all the information to help you find out what’s on
offer and where to go to find it.
PLAY IT SAFE ON GRAVEL ROADS
Gravel roads can be treacherous if you are not
careful. Like a wet road, braking distances are
double that of a sealed road. Because of the
loose top surface and corrugations you will not
be able to turn as sharply as when on sealed
roads either.
We want you to enjoy your holiday here and
come back again, so please slow down on gravel
roads and drive to your ability and the conditions.

Aboriginal people have been in the Esperance area for over 200 000 years,
and the Aboriginal name of the area is “Kepa Kurl”, which means “the place
where the waters lay down like a boomerang”. In 1841 Edward John Eyre
with his Aboriginal guide Wylie, met Captain Rossiter on their epic journey
from Adelaide, aboard the French Whaler “Mississippi” in the bay which is
now known as Rossiter Bay. Wylie Bay was named by Eyre to honour his
guide.
Service Numbers
Esperance is blessed with a
Mediterranean style climate which
provides us with a temperate and
enjoyable climate all year round.
The Esperance town site was first settled by the Dempster brothers in the
1860s, when they walked from Northam to Esperance with their families,
Aboriginal guides and over 3000 head of stock. The Esperance town was
formally gazetted in 1893 and farming and agriculture were the key industries.
Tourist Information Centres
French explorers are credited with making the first landing in Esperance,
whilst sheltering from a storm in 1792. The town itself was named after a
French ship, L’Espérance, which is French for ‘hope’.
In 1802 British navigator Matthew Flinders sailed through the Bay of Isles and
named several key Esperance locations, including Lucky Bay and Thistle Cove.
The town continued to flourish as a farming community, and in 1962 work
commenced on the Port Authority, which saw the Esperance economy
diversify.
In 2014 Esperance has a population of approximately 15 000 people, and has
a number of key industries, including tourism, mining, fishing and agriculture.

The Beaches...
Arguably the best beaches in the world...
Whether you prefer lazing in the sun, reading a book in the shade, throwing in a line, snorkelling,
surfing, swimming or just splashing about, Esperance has a beach just for you. In fact with more
than 20 of the most spectacular beaches you will ever encounter nearby the only difficulty is
deciding which one to visit today.
Esperance Foreshore and
Castletown Quays
The pristine Esperance Bay is fringed with pines
and visited by whales, dolphins and seals and each
beach has its own special attraction. Calm waters
in front of the Yacht Club are particularly good for
young families, the James Street Jetty has a great
slide and swimming pontoon, while Castletown
Quay’s long white beach with gentle waves is
perfect for families with ‘beginner surfers’ in tow.
During the summer months Elto’s Waterpark visits
the Esperance Foreshore providing hours of fun and
entertainment for all ages.
Facilities: Gas barbecues and shade shelters, toilets,
disabled access toilets, showers.
West Beach
A favourite with surfers, this very beautiful beach
should be approached with caution, as rips are
prevalent here. Local residents can be found
swimming in the lagoon pools between the reef and
shore when conditions are safe. Activities include
surfing and walking. Facilities: Toilets & showers
Distance: 3 km.
Fourth Beach
Blue Haven
(Voted ‘Most Popular Beach in WA’)
Hidden at the bottom of a long flight of stairs, Blue
Haven’s pristine waters, sheltered swimming and
good fishing make this a great family beach. Don’t let
the stairs put you off from visiting though – the view
from the platform at the top is spectacular.
Salmon Beach
Salmon Beach is a very popular fishing spot for locals,
who will often be seen casting a line from the beach.
The waters can be quite rough at Salmon Beach and
it is therefore not safe for swimming.
Renowned for its sweeping beaches, Fourth Beach
is quite popular with those passionate about water
sports.
Twilight Beach
Twilight Beach is a spectacular family beach with
crystal clear waters and snow white sand. As
the beach curves to the south west it becomes
increasingly protected by its orientation and two
offshore rocks. The beach is patrolled by surf
lifesavers during the summer weekends. Activities
include swimming and surfing.
Distance: 7 km
Facilities: Toilets & Showers
Observatory Beach
Observatory Beach is a hot spot for wind and kite
surfers, promising awesome waves without the
crowds. Relatively unknown, this beach is also great
for surfing and boogie boarding.
Distance: 9.5 km
Facilities: Toilets, disabled access toilets
Ten Mile Lagoon
Ten Mile Lagoon is a great swimming beach, especially
for families with young children. A rocky shore acts
as a natural breakwater, forming a long shallow pool
that’s considerably warmer than the ocean. Activities
include swimming, surfing and boogie boarding, while
you’ll also see people fishing off the reef.
For naturalists, Esperance’s ‘free’ beach is 100 metres
further down.

