VA4WDA Members,
I hope your summer has gone well and now the kids are
gearing back up for school. We at VA4WDA have been out
and about attending many of your events and picnics. Our
membership numbers are up and things are looking
positive.
We have started a new program with Southern Jeep, Ram,
Dodge and Fiat of Norfolk that is going to raise our
membership numbers even higher and get our name out to
the new Jeep owners in the Tidewater area. Southern has
agreed to purchase a year’s membership to VA4WDA with
any purchase of a new Jeep Wrangler. So if you’re looking
to get a new Jeep, go to Southern by the Norfolk Airport!
They have also signed up to be a Business Member!

At the events and at my own club meetings I have been
receiving questions about what VA4WDA is doing with
money and donations received. This was all covered at the
Annual meeting but here is a quick re-cap. The association
puts forth a budget to the membership at the Annual
Meeting for approval. Once this budget is approved this is
the financial guideline that the BOD needs to follow. At the
end of the year we need to report whether we were under
or over budget and why. Since I have been on the BOD (8
years) we have always been under budget.

Legal Fund: This is set aside to assist with legal fees to
help keep public lands open to our sport. Lately we have
donated to the Outer Banks Preservation Association to
assist in the fight to keep the beaches open in the North
Carolina Outer Banks. You may ask why we would
contribute to an issue in another state. Well we have two of
the association’s clubs that hold large fishing tournaments
down there annually. All funds go to Outer Banks
organizations. So it stays down there to help. So we want
to support them in their efforts. We also have many of our
members that go down there throughout the year to enjoy
driving on the beaches and fishing from them. We have
also in the past donated funds out of this to United to assist
with their fight in other areas.
Land Use Fund: This is used to fund VA4WDA sponsored
clean-ups. We have held several in the George
Washington National Forest and this year we are going to
be supporting the Beech Klean, an event hosted by KMA
on the 4th of October in Duck, NC.
So I hope this has answered some of these questions that
our members have asked. Don’t think that we are collecting
funds and just sitting on them for a rainy day. We do
appreciate the donations and always plan to use the wisely
to support our sport! Remember you and your club can
approach the BOD of VA4WDA at any time to request or
apply for these grants and VA4WDA sponsorship for an
event that will put a good light on the association.

VA4WDA Land Use
When we show a surplus we transfer that money and any
donations from individuals and/or clubs that hold fund
raisers for VA4WDA to three funds (Trail Grant, Legal, and
Land Use). These funds are set aside for certain projects
and/or issues that the BOD of VA4WDA think we should be
contributed to.
Trail Grant Re-imbursement Fund: This has to be applied
for by a recognized member club of VA4WDA. The
application can request funds up to $500 per project to

From the Land Use desk
Fall trail rides are popular with many members and so I am
arranging a trail cleanup in the GWNF outside of
Harrisonburg, Virginia. The date is Saturday October 25th,
and early arrivals will be camping in the North River
Campground 20 miles West of Staunton off US-250. The
target area will be upper Union Springs Road leading down
from Flagpole and rather than a dumpsite this will be a
simple road/trail cleanup. Those not camping but instead
meeting us Saturday morning can meet at the U.S. Forest
Service boundary on Union Springs at 10:00am Saturday.
Our 2014 Earth Day cleanup in April was a big success
and created a lot of goodwill with the Forest Service. I think
of this as a Fall "thanksgiving" cleanup after a good season
of wheeling. See you there.

Capital City to Host Its 29th Annual Surf
Fishing Tournament
Over the weekend of October 18 – 19th, the Capital City
Four Wheel Drive club will host its 29th Annual Surf Fishing
Tournament. The Tournament has been conducted over
the third weekend in October since the beginning. It has
become an eagerly awaited and well-attended event, which
takes place on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. For 24
hours anglers will have the opportunity to drive in the sand,
fish in the ocean or the sound, and hope to land the ‘big
one’. And, the ‘big one’ can pay off in 7 different categories
of fish – both first and second place prize money for all 7.
Tournament prize money totals $1,575. In addition, there
are many door prizes given away on both Saturday - to kick
off the Tournament and on Sunday - when fish are
weighed, registered and prizes are awarded.
Last year 437 Anglers participated, along with a number of
children (under 12) who fish the ‘Children’s Tournament”.
In the interest of promoting fishing in the younger
generations, the club encourage this by having 1st and 2nd
place prizes, which along with a trophy include a few
dollars, a rod & reel, and a tackle box with some starter
tackle.
Every year a significant portion of the proceeds from the
Tournament go to benefit numerous charitable
organizations and service projects on Hatteras Island. The
club also supports many charities, service organizations,

and Four Wheel Drive organizations back home in the
Richmond area by making donations and supporting
several events and fundraisers.

UFWDA 2014 Annual Meeting Report
Sandy Schneirla (Delegate for VA4WDA)
United Four Wheel Drive Annual General Meeting took
place on June 24, 2014. We started at 8:43 pm via
webinar/ conference call. President Jim Mazolla is standing
down for job related issues. United’s program of offering
event insurance to clubs is still on hold while an underwriter
is being found. Last year’s expenses exceed income by
$3,057. Delegate reports were given by CO4WDA,
VA4WDA, SFWDA, and Carolina Trailblazers. Chris Bowe
won Four Wheeler of the Year. Jeff Bates won
Environmentalist of the Year. Discussions have been
begun with Blue Ribbon Coalition about teaming up to
expand the geographic footprint of followers reached. 2016
will be UFWDA’s 40th anniversary and VA4WDA has
offered to host the annual meeting here in VA. Current
positions available with UFWDA are: president, treasurer,
and director of membership. If you are interested please
contact the UFWDA BOD.
The 2014 Annual Float Trip on the James was
a big success. Over sixty anglers registered for the
tournament. Aside from raising over $200 for the
Association, the weather was perfect and fish were
weighed in for all categories except Trashfish. There were
a few incidents where participants went overboard against
their will, but no one got hurt.
Thanks to Capital City for making the float a success with
their donation of many door prizes. Additional thanks to
Dennis Conroy for door prizes and equipment coordination,
Danny Purgason of Purgason Landscaping for door prizes,
Herb Purgason (Capital City Fourwheelers) for door prizes,
and Dave Wilberger of Promotional Considerations for
doing the shirts at a very good price.
