The following information is from the ACARA website. The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been an everyday part of the school calendar since 2008. NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. The assessments are undertaken nationwide, every year, in the second full week in May. NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four areas (or ‘domains’) of: reading writing language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) numeracy. NAPLAN tests skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time through the school curriculum. You can find an easy to understand infographic that gives useful information on the NAPLAN tests and their benefits here ( 810KB). To get a sense of the ‘look and feel’ of the tests and to understand what types of questions are asked, a full set of example NAPLAN tests is available. For more information about the move to deliver NAPLAN in a computer-based environment, go to NAPLAN online. CYBERSAFETY AT CHELSEA PRIMARY SCHOOL Digital Licence The students in year 6 are on their way to getting a Digital Licence. The eSmart Digital Licence has been designed for use in environments where children learn and play, to support and celebrate digital inclusion and online knowledge for the whole community - at home, at school and at the library. Grade 6 students can access the Digital Licence for free in 2015 courtesy of Google. The eSmart Digital Licence is a fun way for children to prove their knowledge about using technology and being safe online. It includes questions on mobile phones, social networking, viruses and spam, email, dealing with trolls, sending images, and lots, lots more. The ultimate aim is for them to earn their ‘Digital Licence’ by passing all 8 modules. The Over the past two decades, our lives have been transformed by a digital revolution, opening up a world of possibilities. Children are the greatest beneficiaries of the digital era and are learning to navigate the online world at a much younger age. However exploring the World Wide Web is not without risk. When interacting in online environments, children need to be educated on what to do if they are exposed to ageinappropriate content; encounter cyber bullying; or when they might be putting their privacy at risk. Cybersafety Information Night I am happy to announce that we have been successful in our application to the eSmart parent workshop held at Chelsea Primary School this year on Thursday 12th November, free of charge. This program can normally cost upwards of $5,000! The program has been developed due to huge demand, with the intention of supporting schools along their eSmart journey. The program aims to Educate, Protect and Empower the community. They will cover things such as: • • • • • • What do we mean by ‘digital literacy’ and ‘digital safety’. What are kids doing online/popular sites. Technology from a teens perspective. Creating home rules/boundaries/acceptable use; making informed decisions. Where to seek help/advice. What legalities are involved with online behaviours Cybersafety Committee We are currently creating a Cybersafety Committee at Chelsea Primary School. Please see Mrs. Sewell if you would like to be a member of the team which will comprise of staff and parents. The team will be involved in the planning and organisation of the Cybersafety Night and promoting Cyber Safety at Chelsea Primary. MEDIA LEADERS Bike Ed Hello, Daisy and Robbie again! This week we are taking the opportunity to tell you all about Bicycle Education. This week the students in Year 4 participated in a four day intensive Bike Ed course with Miss Smith. Bike Ed is delivered in schools and community settings. The program helps children aged 9 to 13 years develop the skills they need to ride safely and independently on roads and paths. The program involves a mix of practical activities conducted off-road (in the school grounds) and on-road (on local roads) together with classroom activities. The Bike Ed Instructor's Manual is the key component of Bike Ed. The manual consists of five modules: getting started basic bike skills building skills for riding in traffic riding on paths and riding on-road Special thanks to Sue Bray, Chris Johnstone and parent helpers for volunteering their time to help with the program. Here are the sports reports from last week, tomorrow’s game is an away game against Seaford Primary School. Come along and cheer on our team of champions. SOCCER A Friday mornings are our favourite morning of the week because our favourite coach, Mr Kenner, takes us for soccer. We played a blinder of a game against Seaford North. Our team work and skills were phenomenal. Our goal scores were Ethan S with one, Kyan with one and me with two. The final scores were 4 zip. It is hard to just pick one winner in a team of champions so I will say we were all the best players this week. Brodie B SOCCER B Today the Soccer B team took on Seaford North. Jordan scored the first goal of the match but sadly that was our only score in the first half. Seaford North just kept scoring one goal after another. WE didn’t think we’d be able to score another goal but in the end Brodie came to the rescue and scored a quick goal. The final score was 11-2. Jordan E was definitely our best player this week. Caleum S NETBALL A I can’t even begin to describe how exciting the game was against Seaford North for the Netball A team. The half time scores were 3 to 7, we were leading. But in the second half the Seaford North team came out with both guns blazing and scored 4 quick goals. The scores were level and then we went goal for goal. The scores were 8 all, then 9 all, then with only a few seconds to go we scored again. The final scores were 10 to 9 in our favour. I was so happy to hear that final siren and see the umpire placing two hands in the air signalling the end of the game. Mikaylah NETBALL B Today we played our second game of netball, for some of us it was only our second game ever. The Seaford North team were strong and played a fantastic game. Unfortunately we lost by a lot but we had a fantastic game. Ethan H got his first goal which was really exciting for all of us. The best player this week was definitely Toni. Willow T-BALL Today the super-duper t-ball team visited Seaford north of the second game of the season. The weather was blisteringly cold and some of us couldn’t feel our fingers by the end because they were that numb! We won the first and last inning. And we drew in the second inning. We all had an absolutely fantastic match. The team agreed that Aaron was player of the match getting two people out and making a homerun. I can’t wait for next week’s hopefully amazing match.
