In the first season, they won more games than the previous two seasons combined; in year two, they collected the first winning season since 2001-02, and produced the most wins in 22 years with a 17-15 mark. “Winning is contagious, but for us, losing was contagious,” said MEAC 2009-10 Coach of the Year Vanessa Blair. “These ladies bought in and they believed they could have something better.” Bethune-Cookman Team Information 2009-10 Overall Record...................17-15 2009-10 MEAC Record........................9-7 2009-10 MEAC Finish ...............T-5th place Starters R/L ........................................4/1 Letterwinners R/L ................................8/6 Newcomers ............................................5 As the Lady Wildcats move past their recent successes, shifting focus to the upcoming season, prospects shine bright. With significant talent, B-CU returns three starters, each having more than two years of productive experience. It’s been a long road from where those players started, as the team is now fully integrated into Blair’s system, and have recruited solid depth behind them. One of the biggest keys in 2010-11 is the air around the program and attitude of the players. “We’ve overcome a defeatist mentality and defeatist culture,” Blair explained, “now these girls have the expectation of winning; not going to games and just playing, but they expect to win every time out.” Of the returning starters, each is a top-five scorer, including the scoring leader of the last two seasons, second team All-MEAC honoree Demetria Frank. Frank wrapped up the year averaging 14.0 PPG, ninth among MEAC scorers. However, her game is not just offense, collecting 96 steals for 3.0 SPG finishing second in the conference and 18th in the NCAA, making 89 assists, and hitting the glass to collect 221 rebounds (6.9 RPG); ranking her 11th among MEAC players though a guard. Frank made some waves in B-CU’s history books, taking over as the career steals leader with 290 (a 26-year old record), and moved into fifth among all-time scorers. In the post, MEAC All-Tournament center Sarah Bolden will have a huge impact on this team’s success in 2010-11. Bolden finished third in scoring for B-CU with 10.1 PPG on 48 percent shooting, led the team in rebounding with 7.5 RBG (7th in MEAC), and collected 26 blocks. Her experience will be a huge key, as she’s improved notably each year on the court. 22 # “We’ll be nailed in the ground by Sarah Bolden,” noted Blair. “We’re looking for her to be a lot more active on offense this year, and continue her great footwork with rebounding.” Fifth on the team in scoring, with 7.6 ppg, point guard Jasmine Daniels is set for her fourth consecutive starting season. Though proven solid in her role as a scoring point guard, she excelled in dishing the ball to her teammates, notching a MEAC third-best 3.9 apg. Coming in from the point, she proved effective in getting after the ball with 3.8 rpg. Jasmine Bugg returns to back up the point position. “She’s asked to put points on the board. The biggest thing is to cut down on our turnovers,” said Blair. Daniels’ role could be altered in 2010-11 early on. Though slated to start at the point, the loss of wing shooter Jalisa Isaac for the season may require her shifting into the outside shooter spot, where she shot 29 percent last season, and Daniels could have a more attacking role offensively. Also filling this role will be point guard Bugg, while transfer Jasmine Elum looks to jump in after semester. It will be a challenge to replace the utility player at forward, Euneshia Proctor, who graduated. Returning from ACL injury, Cleniece Roberts collected 5.8 ppg and 4.8 rpg in 2008-09, but will not be available until semester. Former walk-on Sharnese Neal came on strong late in the season, particularly in MEAC play. Freshman Amanda Hairston, is expected to use her outstanding strength to make an impact early. Sarah Bolden Sr. • 6-1 • Forward MEACsports.com The pieces are in place for the Lady Wildcats to fly even higher than last season, but every player must execute their role. “They have that bar set high for themselves,” said Blair. “Every one of these players has the ability to go in and contribute, and they have to go in every single time knowing that and produce.” 