Climate and environment
Poland has access to the Baltic sea - from the north, the south is limited by a mountain
ranges, with the highest - the Tatra Mountains (highest peak - Cracks (Rysy)
2499m.a.s.l.). In the north-eastern part is an extensive area covered with numerous
lakes of the Mazury Lake District with the largest lake Maui (Śniardwy) with an area of
113.84 km square and a depth of 23.3 m.
Poland has a continental climate, with moderate to variable weather: cold, overcast,
quite severe winters with frequent precipitation and mild summers with frequent
showers and thunderstorms. In summer the average temperature is from 17 ° C on the
coast to 19.3 ° C in the south, summer temperatures in recent years were to 30° C, and
in winter comes to - 30 ° C.

BYDGOSZCZ
Bydgoszcz (Latin: Bidgostia, German: Bromberg) - a town in northern Poland, situated
on the historical Kujawy over Brda River and the Bydgoszcz Canal, which borders the
eastern part of the Vistula River (largest river in Poland), seat of Kujawy-Pomeranian
Voivodeship Office and the Governor of Kujawy- Pomeranian.
Bydgoszcz is one of the largest cities in Poland (8th by population - 357 650
inhabitants; 10th by area - 175.98 km square). Represents a major economic, cultural,
academic, medical, military and sports center. Is a hub for road, rail and inland
waterway transport in the country, has an international airport and river port. In
Bydgoszcz Waterways combine two international waterways, stringing basin of
Western Europe and Eastern Europe.

Bydgoszcz is a major cultural center in the country, especially musical. Traditions of
the municipal theater dates back to the seventeenth century, when a Jesuit college
built a theater. The first music school was established in Bydgoszcz in 1904, and there
was here well known in Europe and in the world a piano factory of Bruno Sommerfeld.
Culture in Bydgoszcz is supported by the Society For the City of Bydgoszcz,
Pomeranian Philharmonic, Opera Nova, music clubs, the Polish Theatre name of
Jerome Konieczka and private theaters: "Obok", "Yakiza" also for many museums art
galleries and cinemas.
The Poles are a brave nation, which at the moment of threat is able to muster the
courage and heroism. They are faithful to their homeland and if something threatens it,
they can even forget about their own beliefs and unite to fight. History of annexation
has taught Polish people of humility, but also a sense of patriotism. Poles have also
such good qualities as thrift. They can live in harmony with nature, which gives them
so much in return. Their homes are always open to visitors, according to proverbs, "A
guest in the house - God in the house". Nearly all Polish knights complied with the
Code of knights, most important to them was, "God, Honor, The Country.”
A few tips:
v Poles hospitality is so great that they do not accept the refuse offering something ...
Even when the guy says "no" in a moments he can expect renewed questions
kind .. But maybe you want something?
v In some countries, when you meet with your friends you ask "how are you?" and
generally receive a response "thank you, well ...". Not in Poland, here you will
receive a full reply with a very wide scale. :) Please be patient, listen and share
your own thoughts.
v Complaining and revealing something less positive can be a good opportunity to
give advice to another person - and the Poles love to give advice : D
v In Poland special respect enjoy Name day. As you can see the flowers or cake, be
very nice and sociable. Stop for a moment, find out whose Name day is, make a
wish ("All best” is enough at the beginning).

3. PRACTICALLY...
C) AXA INSURANCE
A) DOCUMENTS
EU citizens (since May 2004) do not need a visa or a passport to enter Poland. Simply
ID card. In another case, a visa and passport are required. If you came from a country
outside the EU, check out the Polish consulate in your country, what documents are
required. With all matters which are needed to be arrange relating to arrival sending
organization will help. Arriving in Polish prepare 6 documentary photographs.
B) CHECK-IN (ACCOMMODATION)
While your volunteering in Bydgoszcz, you will live in the dormitory:

AXA Insurance usually prepares the sending organization. You will receives before
leaving AXA card with your name which you must carry with you. It is valid for time of
volunteering plus 2 months. EVS insurance plan covers the following areas of
insurance: the cost of health care, assistance in returning home; providance permanent disability and life insurance, non-professional liability.
You have the freedom of choice of doctor and hospital. You can use the services of
private and public sector.
Refunds subject to: hospitalization, outpatient services, dental care, ophthalmic,
Pharmaceuticals in 100% of the cost. It is recommended to collect all documents and
invoices (medicines must be purchased on the invoice) and at the end of volunteering
to submit with the application for a refund. With which will help you co-oridnator of the
project.
D) EMBASY AND CONSULATE
If for any reason you need to contact the embassy or consulate, you'll find their
addresses and phone numbers on the website of Polish phone books: www.pkt.pl or
on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs www.msz.gov.pl. If you have lost your
passport or visa, your embassy/consulate can provide you with temporary documents
or at least document that will allow you to return to the country.

