A new and
improved
guide
W
e have published the Annual Manual for eight
years now as a comprehensive guide of things to
do in central Iowa. We provide this information to
you as an aid in your search for entertainment, dining, nightlife,
sports and outdoor recreation opportunities in the metro. Inside
you will find extensive listings on events, restaurants and bars
and this year we even added some maps to help you find your
way around.
The Annual Manual is available at more than 80 hotels in the
metro and about another 80 high-traffic locations. It will be redistributed throughout the year to ensure that copies remain
available. In years past, the Annual Manual has also been used
to accommodate guests at weddings, attendees at conventions,
college students and even those attending high school reunions.
It has also been a helpful tool for newcomers to the area, too. And
to make it even better, we have created a searchable database
of this information online as well at www.annualmanualdm.com.

owa’s temperate climate allows us the privilege of experiencing all four seasons, each
offering plenty of different activities. The cold and snowy weather of winter might keep
some people hibernating the days away, but Iowans embrace it as an opportunity for
exploring the great outdoors during a time when you can see the forest through the
trees, literally. Adventurers don’t have to look far for places prime for sledding, skiing,
snowboarding and more. And as the weather heats up, the activities do, too. For residents
of a landlocked state, Iowans know how to make the most out of water activities,
especially considering our lakes and rivers freeze over for a good portion of the year.
Central Iowa is home to several lakes that are perfect for fishing, boating and swimming
with clean beaches for soaking up some sun and kicking off the flip-flops for a game of
Frisbee or volleyball. For the thrill seekers, Iowa offers amusement parks, hot air balloon
rides and — to really get the blood pumping — a popular local sky diving scene.

T
o the uninformed, a visitor to Iowa might sell the state a tad short: all flat land and
farm animals, he or she might say. But Iowa is home to culture-enriched events that
draw folks from coast to coast. World-class athletes flock to the state every year to
be a part the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI), the Drake Relays and
the Hy-Vee Triathlon. RAGBRAI is a bike ride like no other at which even Lance Armstrong
has been known to make a blurred appearance. The famous Drake Relays and the Hy-Vee
Triathlon each offer spectators a chance to see Olympians compete along with the nation’s
top athletes. Aside from the big events, Iowa has casual offerings as well, with more disc
golf courses than any other state, rolling golf courses and a native prairie grass countryside
made to be seen while climbing, canoeing, rafting and more. Don’t miss out!

owa is soaked in history and heritage, especially in the Greater Des Moines Area. The city
is home to a proud and cultured population with a thriving metropolis that offers both
big-city luxuries and small-town charm. Downtown Des Moines is a mix of historic brick

geniuses like Gordon Bunshaft make the area a hidden gem. The Des Moines Art Center, for

plethora of entertainment options, one can catch a musical or play featuring national
touring acts or local talents yet to be discovered at one of Des Moines’ many theatres.
Looking for live music? Central Iowa has recently seen an influx of great acts that continues
to grow. Everyone from pop stars and legends to up-and-coming indie artists pass through
almost every week. In the warmer months, the Downtown Des Moines Farmers’ Market is a
legendary choice for a truly organic — truly Iowa — experience. Every Saturday morning, the
historic Court Avenue District shuts down to make way for local food and goods to fill the street,
stretching six blocks. For the ultimate in people-watching, nothing compares to the Iowa State
Fair. The list of concerts, rides, attractions, corndogs, vendors and more make it impossible to do
it all in one day. That’s why there’s a campground. The food alone is a reason to go. Where else
can you snack on a deep-fat-fried Twinkie on a stick in public without being judged?