18 2010-11 MEAC Women’s Basketball Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats 2009-10 Statistical Review All Game Statistics RECORD ALL GAMES CONFERENCE NON-CONFERENCE OVERALL (17-15) (9-7) (8-8) ## Player GP GS Min Avg FG TOTAL FGA Pct 3FG 12 20 22 11 03 10 55 25 05 33 24 21 23 FRANK, Demetria ISAAC, Jalisa BOLDEN, Sarah PROCTOR, Euneshia DANIELS, Jasmine BUGG, Jasmine ANDERSON, Porche NEAL, Sharnese WALTERS, Iaellan DAVIS, Parress OWENS, Corinne WALTON, Alice MILLER, Mettia TEAM Total Opponents 32 32 32 31 32 32 31 21 3 23 24 16 11 32 1106 31 967 32 957 31 882 32 1044 0 645 1 293 0 192 0 26 0 94 1 171 0 54 0 18 34.6 30.2 29.9 28.5 32.6 20.2 9.5 9.1 8.7 4.1 7.1 3.4 1.6 123 125 133 110 74 66 33 15 2 9 7 4 1 343 375 275 241 216 184 89 30 5 23 33 18 2 .359 .333 .484 .456 .343 .359 .371 .500 .400 .391 .212 .222 .500 10 57 0 10 11 1 0 1 0 0 3 3 0 702 1834 768 1889 .383 .407 96 177 1st 914 1002 2nd 1071 1111 OT 17 19 NEUTRAL (3-4) (0-2) (3-2) Pct FT Pct Off REBOUNDS Def Tot Avg PF FO A TO Blk Stl Pts Avg 21 .476 177 .322 0 .000 36 .278 37 .297 10 .100 0 .000 1 1.000 1 .000 0 .000 10 .300 12 .250 0 .000 192 19 56 46 83 44 21 18 2 12 9 0 0 278 28 88 87 118 74 41 32 4 14 12 0 0 .691 .679 .636 .529 .703 .595 .512 .563 .500 .857 .750 .000 .000 448 326 322 276 242 177 87 49 6 30 26 11 2 14.0 10.2 10.1 8.9 7.6 5.5 2.8 2.3 2.0 1.3 1.1 0.7 0.2 19 - Coppin State Outlook 2010-2011 SEASON OUTLOOK C OPPIN STATE FOUND ITSELF IN very unfamiliar territory following the 2009-10 season. After their loss to South Carolina State in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament the Eagles failed to advance to the postseason for the first time in five years. Coppin State finished the season with a 10-19 overall record and a 5-11 record in MEAC play. It marked the first time the Lady Eagles have finished the season under .500 in conference play since the 2002-03 season. The Lady Eagles return two starters and eight letterwinners in their bid to return to postseason play and reclaim their position as one of the top teams in the MEAC. He needs 20 victories this season to reach 200 in his storied career. Brown will lead a very young Coppin State team in 2010-11 as the Eagles roster features three juniors, five sophomores and five freshmen. Heading the list of returnees is junior center Jeanine Manley and sophomore forward Leola Spotwood. Manley emerged as one of the top post players in the conference as she ranked second in field goal percentage, ninth in rebounding and 11th in scoring. She finished the season averaging a team-best 12.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, while shooting 54.1 percent from the floor. 33 # Spotwood had an excellent freshman season and led the Eagles with 36 three-point baskets. She was 12th in the MEAC in 3-point field goals made per game (1.3) and seventh in 3-point field goal percentage (.330). For the season, she averaged 6.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game. Coppin State returns six other letterwinners including Crystal Whittington and Dawnae Roberts. Whittington showed tremendous improvement during her sophomore season and will be counted on to log significant minutes during the upcoming season. She averaged 8.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, while shooting 48.5 percent from the field. Roberts joined the team midway through the season after transferring from Temple. She started nine games and averaged 3.4 points and 2.8 rebounds per contest, while ranking second on the team with 12 three-point baskets. Shawntae Payne, Jaleah Holsey and Brittany Boyd also return for their sophomore seasons. Payne played in 28 games and averaged 2.5 points per game, while Holsey saw action in 27 games and averaged 2.0 points per contest. Boyd played in 12 games and averaged 0.7 points and 1.2 rebounds per game. Larissa Carter, Kyra Coleman, Ashle Craig, Jessica Mayes and Kianna Mills are newcomers to the Coppin State team. The Lady Hornets are hoping the addition of several promising newcomers and the return of three others who sat out last season will erase memories of the 2009-10 campaign, which ended with a 6-24 overall record and 4-12 mark in MEAC play. Delaware State was 10th in the final MEAC regular season standings last season. Prior to last season, the Lady Hornets were third or better in the MEAC in eight of head coach Ed Davis’ first nine years with the team. “Last season was very humbling for us,” said Davis, who has led the Lady Hornets to one MEAC title (2007) and four other championship game appearances. “The conference gets better each year, and it’s important that we make the necessary improvements to return to our previous standing in the league.” 