Charlea Estes
A Kimberling City woman is in jail in Barry County
on charges for intentionally crashing her car with her
three-month old baby as a passenger. The wreck occurred on
Missouri 112 about five miles
east of Seligman on Saturday,
February 20.
According to the affidavit of probable cause by Missouri State Trooper T. Coffey,
Rebecca Rae Dempsey, 30,
wrecked her car on purpose
and her baby flew out of the
vehicle onto the road. She is
being charged with three felonies: abuse of a child, assault in
the first degree and endangering the welfare of a child, and
two misdemeanors, careless
and imprudent driving and
failure to drive on the right
half of the roadway.
Trooper Coffey interviewed witnesses at the scene
who said that Dempsey was
not caring for the child when
they arrived or at any point after the crash. The witnesses on
the scene picked the baby up
off the ground and wrapped
her in a coat to keep her warm.
When Trooper Coffey
interviewed Dempsey, she
claimed that she has “lost her
mind.” The wreck had been
intentional and Dempsey
told Coffey, “I wanted to die
and I was like aggravated I
didn’t die.” Upon inspection,
the speedometer’s needle was
stuck at 92 miles per hour after the crash, indicating that
Dempsey was going 92 miles
per hour in a 55 mile per hour
zone at the time of the crash.
When Coffey informed
Dempsey that she might not
be able to have further contact with her baby, Dempsey
seemed to be indifferent.
The baby was transported
to Mercy Hospital in Rogers,
Ark., by ambulance before being flown to Mercy Hospital in
Springfield. The baby suffered
from two lateral skull fractures.
Dempsey was placed on
a 96-hour psychiatric hold
by Mercy Hospital in Rogers,
Ark. Dempsey was not intoxicated at the time of the crash,
and she said that she was on
medication for being bipolar
at the scene.
In an interview with
Dempsey’s father, he told Coffey that she had some “mental” problems and that she had
never wanted the child. According to her father, she had
been impregnated as a result of
rape but had to keep the child
and not have an abortion in
order to continue to live at her
mother’s house. According to
the report, “Rebecca decided
to keep the baby in exchange
for a place to live.”
Demsey’s baby was to be
placed in alternative care according to her Barry County
case worker.
Dempsey is being held on a
$75,000 cash-only bond.
forced her into the trunk of
her car. The brothers used
her debit card to withdraw
$1,125 from three different
ATMs in Berryville, Ark.
The brothers struck
the victim in the face before throwing her down a
hill on Farm Road 1180 in
Eagle Rock and abandoning her car, a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu, in the Roaring
River arm of Table Rock
Lake. The victim had to
walk a mile barefoot to get
help after the incident.
Michael,
Mathew,
their other brother, Marc,
Marc’s girlfriend, Shelby
Keeler, and Michael’s girlfriend, Amanda Rhodes, of
Pittsburgh, Pa., were also
charged in the case. However, charges against Marc
and his girlfriend, Shelby
Keeler, were dropped.
Rhodes still faces the same
charges as Michael and
Mathew.
Michael Miller pled
guilty to felonious restraint
and tampering with a motor
vehicle in the first degree.
Miller was sentenced to
seven years on each charge,
which will run consecutively, not concurrently,
meaning he was sentenced
to 14 years incarceration.
According to Barry County
Prosecuting Attorney Amy
Boxx, the other two charges were only misdemeanors and were dropped for a
guilty plea. She added, “His
more serious charges were
in McDonald County because it ended up that the
woman’s home was in McDonald County, not Barry.”
Miller also faced charges in McDonald County for
the kidnapping. Miller was
sentenced to 18 years for
kidnapping, 15 years for
burglary in the first degree
and seven years for tampering with a motor vehicle
in the first degree.
Miller’s sentence in Barry County is to run concurrently with the sentencing in McDonald County
as well a five year incarceration sentence on other
charges related to a Barry
County burglary in 2013.
Michael’s
brother,
Mathew,
requested
a
change of venue for his
case. Mathew will face the
same initial charges of felonious restraint, tampering
in the first degree, assault
in the third degree and
fraudulent use of a credit
device in Stone County.
Rhodes has requested a
jury trial and has a pre-trial conference scheduled for
April 18 in front of Barry
County Judge Jack Goodman.
Trivia night raises $1,262 for education fund

Monett woman arrested for meth distribution
Charlea Estes
The Cassville Police
Department arrested a
Monett woman on Thursday, March 3, after she was
found passed out behind
the steering wheel of her car
in the Payless Rental parking lot on Old Exeter Road,
according the affidavit of
probable cause.
Trisha Jean Hileman, 30,
of Monett, was charged with
possession of a controlled
substance, two counts of
possession of a controlled
substance with the intent to
distribute and unlawful use
of drug paraphernalia.
When Cassville Police
Officer Danny Boyd found
Hileman, she also had a
glass pipe in the front passenger’s seat. There was
also a Crown Royal bag
which contained digital
scales, small plastic baggies, straws, bags with
methamphetamine residue
and 28 small round blue
pills that were later identified as Clonazepam, which
is brand name Klonapin.