under your feet. The bay is well protected from

Mamang Walk Trail is an outstanding 15.5 km (31
km return) walk along the spectacular Fitzgerald
River National Park coast line from Point Ann to
Point Charles, overlooking the Fitzgerald River
Mouth and the central wilderness area beyond.
Specially designed viewpoints with expansive views
of the coast, inland peaks, river valleys and inlets are
provided along the trail, including some with almost
the whole coastal sweep from Doubtful Island near
Bremer Bay to East Mt Barren in the far north east.
Point Ann Heritage Trail is short walk trail in the
western section of the park that affords stunning
views of St Mary’s beach toward Point Charles. During
winter Point Ann is a haven for both Southern Right
and Humpback whales. Recently upgraded facilities at
the start of the trail offer toilets and BBQ facilities with
ample parking and is accessible by 2WD vehicles.
The Fitzgerald Biosphere Reserve
What is a World Biosphere Reserve?
Biosphere reserves are areas of terrestrial and
coastal ecosystems endorsed by the United Nations,
where people and nature can flourish together.
The Fitzgerald Biosphere Reserve contains an
undisturbed core enclosed by the Fitzgerald River
National Park surrounded by a buffer of uncleared
bush, protected coastline and marine environment.
Beyond this buffer is the `zone of cooperation’,
within which the regions agricultural production also
takes place.
Why is the Fitzgerald Biosphere special?
The Fitzgerald Biosphere Reserve is referred to as
“the most important Mediterranean ecosystem
reserve in the world” (Dr Bernd von Drost,
1989, UNESCO), not only for its rich and unique
biodiversity but for the way the community interacts
with the environment and how they are working
to ensure its long term sustainability. The Fitzgerald
Biosphere Reserve is of worldwide concern, such
is its universal value. The bushland, mountains, and
rivers of the Fitzgerald Biosphere Reserve contain
clues to the earth’s evolutionary history. They give
insights into how life on earth continues to unfold
and change and are havens for many unique or
threatened plants and animals.
National Parks...
Camping
Two camping grounds are situated in Cape Le
Grand National Park, one at Lucky Bay, and the
other at Le Grand Beach (see map 2). Facilities
include septic toilets, showers and camper’s
kitchens.
Camping fees apply to Cape Le Grand and Stokes
National Parks. Wood fires are not permitted.
Free gas barbeques are provided.
At Stokes National Park two campsites are located
on the shores of the inlet. Please be sure to bring
sufficient fresh water as there are no available
water supplies in the park. Toilets and BBQ facilities
available.
Peak Charles National Park has an area designated
for camping, but there are no facilities apart from
a bush toilet and walk trail. For most of the year
there is no fresh water, so if you intend to visit,
make sure you are totally self-sufficient.
Several camping areas are provided at Cape Arid
National Park. Thomas River is accessible on gravel
roads. Other areas are accessible by four wheel
drive vehicles only. Wood fires are not permitted
near the coastal section of the park, so we
recommend that you bring a portable gas stove
for cooking.
Vehicle-based camping is available in the Fitzgerald
River National Park at Four Mile Beach, Hamersley
Inlet, Quoin Head (four wheel drives only),
Fitzgerald Inlet (four wheel drives only) and Saint
Mary Inlet. After heavy rains some roads may
occasionally be temporarily closed as a disease
hygiene control measure – so after heavy rains
check with the Department of Parks and Wildlife.
Camping fees apply.
Department of Parks and Wildlife
The Department of Parks and Wildlife officers
are always glad to help. Don’t hesitate to contact
them if you need information or assistance. Visitor
fees apply to Cape Le Grand, Cape Arid, Fitzgerald
River and Stokes National Parks.
Fees are used to improve facilities and help offset
costs.

