teens — ages 2 to 15 — a safe, exciting, and memory-making experience.
Camp, like many Y programs, is about learning skills, developing character and making friends. But few
environments are as special as camp, where kids become a community. They learn to be more independent
and how to contribute to a group while engaging in physical, social and educational activities. Amidst
the fun, our camps teach self-reliance and the development of good character and leadership. Whether
campers are engaged in sports, art, games, outdoor adventure, water activities or educational learning, the
YMCA of Montclair counselors dedicate their time and skills to making sure camp is an amazing experience
for every camper.

I’m a Big Kid Now is specially designed for 2-3 year old children and is based off
our preschool readiness program that we run during the school year. Each day is
filled with indoor free exploratory play, art, music and songs, circle time, snack, and
outdoor play time. Potty training is not necessary and you may sign up for as many
weeks as you wish. Don’t let the little ones miss out on camp fun this summer!

June Bugs is here for those who need a great program between preschool ending
and summer beginning. Fun activities to keep your child active and learning include
daily swimming, art, gym, and outdoor time. Special enrichment classes such as
music, dance, and cooking further enhance each camper’s experience. PLEASE NOTE:
Campers need to be potty trained.

At New Discoveries Camp our staff believes it is important to meet every child’s
physical, creative, and emotional need. Children are given the opportunity to
play with and meet new friends. They learn new games and skills during specialty
activities including sports, nature, science, Healthy U nutrition, cooperative
games, creative arts, drama, and instructional swim. And finally, they grow both
emotionally and physically throughout the summer. This allows them to develop
confidence and build self-esteem, while creating new memories.

Early Adventures offers children ages 3-Kindergarten a safe, fun, and creative first time
camp experience. Children grow in self-reliance, confidence, and self-esteem, while building
lots of new skills. Children are grouped according to their age, and move through the
program center to different activities and adventures throughout the day. All special events
and activities are created around the theme for the week. Whether it’s through singing,
swimming or art, our camp staff leads children in developing strong YMCA values: Caring,
Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.

Early Adventures has many flexible options for parents to choose
from. No matter which time frame you choose, campers take part in
high quality programming and interact with well-trained and caring
staff throughout their day. Both full day and half day campers
participate in fun activities and swim daily. We are dedicated to the
physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development of all campers,
and have designed this program surrounding these needs.
Please note: Registration for the full day is very limited. We advise
that you plan accordingly and take part in our Registration Day on
March 19th at the Geyer Family Branch.

EARLY ADVENTURES FOCUS CAMP
BRAND NEW THIS YEAR! Check out our afternoon offerings, there is a camp theme for every child to
enjoy, learn, and gain new skills. This week-long experience is filled with an array of activities that tailor to
various abilities and creative outlets. The objective of this camp is to focus in on a certain subject area in an
educational, fun, and innovative way.

G.A.P. is for students wanting or needing to increase the specific skills of reading,
writing, and math. The program goals are to reverse summer learning loss, achieve
learning gains, and give students the chance to master some material that they did
not learn during the previous school year. The program is only offered for a half-day,
leaving plenty of time to enjoy the summer afternoons. Led by Elementary Education
certified teachers, students need only bring a morning snack - we will provide the rest. If you need your camper to be entertained in the afternoon, the Summer Sparks Camp
offers enrichment workshops from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students must bring a lunch
in addition to their snacks if registering for a Summer Sparks afternoon workshop.

Summer Sparks enrichment programs are all completely hands on as well as highly
interactive. Program examples are science, writing, social skills, building, drama, music,
travel, and so much more. All classes taught by professional educators with experience
in specific subject areas. It’s your child’s choice of morning or afternoon sessions or
sign up for a full day (2 sessions). Enrichment activities expand the minds of campers
and keep them educationally engaged in a fun way during the summer months. All
activities take place on-site.

Research shows that the key to stemming summer reading loss is finding novel ways
to get books into the hands of children during the summer break. A.C.E., a summer
education alignment program, helps keep kids on track with reading, writing, and math
skills and includes DEAR (Drop Everything And Read). Hands on science, art, music,
and physical activity are all part of the daily program. Led by Elementary Education
certified teachers, students bring lunch, a drink, and snack, and we provide the rest.

This American Camp Association accredited camp provides children with exciting
adventures, cooperative learning, and tons of fun! Campers have an action-packed day
starting right after the fun bus ride with morning announcements and wacky events at
camp opening. The day then consists of a variety of activities in smaller groups that
may include arts and crafts, playing sports, catching a fish, paddling a boat, working
as a team, exploring nature and science, and much, much more! While other activities
vary from day to day, swim lessons are provided daily. Campers express their creativity,
unleash their boundless energy, learn new skills, and develop meaningful relationships.
TIER PRICING: Realizing that families have differing abilities to pay, we’ve instituted a
voluntary 2-tier pricing program. This is strictly an honor system; select the fee you feel is
appropriate for your family.
This program is voluntary and in no way influences the experience children receive.
TIER 1: This fee is based on the actual cost of camp for a child to participate. It includes
expenses for staff, maintenance, snack, programs, supplies and wear/tear to the facility.