County of burglary and
stealing.

SAFETY INSPECTIONS
Two injured
in four car
wreck
Charlea Estes
Two people were injured
in a four-car crash on MO37 about a mile north of
Purdy on Thursday morning, March 3, around 7:55
a.m.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol
crash report, four cars were
involved in the crash: a 1999
Dodge Ram driven by Larry
J. McLeod, 66, of Purdy, a
2007 Hyundai Accent driven by Brittany L. Sanchez,
19, of Cassville, a 2001 Ford
F150 driven by Brett M. Rapien, 42, of Cassville, and a
2015 Nissan Altima driven
by Rebecca A. Bartlett, 57,
of Garfield, Ark.
McLeod attempted to
avoid a collision and struck
Sanchez’s car, which caused
her to hit Rapien’s F150.
The fourth car driven by
Bartlett ran off the roadway
to avoid the other cars and
was struck by McLeod.
Rapien and Bartlett were
each taken to Mercy Hospital in Cassville by ambulance for minor injuries.
McLeod and Sanchez had
no reported injuries at the
time.
All drivers involved in
the crash were wearing
seat belts at the time of the
wreck.

Longtime grocery store
Ramey’s got a makeover,
revamped products and
a name change last week.
Ramey’s, now called Price
Cutter like the company’s
others stores, has been remodeled inside to accommodate new foods, a salad
bar and more.
Larry Hayward, executive vice president for Price
Cutter stores, has been in
the store in the past weeks,
overseeing that interior remodel and change in many
of the departments, most
claim for the better. Hayward said, “The store is
more in line with our Price
Cutter vision now, so we
made the name change.”
Hayward said the main
motivator for the changes
are to satisfy customers
who are looking for healthier options.
Cassville shoppers can
now run in a grab a salad
at the fresh salad bar in the
front of the store or one of
the over 1,000 natural and
organic items now offered
by the store. However, one
of the things some customers will miss is the pharmacy, which was closed
to make room for the new
salad bar, as well as other
departments. Hayward said
that it was to meet customer needs.
“By taking out the pharmacy, we were given the
room to expand the other
departments in the store.
We already have two great
hometown
pharmacies,
and it just wasn’t needed at
this store,” he said.
Hayward went on, “If it
wasn’t in Cassville, that’s
why we made these decisions, to provide more options.”
He said the same for the
dollar aisle that has been removed during the change.
Hayward stated, “I’ve had
several people ask why we
took out the dollar section,
and it’s because you have
other stores here that satisfy that need. There is a

Men and women over 50
who are considering returning to school may be eligible for financial assistance
through various programs.
According to the American
Association of Retired Persons, older men and women
who want to go back to school
do not necessarily have to
bankroll that expenditure on
their own. AARP notes that
the Internal Revenue Service offers tax breaks such as
the American Opportunity
Tax Credit and the Lifetime
Learning Tax Credit that older students can take advantage of to lessen the blow of
tuition costs, which have risen considerably since today's
men and women over 50 were
in college. Older men and
women may also be able to
take advantage of 529 college
savings accounts they opened
for their children that their
kids did not end up needing.
AARP also notes that men
and women over 50 who want
to apply for financial aid must
be prepared to enroll in more
than one class and in more
than just a continuing education program. More information is available at aarp.org.

