MANY adventures await you!! VA4WDA Summer 2016 Edition April Trail Cleanup at Bald Mountain in the George Washington National Forest. Sign installation complete! The Official Publication of the Virginia Four Wheel Drive Association Summer 2016 Virginia Four Wheel Drive Association P.O. Box 6612 Virginia Beach, VA 23456 Letter from Jesse L Schneirla, VA4WDA President VA4WDA Members, It was great seeing so many of you at our Annual Meeting held at Starr Motors again this year. I hope you learned what the Association is doing for you to help keep public land open for the sport we love. I also want to thank Sandy Schneirla and Joe Bonney for putting this together again this year. And not to forget the White family for inviting us out again this year to use their property to wheel on for the day and then have lunch and our meeting. This year we voted for four positions on the VA4WDA BOD. I would like to congratulate the following people for winning the positions: President: Jesse L Schneirla (4th term) Members at Large: John Nachman (3rd term) Brad Boyd (2nd term) Laura Stone (1st term) We also held our spring George Washington National Forest clean-up in April and had a great turn out. Please read the article in this newsletter for more. We are planning to do it again in October. We have also been invited to propose some “challenge areas” off of the Big Levels or Bald Mountain Jeep Trail. VA4WDA will be scouting this trail in the near future to submit ideas to the District Ranger to make this possible. We will be putting out more information on this in the future as we will need people, power, and machinery to make this happen with the NFS. Also look at our calendar as the wheeling season is now upon us and our Business Members are sponsoring or holding great events in the near future. Make sure to plan to make it to one or all of them! See you on the trails, Jesse Virginia Four Wheel Drive Association Letter from Sandy Schneirla, VA4WDA Vice President We held our spring trail clean up at Bald Mountain Jeep Trail on April 16. We had 43 people attend and work for the day. Camping was at the William Branch Day Use area in Sherando Lake Campground. The NFS was kind enough to secure this area for us to sse the entire weekend. Rangers Whitmore and Wheeler had plenty to keep us busy. The rest of the signs were installed by the “sign crew”. Dozens of bags of trash were hauled away. Thanks Catfish for running the trail with your trailer and collecting those for us. Limbing and brushing made the narrow trail a little easier to concur without huge scratches. And we installed the 2nd kiosk. Thanks to EVERYONE that came out to support our cause. Ranger Whitmore explained to us that for each person that volunteered, the park service get $20 per hour. So $20 per hour x 43 people x 8 hours = $6,880.00 worth of matching grant money they receive. Money we can use to make the trail even better. Dinner was prepared Saturday night for all that helped. Then we all sat by the fireplace and socialized into the morning. We had a great time. In October, we plan to take one more trip to Bald Mountain to hopefully do some more labor intensive work. The NFS has asked the VA4WDA BOD to propose some areas of challenge for the trail and perhaps opening up some areas on the trail that are now closed. We will have a scouting mission during the summer and present a proposal. Please start thinking now about anyone one you know that could give us access to hauling and large equipment to use on the trail. Watch our website and Facebook page for more info. P.O. Box 6612 Virginia Beach, VA 23456 Pre-Register your Jeep www.JeepJamVA.com JeepJAM is June 4th, 2016 . Virginia Four Wheel Drive Association P.O. Box 6612 Virginia Beach, VA 23456 Letter from Rob Matzell, Matzell Motorsports For those who do not know King of the Hammers or KOH, has just celebrated its 10th year anniversary. This was my 7th trip out to the event and the 4th year racing. This proved to be the best year yet. The cars that race this race come in all shapes and sizes. From the King of the Moto's motorcycle race, to the UTV race, to the 4600 class stock cars, the 4500 class modified cars, the 4800 class legends cars, all the way to the 4400 class unlimited cars, their is a class for most everyone. As we heading into pit 2A, we knew there was only one more hard rock trail to go. We splashed fuel, grabbed some food, stretched and then headed into Aftershock to finish the race. We had been in the car for almost 8 hours at this point and the sun was getting lower. We made short work of Aftershock and then took off the last 20 miles to the finish. It was great to see the volunteers and fans cheer us by after such a long day. I think I may have driven