The Program consists of a 128-member Marching Band (Marching Sound of Class), University Basketball “Pep” Band, and Symphonic Wind Ensemble. The band provides “edutainment” at university sporting events, pep rallies, student sponsored events, ceremonies and special occasions, both on campus and abroad. The Marching Sound of Class was selected as the 2013 CIAA Band of the year, and was featured at the CIAA Education Day in Charlotte, NC as part of the CIAA Tournament. The band has also been featured in the HBCU Calendar (2013-2014), representing the month of September. The program is under the leadership of Mrs. Tomisha Brock, Director of Bands, and Mr. Joplin Brock, Assistant Director of Bands. Requirements to Join To join the ECSU Band Program, you must be a full time student at Elizabeth City State University or the College of the Albemarle. In addition, you must have a 2.5 GPA. If you are interested in applying for a band scholarship, you must have a minimum 2.7 GPA. Membership is open to all instrumentalists with a true desire and passion for band. Auxiliary and Drumline Students interested in joining the Allure Auxiliary Squad (flag/color guard, dancer, twirler/majorette, banner), and those interested in joining the P.O.I.S.O.N. Drumline will be required to complete a training clinic and audition process. Interest meetings will be held on campus in February; however, students expressing an interest can do so via email or in person. Auditions for both groups will be held in April and May. More details to come. Scholarship Requirements – Non-Music Majors Non-music majors may be eligible for a General Band Scholarship if they have a minimum 2.7 GPA and complete a performance audition. The audition will consist of the performance of scales (Major and Chromatic), a prepared piece (of the student’s choice), and sight-reading excerpts (provided by the Director). Students will also need to provide 2 letters of reference, in which one must come from a current or former band director or music teacher. Scholarship Requirements – Music Major Candidates Students planning to major in music may be eligible for both a General Band Scholarship and a music scholarship from the Department of Visual and Performing Arts. In addition to successfully being admitted to ECSU, scholarship candidates will need to complete a performance audition, with the same criteria as listed in the previous section. Candidates will also need to complete a Music Theory Placement Exam. The audition will determine admission into the department, and the placement exam will determine placement in the Theory Course sequence. www.ecsu.edu