Ward leads Hartville past Purdy in Class 2 quarterfinals
Lee Stubblefield
The Purdy Eagles, just
one game short of reaching
the final four plateau in Class
2 boys basketball, fell short
in their quest. Purdy lost to
Hartville on Saturday in the
O'Reilly Center at Drury
University in Springfield, 7148.
For those not familiar
with Hartville, the first player that jumps out at you from
their roster is Cody Kelley,
the 6-8 sophomore center.
Having a 6-8 center in Class
2 is like having a fire truck in
a water fight. But Kelley was a
non-factor for Hartville this
year. Plagued with injuries
early on, he had season-ending knee surgery weeks ago.
But even in street clothes and
on crutches, he still presents
an imposing figure.
The difference maker
for Hartville this season is
Ryan Ward, the versatile 6-3
senior forward/post. Ward
has enough height to compete with most Class 2 big
men, and the ball skills and
shooting touch to confound
almost anyone in the paint.
Although teammate Grant
Dedmon, a senior guard,
outscored Ward in this game,
24-21, it was Ward who
keyed the Hartville win with
his scoring, rebounding,
shot-blocking, and sheer intimidation.
The Purdy Eagles survived a shootout with Marionville on Wednesday, but
could not find any offensive
rhythm against Hartville.
The Hartville Eagles, dressed
in their road blues, denied
open looks for Purdy's threepoint shooters while Ward
patrolled and controlled the
lane.
Purdy never led in this
game, although the game
was tied at 2-2 and 10-10 in
the first quarter. Ward scored
the game's first points after
a Hartville turnover and a
Purdy offensive foul. Sydney
Birge tied the game with a
pair of free throws, but Hartville jumped in front with a
Deric Jones jumper from the
wing, and a pair of Ward free
throws.
Tyler Keeler dribbled
around and through the
zone to make a 6-4 score,
but Dedmon scored from the
field and the line for a 10-6
Hartville lead. Hunter Cook
scored on a long fastbreak
outlet from Raul Garcia,
ooping the ball off the backboard. Cook scored again
with another fastbreak opportunity, and Purdy had
tied the game at 10-10 with
1:24 on the clock.
Hartville jumped back in
front when Dedmon hit the
first of a pair of free throws,
and Ward rebounded the following miss and scored for
a 13-10 lead. Cook hit again
for Purdy, but Jace Keith's
trey gave Hartville a 16-12
lead at the end of the quarter.
Hartville slammed Purdy
with a 19-1 run to open the
second quarter. The trapping
zone press hurried the whiteclad Eagles into a slew of
turnovers and Hartville converted nearly every opportunity. Tommy Egan called two
timeouts in less than a minute of game time to try and
stop the bleeding.
Ward scored 9 points in
the quarter and Dedmon
added 6 as Hartville tore to
a 39-17 halftime lead. Coach
Reed had his team switch
to a four-corner delay on
offense as soon as the lead
reached 20, and the blue
Eagles found more success
cutting to the basket against
Purdy's spread-out zone.
Jonatan Salazar hit three
jumpers from the field and
Keeler threw in a long triple
as Purdy fought back in the
third quarter. After trailing
by as many as 22 in the first
half, Purdy pulled within
42-26 at the 6:24 mark. But
Ward and Dedmon each
scored 6 points in the quarter, and Jones added 5 as
Hartville rebuilt the lead.
Purdy's Justin LaNore
was whistled for a foul as the
buzzer went off, and Dedmon shot two lonely free
throws to give Hartville a 5835 lead at the final break.
The lead jumped to 30
in less than two minutes of
the fourth quarter. With the
game well in hand, Reed
cleared his bench with 6:11
left to play. Egan left his
starters in for two more
minutes, then he too substituted in a new lineup. It was
good sportsmanship by both
coaches, and allowed the
starters from both teams to
be recognized by their fans.
The game ended with
Hartville on top, 71-48.
Hartville improved to
27-4 and earned a trip to Columbia where the Eagles will
face Wellington in a Class
2 semifinal on Thursday at
1:40 PM in the Hearnes Center. Purdy finished the season
at 20-9.
Purdy scorers: Hunter
Cook, 12; Sydney Birge, 10;
Tyler Keeler, 9; Jonatan Salazar, 8; Raul Garcia, 3; Ricky

umn, and the "7" descriptor
of their turnovers.
The Lady Wildcats fixed
the turnover problem in the
second quarter, and hung
fairly even with CJ, trailing
by 33-17 at half. Hallie Long
connected from long range
in that quarter to match Kandace Wallace's early trey. But
a costly third foul by Devyn
Callahan put the Ladycats in
serious trouble.
CJ opened the third quarter with a 7-2 run, but Cassville responded with a 7-3
run of their own. Long scored
twice in that span, along with
a three-point play by Wallace. But the Lady Bulldogs
tallied the last 5 points of the
quarter. Scott scored at the
rim, and then Sadler finished
her three-point exhibition as
the clock ran down. Cassville
trailed at the final break, 4826.
CJ owned the final quarter, 9-2, with a pair of treys
from Lindsey Showalter and
Lauren Walker. Macey Parsons scored the lone bucket
of the period for Cassville.
The running clock never
came into play, although the
lead stood at 29 for the final
three and half minutes of
play.

