As you read these lines, we have probably already unveiled our commemorative plaque honouring Mr. Paul Gérin-Lajoie, an emblematic
figure in the education reform of the 1960s. The municipal council
wished to pay tribute to this great man as part of the 50th anniversary of the Cité-des-Jeunes campus by renaming former De la Paix
Park in his honour. This is a wonderful way for our young people—
frequent visitors to this park facing the school’s campus—to learn
more about the very central role this visionary played in our region,
and in Quebec overall. The 50th anniversary of the Cité-des-Jeunes
campus brings back countless memories for many of us. I, in fact,
was among the first students to walk the halls of this school, and
spent many wonderful years there.
Thinking back to my own school years leads me to reflect on the
importance of schools and the critical role that teachers play. I would
therefore like to take this opportunity to thank all of our amazing educators for their dedication. Along with many of you, I also attended
several of the shows offered as part of Festi-Cirque, including the
amazing performance by École du Papillon-Bleu. The hard work and
passion of the teachers here allowed these young people to be part
of an extraordinarily unique experience. I would also like to congratulate Sébastien Demers, who received the Order of Merit from the
Fédération des commissions scolaires du Québec. Mr. Demers is
one of the driving forces behind Festi-Cirque and the Vaudreuil-Soulanges circus school. You can see Sébastien Demers’ students in
action during the Festival international de cirque Vaudreuil-Dorion
from June 23 to 26, 2016. This 12th edition promises to be action
packed and reinforces the important role that the circus plays in our
city, and in our region overall.

TRIBUTE TO PAUL GÉRIN-LAJOIE
WHO IS PAUL GÉRIN-LAJOIE?
A great visionary who was named the very first Minister of Education in 1961, Paul Gérin-Lajoie was responsible for the education
reform, forever marking Quebec’s history.
Mr. Gérin-Lajoie was MP for Vaudreuil-Soulanges from 1960 to
1969, Minister of Youth from 1960 to 1964, Minister of Education
from 1964 to 1966 and Vice-President of the Ministerial Council
from 1964 to 1966.
Under his leadership, Québec witnessed the birth of its first comprehensive high school—the Cité-des-Jeunes campus. This avantgarde educational complex aimed to democratize education and
create a closer connection between adults and young people.
As part of the 50thanniversary of Cité-des-Jeunes,
the municipal council of the City of Vaudreuil-Dorion
wished to pay tribute to this great man by re-naming
former De la Paix Park, facing the school’s campus, in
his honour. Mr. Gérin-Lajoie will be on hand for the
official ceremony on May 28.
From 1970 to 1977, Paul Gérin-Lajoie presided over the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). He was also the
Founding President of the Paul Gérin-Lajoie Foundation, created
in 1977. The title of Knight of the Legion of Honour was conferred
upon him on November 20, 2002. And, he was awarded the
Albert Einstein Gold Medal by UNESCO on March 13, 2008.
Paul Gérin-Lajoie lives in Dorion, at 134 Vaudreuil Avenue.

SÉBASTIEN DEMERS
RECOGNIZED
A physical education and health teacher from École du Papillon-Bleu, Sébastien Demers received the Order of Merit from
the Fédération des commissions scolaires du Québec (FCSQ)
in Saint-Hyacinthe on March 30, 2016. This particular award
serves to honour those who have contributed, or continue
to contribute, to the advancement of public education and
whose personal involvement has resulted in a concertation
between schools and different partners in the Montérégie
area.

order to give students the option of discovering these wonderful sports.
Students and parents both attest to how motivating the circus
activities and physical education classes have been. “As a teacher, it’s this kind of encouragement that feeds the soul. Of
course, I can’t do it alone. I have lots of amazing colleagues
who help me with the Festi-Cirque project,” stated Mr. Demers. Mr. Demers also spotlighted the commitment and dedication of Mr. Éric Brisebois, co-recipient of the award.

