he snow is flying here in Colorado, the first resorts are open
(Arapahoe Basin and Loveland), and the ski season is off to
another glorious start.
The Men’s and Women’s Clinics will be going out with an
excellent crowd December 3-9 at Keystone and Winter Park
respectively. These clinics are a great way to begin preparing for
the new ski season, and even though they are only a few weeks
away, it's never too late to sign up if you are still interested.

for the first runs of the new season, as we will be in Winter Park

A Skier’s Muse
A brief history and introduction to the wonderful world of skiing
T
hanks to the Scandinavians for inventing skiing –– this is documented at Norway’s
Holmenkollen Ski Museum as somewhere around four thousand years ago. Slowly
skiing evolved from an efficient method of winter travel and, by the 1700s, had become
both a cross-country and downhill sport. But it wasn’t until the 1930s that downhill
skiing really caught on in Europe.
From ancient times, skis were made of wood. In 1950 a pair of hickory skis weighed
about five pounds. That same year, Howard Head introduced metal skis. They weighed
half as much, turned easier, were faster, and changed the construction of skis forever.
Head stubbornly pursued his vision over a three-year period until he finally overcame
the technical problems. The international racing community adopted the final system,
with a surface layer of rubber to reduce vibration, in 1964. Sales to recreational skiers
soon followed, creating an unchallenged market for Head’s invention.
Ski designs dramatically changed in length and shape throughout the years to
follow. Their length was shortened to five-feet or less and their shape formed a parabolic contour by widely flaring the shovels and tails. To everyone’s delight, these new skis
turned easier and seemed to float on the snow.
Along with modern skis came the demand for improved ski clothing. Of the
man-made fibers, polyester has adapted exceptionally well to these demands. It is
superior to wool and cotton in useful ways: it is lighter in weight; amazingly warm, even
when wet with perspiration; increases warmth by cleverly wicking moisture away from
the body; and conveniently drips-dry overnight. Nowadays, to keep warm on a cold
mountain, a skier can dress in an
entire polyester outfit, except for
the parka’s nylon outer shell
needed to repel water and wind.
Learning to ski can be
humbling, especially for fearful
adults, while children often
forget their fears and learn fast
just by having fun. Though
skiing is a solitary experience, it
draws together like-minded
enthusiasts, a community from
which individuals can gain
confidence.
Difficulty mounts when advanced turns are attempted: The maneuver requires
launching the body into the new direction, out into space. Managing this is possible
only when you overcome your dependence on the beginner technique of leaning into
the hill for balance and security.
When you are ready, the sport of alpine skiing pits the lone skier against the
changing character of the snow. First-tracks through new snow are a rare treat. Usually
before long, skiers wantonly break the smooth, soft, fluffy surface into mounds of packed
snow and hard slippery patches. The altered surface is now an intimidating challenge.
It takes integration of mind and body with Zen-like concentration to ski some slopes.
The ever-changing weather conditions in the mountains are beyond a skier’s
control. When wind velocity gets too high, chair lifts, suspended from thick cables of
woven steel wires, are in danger of jumping pulleys if they swing too widely. Thus skiers,
hunkered down in moving chairs on gusting days, are grateful to reliable lift operators
for safe rides up the mountain.
On blustery days with heavy cloud cover, powdery snowfall, and a drop in
temperature, an extra polyester layer and yellow lenses are helpful. These are special,
stimulating days to ski the mountain. At day’s end skiers are sated, tired, coated with
snow, and may even have icicles hanging from their moustaches.
Skiing is more than sliding down a snow-covered hill: The physical venture
within a frosty environment stirs a powerful sense of wellbeing. Skiing feels like you are
floating down the mountain, effortlessly turning in sequence, secure and confident. It
is a priceless sensation you hunger to repeat. Join me on the OTHGI Aspen trip in
January, the Snowmass trip in March or one of the other trips, and experience fun and
camaraderie for yourself!

Guided Ski Days

S
harpen your skis! Our Over the Hill Gang International ski
guides are getting theirs ready so they can lead our members
around their favorite mountain. Join us for Guided Ski Days, one
of the most popular programs OTHGI offers. It’s a great way to
meet friends to ski with and learn the mountain safely at the same
time.
When you ski with us, no reservation is needed, but please be
at the starting location early enough that you can be properly
placed with a group of similar ability and stamina. Come a few
minutes early, have a cup of coffee, get acquainted and then ski
off with a group that is just right for you.
Please check the Benefits Directory, here or online, for
meeting times, location and also for blackout days. Most guide
programs start in December and don’t operate over
Christmas-New Years; some (but not all) are not available over
Martin Luther King or Presidents Day holidays. Snowmass starts
in early January and Eldora meets once a month.

Experiences of a Blind Skier
Dear Will and Lil,
No, I haven't fallen in a ditch and disappeared. I'm sorry to be so
tardy with telling you about my December 2005 OTHGI Men's Clinic
Adaptive Ski experience at Breckenridge. Simply stated in three words:
IT WAS WONDERFUL! Stephanie Meier is the office manager and
had all of the paper work organized when I walked in the door. The office
was relatively easy to find, close to the base of the new Beaver Run lift
on Peak 9. I arrived two days early to try to get used to the altitude. I
highly recommend this for a sea level person going to 10K feet.
My first day of skiing was Monday. I met my instructor at 8:30 AM,
and he took me two blocks down town to the equipment rental shop to
get my skis and poles. The shop was well equipped with new K2 shaped
skis in all lengths. They fitted my boots and off we went! I had requested to ski in the mornings, so we took the new Beaver
Run 6 passenger chair up the mountain. Joe had both of us wearing Blind Skier vests; his said “BS Guide – Bob Sloan,
Blind Skier.”
At the top of the lift we talked about where I would like him to ski,
in front or behind me. Since I had never been on this hill before I elected for him to ski ahead of me to pick the entry to the main slope. He
was very careful and constantly looked back to check on me. When we
arrived on the clear slope he again questioned me about what I could
see and where I wanted him to ski. I elected behind me so that I could
set the speed down the hill. We stopped twice on our way to the bottom so I could catch up with the thin air, got in line and went back up.
Once more and the morning was finished. Joe took me into the locker
room and found my locker for me. In went the skis and poles; out
came the key. We could not have lunch together as he had to prepare
for his afternoon lesson.
Wednesday was my next day to ski and we repeated Monday with the exception that we took a different lift to the top of
Peak 9. We skied all morning and again quit at noon. I decided not to ski either Thursday or Friday so Joe returned my skis to
the rental shop for me.
The trip was attended by a fine group of gentlemen, all of whom included me in their groups. Our clinic trip host, Bob
Bernstein, became an instant best friend. He introduced me to the "normal" participants, got me the best seat on the bus and
made what could have been difficult situations easy. This trip wouldn't have been as much fun without his help.
That's about it. Thank you for taking a chance with me as your initial adaptive skier. The Breckenridge Outdoor Education
Center group is top notch. Joe was a perfect companion and guide. I am planning to be back this year.