Volunteers in the "Windmill" Foundation gets 370 PLN per month for meals and
celaning. The dormitory has a kitchen and refrigerator, from which you can use.
Volunteers prepare their own meals, and they buys the products for it. It is important
that with every purchase to ask for an invoice. To do this you need to provide details
information for to the shop:

All invoices must be gethered and at the end of the month brought to the project
coordinator. It is important to spend as close to the amount of 370 PLN. And do not
buy alcohol, tobacco or drugs on invoice.
In addition, each volunteer receives pocket money, which does not have to be
documented with invoices. You will have to come to the project coordinator at pointed
deadline and you will sign the card issuing pocket money and get money. The amount
of the pocket money for volunteers residing in Poland is 85 euros.

You can get there from the main train station by bus No. 94; from the main bus station
by tram No. 3 and transfer at the bus No. 72 or 70 on the loop interchange.
Shortly after arriving in Poland you need to register. With that will help you your
personal mentor. Prepare 2 photos (from imported pool of photos) and the completed
form. After check-in in dormitory you will receive a small piece of paper. It is very
important and necessary to register your stay. Shortly after its receipt, pass it to your
mentor or directly to the project coordinator at the "Windmill" Foundation .
Then register your stay. With that will help you co-ordinator or mentor. Prepare the
completed application form, ID card or passport, insurance (AXA), all of that and

F) TRANSPORT
In Poland, the main transport is by rail and bus. For timetables and connections,
please visit www.pkp.pl for rail and www.pks.bydgoszcz.pl for bus. On those pages
you can also check the ticket price. Tickets are purchased over the main station, in
exceptional cases can be purchased at the conductor.
In Bydgoszcz the main means of transport are buses, trams and taxis, although the
last ones are expensive. In Bydgoszcz the ticket price for bus and tram is 2.60 PLN
(normal daily ticket, for which you'll be driving). Price of tickets for night buses (with the
letter N) is dual.
In Bydgoszcz season tickets are valid - 2-weekly, monthly, per line, or on the network.
As a volunteer you will receive a monthly ticket (to form you’ll need another picture) for
one line, or combine line A+T. For timetable of buses in Bydgoszcz, please visit
www.mzk.bydgoszcz.pl.
Bydgoszcz has also a system of A + T, a combination of bus and tram lines in selected
areas, for which valid one ticket. Such a system is valid in combination: 72A+3T;
70A+3T, 73A+6T, 74A+3T, 65A+3T and 71A+3T. On the following pages are

During your volunteer in Poland it is better to use a local mobile and form your own
card. Simply purchase an activation card available at the kiosk (special small shops
near bus stops). You will then receive a new number, which will now allow you to

As writen in the section on food. Each volunteer will receive a pocket money and
money for food and cleaning.
In every major store and most smaller ones, you can pay for purchases by credit card.
Also no problem to find any ATM to withdraw money.
If you had to exchange currency, you can do it at any bank or a larger hotel, but most
likely you will be saddled with an extra charge. The best way is to do it in currency
exchange, which rarely gets a commission.

As The Windmill” Foundation volunteer works for 5 days week (from Monday to
Friday). Also you have free weekends. In addition, you are entitled to two days in the
month free. Sometimes you will have to work over the weekend, in which case you will
receive an extra day off.
Any volunteer working at the "Windmill" Foundation is involved in events organized by
the Foundation, helps, and promotes also EVS. Often, along with all the volunteers,
organize meetings for children, adolescents and adults when you can promote EVS,
as well as your country. Also, if you want to come to us, think about how you can
provide us with your country, your culture. Maybe you can bring specific music or
recipes.

1) The Windmill” Foundation (2010-PL-56)
This work will be to help people with disabilities. The tasks of the volunteer will include:
- helping in therapy, education, rehabilitation activities;
- taking care of the disabled;
- organizing of leisure activities (meetings, themed events, etc.);
- teaching of daily activities and cultural behavior of people with disabilities;
- presentating of different cultures, traditions, arts and customs;
- helping in organizing and carrying out share resorts for people with disabilities
(vacations, tours, therapy);
- helping with some office work (such as faxing, copying documents, sending
correspondence).

2) Catholic Culture Centre Windmill " (2010-PL-59)
The tasks of the volunteer will include:
- preparating of workshops for children;
- assisting in the conduct of activities for children and youth;
- assisting in the preparation of various family gatherings;
- preparating of coverage of events on the website and on bulletin boards;
- helping with some office work.
As a volunteer you will be assigned a mentor - usually it is a Pole, who will help you
adapt on the spot. In addition, you will receive a teacher of Polish language, which
whom you will have a lessons 1.5 hours per week.
Every employee and European volunteer has the right to use non-charge one of
classes offered at the Windmill. The "Windmill” Foundation runs various activities
including: theater, music (learning to play guitar, organ), pop-gospel group, dance,

J) VOLUNTEERI IN Windmill”
Each European volunteer (long term) is sent on two training courses during of his
volunteer work. This is on-arrival training at the start of your volunteering and midtermtraining which takes place more or less in the middle of your stay in Poland.
Volunteers staying in the volunteer up to 4 months they have only one training at the
beginning of their stay abroad.
The principle of "Windmill" is that each volunteer writes monthly report on his/her
activities. It will help you later writing Youthpass - a document describing your
volunteer work, and which you can attach your CV.