Mr. Demers was one of the driving forces behind Festi-Cirque,
the first school-based circus festival in Québec. He also
greatly contributed to the creation of the Vaudreuil-Soulanges
circus school, overseen by the Gymini gymnastics club. Over
and above his tremendous work in helping develop circusrelated events and activities in the region, Mr. Demers has
also been greatly involved with the School Board. He has
taken countless new physical education teachers under his
wing and also hosted a volleyball tournament open to all
school board staff members. Mr. Demers is also involved
in organizing regional sports tournaments during ped days.
And, lastly, he initiated the effort to obtain sports equipment
(downhill and cross-country skiing) for the area’s schools in

APPOINTED
DIRECTOR OF SDAT
Last April, Mr. Marc Côté was appointed Director of the Local
Planning and Development Department (SDAT) following Mr.
Michel Vaillancourt’s retirement.
Mr. Côté has been working for the City for 35 years. Until recently, he had worked as Head of the Technical Services Department. Mr. Côté was involved in a variety of key projects:
the construction of the municipal library, impact assessments
and planning for De la Gare Boulevard, Cité-des-Jeunes
Boulevard and André-Chartrand Avenue, the addition of
multiple parks—including the skate park—and several water
game structures, the construction of the Forbes fire station,
revamping of Saint-Charles Avenue and the construction of
two viaducts, planning and implementation of the roundabout as well as the industrial park infrastructures and housing
developments.
“I am incredibly enthusiastic about this promotion. I would like
to thank the members of the Board of Directors and General
Management for entrusting me with a position as strategic as
Head of the Local Planning and Development Department—
a position which presents many challenges. I am happy to
be able to count on the support and incredible abilities of
my team to help successfully carry out our many projects, all
in a spirit of collaboration with our citizens, elected officials,
entrepreneurs and promoters,” mentioned Marc Côté.
Mr. Côté manages a team of approximately twenty employees.
2016 CENSUS
Every five years, Statistics Canada conducts a census—and
the 2016 Census is currently underway. You have recently
received your Census kit in the mail and have the option of
completing the questionnaire online or requesting a paper
version by phone.

The Census provides a statistical portrait by collecting information on every man, woman and child who lives in Canada.
The various levels of government, businesses and different
social service agencies and ethnocultural organizations make
use of the data gathered through the population Census. This
data is used by government program administrators in order
to plan for a range of services such as pensions, healthcare,
employment programs, new schools, public transportation,
hospitals and daycares.
All residents of Canada are legally required to complete the
census questionnaire (short-form or long-form), by virtue of
the Statistics Act.
SUR HARWOOD: THE MRC BEGINS
CONSTRUCTION OF ITS NEW HEAD OFFICE
Construction work has begun on the new head office of the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Municipalité régionale de comté (MRC). Tbe
MRC, the regional municipal court and the Vaudreuil-Soulanges
Centre local de développement are moving together under one
roof in order to create a central service hub on Harwood Boulevard.
The MRC saw the Harwood Boulevard revitalization project as the
perfect opportunity to move to a new location. The MRC’s new
building adheres perfectly to the guiding principles put forth by the
City of Vaudreuil-Dorion as part of this project—including maximizing existing public spaces, adding new green spaces, ensuring
an adequate ratio of parking spaces, greening and tree planting.
The new head office is the result of extensive concerted efforts
driven by a desire to respect the environment, ensure architectural
integration and respect citizens and municipalities’ ability to cover
the cost of the project. This building will be the first to be erected
as part of the Harwood Boulevard revitalization project.

portico acts as a beautiful focal point, with its grey-brown panels
of Potsdam sandstone—a heritage material that has transcended
time and brought to life some of the finest monuments within the
MRC’s territory. Once extracted from quarries in Hudson and
Pointe-des-Cascades, this stone can be found on a good number
of heritage homes as well as many monuments of great importance such as Saint-Michel Church in Vaudreuil-Dorion and the
MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges building on Saint-Charles Avenue.
And, lastly, the eastern section of the new building is a beautiful
blend of wood and glass featuring a modern artistic interpretation
of forest and water landscapes.
Construction work is slated to be completed in December 2016
and the official inauguration of the building is anticipated for January 2017.

