes,
Karen Smith, Rhoda Cook and Sharon Wilson - put their heads
together and offered to expand our food offering with beans,
chili & salads to dress up the wieners. We were all set!!
Then at the last minute, Richard phoned and said he thought
he could come up with 6 doz. corn. An unexpected bonus things were looking up!! Next, Otto emailed me that he would
be bringing a cake (45th club & 35th corn roast anniversaries).
The result was a veritable feast and every one of the 56 people
attending had at least one cob of corn.
It was good to see such regular loyal long time members as
the Blanchettes, Stroppas, Penners & Cunninghams and Ed
Turner who comes to celebrate his birthday (91 this year). He
was treated to a rousing HAPPY BIRTHDAY song.!
The weather was great - no rain, no mosquitoes -a very
pleasant day as usual in Anola!!
Our thanks to:
- Gatekeepers - Bob & Debbie Stevenson
- Cooks - Art Barker & Marilyn Schultz
- and to ALL the members who turned out to make this
another in a long line of successful outings and to all who
volunteered to lend a hand at anything & everything that needed
doing.
See you all next year.

HALFMOON IMPROMTU LUNCH
STORY BY BRYNE MCKAY
PHOTOS BY OTTO SO
Jack Harris & Paul Horch asked John Ewing to spread
the word that there would be an impromtu lunch at the
Half Moon on Monday September 5th. John Ewing
notified everyone by email to save up their money to buy
gas and be there around noon. Jack Harris said there
were more than a dozen vehicles with at least 20 people.
Most went to Rita and Wayne Hayes' home after lunch
for more fellowship.
LOOKING BACK
NEWS LETTER:
FIRST CLUB PICNIC
(JUNE ‘60)
The First club picnic was held May 29th. Eight vintage cars
participated along with several members who came
modern. Among them were Dave Miller’s beautiful Cord,
Bob Thomas’ immaculate 1928 Studebaker Victorian
Coupe, Eric Farmer’s stately Packard and Bert Stewart’s
1937 Olds Convertible. Model A’s were driven by Bob
Patterson, Dave Friesen, Don Davidson and Jim Strait, who
drove all the way from Neepawa in his Model ‘A’ convertible
coupe. Leaving from the Dominion store parking lot, we
first drove to Lower Fort Garry where a stop was made to
tour the Fort; from there we toured to Selkirk. After a picnic
lunch at Selkirk Park, the members took time out to inspect
and take occasional drivers in each others cars.
FIRST CITY TOUR (AUGUST ‘60)
Well, it looks like our first city tour was quite a success.
About 200 spectators gathered at the Dominion Store
to see us off. Departure time was approximately 12:30 p.m. and we
were guided down Corydon Ave. by four of Winnipeg’s finest, who
incidentally did an excellent job. Thirteen cars were present, but despite
this ominous number our luck couldn’t have been better. First stop
was City Park where we caused considerable commotion, what with
traffic tie-ups and many curious onlookers. From there we headed to
Portage Ave. amidst the honking and waiving of drivers in more modern
machinery. We then turned out on Main St. and proceeded through
Norwood and St. Vital. The tour ended at the new Millionaire Drive-In
on St Marys Road, where we were the guests of Lorne Ritchie for a
delicious feast of hamburgers and root beer.
It seems these past club activities have increased the feeling of
fellowship among club members, as well as making the club more
publicly known. If we can continue this way our club is bound to thrive.
A special thanks should go out to Jack McGuigan and Bob Spear, who
did such a good job of organizing our tour.

INSIDE STORY
1929 MCLAUGHLIN BUICK MODEL
51 CLOSE COUPLED SPORT SEDAN
STORY BY DEREK THILLE
PHOTOS BY BRYNE MCKAY
In the spring of 2005, we received an e-mail from a family trying
to settle an estate. I tried to help them out with the value of two
cars their father owned. They told me about a 1929 Buick and
curiosity got the better of me. After a few phone calls and emails, we went to look at the car. Suzanne really liked the styling
and we were able to agree to a price with the family. A cheque
was written and the car was ours. I was able to get a bunch of
information from Bill at the 1929 Silver Anniversary Buick Club
and he also put me in touch with the Buick Club of America
technical advisor. I’ve learned a lot already, but have much to
learn about these older Buicks. So far, all I have done other
than gather information is to move it from Altona to storage
space that I rent near Brunkild where it resides with the ’52
Roadmaster and ’61 Invicta.
This car is a 1929 McLaughlin Buick Model 51 Close Coupled
Sport Sedan. It has a 309.6 ci inline 6 with 4.3:1 compression
and uses a sliding gear transmission. Fuel is delivered by a
Marvel 3 jet updraft carburetor. It is a Series 129 car – the
series also happens to be the wheelbase of the car. It has 32 x
6.50 tires on 20 inch rims with the optional artillery wheels. The
factory price was $1875 (for an American Buick – I haven’t yet
found any similar Canadian info for the McLaughlin). Shipping
weight was 4230 lb and a total of 7014 of this model were
produced. Options include front and rear bumpers, dual side
mount spare tires, and the previously mentioned wide spoke
artillery wheels.
According to the information I have found so far, Buick used
3 colour combinations on these cars – light and dark green,
light and dark blue, and tan with dark brown. The lighter colour
was used on the main body and the dark colour was nearly
black. This car is currently a blue-grey, but since it has a green
interior and there is some exposed underlying green paint, I
believe it is the combination of Boise Green and Ledo green.
There is a wealth of information to be found about these
cars online. Here are a few.
· http://www.buickclub.org/ - The Buick Club of America. The
forums are particularly useful.
· http://www.29buick.ca/ - 1929 Silver Anniversary Buick Club
· http://1929buick.com/ - A site devoted to 1929 Buicks which
includes a forum
· http://www.mts.net/~dthille/29Model51.html - My own page
about this car
I have started checking out eBay for parts and it is surprising
what is available out there for original parts. Some hobbyists
are also reproducing parts and making them available to other
1929 Buick owners.
Bryne had a number of questions listed in a previous SMR
with a photo of this car including “Why?”. I am not sure I have
the answer to that. After we got home after making the deal in
April, Suzanne turned to me and said, “You know it was a
foregone conclusion that we would be buying it once we went
to look at it” (or something very similar). It was always my
intent never to purchase a Buick older than ’36 as that is the
year they went to hydraulic brakes. But, Suzanne liked the
looks of the old girl, and she is a Canadian car, so we don’t feel
bad about keeping it relatively local. This car spent many years
participating in the Altona Sunflower Festival parade. I hope
she makes it back there someday.

Everyone got very wet when the rain turned into a downpour.
Yes, that is hail in my hand. We got some of that too.
