Something To Think About …
A man was driving his car when he
saw an old lady stranded on the side of the road. He saw that she needed
help and so he stopped his old Holden near her Mercedes and got out.
5 STAR FAMILIES
He smiled as he was approaching her but she was still worried. Nobody
had stopped for hours and now the man coming towards her did not look
safe - his appearance was so poor and shabby. He could see how
frightened she was and so tried to calm her: “I‘m here to help you, don‘t
worry. My name is Warren Giles.”
Her tire was flat and so he got to work changing it, getting quite dirty in the
process. When the job was done she asked how much she owed him for
his help. Warren smiled and said, “If you really want to pay me back the next
time you see someone who needs help give that person the assistance they
need and think of me.”
That same evening the lady stopped at small café
and was served by a waitress who looked about eight
months pregnant. The waitress had a sweet smile
and was very friendly, although she was obviously
tired and had spent the whole day on her feet. The
lady wondered how someone, who obviously had so
little, could be so kind and give service beyond what
was expected to a complete strange, and then she
remembered Warren.
The lady finished her meal and paid with a one hundred dollar note. The
waitress went to get change and when she came back the lady was gone.
She left a note on the serviette, ‘You don‘t own me anything. Today
someone helped me, just like now I‘m helping you. If you really want to pay
me back do not let this chain of love end with you.’ The waitress found four
more one hundred dollar notes under the napkin.
That night the waitress finished her shift earlier. As she travelled home she
was thinking about the lady and all the money she had left. She was
wondering how the lady had known how much she and her husband needed
it, especially now, with the baby arriving soon? She knew her husband
worried about this and so she was glad to tell him the good news. Then she
kissed him and whispered “Everything’s going to be all right. I love you
Mr Giles.” “And I love you too, Mrs Giles,”
Warren replied.

PARISH HANDBOOK
From the Editor
Patience
is one of the "Fruits of the Spirit' which Christians are
encouraged to nurture. So many things seem to test our patience.
Recently I needed to make an appointment at the Super Clinic. I rang and
left a message on their answer phone with necessary information for them
to ring me back. The letter I had received said they would contact me
within 24 hours. After two days I rang again. After another week of phone
calls which a real person didn't answer I gave up. I then received a
message that Kevan had been discharged back to his own doctor. This got
a response from the Medical Centre. When I explained my lack of response
from the Cardiology Department they offered to ring for me. Several hours
later the Cardiology folk rang to give an appointment time. During this time
my patience ran really thin. I had to remind myself that God was in charge.
Want to find out more about
what this Parish does?
Find out all the details in the
Parish Handbook, now
available in the church foyers.
Patience is nurtured when we constantly remember that God is in control
and we do not need to fret about our circumstances. When we display the
fruit of Patience we are saying that we trust in God and know that His
timing is just right. When we become impatient and allow our blood
pressure to rise and feelings of irritation to grow we are really saying that
we think God has got his plan all wrong. When we pray the Lord's Prayer
we say "Your will be done" but so often we act as though it is our will that
should be done.
It is always easy in hindsight to see how good God's timing is but we
are not good at believing it when we don't get what we want
immediately.
Maybe we need to practise patience a lot more often when those
everyday niggles and frustrations arise.
God Bless You All and grant you the fruit of Patience.