Construction season is upon us. Here is an overview of the
different projects currently underway or expected to begin
soon within the Vaudreuil-Dorion territory.
• The filtration plant is now entirely operational and the
new administrative offices are up and running. Equipment
is operated and monitored from the new control room,
and the quality of the water is analyzed using equipment
in the new laboratory.
• At the wastewater treatment facility, implementation work
is progressing well. Equipment is being tested using sanitary water, allowing for the development of bacteria needed to ensure the effectiveness of the biological process
used to remove the pollutant load from the wastewater.
The new sludge dewatering equipment operates in alternation with the existing equipment. The odour treatment
section is almost fully completed and several components
are already in operation. Furthermore, the City has taken
possession of the recently renovated Ouimet station and
the new garage at the wastewater treatment facility.
• A grant request is currently being examined by the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l’Occupation du
territoire du Québec (MAMOT) since almost a year for
construction of a pipeline that would supply facilities in
the Hudson-Acres, Tree Farms and Ritchie sectors with
water produced by the filtration plant. This particular pipeline would allow for effective control over the quality of
drinking water.
• Concerning the drinking water intake line in the Domaine-en-Haut sector, the call for tenders document was
forwarded to the MAMOT in January 2016 for approval.
Once approval is received, the City can begin requesting
proposals in order to select a firm that will prepare a preliminary report outlining potential solutions for this sector. Where wastewater treatment is concerned, a report
was sent to the MAMOT in January 2016 for approval
of the solution proposed by Tetra Tech. Once this stage

is complete, the City can begin soliciting bids to have the
work done. If everything goes as planned, the wastewater
treatment work should be completed before the end of
the year.
The City must still determine where to install a water intake with an underground reservoir in the Montée d’Alstonvale sector. This particular water intake is required as
part of the Fire Safety Cover Plan and will have a capacity
of 10,000 gallons. The chosen location must respect the
following criteria: be in proximity to the fire station on
Séguin Street, be on an easy-to-access street and be in a
central location within the sector. A second water intake
is also expected to be installed at the intersection of Bellerive Street and De Lotbinière Road. Work on these two
water intakes is slated to be completed by the end of
2016.
The City is in the process of approaching the owners of
the Joseph-Carrier industrial park with a new fiscal proposal aimed at rehabilitating the roads in this sector, in
particular those of Joseph-Carrier, Aimé-Vincent, JohnDesjardins and Adrien-Patenaude Streets as well as part
of F.-X.-Tessier and Marie-Curie streets.
The plans and quotations for the infrastructures of the
Ravin Boisé housing development, located near Montée
d’Alstonvale, are close to finalized. The work could likely
begin during the upcoming fall season. The first phase
of this residential development of single-family homes
includes approximately 80 lots.
The City will soon be building the missing portion of the
bike path on Cité-des-Jeunes Boulevard (close to Canadian Tire). Cyclists will also be able to safely access De
la Gare Boulevard from Saint-Charles Avenue, and viceversa. A stop for CIT La Presqu’île public transportation
users will also be installed in this area.
Water and sewer construction work is currently underway
for Phase 14 of 20-30-40 Residential Project, consisting
of approximately 60 lots on Claude-Léveillée Street.
• Infrastructure plans aimed at extending Phil-Goyette
Street, across from the Chartwell retirement residence
project, are finalized. The City is awaiting authorization
from the Ministère du Développement durable, de l’Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques.
• Paving, borders and lighting work will also be completed
in the following areas this summer and fall:
- Marier Avenue
- Des Tilleuls Street
- A section of Sylvain-Lelièvre Street
- Des Aubépines Street
- A section of Claude-Léveillée Street and LoyolaSchmidt Avenue
• A municipal parking lot will be built during the fall behind
the future MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges building, which
will be located at 280 Harwood Boulevard.
• A railway safety study will soon be conducted with regards
the AMT’s railway crossing on Cité-des-Jeunes boulevard
and a potential railway crossing connecting Des Muguets
and Des Asters streets for pedestrians and cyclists.
• A bike path will be erected along White Street to connect
Henry-Ford Street to Jean-Béliveau Street (facing Hymneau-Printemps school).
• Following the completion of some highly successful road
marking tests, the City plans to go forward with the addi-
tion of parking lots and a bike path on De la Fabrique
Avenue, which will also cross Harwood Boulevard. The
plans for the project should be completed this year, while
construction is slated to take place in 2017.
• The Technical Department is currently analyzing the possibility of installing a lighting network on André-Chartrand
Avenue between Dorion-Gardens Park and the Canadian
Pacific railway. There is a likelihood that the project will
be completed before the end of the year.
SHORELINES: YOUR OBLIGATIONS
If you are the owner of a waterfront lot and anticipate doing
work of any kind along the shoreline, you must first contact
the Permit and Inspection Department. Failure to do so many
result in a fine and a requirement to restore the property to
its original state.
The Protection Policy for Lakeshores, Riverbanks, Littoral
Zones and Floodplains, adopted by the Québec Government, provides a framework and minimum protection requirements that municipalities are mandated to include as part
of their by-laws.
As such, according to Article 3.1.1 of Zoning By-law No.
1275, “Anyone wishing to conduct work of any kind that risks
destroying or modifying the plant cover of shorelines, exposing soil or affecting its stability, or conducting work of any
kind that encroaches upon the shoreline, must obtain a permit or certificate of authorization beforehand.”
The Municipal Council is concerned with the poor condition
of Route 342 (Harwood Road). Talks have been underway
with Minister Poëti regarding the possibility of sharing the cost
of this project. Following January’s cabinet shuffle, the Mayor
will now resume discussions with Minister Daoust. The municipal council’s main objective is to avoid placing a tax burden
on its citizens for a road the City inherited against its will. It is
hoped that an agreement can be reached that will be beneficial to both the residents of this particular road as well as the
road’s users..
Some examples of work that affects riverbanks and shorelines:
• Backfilling (stones, sand, earth, etc.)
• Landscaping
• Construction of a platform or stairs
• Cutting down trees or shrubs
• Docks, shelters or ramps on stilts, piles or constructed out
of floating platforms
• Installation of a boat shelter
• Addition of a window
• Addition of a path or stairs leading to the water
• Addition of an opening that provides access to the water
(less than 30% slope)
Looking to spruce up your shoreline?
The City subsidizes 50% of the cost of trees, shrubs and
herbaceous perennial plants (a maximum of $300) intended for the re-vegetation of the shoreline, a maximum
of 5 metres from the top of the bank. Eligibility must be
determined by an employee from the Environment Department before work begins. For information: 450 4553371, Option 1

