WES WIEBE`S 1931 MODEL A PICK UP
VOL. ISSUE 08 55 AUGUST 2014 WES WIEBE’S 1931 MODEL A PICK UP MCAAC’S PONY CORRAL CRUISE NITE WAS RAINED OUT BUT RESCHEDULED FOR PHOTO BY OTTO SO SEPTEMBER 21ST CANADA AUTO 1688 St. Matthews Avenue @ Route 90 Winnipeg, Manitoba R3H 0A2 (204) 775-CARS (204) 775-2277 Fax: (204) 788-1587 Email: [email protected] www.canadaautoservice.com SERVING WINNIPEG SINCE 1935 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE BY BRYNE MCKAY J uly was a busy month with us going to the Half Moon twice, once for our monthly luncheon and again as the Feature Club to celebrate their 76 th Anniversary. We were fed and entertained twice by senior centres. We were scheduled to be the Feature Club at the Pony Corral but that was rained out. Hopefully it will be rescheduled for September 21st. By the time you read this we will be well into August and will have enjoyed the Planes Trains & Auto Tour and another Half Moon luncheon. Later in the month is one of our most popular events, the Corn Roast at the Mavins. Remember to check the Side Mount ‘Upcoming Events’ and watch out for emails from Paul Horch. At our August 14th general meeting we will be joined by Gary Glowa the Safety and Legislation chair and possibly other executive members from MAAC. Gary will be attending to hear any concerns we have, especially our concerns with pricing of the Collector Plate insurance. Be sure to attend, it should be very informative. For several years we have been trying to reduce our costs of printing the newsletter by encouraging members to switch to email copy only. We have had some success. Out of 185 members only 55 receive the hard copy. Since the last increase in postal rates it would be advantageous to further reduce the number of hard copies. It costs $1.75 each to print and 1.80 each to mail. In a year that equals $42.60 per member. You can see the $42.00 membership fee (hard copy) doesn’t even cover the cost of the newsletter. Plus, approximately half are mailed to Honorary Life members who have their membership fee waived. If you receive a hard copy and have an email address please consider switching to email only. Whether you are reading this on your computer or on paper enjoy this month’s newsletter. ☺ NEXT GENERAL MEETING • Thursday, Aug. 14 @ 7:00 p.m • Headingley Community Centre at 5353 Portage Ave. EDITOR’S NOTES BY JEFF RENTZ Vol. 55 Issue #08 August 2014 — Sidemount Reporter 1 AROUND THE CLUB... MCAAC 7 ANNUAL SHOW & SHINE TH WORDS BY PAUL HORCH PHOTOS BY GEORGE PENNER The 7th annual MCAAC Show and Shine was held Saturday, June 7th at the Headingley Community Centre and Jim’s Garages. The day was nice and sunny, but a bit cool, and very windy. All in all, much better weather than we’ve had for a long time. Cars started arriving and registering around 9 AM. We had a very good turnout with 74 cars registered and another 25 to 30 not registered. We collected 195 pounds of non-perishable food items for Winnipeg Harvest, an all-time best. A highlight of the day was seeing Ed Turner who will be 100 years old in a few months. Ed was in good spirits and enjoyed the day. Jim Pearn who is responsible for the museum being built, also showed up for a while. I was fortunate to get several pictures of Ed and Jim. For many years, Ed and Jim were very active in club events and restoration of ancient automobiles. It was great to see them together at the show. As usual, we gave out die cast model cars as prizes in various categories: Best GM went to John Ewing for his metallic blue 1947 Buick Roadmaster convertible. 1947 was a wonderful year...just ask me why. Close to 40 members showed up on a sunny spring day Best Import went to Lawrence Vermeulen for his cute little for lunch at the Half Moon on Easter Monday, April 21/14. green 1953 Austin A40 Somerset Sedan Wayne Hayes, Gary Hammond and Russell Manhard even Best Antique went to Wally Hemming for his red 1931 Ford brought out their club cars. Model A Roadster Best Ford went to John Lambrecht for his blue and white 1955 Monarch Lucerne, a rare Canadian only model John Lamprecht: Best Ford Award 1955 (Monarch Lucerne) Best Truck went to A. Shimonek for his really yellow 1963 Studebaker Champ ½ ton truck. Very sharp. John Ewing Best: GM Award (1947 Buick Roadmaster convertible) A G Shimonek: Best Truck Award (1963 Studebaker Champ 1/2 ton) Best Import went to Lawrence Vermeulen for his cute little Lawrence Vermeulen: Best Foreign Car Award (1953 Austin A40 Somerset Sedan) Vol. 55 Issue #08 August 2014 — Sidemount Reporter 2 Best Mopar went to Henry Martens for his multicoloured 1959 Plymouth Fury Many thanks to Wolf Fuhr for once again organizing this show, and to everyone else who helped out with registration and judging and anything else necessary. You know who you are. Also thanks Rob Nowasad, and the Museum folks who cooked the great hot dogs. Much appreciated. Next year it would be great to see a lot more MCAAC club cars at this event. We only had 30 club cars show up. There are several hundred good restored cars in this club which are very seldom seen. None of us are getting any younger.