church foyers, the

“Biblebangers”
I have spent the last 6 months with the St. Andrews Men’s Group
sharing my understanding and belief in Jesus Christ and my Christian faith.
We have used the Promise Keepers topics during this time to discuss how
our faith impacts our families, our church friends, and ourselves. We have
learned that forgiveness and love are the core values taught by Christ and
carried on by Paul, to spread the wonderful religion that is Christianity.
We have found that our weekly meetings have transformed us from
reluctant partners in church activities into thoughtful men who are able to
talk to one another and share some very personal stories about ourselves,
our lives and our Christian belief. So, what is next?
We have begun to talk about ways of sharing our new found enthusiasm for
the Christian life style.
We have asked, “ how do we share the good feeling?”
“Well, lets talk about it with our friends and neighbours", said someone
recently.
The immediate response was, ”but that will turn us into Biblebangers”
We immediately pictured the young men on bicycles pedaling through our
neighborhood, with their white shirts and black ties, sharing a pamphlet,
door to door and trying to convince us of their particular way of worshipping
God. We all admitted that’s a little extreme. But what can we do to share
our good feelings about being Christian?
Promise Keepers tells us that:
95% of Christians have never won a soul to Christ.
80% of all Christians do not consistently witness for Christ
Less than 2% are involved in the ministry of evangelism.
Well, folks, we have not found the answer yet. We plan on putting on a
men’s breakfast in the future, but you won’t see us on the corner of Queen
and Bowen Streets handing out St Andrews Brochures.
Stay tuned for further developments,
Jim Reardon
Our
meeting this month was rather different to usual. It was
good to have some visitors with us and they were in for a treat. Kathy
Miller was our guest speaker and she brought with her a wonderful
PowerPoint presentation of her journey into the foothills of the
Himalayas. She and the other women with her took nine brand new sewing
machines to a remote village. They also took many yards of sweat shirting
and all the threads, needles, scissors, and tape measures etc. necessary
for the making of sweat pants and beanies. Their aim was to teach a group
of village women and teenage girls to sew. All the luggage was transported
by Sherpa's and the women had to trek many kilometres into the mountains
to reach the isolated village. When they left they gifted the sewing
equipment to the village women and also $3,000 for them to build a kitchen
onto the women's hall where they met.
Kathy's very comprehensive photographic record of her time away
allowed us to journey with her and enjoy the experiences which she had
shared with her fellow travellers. We marvelled at her stamina and
enthusiasm for the project. Well done Kathy!
President Barbara Lawrence thanked Kathy and Dot Bettison presented
her with a cake. We presented Eunice Bellis and Mary Richardson with

Out and About
We are glad to hear that Pat Thomson and Connie Hendrie
are progressing with their recovery after time in Middlemore
Hospital. We also remember Betty Sharps and Joan Watson
still in Middlemore Hospital. We are sorry to hear of the
death of Lynne Ferguson’s aunt. Our prayers remain with
them all. There are a lot of colds and winter ailments about at this time of
the year so to all those who have been laid low we hope you will be better
soon.
Anne and Bill Smillie have a new (and first) grandson.
Congratulations.
All-age worship can often be a one-way
flow, because as adults we assume we
have the answers and children need to
learn from us. Messy Church turns that
on its head by encouraging children’s
spirituality. It is an enriching experience
to learn from children and allow
opportunities for them to minister. What
Messy Church seeks to ‘be’ and ‘do’
springs from a desire to encourage faith
development across the generations,
where all can encounter God, in a
relaxed atmosphere.
Our Next Messy Church
will be in the fourth term
on a Sunday afternoon,
from 3.30 to 5.30pm
All will be welcome to join us for a

People with organisational skills are very precious. We are
fortunate to have several who will accept the challenge that major
programmes bring. This month it is ‘For the Love of Chocolate' afternoon
teas. This has been the inspiration of the Mission and Outreach committee
which has some wonderfully talented and enthusiastic members and each
year comes up with a delightful way to raise funds for the Nepal Mission.
Well done Sharon Levestone, Margaret Jacob, Gaylyn Wills, Anne Smillie,

Messy Church
Is it an expression of church that connects for the 21
Century or little more than fun, glue and glitter?
st
Written by Rev’d Debbie Smith,
St Aiden’s Remuera
I often hear people talking about the
decline in church attendance and the
urgent need to do something, but what?
It’s vital that we embrace the difficult
questions, yet it’s easy to become
discouraged. We need to face up to the
reality that the way we currently do
things at church by and large doesn’t
connect with younger generations and
respond creatively to the challenge. Broad
statements and pipe dreams won’t get us
very far. Wishful thinking isn’t vision. We
need to look at how we operate.
culture is a challenge. We need to
sharpen our thinking about mission
and be more adventurous; ready to
take risks. It takes courage to step out
and embrace new ways of doing
things.
It’s important that we honour and respect
traditional forms of worship. However in
connecting with younger generations we
need to consider new ways of doing
things, not merely for the sake of it, but in
order to connect. The choice isn’t either
new forms of worship or staying with
what is familiar, effective mission involves
embracing both.
Messy Church is much more than fun,
glue and glitter. It involves people of
all ages in a relaxed setting, learning
about the good news of Jesus. It isn’t a
stepping stone into traditional church
as we know it; rather it is church in its
own right; meeting around the risen
Lord. Messy Church considers the
needs, learning style, temperament
and spirituality of everyone, including
the youngest. Jesus is introduced
through stories, prayer, worship,
creativity, friendship and hospitality.
Through my work experience I recognise
that people are more open to God than
perhaps we realise, they’re open
spiritually, searching for the meaning of
life. However, when it comes to church
they are more hesitant. For many, church
doesn’t connect. Yet, the good news of
the Gospel is as relevant as ever. Jesus
left us with one command - go and make
disciples.
Messy Church enables you to make a
start. It builds confidence and helps to
renew vision and energy for mission. It
is not a ‘how to’ programme, or the
latest trend. It begins with invitation
and necessitates listening to the needs
of others to develop Messy Church
relevant to the context.