For many years, the shorelines of Québec’s lakes and waterways have been subject to many significant modifications
(removal of plant cover, backfilling, grassing, etc.). These actions have had a tremendous impact on nature and the environment, resulting in erosion, the disappearance of wildlife
habitats and the proliferation of algae.

Dog walking is prohibited in the City’s public parks.
Instead, pet owners are invited to use of one of the
four dog parks available throughout the City: on Marier Avenue, on Du Ruisselet Avenue, on Lorne-Worsley
Street and at the corner of Saint-Charles Avenue and
Montée Cadieux. All fecal matter produced by an animal in public or private areas must immediately be
removed by its owner and disposed of in a hygienic
manner.
To ensure the tranquility, use of machinery or equipment
such as lawn tractors, edgers and leaf blowers is restricted to the following times:
• Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
• Saturday and holidays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
• Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

DRINKING WATER: REGULATING TO ENSURE
RESPONSIBLE USE
Although the by-law concerning the outdoor use of drinking
water applies year-round, there is a significant rise in usage
during the summertime, especially as a result of lawn watering. Owners serviced by the municipal water supply must
absolutely respect the watering schedule or risk being fined.
Pools
With the exception of new pools or those requiring repairs, pool
water must be treated to avoid having to replace it. Pool water
level maintenance is permitted at any time except during watering hours. A permit is needed to install a new pool. A backwash
should not exceed five minutes.
Permis are issued free of charge. However, once a permit has
been issued, a $20 fee will be charged for changing the date.
No permits are issued between July 1 and August 31.
Flowers, gardens, borders, shrubs and hedges can be watered manually at all times, using a watering can or a handheld hose equipped with an automatic shut-off nozzle. Motorized vehicules can be washed following the same rules.
Washing dwellings of six units or less is authorized, once a year,
before May 31st. After that date, a permit is required. For dwellings
of more than six units, the commercial, industrial and institutionnal
buildings, washing is only authorized if it is not done with the drinking water of the City.
Any person who contravenes By-law 1623 is liable to a fine
ranging from $150 to $2,000 for an individual and from
$300 to $4,000 for a business. The by-law is available at