TIER 2: This is our Y-subsidized rate. It does not reflect the true cost of operating camp.
TRADITIONAL DAY CAMP
Experience everything we have to offer by signing up for one or more of our weekly sessions. Because of our
themes, every week at Traditional Camp is completely different, so join us for the entire summer!
Campers are grouped as follows:
• ROOKIE VILLAGE for children age 5/entering Kindergarten
• JUNIOR VILLAGE for children ages 6 & 7/entering 1st & 2nd grade
• MIDDLE VILLAGE for children ages 8 & 9/entering 3rd & 4th grade
• SENIOR VILLAGE for children ages 10-13/entering 5th grade & up
Lake Swimming and Fun Water Activities
Your summer camp experience wouldn’t be complete without taking a dip in our
beautiful freshwater lake. Campers get to cool off by enjoying lots of lake time. Water
safety is the Y’s #1 priority, so campers are scheduled for swim lessons Monday through
Thursday, with free swim on Friday. Our American Red Cross Certified Lifeguards test
every camper’s swim ability before they hop in the lake, placing them at the correct
swim level. Our group lessons are inspired by the National YMCA Progressive Swim Lesson Program. Our lake
is the ‘central hub’ of the excitement, action, and learning. Kayaks, canoes, pedal boats, and paddle boards are
campers’ favorites, with ‘walking on water’ on the much loved aqua-mat being the biggest hit. Spending time in
and around our lake adds great value, and helps build confidence and life skills in campers, one splash at a time!

CAMP AT THE LAKE SPECIALTY CAMPS
These camps are held at the same location as traditional camp and campers travel on their regular bus. Specialty
Camps are designed to provide an intense exposure to one program area and are a great way for our 8-13 year
old campers to add even more variety to their summer experience. It is very important that campers have a
passion and strong desire to explore this program area. All Specialty Campers have swim lessons and participate
in Special Event Fridays.
Sports Camps
SUPER SOCCER (Session 1 & 5): A soccer experience like no other! Discover the thrill of being
part of a team preparing for the playoffs! Skills, drills, fun games, activities, and scrimmages.
Develop speed, ball work, strength, and agility. Group challenges and initiatives help develop
teamwork. All participants must bring cleats and shin guards.
SPORTS FAN CLUB (Session 2 & 6): If you love every sport and want to try them all, then this
is your chance. Lots of activity and variety. Includes basketball, flag football, lacrosse, soccer,
ultimate frisbee, volleyball, and softball. Through practice drills, scrimmages, and tournaments,
Sports Fan Club emphasizes the fun of learning about different kinds of sports and developing
positive attitudes about teamwork and competition.
BASKETBALL BONANZA (Session 3 & 7): Who says the only basketball madness happens in
March? Focus on dribbling, shooting, defense, and rebounding through drills, warm-up games,
activities, and scrimmages. Participants show off their skills and teamwork at camp opening on
Friday, cheered on by a ‘stadium’ full of their friends!
WORLDWIDE SPORTS (Session 4 & 8): All aboard for a global sporting experience that is
sure to get you hooked on games from around the world! Campers ‘travel’ around camp on
the Lakeside Express, visiting countries from afar, diving not only into new and captivating
pastimes, but also the culture of the region. Cricket, rugby, quidditch, kabaddi, bocce, gaga,
boomerangs, and more!
Arts Camps
PERFORMING ARTS (Session 1 & 5): Join the cast or crew and take the stage to get
your creativity and imagination rolling! Hilarious drama games, story development,
character building, costume, and set design are explored while preparing for Friday’s
live show in front of the entire camp!
CREATIVE ARTS (Session 2, 4, 6 & 8): Explore a variety of art mediums including:
clay, paint, papier mâché, collage, charcoal, printmaking, animation/comics, bookmaking, photography, and
cooking crafts. We learn about cultures and famous artists, and also use items in nature found at camp. Each
session follows a new theme, so get your imagination flowing and discover your inner
artist as you find which mediums suit you best.
DYNAMITE DANCE (Session 3 & 7): For children who love to dance and ‘bust a move’!
Campers use their expressive nature and physical energy in this camp. They learn
the basics of jazz, modern, and hip-hop. Dance instructors give daily warm-ups and
lessons incorporating great music. Campers also improvise their own dances using
time, space, energy, body, and rhythm. The week ends with a mini-recital to entertain
the entire camp community.

Outdoor Education Camps (for campers ages 8-13, unless otherwise noted)
SPLASH CAMP (Session 1): A week living in Water World. Spend the week fishing, paddle boarding, kayaking,
canoeing, raft building, and exploring the wonders of water conducting magical science experiments. Campers
put all their new found skills to the test in the Second Annual H20 Olympics and the King and Queen of Water
World are crowned. Round off the week with a rafting trip down the Delaware River!

