President’s Message

President and Professor of Geography
Welcome to the 2016 Miami University Undergraduate Research
Forum. In its 22nd year, the Forum is the premier event celebrating
independent inquiry by undergraduate students at Miami University.
This program is your guide to the more than 300 research projects
being presented at this year’s event.
At Miami University, we’ve designated 2015-2016 as the Year of
Creativity and Innovation. But while we’re making a point to highlight
them this year, the fact is that creativity and innovation have been
helping to define the Miami experience for decades.
I encourage you to learn more about our students’ creativity and
innovation by engaging with the young researchers presenting at
today’s event. They’ll tell you that the process they went through to
obtain their results is as valuable as the results themselves.
That’s something that all of Miami’s undergraduate researchers
experience – not just the 400 presenting today, but also the more than
1600 others who have worked with professors on funded research this
year.
I offer my congratulations to the 22nd cohort of Miami University
Undergraduate Research Forum presenters and my many thanks to the
students, faculty, and staff who give us this chance to showcase and
celebrate the creativity and innovation of Miami undergraduates, not
just in this Year of Creativity and Innovation, but year after year.

College of Arts and Science Dean’s Scholars Program
Undergraduates who have exhibited excellence in the classroom and the ability to take on the extra challenges of research
and scholarly work may be invited to participate in a Dean’s Scholar Program within their division. Individual departments
develop their own criteria for selecting scholars, but those selected must have conceived and proposed a project that is
endorsed by a faculty mentor. During the senior year, Dean’s Scholars conduct independent study with a departmental
mentor. The scholar and the mentor each receive a professional expense stipend. Students conduct the study under the
individual department’s independent study or departmental honors course numbers, thereby earning academic credit for
the project. Dean’s Scholars projects culminate in significant work of scholarship aimed towards national/international
publication/ performance/dissemination. For more information, contact the chair of your College of Arts and Science
department.
Maher Zouhary Undergraduate Research Awards
The Maher Undergraduate Research Awards are given every year to a student majoring in political science. The program was
established in 1980 with a gift from alumna Kathleen Maher Zouhary. Students who wish to apply for this award must submit
through the Undergraduate Research Grants Program sponsored by the Undergraduate Research Committee of the University
Senate.
Miami University First Year Research Experience (FYRE)
Miami’s Office of Research for Undergraduates sponsors the First Year Research Experience (FYRE) Program. Over 400
Miami students have participated in the program since 2009. The program aims to impact student achievement and retention
through involvement in research and inquiry at the very start of your college experience. The program engages students in
meaningful relationships with Miami faculty, graduate students and your peers outside of the classroom.
Doctoral-Undergraduate Opportunities for Scholarship (DUOS)
The FYRE program provides students with authentic, hands-on research experiences in small teams led by research-active

Named for the original sponsoring foundation, the Hughes Summer internships are available for undergraduates interested in
the biomedical sciences. Approximately 15 internships per year for Miami University students are supported with funds from
the College of Arts and Science. Students in this program work with Miami faculty from the departments of biology, chemistry
or microbiology. The internship is 10 weeks and carries a participant stipend and provides twelve semester hours of credit will
be earned and tuition costs (but not general fees) are waived.

Scholastic Enhancement Program - Undergraduate Research Option
FRYE/URO (Undergraduate Research Option) is a living, learning research community open to first-year students who are
part of the Scholastic Enhancement (SEP) program. It is a small community of students who live together in a common
first-year residence hall. Each student is paired with a faculty sponsor who engages the student in some aspect of his/her
research. The mission of the undergraduate research option is to improve the achievement and retention of SEP students in a
residential setting through research partnerships with faculty during their first year at Miami University.

Undergraduate Research Award Program
Open to students from all disciplines, the Undergraduate Research Award Program exists to encourage small-scale
independent research projects by Miami undergraduate students. The goal of the program is to foster discovery and creativity
while providing students an opportunity to work through the process of applying for grant funding. To enhance the learning
experience of preparing these small grant applications, the steps and processes involved have been purposely designed to
mimic those generally required when submitting standard grant applications to federal, state and/or private foundations. The
Undergraduate Research Committee of the University Senate reviews proposals and distributes funds from Provost’s Office
as small grants. Approximately 100 projects are supported yearly with awards up to $1,000. The aim and result of projects
supported by the program may be modest as long as the work can reasonably be interpreted as research or a creative
endeavor. Although projects must be initiated and developed by student applicant(s), a faculty member must also sponsor

Undergraduate Summer Scholars Program
Research Coordinator in the Office of Research for Undergraduates for the many hours of work to manage the details of this
Miami’s nationally-recognized program offers a premier undergraduate research experience. The USS initiative heightens the
intellectual challenge of the learning environment at Miami University by supporting students in research and other creative
activities during the summer under the supervision of faculty. Funds from the Provost’s Office make 100 awards available
per year. Each award includes a stipend for the student, a student allowance for supplies and services, 6 credit hours with
academic fees waived, plus a faculty mentor allowance. Open to students from all disciplines, the focus of this 9-week
summer program is the individual student/faculty mentor relationship. Applications by individual student/faculty pairs form
the basis for subsequent allocation of USS positions to departments. Although coordinated by the Office of Research for
Undergraduates (ORU), departments are primarily responsible for selecting particular student/faculty projects, approving
signature event.

The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) is a national non-profit educational
organization that provides research opportunities for students and faculty. Representing over
900 colleges and universities, this organization provides publications and outreach activities
to share strategies for establishing undergraduate research programs. CUR defines
undergraduate research as an inquiry or investigation conducted by an undergraduate
student that makes an original intellectual or creative contribution to a discipline.
The mission of CUR is to support and promote high-quality undergraduate studentfaculty collaborative research and scholarship. The council achieves its vision through the
efforts of members within varying disciplines including arts and humanities, biology,
chemistry, geosciences, health sciences, mathematics and computer science, physics and
astronomy, psychology, and social sciences.
As an enhanced institutional member of CUR, Miami University offers faculty
members, administrators, students, and staff the opportunity to join the Council on
Undergraduate Research at no additional cost. Benefits to members include opportunities to
