The String Orchestra Series allows
advanced orchestra students to play
quality repertoire that will challenge them.
Students will encounter advanced shifting,
rhythms, keys, and bowings through
original pieces and classical arrangements.
Dear Teachers,
Our 2016 orchestra release contains a great
variety of music for both reinforcing technique
in the classroom and performing concerts
throughout the year. We have new works from
established composers like Doug Spata, Kirt
Mosier, and Jeffrey Bishop along with some new
composers who have a fresh approach to share
with today’s orchestra teachers. I’m especially
excited about “Momentium,” by British composer
Paul Barker. This work will bring a powerful
sound to your ensemble while showcasing one
of your talented violinists.
Our String Orchestra Series features a superb
multi-movement arrangement of “Carmen
Suite” featuring three of my favorite movements:
Aragonaise, Habanera, and Les Toreadors.
In addition, we are offering our first ever “multilevel” work for your next pyramid concert. Use
“The Three Knights’ Quest” as an unforgettable
finale with your elementary through high school
orchestras. The Achievement series features a
variety of well-written pieces for both high school
and middle school orchestras. We are pleased to
offer a newly-engraved 20th Year Commemorative
edition of Kathy Fishburn’s “Celtic Suite.” Our Early
Achievement series is perfect for second year
orchestras looking for quality works. Your students
will love playing “Rosintown Rock.” Use the drum
and piano parts to really rock out in performance!

Momentium is a powerful original concert work utilizing
driving rhythms and harmonies laced with irresistible
suspensions and includes an emotional solo for violin in
the middle section. Add driving orchestral percussion and
fiery ostinatos and you have a superb choice for concerts.

Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” Track 2
(First Movement)
Antonin Dvorak/Brian Holmes.
Inspired by Dvorak’s visit to the New World, original
melodies are found throughout the work and are
masterfully crafted to create a powerful portrayal of the
region. This arrangement of the first movement carefully
preserves much of the original elements while condensing
instrumentation down to a string orchestra format with
optional timpani.
Fleetwing
Track 3
Doug Spata.
Fleetwing is a soaring concert overture featuring shimmering ostinatos, chromatic harmonies, bold accents, and
bracing grace note runs. Melodies pass fluidly between
sections of the orchestra before the central development
section breaks the motifs down and introduces a greater
degree of part independence. The main themes then
regroup and culminate in an exciting, satisfying finish.
On the Pilgrim’s Road
Track 4
Jeffrey S. Bishop.
This exciting work for string orchestra features thematic
material taken from songs of the 12th - 14th century
Pilgrim Road to Jerusalem. Technically demanding, the
driving thematic materials of the opening and closing
sections alternate between arco melodies and pizzicato
countermelodies. The middle, plaintive section balances
the outer frenetic sections. It’s a unique piece that works
equally well for winter and spring concerts.

Carmen Suite
Track 5
Georges Bizet/arr. Todd Parrish.
This three-movement suite of Bizet’s megahit “Carmen”
is carefully arranged to work well with your high school
string orchestra. Each movement is musically interesting
and preserves the passion of the original score. Use the
optional percussion part for added intensity.

Romance in G Major Track 7
(for Two Solo Violins and String Orchestra)
Ludwig van Beethoven/arr. Robert McCashin.
Beethoven’s Romance in G Major was originally penned
as a solo violin work with orchestra. In this arrangement,
Robert McCashin has craftily reworked it for two violins
and string orchestra. It maintains the entirety of the solo
line (creatively shared by the two soloists) as well as the
full “Beethoven sound” in the orchestration. The greatest
benefit provided by this arrangement is that it is now
much more accessible - not only to younger violinists, but
also to the string orchestra setting.
The Three Knights’ Quest Track 8
(Featuring parts for three levels:
Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced)

This piece is specifically designed for a combined concert
with ensembles from the elementary, middle, and high
school levels. The Three Knight’s Quest is intended to have
flexibility and creativity for each particular performance.
You can assign each orchestra “knight” a color based
upon school colors. This can be a great opportunity for
student input on how to characterize each knight in order
to make it more personally applicable for them.