EMERALD ASH BORER: REMAIN ON ALERT!
At this time last year, the City launched an extensive information campaign on the emerald ash borer. Shortly afterwards,
the insect was discovered in Vaudreuil-Dorion—the first city
within the Vaudreuil-Soulanges MRC to be affected.
Since then, the City has stepped up its efforts to, on the one hand,
inform residents of the problem and, on the other hand, undertake
preventive treatment and felling of ash trees located in parks and
thoroughfares. In 2015, 99 public ash trees were treated using
TreeAzinTM in four sectors: Bel-Air, Dorion-Gardens, Vieux-Dorion and Maison-Valois Park. The Public Works Department has
also planted 605 new trees throughout the territory.
In 2016, it is expected that approximately 100 public ash trees
will be treated. Trees are selected based on condition and location, with an equal number of trees selected from each of the
four sectors. The City will also plant 600 trees, equally divided
among municipal thoroughfares, parks and green spaces.
What is TreeAzinTM ?
TreeAzinTM is a botanical insecticide formulated with a repulsive substance naturally produced by the exotic Neem tree.
Treatment with TreeAzinTM is likely to keep ash trees healthy
for extended periods at a cost equal to or lower than the cost
of felling and replacing trees. TreeAzinTM can only be applied
by an arborist certified by Bioforest who is registered with the
City. It is ideally applied between early June and late August.

KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR ASH TREES
The infestation is still in the early stages, but the discovery
of the emerald ash borer suggests that the entire territory is
now at high risk of being affected. We highly suggest that
you check all of your trees to ensure they are healthy. There
are two options for dealing with trees that have been affected: treatment using TreeAzinTM or preventive felling. Residents are subsidized by the city for treatment of affected trees
and will be reimbursed for 50% of the cost, for a maximum
of $200 per tree and two trees per property. If you prefer
to chop down your tree, municipal by-laws authorize that it
be done between October 1 and March 15 in order to prevent the insect from spreading. A permit is required to do so.
Regardless of the option you choose, you must contact the
Environment Department before taking action.
Last year, the Environment Department
received 24 subsidy requests, representing
a total of 34 trees treated using TreeAzinTM.
The insect
The Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus planipennis) is a beetle native to Asia that was first detected in North America in 2002.
Countless cities in Québec are now forced to contend with
this invasive wood-boring insect. Metallic green in colour
and about the size of a grain of rice, the emerald ash borer
attacks all species of ash trees and spreads at a rapid rate. At
the adult stage, the insect feeds off the leaves of all species of
ash trees. They lay their eggs and when the latter hatch, the
larva feed on the living tissue below the bark of the trees. Larva spend one to two winters there before emerging as adults
the following summer.
NEW LOW-FLOW TOILET
REBATE PROGRAM
A standard toilet uses 13 to 20 litres with every flush. Replacing an old toilet with a low-flow version will allow you to
save at least 50 litres of water per day. The Environment Department is pleased to offer the citizens of Vaudreuil-Dorion
a new rebate program, providing a maximum $75 refund
on the purchase of a low-flow toilet. Citizens can request a
rebate for up to two toilets per residence, per year.
The signs of infestation appear three or four years after the
tree is first attacked and include:
• dieback of the crown of the tree;
• multiple side shoots (epicormic sprouts) growing on the
trunk or branches;
• small, D-shaped exit holes;
• S-shaped tunnels under the bark;
• vertical splits in the bark.

Thanks to a partnership agreement with TOHU, Flip FabriQue
will be presenting the world premiere of its brand new show—
Transit—right here in Vaudreuil-Dorion. A total of four 75-minute performances will be held under the Eugene Chaplin Big
Top, on June 24 at 7:30 p.m., on June 25 at 2:00 p.m. and

with such internationally renowned troupes as Cirque du Soleil and Cirque Éloize. Their first show, called Attrape-moi,

an international tour, making their way to Berlin, New York
and Paris, to name just a few. Upon their return home, the
members of Flip FabriQue performed all summer long at the
Agora in the Port of Quebec as part of Crépuscule before an
audience of 115,000 spectators.

The Mozaïk parade will launch the Fête nationale festivities in
Vaudreuil-Dorion for the sixth year in a row. Music group Rusty
will help get the party started at the corner of Bourget Street
and Saint-Charles Avenue starting at 7:00 p.m. They will then
join the parade and make their way down to the Cité-desJeunes campus in anticipation of the fireworks display—this
year celebrating its 30th anniversary—slated to begin at about
10:00 p.m. Two stations will be set up, providing spectators
with entertainment while they wait for the parade. Viva Média
has lots of surprises in store at its offices on Saint-Charles Avenue and the dancers from Studio Nova Step will be performing
at the corner of Sainte-Madeleine.