Cassville could never
overcome the early deficit. Carl Junction protected
and extended the lead with
deadly shooting and superior board work. Besides only
committing 7 turnovers to
Cassville's 14, CJ won the rebounding battle, 34-22. This
game was very similar to the
58-35 road loss to Carl Junction back on February 1.
The Lady Wildcats finished the season with a 14-13
record, an improvement over
the 12-win season of a year
ago.
"Our schedule was brutal
the last third of the season
and our kids fought hard,"
Cassville's Chris Shore reflected after the loss. "We
probably lost a couple that we
should have won, but we got
two wins late in the year and
locked in a winning season
with a win over McDonald
County in districts."
Cassville scorers: Hallie

The Cassville Lady Wildcats ended their season with
a 57-28 loss to Carl Junction in the semifinals of the
Class 4 District 12 Basketball Tournament at Carthage
on Thursday afternoon. CJ's
Skylar Sadler erupted for 18
points, hitting a half dozen
three pointers to key the
Lady Bulldogs to victory.
This Carl Junction team
is a legitimate powerhouse,
Ranked fourth in the state
in Class 4, the Lady Bulldogs captured the conference
championship in their final
tour of the Big 8. CJ's front
line goes 6-1, 6-0, and 5-10,
and 6-2 Megan Scott comes
off the bench. Sadler, a 5-10
guard/forward, is a matchup
nightmare for opposing defenses.
Cassville had two early
leads at 2-0 and 4-2, but
Sadler popped the upset
bubble with her first trey for
a 7-4 Carl Junction lead. The
Lady Bulldogs raced to a 24-9
lead to finish the quarter, as
Sadler hit three more bombs
from beyond the arc.

Purdy Eagles drive into state quarterfinals
Lee Stubblefield
Who knew that a sectional game with a ho-hum, 9-8
first quarter would turn into
a sizzling shootout? Purdy
and Marionville progressed
from deliberate to destructive in a game that saw 56
points in just the fourth
quarter as the Eagles turned
back the Comets at Nixa on
Wednesday night, 66-61.
Purdy scored 31 of those
points in the last quarter, and
15 of those came from clutch
free throw shooting in the final minutes.
Sydney Birge led Purdy
with 17 points, while Tyler
Keeler, the lone underclassman starting for the Eagles,
chipped in 15. Tanner Wright
and Rane Bateman were tops
for the Comets with 13 each.
The game started slowly,
with the score yawning at
2-2 halfway through the first
quarter. The most significant
play of the opening minutes
came when Jacob LaSalle
rolled an ankle and had to be
helped from the court at the
6:09 mark. LaSalle, an important piece of the Marionville machine, did not return
to action.
A Brandon Horn free
throw in the closing seconds
gave Marionville a 9-8 lead at
the first break.
After slicing and dicing
McAuley's defense with dribble drives and dishes, Purdy
was unable to penetrate
Marionville's excellent zone.
Early on, the Comets seemed
to have the advantage in
quickness and execution. But
Purdy's defense was solid
too, and both teams wasted
scoring opportunities.
Neither team could break
away in the second quarter,
a quarter that saw three lead
changes and three ties. Purdy's biggest lead of the period was three points, and the
Eagles went to halftime with
a 22-19 lead.
When the third quarter
opened, Marionville's Tanner Wright and Purdy's Sydney Birge traded baskets,
but Birge's bomb was worth
an extra point. Purdy held a
25-21 lead with 6:10 on the
clock. Then Marionville exploded with a 10-2 run to
claim a 31-27 lead, and Purdy's Tommy Egan called for
time to choke the momentum swing.
Marionville took a 33-29
lead with :47 left in the quarter, but Purdy came to life
with a run of three pointers
to take control of the game.
Birge, Ricky Aldaba, and
Hunter Cook canned treys
on Purdy's last three possessions of the period to cut the
Marionville lead to 36-35.
Then Birge and Tyler Keeler
opened the fourth quarter
with long threes to boost the
Eagles on top, 41-39.
A scoring frenzy followed,
but though the scoreboard lit
up like a pinball machine, it
continued to read in Purdy's
favor. The senior-laden Eagles lineup would not yield
in a high stakes game of ho-r-s-e, and Purdy snagged a
50-47 lead when Cook jetted
past defenders and flew to a
layup with 3:00 showing on
the clock.
The Marionville student
section adopted a cool superhero theme for this game, but
their Superman costumes
seemed cheap in comparison
to Cook's flight to the basket.
The Eagles continued to
score and stretched to a 5850 lead on a Raul Garcia free
throw with 1:05 remaining.
The Comets went to the
foul-and-hope game early.
Marionville's Paden Grubbs
directed his players to protect the precious seconds
on the clock with a flurry of
fouls, both challenging and
daring the Purdy shooters to
hit the freebies.
The Eagles were up to the
task, and hit 15 of 19 free
throws in the quarter to salt
the game away. Marionville
hit some big shots down the
stretch, but could not close
the gap. Purdy held on to win
a 66-61 game, and gained a
berth in the state quarterfinals for the first time in 25
years.
Purdy scorers: Sydney
Birge, 17; Tyler Keeler, 15; Jonatan Salazar, 10; Luis Cruz,
9; Hunter Cook, 8; Raul Garcia, 7
Marionville scorers: Tanner Wright, 13; Rane Bateman, 13; Lathan Kerans,
12; Cole Brown, 9; Brandon
Horn, 8; Aaron Head, 6
The Eagles improved
to 20-8 on the season and
earned a Saturday date with
Hartville at the O'Reilly Center on the campus of Drury
University in Springfield.
The Eagles fell to Hartville
in the Class 2 quarterfinal
match-up.