2009-10 Overall Record.....................6-24 2009-10 MEAC Record......................4-11 2009-10 MEAC Finish ...............10th place Starters R/L ........................................1/4 Letterwinner R/L..................................6/4 Newcomers ............................................6 Delaware State expects to return just three players who logged significant playing time last season. Forward Brittany Washington (Sr.) is tops among the returners with a 7.1 point-per-game average during the 2009-10 season. Washington also led the Lady Hornets, and was fifth in the MEAC in rebounding at 8.0 per game last year. The native recorded five “double-doubles” and had 10 games with double-figures in rebounds during her junior season. Forward Kianna D’Oliveira returns after averaging 5.0 points and 4.8 rebounds per game in 29 games as a true freshman a year ago. She was also sixth in the MEAC with 0.9 blocks per game during the 2009-10 campaign (27 total blocks). 32 # Defensive specialist Tonya Clark averaged 5.8 points and led the Lady Hornets with 48 steals, despite missing 10 games due to injury last season. Delaware State will also welcome the return of forward Ashley Thompson, who suffered a seasonending knee injury in the 2009-10 opener. Thompson, a three-year letterwinner, averaged 4.1 points and 3.6 rebounds as a junior. She was also tied for second on the team with 23 blocked shots during the 2008-09 campaign. The Lady Hornets are also hoping 2009-10 recruit Uchechi Ahaiwe is ready to contribute this season. Ahaiwe (6-3) was unable to compete last year due to a knee injury. Back-up guards Stephanie Brush and Crystal Pitt also return after seeing limited action last season. The list of newcomers to the team is topped by center Alexis Johnson, who sat out the 2009-10 campaign after transferring from St. Joseph’s University. Johnson (6-3) competed in 24 games in two seasons for the Hawks. The 2010-11 Lady Hornet roster is also expected to feature six true freshmen. Forward Tierra Hawkins is one of the most highly touted recruits in recent team history. The Ft. Washington, Md., native was listed as the nation’s 35th best 2010-11 recruit by HoopGurlz.com after a stellar career at Riverdale Baptist near Washington, D.C. Delaware State also expects newcomer Tiffany Davis to make an immediate impact. Davis (5-9) hails from Suffolk, Va., and was a standout at Hampton High School prior to signing with the Lady Hornets. Former Baltimore, Md., stars Tasia Bristow (5-7) and Chelsea Dukes (5-11) also join the team this season. Guards Deanna Harmon (5-8; Owings Mills, Md.) and Kiana Conner (5-5; Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) round out the list of freshmen newcomers to the team. “We needed to improve our size and athleticism after last season,” Davis said. “I believe we accomplished those goals during the off-season. If we can develop a good chemistry, and avoid the injuries that hurt us last season, we should show significant progress from last year.” MEACsports.com 26 Brittany Washington Sr. • 6-1 • Forward/Center 2010-11 MEAC Women’s Basketball Delaware State Lady Hornets 2009-10 Statistical Review All Game Statistics RECORD ALL GAMES CONFERENCE NON-CONFERENCE OVERALL (6-24) (4-12) (2-12) HOME (5-9) (3-5) (2-4) AWAY (1-13) (1-7) (0-6) NEUTRAL (0-2) (0-0) (0-2) ## Player GP GS Min Avg FG TOTAL FGA Pct 3FG 3-PTS FGA Pct FT F-THROW FTA Pct Off REBOUNDS Def Tot Avg PF FO A TO Blk Stl Pts Avg 23 12 32 14 42 15 50 34 03 22 02 05 25 GALLOWAY, Selena CROCKETT, Cortney WASHINGTON, Brittany ABRAHAM, Alexis CLARK, Tonya D’OLIVEIRA, Kianna BOWEN, Sade STEWART, Alex HOLLOMAN, Ferderica PITT, Crystal