Symphony No. 104 Finale

This exuberant finale from Symphony No. 104 is Haydn at
his best. The memorable theme is given to each section,
and edits were made to give high school orchestras the
best sound possible. Introduce your students to this
master symphony writer to help reinforce classical style,
bow technique, shifting, and dynamics.
Master of Disguise

Brent D. Smith.
This original work is a tribute to the life of Monsignor Hugh
O’Flaherty who played a significant role in saving the lives
of Jews and Allied prisoners during World War II. Due
to his ability to out-fox frequent traps laid by the Nazis,
O’Flaherty was nicknamed the Scarlet Pimpernel of the
Vatican. Performers should swing the rhythm throughout
the piece using a traditional jazz-waltz style. The drum
set and piano parts add even more interest to the piece.
Waltz of the Wicked
Track 6

This wild piece calls for violins and violas to use a onefinger glissando creating a very eerie effect. Cellos will
get to strum three-note chords with their thumb while
canonic passages make your group work together as
never before. Wicked!
Magic Flute Overture
Track 11
W.A. Mozart/arr. Robert McCashin.
In the final three years of Mozart’s life he suffered many
disappointments, and had, in his final year, fallen gravely
ill. So, the success of this comedic opera brought him
not only substantial happiness and joy, but also success.
This abbreviated version of this overture retains all the
thematic material, harmonic substance and sound of
Mozart’s original work, making it accessible to the string
orchestra medium!

Storm the Castle

Track 12
The driving beat of this work suggests the journey and
struggle to overcome as the violins come in with the main
theme. The bass and celli pick up an augmented version
of this theme to keep the pulse racing. The mysterious
lyrical middle section is excellent for bow control and
working on sound and vibrato. The piece journeys back
to a triumphant ending with the original theme layered
throughout the orchestra.

Mountain Hymn

You can almost hear the choir in the background as you
listen to the sentimentally beautiful Mountain Hymn. The
piece is dedicated to the composer’s two nieces who
came from Mexico to be baptized at a small church near
her home in the Ecuadorian highlands. This work will
give young musicians practice with lyrical playing and
expressive dynamics, all within a piece in D major that falls
very easily on young musicians’ fingers.

Neon Beat

Designed with early-intermediate orchestras in mind, Neon
Beat is a fun selection with a modern sound that will rock
your next concert. It features great practice for dotted
rhythms, basic syncopation, and second-finger pattern,
but students will respond most to the big beats and catchy
melodies. Add the optional drum kit part and it will bring
down the house!

Legends of Glory features a majestic theme that weaves
through contrasting sections in the key of E minor. As
ancient voices recall tales of forgotten glory, a sacred
moment of reflection gives way to a stormy battle in the
cello and bass section, building to a victorious key change
to A minor. With just a little third position in first violin, it’s
an accessible and exciting work for developing players!
Eine Kleine Nachtsmusik Track 16
(First Movement)
W.A. Mozart/arr. Robert D. McCashin.
Eine Kleine Nachtmusik was written near the end of
Mozart’s short life (1787) as a four-movement serenade for
chamber strings. Although it wasn’t even published until
more than 25 years after his death, it has become one of
his most-performed works. This easy arrangement will
allow young string players to perform this classic.
A Million Miles Away
Francis Caravella.
Track 17
Introduce your young orchestra to a new frontier of
performance with A Million Miles Away! It takes advantage
of the expansive sound of the Lydian mode to depict the
vast reaches of outer space. Everyone stays in first position
(except the basses), and the dissonances are quite mild. A
grand chorus will challenge students to exercise good bow
control as they work to achieve the demands of the dynamics.
Symphony No. 5 “Reformation”
(Second Movement)

Full of energetic rhythms, exciting melodies, and lots of
dynamic contrast, this piece will challenge your intermediate orchestra to play with intensity and control. A
great addition to any program, Symphony No. 5 is quality
classical repertoire that is worthy of serious study.
Celtic Suite

Featuring the two folk melodies Bonnie Doon and The
Minstrel Boy, this work is well-written in the Celtic style and
includes an optional harp/piano part.
Bourree
Track 20
George F. Handel/arr. Christina Hans.
Handel’s “Music for the Royal Fireworks” was performed in
1749 for the King of England’s firework display in London.
This approachable arrangement of Bourree in first position
will provide opportunities to practice style and dynamics.
Let this regal-sounding piece add a little “spark” to your
next concert or ceremony.
Christmas in the Renaissance