Remember
Be Careful
Choose fishing or swimming sites with great care.
The Southern Ocean is unpredictable, making rock
fishing and swimming especially dangerous.
Huge waves and swells can suddenly occur even
on calm days. Rocks become slippery when wet.
Riptides are common along the coastline. Stay
on paths and help prevent erosion. Your safety in
natural areas is our concern, but your responsibility.
Please check with Visitor Centre for local Road &
Park Conditions.
Be Clean
Put your litter in bins, or better still, take it with you.
Be Cool
Fire bans apply over the summer months; the
lighting of camp fires is prohibited during this
period. Light fires only in fireplaces provided.
Use own wood when camping. Bring your own
portable gas stove.
Be Considerate
Over two thirds of the plant species in the south
coast national parks are susceptible to the dieback
fungus, so please stay on marked tracks and be very
cautious of spreading mud, particularly following
rain. Help to protect our natural environments.
Protect Animals and Plants
No firearms or pets, please.
Stay on the Road
Follow signs and stay on roads. Normal road rules
apply.

Walks, Wildflowers & Whales
With wild coastal scenery, towering granite peaks, superb bays, snow white beach sand and
brilliant blue waters there is probably no other region in Australia blessed with the number
and variety of national parks and reserves than those located within the South East region of
Western Australia.
The five parks in the region offer magnificent scenery
and the opportunity to escape from the pressures of
everyday living, and are some of the largest remaining
wilderness areas in southern Australia. Whether it’s
bush or coastal walks, deserted beaches, unique
fauna, extraordinary flora, or just the peace and
tranquillity of the great outdoors, the national parks
and reserves of the South East offer visitors a never
ending variety of experiences and scenery all year
round.
Walks, Wildflowers and Whales
Year round walking paths can take you to see
dolphins in a natural environment playing along the
coast. Experience wildflowers in flower season along
the walking trails from July to November and whales
migrating along the coast lines from July to October.
Walks
It’s easy to walk everywhere in Esperance and enjoy
the magnificent scenery on offer. However if a longer
and more challenging walk is more your scene, here
are some suggestions:
• Great Ocean road to Twilight Beach via Rotary
Lookout.
• Walk along the beach from Castletown Quays to
Bandy Creek boat harbour.
• Climb to the top of Frenchman’s Peak.
• Explore Mt Ridley and its own wave rock.
• Explore the vast variety of flora and fauna at the
Kepwari Wetland walk trail.
For more information on these walks or to pick up
specific walk trail maps please visit the Esperance
Visitor Centre.
Wildflowers
From July to November experience the amazing
variety of both inland and Coast Heath Wildflowers.
From the stunning Fitzgerald Biosphere Reserve
with hundreds of wildflower species unique to
the coastal heath along the Great Ocean Drive in
Esperance to The Cape Le Grand and Cape Arid
National Park.
Enjoy wildflower viewing from your vehicle or
strolling along the walking paths.
Whales
The Southern Right whales migrate along the coast
from June to October and can be seen frolicking in
the water from many vantage points. Amongst the
more spectacular viewing is: Isrealite Bay (4WD
access only), Cape Arid – Thomas Creek, Cape
Le Grand beaches, Esperance Bay – Recherche
Archipelago and the Great Ocean Drive.
Take a stroll along the walking paths in winter and
spring, keep one eye on the ocean for whales and
another on the abundant Flora and Fauna.
The Recherche Archipelago
Located off the remote south coast of Western
Australia, the Recherche Archipelago is the
largest group of islands in southern Australia.
The Archipelago consists of 105 islands and
1,500 islets spread over 270 kilometres of
coastline and is fast becoming recognised as
one of our most important aquatic wilderness
areas.
Most of the islands are steep, rocky and
inaccessible to humans and provide sheltered
breeding grounds for sea lions, seals, penguins and

Cape Barren geese. Southern Right whales visit
the sheltered bays and the islands are home to
the endangered Black-Footed rock wallaby.
The main access to the Archipelago is from
the town of Esperance, thus the par ts of the
Archipelago accessible from Esperance are
popular for recreation and marine-based tourism
activities. Esperance is also the hub for a number
of regional industries, including shipping (minerals
and grain) and commercial fishing.
With such an amazing piece of coastline, it is no
surprise that the majority of Esperance locals and
tourists spend their leisure time on the beaches or
out on the ocean.
Kepwari Wetland Walk Trail
A five minute drive from the centre of Esperance,
nestled out of the wind is the Kepwari Wetland
Trail. The one way interpretative trail is 3.6
kilometres in length and is designed to be a
learning experience.
Panel and information displays help you discover why
these wetlands are important, why they are under
threat and how you can help protect them for future
generations.
The trail winds through fringing sedge lands,
heathlands, under banksia canopies and over