BRUSH, Stephanie ROBINSON, Jamarra THOMPSON, Ashley TEAM Total Opponents 26 29 22 27 20 28 26 18 24 20 21 27 1 26 26 8 11 13 26 6 17 6 1 2 2 1 778 905 542 544 491 655 442 339 326 214 270 289 6 29.9 31.2 24.6 20.1 24.6 23.4 17.0 18.8 13.6 10.7 12.9 10.7 6.0 84 98 59 57 40 48 29 18 29 18 15 5 0 276 286 161 199 103 181 80 68 86 58 61 30 1 .304 .343 .366 .286 .388 .265 .363 .265 .337 .310 .246 .167 .000 17 4 1 31 0 0 0 0 11 9 7 2 0 77 23 2 113 2 1 0 0 27 33 40 14 1 .221 .174 .500 .274 .000 .000 .000 .000 .407 .273 .175 .143 .000 57 41 32 21 35 44 41 25 7 8 5 6 0 72 50 59 29 51 71 56 42 14 10 10 10 0 .792 .820 .542 .724 .686 .620 .732 .595 .500 .800 .500 .600 .000 242 241 151 166 115 140 99 61 76 53 42 18 0 9.3 8.3 6.9 6.1 5.8 5.0 3.8 3.4 3.2 2.7 2.0 0.7 0.0 .246 .318 322 365 474 532 .679 .686 3 - Not only did the Lady Pirates win their first MEAC Tournament championship since 2004 and earn a first-round NCAA Tournament date against No. 6 Duke, but they also clinched their first 20-win season since 2002-03. The meter was running last season, and the Lady Pirates certainly cashed in to the tune of a 20-12 record and a 12-4 mark in MEAC play. The Lady Pirates earned the No. 2 seed in the MEAC Tournament and topped South Carolina State in the title game. With four starters returning this season, a new three-year contract signed and former Lady Pirate Ashlee Finley added to the coaching staff, Six is looking not just to repeat as conference champs; he wants to start taking the program to the next level. Hampton Team Information 2009-10 Overall Record...................20-12 2009-10 MEAC Record......................12-4 2009-10 MEAC Finish ..............T-2nd place Starters R/L ........................................5/0 Letterwinners R/L ................................9/6 Newcomers ............................................4 Six returns four starters and nine letterwinners from last year’s championship squad – the crown jewel being senior forward Quanneisha Perry. Perry, the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-MEAC selection, led the team in scoring (12.8 ppg) and rebounding (9.1 rpg), recording 13 double-doubles over the course of the season. On top of pouring in a career-high 31 points at North Carolina A&T, Perry earned MEAC All-Tournament Team honors after averaging 17.3 points and 12.7 rebounds in the MEAC Tournament. While Perry returns to lock down the frontcourt, three other returning starters give the Lady Pirates depth and experience in the backcourt. Junior Bernadette Fortune brings back her speed and driving ability, which netted her 9.5 points per game and Second Team All-MEAC honors last season. Fortune was third on the team in scoring, behind fellow junior Jericka Jenkins. Jenkins, who led the team with 3.6 assists per game, averaged 9.6 points per game in 2009-10 behind the strength of a teamhigh 65 3-pointers made – the fourth-highest mark in team history. Throw in senior Laura Lewis, who averaged 5.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game last season and made 20 starts, and the Lady Pirates bring an experienced, athletic and wide-ranging backcourt. Juniors Choicetta McMillian and Melanie Warner also bring a lot to the table in 2010-11. McMillian led the Lady Pirates in 3-point field goal percentage at .360 (45-for-125), averaging 6.2 points per game. McMillian performed both as a starter and off the bench for Six’s last season, making 11 starts in 31 games – and she had a six-game stretch from February 6 through February 27 where she scored in double figures. Warner was named the MEAC Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player after averaging 18.3 points and 9.7 rebounds over those three games – including a career-high 22 points in the quarterfinals against Maryland-Eastern Shore and a career-high 16 rebounds in the championship game against South Carolina State. Three sophomores will also return, looking to play a bigger role in the Lady Pirates’ success in the coming season: forwards Keiara Avant, Delia Brunson and Ryen Henry. 