Purdy names January Character Education winners
How to make spring
projects more eco-friendly
The arrival of warmer
weather means different things
to different people. Some anticipate opportunities for outdoor fun, while others may be
considering redecorating or
remodeling their homes. For
the latter group, home improvement season provides a great
opportunity to make homes
more eco-friendly.
When planning home improvement projects, it's best
to first choose a project and
then look for ways to make the
project more environmentally
friendly.
Longer days and warmer
temperatures often translate
into wanting to freshen up
the interior of a home. Heavy
draperies and comforters are
put away, and lighter fabrics are
taken out of storage. Whenever
possible, reuse or repurpose
items you already have rather
than purchasing new items.
Longer drapes can be cut and
hemmed to be used as window treatments in other rooms.
Making a patchwork blanket
out of old T-shirts is a crafty
project that makes use of items
that would otherwise be destined for landfills.
If you decide to purchase
some new items, look for products made from sustainable
or organic fabrics. Hemp and
bamboo textiles have grown
in popularity. When replacing
items around the house, donate
older items to a charitable organization.
Spring and summer call
to mind beautiful blooming
plants. Relying on native, sustainable plants is practical, environmentally friendly and costeffective.
According to the National
Wildlife Federation, sustainable plants are native plants.
Native plants sustain local wildlife more effectively than nonnative alternatives, so include
native plants in your sustainable
garden. Native plants also are
less reliant on pesticides and
herbicides to keep them healthy
and viable.
Even though you may be
opening the windows more, indoor plants can filter and purify
indoor air. The NASA Clean
Air Study, led in association
with the Associated Landscape
Contractors of America, found
that certain common indoor
plants naturally remove toxic
agents such as benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene
from the air. Efficient air cleaning is accomplished with at least
one plant per 100 square feet of
home or office space.
Spring cleaning is another
tradition for many families
come the end of winter and
dawn of spring. Many people
use spring as a time to go
through closets and garages to
remove items they no longer use
or need. In an effort to clean up
fast, some people may dispose
of chemical products, paints,
treated lumber, and many other
items in ways that can be damaging to the environment. Runoff from cleaning products used
on home siding or driveways
can leach into the surrounding
soil or find its way into sewage
drains that ultimately direct fluids to public waterways.
Springtime renovation and
cleaning projects provide the
perfect opportunity to adopt
eco-friendly practices that pay
dividends for years to come.
Purdy Elementary Principal Janet Boys annoucned the character education medal winners for the month of January. In partnership with elementary counselor Gary Jurgensen, Purdy’s kindergarten through fourth grade teachers present a different character trait each month. At the end of the month, each teacher nominates one student who best exemplifies the trait presented. These
students receive character medals from Mrs. Boys at a special assembly.
In January, students focused on acceptance. January medal winners are fourth graders Selah Bowers and Melissa Lee; third
graders Randall Kessinger, Kenni DeLeon and Cecilia Encalado; second graders Kate Ozbun, Rose Wilson and Hailey Gower; first
graders Logan Manwarren, Kimberly Canales and Mailen Rodriguez; and kindergartners Shelbie Patterson, Kamilla Rodriguez
and Dhali Wall Lee.
Students are pictured above, from left to right. Front row: Shelbie Patterson; Kamilla Rodriguez; and Dhali Wall Lee. Second
row: Melissa Lee; Logan Manwarren; Rose Wilson; Kimberly Canales; and Mailen Rodriguez. Third row: Randall Kessinger; Kate
Ozbun; Echo the Eagle; Hailey Gower; and Cecilia Encalado. Back row: Gary Jurgensen, Counselor; Kenni DeLeon; and Josh
Hughes, Elementary P.E. Absent from photo: Selah Bowers.
