Dear Friends,
As I reflect on my 41 years on faculty at the UCSF School of Pharmacy, 14 of those as dean, I
remember years filled with tremendous accomplishment and deep appreciation for your support.
This past year was no different.
As budgets tighten, your financial generosity becomes ever more important to our success.
You are directly responsible for helping us accomplish our plans to create a new framework for
therapeutics discovery and development, ensure that patients get the best results from their
medicines, and shape the future of pharmacy science and education by working in fresh and
collaborative ways.
You will notice that the next couple pages of this honor roll look a bit different than in years past
because I think it’s important to show you the impact of your gifts in the context of our financial
picture.
What you will see – not surprisingly given the current economic climate of the state, nation
and world – is that California state funding of the UCSF School of Pharmacy has decreased
significantly and tuition has increased to help absorb this decline.
You will also see how much your contributions mean to our students and faculty members.
Almost 40 percent of your gifts support student scholarships; another 40 percent support our
exceptional researchers; and the rest ensure that we stay competitive by, for example, having the
resources to attract the best new faculty and teach in exciting new ways.

For the 31st year in a row, the UCSF School of Pharmacy has
received more National Institutes of Health (NIH) research
funding than any other pharmacy school in the nation. That’s
because our researchers consistently make astounding
discoveries. But their excellence also comes with a cost. The
more research funding they bring in, the more infrastructure
is needed to support their continuing success – support that
must be provided by the school, and at dollar amounts above
and beyond what is allotted by the NIH. Private gifts help
cover these expenses that keep our researchers at the top of
their game.

Because of the decrease in state funding as a percentage
of the school’s budget, the tuition and fee costs to students
have increased out of budget necessity – from $1 million in
2002 to $6 million in 2011. Private support, therefore, is ever
more important to the school and our students.

extremely tight economic time, especially in regards to

students, especially as tuition continues to rise to make
up for reductions in state funding

Chancellor and Husband’s Historic Gift to Student
Support Inspires Rodondis
UCSF Chancellor Susan Desmond-Hellmann,
MD, MPH, and her husband, Nicholas Hellmann,
MD, recently made an extraordinary gift to the
campus: $1 million for professional student
scholarships to be divided four ways between
the schools of dentistry, medicine, nursing and
pharmacy.
Each of the schools has received $250,000 by
securing a matching gift of $250,000, creating
the first Chancellor’s Endowed Scholarships at

UCSF,” says Lisa. “The combination of my edu-
cation and my mentors really allowed me to get
any job I wanted. Not that I didn’t work hard, but
I give a lot of credit to UCSF and the friends and
community I gained there. I believe in the power
of education.”
The Rodondis’ gift will support students who
are in financial need, demonstrate leadership
and show commitment to community service.
The largest donation ever to be received from
a past or present UCSF chancellor was motivated by the campus’s new educational fundraising
priority.
“I have a particular fondness for UCSF’s educational mission because that’s what brought me
here in the first place,” says Desmond-Hellmann,
who came to UCSF as an intern in 1982. “I knew
that I had landed at just the place I wanted to
be: one committed to training the very best
health care providers and researchers, but doing
it in an amazingly warm and nurturing environment.”
She continues, “I am determined to do what I
can to preserve that special culture and, in some
key ways, make it even better.”
Nick Hellmann, who met his wife while they
were both residents at UCSF, says, “We want to
help UCSF continue its leadership and excellence in professional education, and inspire other
alumni and friends to support our students.”
That was a motivation for the Rodondis’ gift,
as well. “I think it’s very important that we as
pharmacists and alumni step up our level of giving to help support the future practitioners and
leaders,” says Kevin. “I just hope it catches on.”
The generosity of these four alumni will make
a significant difference as the California state
budget cuts catapult tuition and fees, says
Mary Anne Koda-Kimble, PharmD ’69, dean
of the School of Pharmacy. Tuition and fees for
California residents have risen to $33,285, a 10
percent increase from 2010 to 2011. “Lisa and
Kevin, Sue and Nick are spectacular examples
of the power of alumni giving. They are people
who lead by example. They care deeply about
ensuring that our students continue to have access to leading educations, and they’ve acted
boldly to make that happen.”

Recruiting Young Central
Valley Students
A group of students attentively watches and takes notes as the pharmacist reviews a patient’s medication history. These students, however, are
much younger than your typical pharmacy trainees. As participants in
UCSF’s Early Conditional Acceptance Program (ECAP), they are barely
out of high school.
Based at UCSF’s Fresno campus, ECAP readies California’s Central
Valley teenagers for eventual acceptance into the doctor of pharmacy
(PharmD) program at UCSF. The goal is to address “the severe shortage of health care professionals in the Central Valley,” says Mitra Assemi,
PharmD ’97, “particularly providers who represent the same culturally
and linguistically diverse backgrounds of the residents of this region.”
Assemi is director of UCSF’s Fresno Pharmacy Education Program and
head of ECAP.
Youth who show promise in science and math are admitted into ECAP
as high school seniors. As they attend a college or university, they are
supported and mentored by UCSF and local pharmacists. Upon graduation, the students are guaranteed admission into UCSF’s PharmD program if they meet certain criteria. The first ECAP cohort will be graduating
from college and will have the opportunity to apply to UCSF this year.
While getting into pharmacy school at UCSF is a lofty goal, paying for it
can be even more intimidating for graduates of ECAP, who, for the most
part, come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Luckily, OptumRx has
stepped in.
“The pharmacy profession has been struggling for decades to attract
diverse trainees who will eventually go back to serve the communities
they came from. The problem is that we aren’t reaching them at a young
enough age. By the time they reach college, it’s too late,” says John
Jones, senior vice president of professional practice and pharmacy policy
for OptumRx.

OptumRx has generously donated funds both for a scholarship for the
first incumbent student, as well as for the administrative functioning of
the program. “Having a partner like OptumRx – one that truly embraces
the raison d’être of this program – is just so inspiring” says Assemi.
There is always the chance that a student might follow a pharmacyrelated path through high school and college and then ultimately decide
to enter another profession, like engineering or medicine. “I would not
consider that a failure,” says Jones. “If a student is inspired by pharmacy
to better his or her community and the nation through any science-related discipline, I’d say that’s a success.”