42 # Quanneisha Perry Sr. • 5-10 • Forward The Lady Pirates already have a decidedly Texas feel, and that connection is bolstered by the incoming class of players. Three of Hampton’s four newcomers this season hail from Texas, while the fourth already has family ties to the program. Junior center Sherena Abercrumbia (Dallas, Texas) and junior guard Christy Willis (Houston, Texas) transferred to Hampton from Lon Morris College, where Abercrumbia earned All-Conference honors, while freshman forward Breanna Harris (Mansfield, Texas) comes to Hampton after helping Mansfield Summit High School win a state championship in her junior year. Freshman guard Chikilra Goodman (Philadelphia, Pa.) is already familiar with the Lady Pirates, as her mother Toni Goodman played at Hampton from 1978-82. Goodman led the nation in scoring last season for Bodine High School, pouring in 36.3 points per game. She also led the team in assists (4.6), rebounds (17.0) and steals (6.3). Young HS 2010-11 MEAC Women’s Basketball THE TEAMS ■ NOVEMBER 12 at Buffalo 14 at Vanderbilt 18 RADFORD 20 LOYOLA 23 at Jacksonville 26 at Connecticut 27 vs. LSU 28 vs. Lehigh Howard Outlook 2010-2011 SEASON OUTLOOK H OWARD ENTERS THE 2010-11 SEASON with high expectations. The Lady Bison, fielding one of the youngest teams in Division I basketball with seven freshmen, surprised everyone last year, finishing 10-6 in the MEAC and advancing to the tournament semifinals before losing to South Carolina State. Howard will be without the services of all-MEAC selection Zykia Brown, who will sit out the season for personal reasons, but there is more than enough firepower for the team to make a run at the conference title. Howard Team Information 2009-10 Overall Record...................16-14 2009-10 MEAC Record......................10-6 2009-10 MEAC Finish .................4th place Starters R/L ........................................4/1 Letterwinners R/L ................................9/2 Newcomers ............................................3 Leading the way will be Saadia Doyle, the 2009-10 MEAC Rookie of the Year. The red-shirt sophomore established herself as one of the dominant players in the country, averaging 16.6 points and 11.0 rebounds per contest to rank among the top players in the nation in double doubles. Doyle and her teammates participated in an intense off-season training program that should make her an even more imposing presence. The Lady Bison’s hopes are also buoyed by the return of Cheyenne Curley Payne, a 5-5 sophomore guard, who proved to be one of the clutch players in the MEAC. Curley Payne averaged 5.1 points and 3.1 assists, but the numbers do not tell the story of her value to the team’s success down the stretch. She had a knack for getting a key steal, knocking down clutch free throws or hitting the back-breaking 3-pointers. Another young player who came on strong for the Lady Bison down the stretch was Tamoria Holmes. The 5-6 sophomore guard averaged 5.0 points and 2.3 rebounds as Howard won five of its last seven games. She is one of the better players in the conference in getting out in transition with her speed and she can also knock down the perimeter shot. 13 # An X factor in the Lady Bison’s push for the next level is Kara Smith. Smith, a 6-0 sophomore, averaged 5.0 points and 2.5 rebounds. Her ability to hit the mid-range shot and get to the basket makes her tough to defend. She could emerge as one of the top players in the conference. Howard should be solid in the post area with the return of Portia and Nicole Deterville, the 6-1 twins. Portia averaged almost three points and four rebounds and showed marked improvement as the season progressed. Nicole proved to be a very good defensive presence. Amanda Edwards, a 6-0 senior forward is a seasoned veteran and one of only two seniors on the squad. She is a defensive stalwart who was having a fine season before suffering an ankle injury that hampered her down the stretch. Howard will also be looking for improvement in the frontcourt from Julee O’Neal, a talented 6-2 sophomore, who saw limited playing time last season, but could be a factor this season. Jalisa Pullins, a 5-5 guard and the team’s other senior, had her best season and helped settle down the young guards. Other contributors could include India Bradford, a 5-4 talented guard, who injured her knee in the sixth game, but should be ready to make a