Traditional/arr. Robert A. Curry.
Christmas in the Renaissance is a composition for
holiday concerts unlike standard fare. It uses three songs
originating during the Renaissance: Riu, Riu, Chiu; Dadme
Albricias Hijos d’Eva and Ding, Dong Merrily on High.
Riu, Riu and Dadme are Spanish villancicos found in a
collection published in Venice in 1556. Ding, Dong is a
branle (dance) first seen in Orchesographie published
in 1588. All three songs began their lives as dances,
so the music should be light and energetic. Every part
has interesting music to play. The percussion part adds
to the character of the music, so do not omit it unless
absolutely necessary.

Christmas Serenade

This wonderful arrangement for beginning orchestra
combines both Silent Night and The First Noel. Set in
D major, it has been arranged so that violin, viola, and
cello sections use only the D and A strings, while the bass
section uses just the G and D strings. This fundamental
arrangement is free of slurs and dotted rhythms yet still
retains the spirit and charm of the original carols.

residence of Sherlock Holmes. The three musical motifs

after dark. This macabre work provides the sounds,

Andante con Moto from “Symphony No. 5”

Beethoven’s captivating melody that begins this Andante
is one of the most famous cello/viola melodies ever
written. This “strings-only” edition allows the ensemble
to experience even more of Beethoven’s melodic genius,
while evening-out some of the complexities of the original
opus. The result is a respectful look at the German master
that developing groups and their audiences will enjoy.
Opening with a catchy theme, this work explores
countermelodies as well as recurrences of the theme.
Syncopated rhythms are common and are aided by
running eighth notes that help subdivide the pattern. It’s
a powerful, technically challenging work that students will
love to play.
Capriccio Espagnol

This resetting for string orchestra has successfully kept
the composer’s intent, and to a great extent, the sounds
and colors of the original orchestration. While requiring
some substantial string forces, it’s fully approachable by
quality high school groups. It consists of five connected
movements based on Spanish themes. A terrific addition
as a primary work for any concert!
Concerto Grosso, Op. 6, No. 1

Following the rhythmically captivating yet lyrical Giusto
movement comes a boisterous and lively Allegro.
Both movements are drawn from Handel’s celebrated
Op. 6 collection and provide opportunities for all players
in the ensemble.

Dedicated to the troops serving overseas, this highly
charged work is heroic, dramatic and full of suspense! The
excitement builds as the running sixteenth notes depict

transforms the beauty of the second movement of
Vivaldi’s famous Winter Concerto and weaves it into the

Prelude on an Early American Folk Hymn

First published in 1984, this new 30th anniversary
commemorative edition revisits the tranquil setting of the
American folk hymn My Shepherd Will Supply My Need.

The winner of the 2008 Texas Orchestra Directors
Association composition contest! This American tour de
force has shades of Copland mixed with exciting fiddling
motives and themes fit for a Hollywood western. The
composer describes it: “The Snake River flows through
Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and I tried to capture some of
its grandeur in the music. The ‘stomp’ comes from the
heavy hoedown feel in cut time. It’s written in a rondo
form, and its themes have a familiar style that is easy to
capture. Students will love the fact that each string part is
interesting and unique.”
Spy Games

This exciting piece pays homage to the many novels,
films, and television programs that have centered on
the subject of espionage. The work is based around two
catchy melodies that make use of swung rhythms. These
melodies, coupled with a five-four meter, create a unique
and memorable feel. Spy Games won the 2014 Texas
Orchestra Directors Association composition contest.

You can’t miss with this wonderfully dark and mysterious
Spanish dance. The sultry harmonies and tasteful
backgrounds bring a most appealing and unbelievable air
of intrigue that’s not often found in string literature.
Not just for the viola section! Both violins and violas get
the exuberant melody in this very playable Baroque
classic. Violists will appreciate the opportunity to showcase the beauty and power of their instrument. This
solid arrangement is a great opener for both concerts
and contests.

