PRINCIPAL’S PEN WEEK 4 TERM 2
PRINCIPALS FOREWARD - Another great week has flown by and the students have been working to their strengths is class. Our
teachers have been busy displaying student reading data and progressing with student learning journeys. Our teachers have set clear
intentions of “knowing “their student data and using this to inform teaching and improve student learning. This data knowledge
combined with students engaging in their own data and how they can improve their performance can only serve as the hallmarks of a
great school. This can only happen through great teachers having strong relationships with their students and their parents.
NAPLAN - Our Year 3 and 5 students will participate in NAPLAN the week after next. Looking at the big picture NAPLAN was designed
to inform whole school data and how a school implements learning programs. NAPLAN is a point in time test that helps measure
whole school performance and identifies areas of teaching and learning. Student performance has many measures such as internal
school data, assessment tasks, oral reporting and report cards. Things to consider about NAPLAN:

It is a point in time measure of school performance
Make sure the night before any NAPLAN test your child gets a good night sleep
A healthy breakfast is the key to a great start to the day and gets the brain going
Tell your child/children if they have concerns at school when taking the test the teachers are there to help
If your child is nervous about taking the test reassure them that NAPLAN is just another test and just to do
their best. After all when they get older no employer asks what score was achieved on their NAPLAN tests
Our staff has set up comfortable classroom environments with food and drink supplied to all our NAPLAN
participants to ensure they are given the best possible chance of success

PRINCIPAL and EQ STAFF VISIT - Tuesday of this week our school was visited by Principals and other Education Queensland Staff to
experience some of the great ideas and learning strategies happening at our great school. The feedback from all was very positive
further reinforces the great work all the staff has been responsible for at our great school. Congratulations to the students, parents
and staff at Aitkenvale State School.
EFFECTIVE DISCIPLINE - Discipline means to teach. Effective discipline helps children learn how to get on with others so they can
become socially integrated, personally fulfilled members of our community. Discipline involves teaching children sound reasons for
acceptable behaviour so they learn to respect another’s rights, while maintaining their self-respect, self-worth and happiness.
Discipline therefore is not about punishment. It comes through love, attention, reward and encouragement. Effective discipline
helps a child learn self-control, how to deal with BIG feelings, to express emotions appropriately and to learn to take responsibility for
emotions.
Many parents recognise that strategies used when we were young are no longer appropriate. We need to learn different skills which
reflect the needs of our children and the society they are growing into. Research has provided us with a greater understanding of
effective parenting practices, and legislation now supports families finding non-punitive ways of guiding a child’s behaviour. One
large study revealed that the more parents spanked their children for antisocial behaviour, the more the antisocial behaviour
increased. The more children are hit, the more they are likely to hit others, including peers, siblings, and as adults, they are more
likely to hit their spouses.
The effectiveness of discipline comes through a child experiencing copious quantities of love. Children need to know they are an
absolute necessary part of their family, no matter what. From this basis parents can guide their child through setting limits and carry
out consequences, while ensuring their child’s sense of self is intact.
STUDENT ABSENCE - WE expect all children to be at school every day. The correlation between high attendance and student
achievement is impossible to ignore. Our motto is: “EVERY DAY COUNTS”. The important message here for parents is that every
time your child is absent from school it is costing your child a learning experience. The table inserted shows that even moderate
attendance at 85% can add up over time. Remember “EVERY DAY COUNTS” when it comes to student attendance.

8:20am and finishes at 2:35pm. Please ensure your children
arrive and are collected on time.
ABSENTEE NOTIFICATIONS – Did you know that you can
now notify the school of a student’s absence via email?
Simply send an email to: [email protected]
giving us the name of the student, their class, the dates they
will be absent and the reason for their absence.
Alternatively you should ring the office on:
4421 2333 to notify us of any student absences.
SCHOOL GATES – Our school gates will now be locked from
9:00am. Access to school grounds will only be via the
administration entrance.

Sight word and spelling word support
Help your child grow their word knowledge by trying one of
these activities with their spelling words or sight words to
gain automaticity.
I will provide 3 new activities each week.
Cut them out and glue then into an exercise book and
choose a different activity each afternoon and enjoy your
time together.

each letter of your word….then they can do it to

returning to the school for valuable resources. Please note we
have a limited number of books so please get in quickly.

Garden Stall
At our “Aitkenvale Community Country Fair” the P&C
will be holding a garden stall.
We are seeking donations of seeds or clippings to
establish plants which will be sold at our stall. If you
are able to assist with a donation or have a greenthumb please contact our Fundraising Coordinator,

If you have not received your letter to receive some tickets
please see your class teacher or the school office. And don’t
forget tickets and all money (including all unsold tickets) must
be returned to the office

Green Guardians
We would like to welcome the Green Guardians for 2016!
These students are Ryan M, Kuy D, Chenoa W, Rachelle B, Latisha S,
Cameron R, Paige S, Hannah B, Medini S, Rheegan E and Mithag T.
For the first time we are also welcoming a junior Green Guardian
Dwight W.
This year we are planning big things for the Green Guardians. We have
an excited bunch of Guardians ready to work hard to develop
environmental sustainability within our school environment. So far we
have begun a straw wrapper and straw collection competition with
classes ending with a pizza party for the winning class. We have also
begun working in the greenhouse and beginning to propagate plants that
we hope will be ready for sale at our school fete.
We look forward to keeping you up to date with Green Guardian news
throughout the year!

EALD NEWS
EALD unit this week: We are looking at creating procedures, which has
meant a great deal of cooking, planting and making things. Students
have jumped on board with the learning journeys in classrooms and
are able to discuss with visitors what we are doing and what a
procedure is.
We have also welcomed Mrs Charly Bietzel as the new EALD 1B
teacher. She has created a lovely warm environment for students and
this is evident with the smiles and learning occurring within her
classroom. We will be sad to see Mrs Karen Firth heading off this week
for maternity leave and we all wish her the best of luck with her two
bundles of joy due in the next few weeks!

Empowering our children and young people to make
safer and healthier choices through education
Dear Parents
Your school has chosen to partner with Life Education and Communities for Children, to enhance and
reinforce your child’s learning about nutrition, the benefits of physical activity, staying safe online, the health
impacts of smoking and alcohol, and strategies to cope with peer and social pressures.
Life Education is a health promotion charity, and is about prevention through education – providing your
child with important knowledge, skills, confidence and self-esteem to help them live a healthy, safe life.
Our mobile classrooms make the program accessible, exciting and memorable. We use up-to-date technology
and teaching methods, and engage the students through interactive games and activities. Healthy Harold, our
much loved mascot, helps to deliver our message to primary school children.
Thanks to funding received by Communities for Children your child will receive this program at no cost.
The van will be visiting our school from 20 – 31 May. Please complete the below form if you do not want your
child to attend this free program and return it to your child’s classroom teacher. (Forms also available from
the school office).