the slowest the last mile or so as we came into the finish, Not wanting to make a mistake with the end in sight it was great to see Hammertown again! We made our way down the last hill and took the checkered flag. After 4 tries I was elated to finish. After just under 9 hours and 115 miles and some of the hardest trails on the planet we finished this great race. Officially we came in 11th in class and 27th overall out of over 100 cars. With out the support from my team, friends, sponsors I could not have competed such a great task. I would like to thank the VA4WDA for their support of my race efforts and am proud to be a part of such a great organization. This year the course was designed to spread out the cars over the first 71 miles of a mix of high speed desert and twisty trails before heading into the tight rock trails of the famous Hammer trails. We had set a goal of keeping a good pace and finishing. We had to change a tire around mile 41 but had a pretty uneventful first 71 miles. We stopped at pit 2 to top off with fuel before heading into the "rocks". We traversed trails like Boulder Dash, Upper Big Johnson, Claw Hammer, Chocolate Thunder, and even Jack Hammer. We had to winch a few times but we where able to crawl most of the trails. Cars where spread out all over the place, rolled over, broken, as we made our way through. Most that passed us in the desert where now stopped as we went by. We had another section of desert before heading into the last of the rock trails, Highway 19/20, and Sunbonnet. Land Use Update Sandy Schneirla, VP Ocean overwash is problem for ORVs heading to Cape Point: The NCDEQ ( N.C. Division of Environmental Quality ) has said the NPS cannot drain the flooded area without a elevation survey and other measures that have thrown cold water on the process to improve Beach Access to these areas by Ramps (Cape Point) 44 and Ramp 48 (connects Cape Point Camp to Frisco) and (Frisco) Ramp 49. This news is from John Couch, OBPA. North Shen Mtn Update and First Public Field Trip: The Forest Service has scheduled the first public field trip for Wed. May 25! It will be from approximately 9 am – 3 pm and will be in the Camp Run, Rough Run and German River area. They do not have specific stops scheduled yet. Open Position in VA4WDA We are looking for someone to take on the Newsletter Editor position. If you have a knack to design and produce newsletter media and more, we need you. Box 6612 Virginia Beach, VA 23456 A Word from Middle Peninsula Jeep Association: by Tabatha Koberstein This is an exciting year for Middle Peninsula Jeep Association Inc.! We are planning a first ever MPJAI’s JEEP Festival whose goal is to provide a fun-filled day of competition and showmanship while bringing awareness and attention of the offroading community to the general public. The Jeep Festival will have food vendors, sponsors, games, competitions, and a Jeep Show. This event is planned for this fall. The date and time will be announced after confirmation of our location and planning is complete. We honored many MPJAI members this March for the great volunteering efforts and end of the year awards. Awards went to Karin Sikes for Jeep of the Year, Tim Radtke for Most Damaged, and Heather Shook for Jeeper of the Year. Our Presidential Awards went to Charles “Catfish” Woods, Terry Hagland, Gary Hays, and Paula & Warren Dixon. Pomoco Jeep on Jefferson Avenue is our home for MPJAI meetings. We were honored when Dave Lawson allowed us to move our trophy case from the employee lounge to the main show room. With this event Tabatha Koberstein was inspired and Virginia Four Wheel Drive Association thought of the idea of our club newsletter. With overwhelming support from the Board of Directors and the club’s members she became our editor to our first ever newsletter. We held our Annual Easter Egg Hunt at Newport News Park, which our young “Jeepers” loved. The little smiles on their faces was truly worth the effort. This year MPJAI will also be a sponsor to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. This event will raise awareness and will help spread the concern of this deathly disease. Also, we appreciate their dedication to keep America moving. Members are forming groups to provide medical assistance on trails if needed, safety is a number one concern, having these groups of people could prove to be invaluable. Some upcoming events which MPJAI is working on is VA4WD Annual Members Only Trail ride, MPJAI Annual Picnic, Halloween Camp out, Thanksgiving Day feed the trucker event, EDMARC Hospice for Children food drive and much more! Please feel free to stop by at any of our weekly coffee run at Dunkin Donuts on Jefferson Ave in Newport News to share some Jeep talk! P.O.