Awhitu Life Group—Bible Study
1.30pm Wednesdays, from 16 July
at Viv Naylor’s home, 30 Hudson Road, ph 235 1442.
An opportunity to discuss insights from the Bible, fellowship with others,
and enjoy yummy afternoon teas.
The study will be based on the book
‘We Make the Road by Walking:
A Quest for Spiritual Formation, Reorientation and Activation’
by Brian McLaren, an author, speaker, activist and public theologian.
In the introduction to this study book Brian McLaren writes:
You are not finished yet. You are “in the making.” You have the capacity to
learn, mature, think, change and grow. You also have the freedom to stagnate,
regress, constrict, and lose your way. Which road will you take?
All are welcome to join this group, lead by Dale Peach.
As each week will be a separate study it won’t matter if you can’t come
every week … but I’m sure you’d like to come for the fellowship alone!
All Welcome (including the men!).
This will also be an opportunity to spend a short time
in prayer for the Awhitu Peninsula.
To engage actively with different ways of
doing church to serve our changing

Nepal Mission Trip 2014
June proved to be a very busy month for
everyone involved in the fundraising for the
Nepal trip. Thank you to everyone who was
involved behind the scenes to make it all
happen and especially to those who gave up
their time to help us out once again.
June saw us pull in some significant funds with
the Toddler Market Day and the Grand Lions
Dinner being the two main events. We had
rave reviews from the Lions Club, so much so
that we have been invited back to do it all over
again in the coming months. Due to our busy
schedule we have had to limit ourselves to one
more dinner which we will look forward to
catering for in August.
The Nepal missions trip team have had a trip
to the travel doctor to have their injections. I
have heard of dizzy boys and very sore arms,
just part of the price to pay for a wonderful
experience in Nepal.
"For the Love of Chocolate" will be the main fundraiser that we are focusing
on in July, and after the dinner in August we will wind down the fundraising
activities with just a few smaller initiatives on the horizon to help us reach
our goal.
Please keep Joe Martin, Neil Wanhill, Orlando Kovati, Elliot Stainton and
Sebastian Stainton in your prayers as they prepare for this life-changing trip.
We look forward to reporting back at the end of August with a positive
result from our fundraising efforts. Thanks again for all your support.

Sistas Conference
TOOLBOX
This year we are looking to organize a group of "sistas" to attend this
conference. It is a fantastic weekend of worship, word from fantastic
international speakers and just a lot of God-filled fun for women of all ages,
a weekend not to be missed! If you are interested in finding out more about
this conference then feel free to contact Suit-Keen Kovati for a brochure or
to find out more details about the event.
Toolbox is an initiative of Ian and Mary Grant and The
Parenting Place in Green Lane. It is a wonderful tool for
parents to get some ideas of ways to enjoy parenting without
the continual pressures of the world in 2014.
I will be facilitating a group at the Patumahoe School
www.patumahoe.school.nz for the parents of the 6-12 year olds
during the 3rd term. Dates to be confirmed.
Email: [email protected] or Ph.: 2353476
It is aimed at good parents just wanting to become better parents
as well as those who require a little more help.
We have lots of fun and lots of laughs.

Kindling. As my stocks of firewood for kindling are fast diminishing, I
may not have sufficient to supply kindling until the end of the winter
season. I apologise for this, and thank those kind people who have
supported this. However, a limited supply of pinecones
are now being sold as well.