Note that the annual registration certificate is not a replacement
for the temporary application permit. The latter is required in
situations of infestation requiring the application of a pesticide
other than a low-impact pesticide. Citizens can request a temporary application permit from the Environment Department.
White grub infestation?
A PESTICIDE-FREE CITY
Since 2009, municipal by-laws have prohibited the use of
pesticides within the territory of Vaudreuil-Dorion. In special
situations, however, the application of low-impact pesticides
may be required—for example, when treating ash trees using
TreeAzinTM.
Only entrepreneurs who hold a registration certificate from
the City (renewed yearly) are authorized to apply these types
of pesticides. To request a certificate, download the form
at ville.vaudreuil-dorion.qc.ca. The site also outlines
the by-law governing outside use of fertilizer and
pesticide. Unregistered entrepreneurs are subject to
a fine between $500 and $1,000, plus applicable
fees.
Ecological solutions are a better option than synthetic pesticides, which cause white grub infestations to return and
worsen in subsequent years. In fact, these types of pesticides
destroy other insects living in the soil that play a beneficial
role—as predators to white grubs, for example. They also
help white grubs build up their resistance. As such, synthetic
pesticides should only be used as a last resort, when every
other approach has failed. In this case, you must request a
temporary application permit from the Environment Department. You must also obtain this permit when applying certain over-the-counter pesticides that are prohibited within the
Vaudreuil-Dorion territory since they contain ingredients that
can be dangerous for one’s health and the environment.

SEPTIC SYSTEMS
A provincial regulation (R.R.Q., c.Q-2. r.22) has governed
the treatment and disposal of wastewater for isolated residences since 1981 and each municipality is responsible for
ensuring this regulation is adhered to. Property owners affected by this regulation are obligated to fulfill the obligations
stipulated within it.
SEPTIC TANK
• In the case of a permanent residence, septic tanks must
be emptied every two years and, in the case of a seasonal
residence, every four years. Owners of a seasonal residence must also fill out the Owner’s Declaration.
• Forward a copy of the invoice you received for the septic
tank emptying to the City.
• Annually clean and inspect your septic tank’s prefilter if it
is equipped with one.

• Don’t wait until your septic system is full before having it
emptied.
If your grass is very green and spongy near your septic system,
if there is a strong odour, grey or black liquid on the surface
of your lot, or if wastewater becomes difficult to evacuate,
this might indicate that your septic system is malfunctioning.
A septic system that has not been properly maintained can
result in contamination of drinking water and sewer backup in
addition to having an impact on health and the environment
and adversely affecting your property value. If your sewer system is not in proper working order, it must be changed for a
new one.
Should the regulation fail to be respected, the City may have
any required work done at the property owner’s expense and
the latter may also be subject to a fine. Note that changes
such as adding a room to your residence may require modifications to your septic system. A permit must be obtained
from the City before any changes can be made to your septic
system.

A few months ago, the Association des bibliothèques publiques du Québec (Quebec Public Library Association)
implemented the Biblio-Aidants program in over 520 public
libraries. The objective of the program was to inform natural
caregivers on illnesses and issues they are confronted with on
a daily basis. Between now and 2030, it is estimated that one
in three people will be considered a natural caregiver.
The biblioaidants.ca Web site contains 15 theme-based documents offered free of charge and covering the following
topics: ageing and the elderly, cancer, intellectual disability, bereavement, diabetes, physical disability, Alzheimer’s
disease, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease and stroke, pulmonary disease, natural caregivers, mental health, multiple
sclerosis, palliative care and autism spectrum disorders.

VISITS
On June 5, 2016, between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., the
16th edition of Leucan’s Shaved Head Challenge will be held
at Salon Le Loft in Vaudreuil-Dorion (90 Charbonneau Avenue). This year’s honorary president is professional trainer and
boxer Francis Lefrenière. 11-year-old Sara Gibeau will also
be on hand as Leucan spokesperson and member. Several
volunteers will be making this gesture of solidarity in support
of children affected by cancer and their families. Show your

Until September, firefighters will be making residential prevention visits in certain sectors of the city. Required as part
of the Schéma de couverture de risques en sécurité incendie du ministère de la Sécurité publique du Québec, these
visits aim primarily to reduce the number of fires and their
devastating consequences.

HEAD CHALLENGE
Firefighters will visit your home in a City Fire Department
vehicle and will be wearing their uniform. They will ensure
that you have a working smoke detector on every floor of
your home, as required by regulation, and check both your
extinctors and carbon monoxide detectors. They may also
share tips and information concerning heating, electricity,
evacuation plans, kitchen frying and clearing of exits.
These visits also serve to update the 911 database. As
such, when receiving an emergency call, the dispatcher
will be equipped to provide information that can help firefighters better deal with the situation.

firefighters with the City of Vaudreuil-Dorion’s
Fire Station. They are the very first team of
full-time firefighters to join the ranks of Firehouse 12, located at 500 Forbes Street.

