NAPLAN – Grades 3 & 5
At the end of Term 1 all of the students enjoyed participating in our Easter Parade and Egg
Hunt. We would like to thank all the families who donated chocolate eggs for our Easter
raffle and the Parents and Friends Association for organising the raffle and Hot Cross Bun
sales. We appreciate your support for our fundraising efforts and congratulations to all our
raffle winners.
NAPLAN
Mount Waverley North PS has been selected to participate in a NAPLAN Equating Study
for the area of Language Conventions. The equating tests are administered by the
Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) so that the level of
difficulty of NAPLAN tests can be adjusted based on the results of the students that have
been selected across a variety of schools in all states and territories across Australia. Our
Year 3 and Year 5 students will be participating in the Language Conventions test on
nd
Monday 2 May and it will take approximately an hour. This will be a good opportunity for
our students to use this test as a practice run under test conditions in preparation for
NAPLAN which they will be participating in on Tuesday 10th, Wednesday 11th and
Thursday 12th of May.
Our students have been completing some NAPLAN practice tests during class time so they
are familiar with the format and the expectations of these tests. You might like to go
through some of the sample tests with your child so you can help them to feel comfortable
with these tests especially, if they will be doing NAPLAN for the first time. If you would like
to learn more about the NAPLAN tests and see some samples of the tests please refer to
the website below:
http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/prep10/naplan/index.aspx
Click on Information for parents and you will find information about NAPLAN in
different languages or click on NAP link for sample tests.
If you have any questions please speak to your child’s teacher
School Review
This term our staff will begin preparing for our School Review as we are in our final year of
our Strategic Plan (2013-2016). This review will be conducted over Term 2 and 3 and will
involve staff, students, parents as well as Principals from other schools, a School
Education Improvement Leader from the Department of Education and an Independent
Reviewer. It will enable us to reflect on the goals that were set in 2013, celebrate our
achievements, identify our weaknesses and plan for the future improvements that will
enable all students to reach their full potential.

Jobs around the school
There are some branches lying on the ground around the
school and a pile in the car park so if there is a parent
who could gather them up and remove them from the
school grounds I would appreciate your help.
A.P’s Report
Swimming
Our Prep, Year 1 and 2 students have been participating
in their swimming program at Huntingtower. This is a
really important part of Health and Physical Education
program and it is everyone's responsibility to make sure
that all children have the necessary skills to be safe in
and around all types of water. This program is an
opportunity for the students to build upon their skills but it
is important that they continue to learn to swim until they
reach a high level of skills.
ANZAC Service & Staff/Parents v Students
AFL Match
nd
Tomorrow, Friday 22 April our school will reflect on the
service of our ANZACs with an ANZAC Ceremony at
3:00pm at the front of the school by the Lone Pine. Prior
to the ANZAC Service we will have a number of ANZAC
themed learning engagements and, starting at 2:00pm on
the oval, an AFL match. We welcome our families to join
us.
NAPLAN Update
This week a letter went home to parents informing them
of NAPLAN
Our Clubs Program
Our Clubs Program remains an absolute shining beacon
within the school. The Breakfast Club (Tuesday & Friday
mornings) has celebrated an influx in parent volunteers of
late, which has been terrific. Carol’s Craft Club is doing
wonderful things and gives students a place to let their
creative talents run wild. The Chinese Club is increasing
in numbers every week with students enjoying songs,
dance and learning Chinese greetings. Fitness Club is
giving students a kick start to every Thursday morning
and will soon be joined by a Futsal Soccer Club. The
Environment Club is working towards improving our
th
grounds prior to Open Day on May 14 . They would
welcome some parent helpers! The club meets every
Thursday at lunch time. Our Special Religious
Insruction Club (Thursday lunch) is in its second week
and which will soon be joined by The Poetry Club – ‘The
Young Poets Association’. The Young Poets
Association is the inspiration of our Whole School Writing
Coordinator, Miss Vicki Nicolos. The club has a dual
purpose of building a love of poetry and student
connectedness. Miss Nicolos is targeting small student
cohorts, the first group that Miss Nicolos will be working
with is our Year 4 & 5 girls. As a result of information from
or 2015 Student Opinion Survey, this program has been
developed to assist with transition of our middle students
to the Senior School.
Our Clubs Program provides students with a safe
environment to grow, develop, take risks, follow their
passions and most importantly, acts as a ‘vehicle’ for our
school to facilitate positive student well-being. Moreover
our students get to ‘skill build’ in their capacity to relate to
each other. A reminder that parents are always welcome
to join our clubs, please express your interest via the
school office.

School Safety
Dear Parents/Carers
As you are probably aware there was a serious incident
nearby at Laburnum Primary School, where a man
exposed himself to two students on school grounds.
We are taking this incident very seriously, and have been
working with the Department to ensure the safety of our
students.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
We have taken this opportunity to remind students of how
to respond if they are approached by someone they don’t
know or who makes them feel uncomfortable.
Breakfast Club
Student safety is always a top priority at our school, and
like all Victorian schools we follow a number of important
established guidelines on student safety.
I would also encourage parents and carers to speak with
their children about safety around unknown adults.
Some practical tips may include telling them:




To walk directly to and from school
Not to walk alone
To leave the area if anything makes them feel
uncomfortable
To avoid talking to strangers
Chinese Club
Not to get into cars with people they do not know
Kinder Advocates
We are looking for parents that are currently involved in
our local Preschools to support as MWNPS Advocates to
assist us with promotion of our school. Please contact
[email protected] if you are interested.
Tell a trusted adult such as a teacher or parent
immediately
If you have any concerns for your child please do not
hesitate to contact the school, as further support is
available.
Share our great school!
Thanks
We are currently experiencing an increased profile
amongst the wider school community and would love it to
continue! Please share our Social Media sites!