dune ridges with views of the wetland system and
surrounding catchment.
It is also designed to protect native vegetation from
the threat of dieback. A return trip along the trail
will take about two and a half hours to walk. You can
start at either end. Shorter sections can be walked
instead of the entire trail.
The Wetland Trail consists of 1.5 kilometres of raised
timber boardwalks, and 2.1 kilometres of surfaced
trail. Two bird hides located along the trail provide
an opportunity to quietly observe waterbirds in a
tranquil environment.
Spider Orchid
Great Ocean Walk / Cycle Way
The best walking trail in Western Australia. If
you ride or walk along the pathway between
Esperance Town and Twilight Beach you will be
treated to the sweeping vista of the splendid
coast line.
The pathway will take you past spectacular beaches
such as West Beach (surfing) , Blue Haven (pristine
water), Salmon Beach (great fishing) and Fourth
Beach (water sports).
Stop for a while at one of the several seats to admire
this unforgettable panoramic scene, or walk along
the beach and experience the soft fine, white sand
between your toes.

GREAT OCEAN DRIVE
The Great Ocean Drive (Tourist Loop) is a 38km
scenic drive that follows the local coastline and then
loops back into town. Some of the highlights to see
along the way include the Rotary Lookout, Twilight
Beach, Observatory Point and the Wind Farm.
TEN MILE LAGOON WIND FARM
Ten Mile Lagoon Wind Farm is situated on a coastal
ridge 16 km west of Esperance just off the Great
Ocean Drive and lies in the northern extremities of
the reliable Roaring Forties winds. It was Australia’s
first commercial wind farm that is still operating, and
consists of nine 225kW Vestawind turbines giving a
total generating capacity of just over two megawatts.
The farm was established in October 1993, after the
successful operation of a smaller experimental wind
farm at Salmon Beach. Come and stand under one
of these giants and witness the power of nature at
work.
ADVENTURELAND PARK AND MINIATURE
RAILWAY
Do you have young children looking for something
to do? Try the Adventure Playground located in the
heart of Esperance on the Esplanade next to the
Taylors Beach Bar and Cafe. You will also find the
Esperance miniature railway here, which operates
during school holidays and on weekends from
10:00am to 4:30pm between October 1 and April
30.
HISTORICAL TOWN WALK
A walk around the central town area that will enable
you to learn about the history of Esperance town
centre and see the changes made over the years.
It takes about one and a half hours to complete.
Brochures on the walk are available from the
Esperance Visitor Centre.
Esperance Foreshore Redevelopment
There are few places in the world where a five-minute walk from the centre of town can bring you to the beach, but Esperance is one of them. The newly completed
waterfront celebrates Esperance’s coastal location by linking the foreshore to the CBD.

Fishing
There are not too many places in the world where you can be completely spoilt for choice
when it comes to fishing.
Whether it’s fresh or salt water, on the beach, off the rocks, at the edge of a lake or sitting on a
jetty, there is an abundance of options on offer and a plethora of fish lying in wait.
Some will require 4WD and others are accessible with a normal 2WD vehicle. Here are a few
tips and places to visit.
Fishing off the Beach
{
“If people concentrated on the really
important things in life, there’d be a
shortage of fishing rods” ~ Doug Larson
You will find Salmon, Skippy, Herring, Flathead, Mulloway, Whiting, Gummy
Shark and Tailor at the beaches in and around Esperance
Fishing off the Rocks
Off the rocks you can catch Sweep, Rock Cod & Parrot Fish (Wrasse), Queen
and Pink Snapper Leatherjacket and Groper.
Rock fishing can be very dangerous. Please ensure that you wear a
life jacket, use the mooring hooks installed at popular rock fishing
locations, never fish alone and never turn your back on the sea. Life
jackets are available for loan from Dempster Sporting.
Morwong), Samson Fish, Snook, Herring, Skippy, Whiting, Sweep, Wrasse,
Harlequin Fish, Sargeant Baker and Groper are all commonly caught from a
boat off the shores of Esperance. A fishing licence is required.
Freshwater Fishing
Fishing from the Tanker Jetty
There are copious amounts of black bream in the fresh water lakes in and
around Esperance.
Squid, Herring, Garfish, Tuna or Bonito, Skippy and Snook are all caught by
young and old from Esperance’s iconic Tanker jetty.
Locations close to Esperance:
Fishing in a Boat
Tanker and James St Jetties. Salmon Beach, Four th Beach, Nine, Ten, Eleven,
Four teen Mile beaches, 10 Mile Lagoon and Lake Windabout. All except 14