This spring, the Fire Department was called to fight a fire that
had started in a dryer that had been left unattended. This particular fire unfortunately resulted in extensive damage.
Here are a few preventive measures you can take to reduce the
risk of fire when using your clothes dryer:
• Respect manufacturer guidelines when installing and using
your appliance.
• It is highly recommended that your vent duct be made of
metal and corrosion resistant, and be as rigid and straight
as possible between the dryer and the building exit point in
order to avoid lint accumulation.
• Avoid pushing the dryer too close to the wall in order to
prevent from blocking the aeration system or wedging the
evacuation hose.
• Clean the dryer lint filter after every use.
• Don’t leave your home while your appliance is running. The
same can be said for other household appliances such as
your dishwasher.
Was your home built in the 1970s or 80s? If so,
the Fire Department recommends that you have
your electrical panel checked by a professional.
During these years, fuse boxes manufactured by
CEB were typically installed. Despite a recall by
the company, these fuse boxes have been the
cause of many fires in the past and continue to
be a problem today. In fact, just last April, the fire
department responded to a home fire that had
started because of this type of electrical panel.
If you own an electrical panel or fuse box manufactured by CEB, we highly recommend that you
contact a qualified electrician to have it checked
in order to make sure it does not become the
source of a fire.

On May 2, 2016, 11 students from Harwood,
Sainte-Madeleine and Hymne-au-Printemps
schools were invited to experience municipal
politics first-hand for a day as part of the Mayor
and Municipal Counsellor for a Day activity
organized by the Vaudreuil-Dorion Optimist
Club. The students earned their spots as the
winners of youth contests in four different categories: the art of expression, La Dictée du Gouverneur, Math and Chess.
The students had the opportunity to visit the
Sûreté du Québec station, the firehouse on
Forbes Street, City Hall and Centre Multisports.
During the evening, they met with the municipal
counsellors in the meeting room and signed the
city’s guestbook.

WOMEN, THE PILLARS
OF NEW FRANCE
The 24th annual edition of the Seigneuriales de Vaudreuil-Dorion will spotlight
the role of women in the era of New France. This popular event, organized by
the Musée régional de Vaudreuil-Soulanges, will be held in the Vieux-Vaudreuil
area on June 2, 3, 4 and 5. A series of activities and celebrations will be offered for both young and old, including the traditional tree-planting (plantation
du Mai) ceremony.
The festivities will begin on Thursday June 2 with two new events: Catherine
Trestler’s Tea Room at Maison Trestler and the Dans la cour des grands concert
by Orchestre symphonique de la Vallée-du-Haut-Saint-Laurent at Saint-Michel
Church.

The ever-popular Souper des Seigneurs will take place under the main tent on
Friday, June 3. Le Salon de jeux du Marquis will allow visitors to discover traditional games from this era. Tickets for the dinner/show are available at a cost of
$95 at the Musée régional de Vaudreuil-Soulanges. For the first time this year,
museum members will be given a $10 discount. An additional $10 discount will
also be granted to members of the Caisse populaire.

Over the course of the weekend, on the museum’s property, several groups
will be re-enacting daily life of the times, both for encampment inhabitants
and soldiers. Visitors can also enjoy demonstrations of several historical crafts
and occupations that have all but disappeared. Families can fully participate in
the experience by taking part in a variety of historical activities outlined in the
event’s brochure. The many musicians and entertainers on hand will be joined
by countless artisans and agri-food exhibitors demonstrating their know-how. In
addition to all this, Esther-Blondin Park, located steps away, will host Place des
Premières Nations, a re-creation of Amerindian village and French military camp
from the 18th century.

Musican group Galant, tu perds ton temps will perform on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
on the Desjardins Vaudreuil-Soulanges stage. This all-female quintet will entertain with a cappella versions of traditional songs that are part of the Quebec and
Acadian folklore. The evening will continue with the Concours intermondial de
la Grande Menterie en Nouvelle-France, hosted by Eric Michaud, spokesperson
for the Seigneuriales de Vaudreuil-Dorion event and Roi des Menteurs.