CAMP SUPER SLEUTH (Session 2): Can you solve the mystery? Campers, training as secret agents, get
codenames, and are immersed in a mystery that not even the Pink Panther can solve. Learn how to make invisible
ink, check for fingerprints, make spy gadgets, and follow the clues to solve a mystery that

DESTINATION EXPLORATION (Session 3): Get ready to become an expert explorer. During
the beginning of the week campers explore the trails at camp, learn how to read a map, use a
compass, participate in a scavenger hunt, and much more. On Thursday they head to High Point
State Park to climb the monument, swim, and set up camp for the night.
[Includes an overnight trip on Thursday]
THE GREAT CAMPING COOK-OFF (Session 4): Can you taste victory? Combine your love of the outdoors and
food! Campers develop essential outdoor cooking skills and techniques, but only after mastering the art of
making a fire and filtering and boiling water. We get creative with ingredients and cook over the campfire, on
grills, and camping stoves. All skills are put to the test with a ‘Chopped’ style cooking competition featuring
mystery ingredients and ‘celebrity’ judges.
H2WOW (Session 5): A week living in Water World. Spend the week fishing, paddle
boarding, kayaking, canoeing, raft building, and exploring the wonders of water
conducting magical science experiments. Campers put all their newfound skills to the
test in the Second Annual H20 Olympics and the King and Queen of Water World are
crowned. Round off the week with a rafting trip down the Delaware River!

UNDER CONSTRUCTION (Session 6): What will you invent? Explore the inventions & inventors that shape
our world — and innovate and invent to design our own inventions. Design. Build. Test. Campers test the limits
of their creativity and the limits of their designs. Designing & building are only half the fun — testing allows
campers the opportunity to push their design to fail and then learn from experience to rebuild their inventions
stronger than ever.
FEAR FACTOR (Session 7): Take it to the limit! Are you tough enough to tackle the challenges
that lay ahead in this extreme camp experience? Campers push themselves safely to the
limit, facing both mental and physical challenges around our 30 adventurous acres. The ultimate
challenge comes when the group reaches new heights on a white knuckle high ropes course
and camps out overnight in tents.

SURVIVOR (Session 8): Are you up for the challenge? Campers start as one large group and then split into
tribes. Teams compete against each other in reward and immunity challenges, gaining valuable survival skills
along the way. Tribal Council is twice a day in which teams receive advantages...or disadvantages on their
journey into the unknown!

Explorers is designed to spark your child’s imagination, grow new friendships,
and assist in discovering new talents each and every day. With creatively-planned
activities, campers enjoy their summer to the fullest and look forward to returning
each year. Every week at Explorers is filled with fun, age-appropriate activities and
trips to local destinations.
In our small camp culture, a maximum of 60 campers per week, everyone gets to
know each other and have a personalized experience. Our goal is to provide a high
quality, safe, fun and exciting summer camp while promoting the Y’s focus areas of
youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Youth Basketball All-Stars Camp (Y.B.A.) is the perfect place for your basketball
enthusiast. Y.B.A. is an intense program for basketball players of varying abilities.
Campers further develop their skills, learn game strategies, and achieve goals on and
off the court. Each day is spent improving fundamentals, performing interactive drills,
building offensive and defensive skills, playing in-house tournaments, and getting in
shape. Campers may register for as many weeks of the program as they like.

At Voyagers youth go on thrilling excursions, make an impact in the local community,
and choose their weekly camp activities such as drama, art, sports, cooking, and so
much more. Day trip opportunities are Wednesday-Friday and may include, but are not
limited to, laser tag, Six Flags Amusement Park, rock climbing, Mountain Creek, race
car driving, the beach, Bronx Zoo, bowling, and movies. Trained staff maintains a high
level of safety, fun, and mentoring for all participants.

Summer Quest gives adolescents a great foundation in preparation for the working world
in a fun, creative, and skill oriented way. Everything they’ll need to know to get them
started on a career path is explored:
• Writing resumes
• Dressing for the part
• Communication skills
• Leadership development
Teens can earn first aid certifications, learn how to interview and be a part of fun and
engaging internships at our YMCA branches and our various summer camp locations.
There is a field trip on the 2nd Friday of each session. The first two weeks are spent in
workshops and group activities. In the second two weeks, new skills and self confidence
are put to the test in volunteer positions at our summer camps or at the YMCA. Two
Directors facilitate this program and mentor the teens.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
Every child deserves a camp experience. Through the Annual Campaign, the Y raises money for camp
scholarships. To be eligible, campers must reside within our service area: Bloomfield, Cedar Grove, Clifton, Glen
Ridge, Montclair, and Verona. Applications for financial assistance are available at the Y and must be submitted
by May 6, 2016.
HELP SEND A CHILD TO CAMP
Camping with the Y is a time for discovery, fun, and friendship. Help cover the cost of camp for a young
adventurer and your gift will provide an unforgettable summer experience at one of our Y camps. Any dollar
amount given counts, and helps children develop core values, learn new skills, make new friends, and have loads
of fun in the process!