Smart Tips for Travellers
Getting the most from your holiday involves enjoying both the trip and
the destination. While the focus is often on the destination, following some
important tips can also make the trip safe and enjoyable.
1. Preparation - Sort out aches and pains a month before travelling to allow
solutions to take effect.
2. Cockpit - Set your seat with chair base horizontal and lumbar support
engaged. Try a small pillow behind your lower back if you feel more is needed.
Make sure mirrors are set and a water bottle at hand for hydration.
3. Planning - look at your total distance and plan for activity breaks every 250
- 300kms. Perhaps more frequent if travelling with children or if older than 50.
4. Equipment - Pack a football, tennis ball or frisbee and pre mark on your GPS
the local sports ground or school for activity stops.
5. Ease Neck Strain - Consider driving with a small pillow on your lap to
support the weight of your arms and holding the steering wheel at 8 and 4
o’clock. Keeps both hands on the wheel and being lowly placed, less fatigue on
neck and shoulders.
6. Mobility - When driving remain active; wiggle side to side, pelvic rock and
shrugs shoulders. Music helps. Pick an appropriate safe time, before doing
these stretches.

Eating Out...
It’s always nice to treat yourself to a delicious meal out while on holidays! Esperance
has plenty of excellent dining options to suit whatever your craving may be.
Seasons Restaurant offers a superb dining experience overlooking the bay – you can even enjoy a pre-dinner drink in the
cocktail bar.

If a classic pub meal is what you’re chasing look no further than the Gibson Soak Hotel. This historic pub is located 25 km
from Esperance and offers a genuine Aussie pub atmosphere.
The Condingup Tavern is a family owned and run tavern built over 20 years ago using granite from the family farm. With a
cafe/restaurant, bar and general store/fuel all under one roof they aim to cater for every need. It is the perfect way to top off a
day trip from the Duke of Orleans.
The Taylors Beach Bar & Cafe offers a relaxed family friendly ambience where you can sit ocean side and enjoy a tasty
seafood treat.
For a more casual dining experience drop into Dome, Ocean Blues or Ollies Cafe Lounge for a meal or coffee and cake.
If you’re after a quick meal or snack, McDonalds and McCafe can be found in the middle of town. Don’t forget to drop into
Brumby’s for some hot bread rolls or pastries and grab a takeaway coffee from Coffee Cat or Bean Break to take with you
on your daily adventures.

A message from Esperance RoadWise
Run-off road crashes are the most common vehicle crash type in the Goldfields-Esperance region, accounting for up to 31% of
all serious injury and fatal crashes on our roads. There are many possible reasons for these crashes, including fatigue, excessive
speed, driver impairment (drink or drug driving) and driver distraction.
When a vehicle leaves the road pavement for whatever reason, regaining the bitumen may not be easy as there is often a
drop off between the bitumen and the gravel shoulder, which may also be loose. Often over-steering to get back up onto the
bitumen can result in over-correcting and veering across to the wrong side of the road, or a “jack-knife” if towing.
The consequences of crashes at high travel speeds are serious, so here are some tips on staying safe on the road while visiting
Esperance:
• Take regular breaks. Research indicates that fatigue could be responsible for up to 30% of all road deaths, so don’t drive tired!
• Check the conditions of local roads before you travel by contacting the Shire of Esperance.
• Unsealed roads don’t have regulatory speeds posted as safe travelling speeds will be dependent on the condition of the road.
Drive to conditions on unsealed roads and be aware of unexpected changes in the road environment.
• Slow down and enjoy the ride. Esperance is a beautiful place so take your time to enjoy it! Slowing down is the single most
effective way to stay safe on the roads.
• Before you buy your next vehicle check the ANCAP safety rating. Features like electronic stability control and lane departure
warnings assist in preventing run-off road crashes.
• Studies show that children can be 12 times more distracting than talking on a mobile phone while at the wheel. Make sure
if you are travelling with your family you avoid driver distraction and keep your eyes on the road.
We wish you a safe and happy stay while in Esperance!