Written in the traditional tango style, this work gives each
section a chance to shine with many opportunities for
stylistic playing. Students will develop bow control to
sustain phrases and practice going from arco to pizz. The
syncopated rhythms are easily taught and fun to learn.

Just like clouds moving overhead, this light, airy piece
moves with effortless fluidity. Parts are interconnected

Here is a set of three stylistically different pieces that
are perfect for your students’ first concert. Pizzicato
Party utilizes the pizzicato style on open strings with the
occasional addition of the first finger. Noah’s Arc again
uses open strings, this time with the bow. Suite Sweet
Slurs introduces slurring of notes in groups of two over
a light, sweet melody. Whether performed separately or
together as a longer suite, these pieces will provide a nice
addition to your concert programming.
Written with the second-year string player in mind,
this work shares the majestic theme throughout the
orchestra. Students will reinforce basic articulations
using only quarter and eighth notes. An excellent spring

repetition along with contrasting dynamics and articulations make this piece easy to learn yet interesting for all
beginning players.
Shortnin’ Bread Blues

Here is a great way to introduce your young string
orchestra to the blues and swing style applied to an
American folk song they will already know. The walking bass line really adds to the bluesy flavor. A nice
addition to your spring concert programming!

Spanish for “elated joy and happiness,” Alegria is
propelled by accented, syncopated eighth-note patterns.
Each section takes its turn playing the accented

tranquil middle section, the work ends with a joyous,
rhythmic punch!
The dark, minor sound of this piece, coupled with the
pizzicato effects depicting rain, make this an interesting
programmatic work for strings! All sections have a chance
at the melody. It is easy to put together while sounding
rich and satisfying.

From the hard-driving rhythms to the almost comical
pizzicato section, this work has a buoyancy and playful
character reminiscent of Saturday morning cartoons. The

Pastoral Symphony

The first movement of the Pastoral Symphony depicts
the composer’s “awakening of cheerful feelings upon
arrival in the countryside.” This arrangement, intended
for the second-year student, keeps Beethoven’s timeless
melodies while remaining in first position.
Pioneer Sky

This original work uses “blue” notes, jazzy riffs, and an
ostinato bass line (lower strings) to build to a nice full
sound. A conductors’ favorite, newly revised for 2015.

originally for concert band, is now rescored by the
composer for Full Orchestra. Kirkpatrick Fanfare has
an Irish flair, including strains of Danny Boy. The driving
rhythms and power of this dramatic work will be an
exciting addition to any concert.
Csardas

This famous violin showpiece sounds great as a full
orchestra work! Although written by Italian Vittorio
Monti, this well-loved work is regularly played by Gypsy
orchestras throughout Hungary, Romania and Eastern
Europe. The csardas is a Hungarian dance originating
from the music played in the csarda, a tavern in farming
villages. There are two sections; a slow lassu section and
a fast friss (“fresh”) section, creating a piece rich in flavor
with equal portions of lyricism and technical brilliance.

Highlighting one of the foundational works for the
serious trombone or euphonium soloist, this edition of
Guilmant’s masterwork provides an accompaniment
with full symphonic forces. It recalls the music of the late

This original work was commissioned and premiered by
the 2004 Texas Music Educators Association Region 18
Junior High Honors Orchestra in Austin, Texas, Lance
Armstrong’s home. It is a tribute to the open air and
excitement of the cross-country bicycle race!

The classic band march, first played in 1904, is finally
available for full orchestra! Based on Norwegian
folksongs, the melodies in this piece are played by all
sections, moving from the winds to the strings and
sometimes doubled. The fanfares in the brass add a very
regal sound. The strings will enjoy the beautiful phrases
in both melody and countermelody roles. This is a fine
addition to the orchestra repertoire!
Warrior’s Run

God of Our Fathers
George Warren/arr. Claude T. Smith.
Claude Smith’s mastery with wind and percussion timbres
is enhanced with a full symphonic string section in this
thrilling arrangement of George Warren’s timeless hymn.
This is the capstone of a patriotic concert that will be
uplifting in both the concert hall and church sanctuary.
This work was commissioned for the inaugural
performance of the Lee’s Summit, Missouri Symphony
Orchestra. It is based on the picture of a warrior running
into battle, as its contrapuntal lines depict the sound of
feet running through the forest to battle.