contribution along with 5-9 freshman forward Regis Stinson, 5-8 red-shirt freshman guard Jerelle Gorham, 5-11 freshman forward Cabria Johnson and 5-7 red-shirt sophomore transfer guard Adele Walker. UMES went 12-16 and 8-8 in conference, advancing to the second round of the MEAC Tournament, falling to Hampton. UMES lost four letterwinners from the 2009-10 squad, including arguably the best player in recent program history, April McBride. McBride, a three-time All-MEAC performer and UMES’ second all-time leading scorer, exhausted her eligibility. UMES, though, returns four starters and five letterwinners and adds five talented newcomers. Senior Casey Morton is back to anchor the point-guard spot. She finished in the top 25 and 15 in the conference, respectively, in scoring (9.3 points per game) and assists (2.6). Morton scored double figures 14 times a season ago, posting a season-high 19 in a MEAC Tournament first round win over Delaware State. Junior Amber Cook will provide stability at shooting guard. She started all but one game in 2009-10 averaging 4.6 points and 4.0 rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Chelsea Sanders made an impact in 17 games last season. She scored double digits nine times and had a doubledouble at Morgan State. The 6-foot-1 forward averaged 11.1 points per game and was among the lconference leaders in a handful of categories for much of the year. Junior forward/center Adobi Agbasi, the MEAC’s leading shot blocker, is projected to team up with senior center Chena Parker to provide a 1-2 punch in the middle. Both were solid contributors, starting after the semester break last season. At 6-foot, Agbasi averaged 1.5 blocks per game and had four of the conference’s top single-game block performances. The 6-foot-3 Parker averaged 8.1 points and shot a team-best 49.3 percent. 21 # Senior Latoya Buckner and redshirt junior Bria Jackson will be counted on to hit the outside shot, playing quality minutes from off the bench. They made 20 and 13 3-pointers, respectively, last season. Rounding out the returners are Karona Roach, Amber Elliott, Sha-Kiyla Finney and Krystal Watson. Roach appeared in 22 games and chipped in 1.6 points per game while Elliott and Finney were used sparingly off the bench. Watson is expected back as a walk-on after playing one game in two seasons due to injuries. Batchelor and his staff brought in a class of five newcomers – two junior-college transfers in juniors Kwinnyata Mercer and Caitlyn Dillard and three freshmen, Courtney Braxton, Shanyce Stewart and LaKendra Wilkerson. Mercer, a 5-foot-8 guard/forward, comes in a two-time Division II NJCAA First Team All-American from Marshalltown (Iowa) Community College. Dillard, is a 5-foot-5 guard, attended Cayuga Community College, earning NJCAA Division III Third Team AllAmerican status as a freshman and First Team honors as a sophomore. She led the nation in scoring (24.5) and was named NJCAA Region III Division III Player of the Year and Mid-State Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Braxton, a 5-foot-8 guard, was Princess Anne High School’s Most Outstanding Player in 2009-10. She received the Coaches’ Award as a junior, helping guide her team to a state championship with a 31-1 record. Amber Cook Jr. • 5-8 • Guard Stewart, a 6-foot-1 forward, was named Public High School Athletic Association MVP as a junior and all-section for four years. She also earned All-PHSAA honors her final three seasons to go along with First Team All-State as a senior and Third Team All-State as a junior. Wilkerson is a 5-foot-10 guard/forward from Ben L. BONAVENTURE 20 at South Florida 26-27 at DePaul Tournament Morgan State Outlook 2010-2011 SEASON OUTLOOK F OR THE LAST FOUR YEARS, the Lady Bears’ basketball program gained respect in the MEAC, along the East Coast, as well as nationally. From 2006-10, Morgan State won 71 games and twice set the school record for wins on the Division I level, including a school-best 19 wins during the 2007-08 season. The Lady Bears have gone 35-12 at home during that stretch, including 9-1 last season and reached the conference title game in 2007. Morgan State Team Information 2009-10 Overall Record...................17-13 2009-10 MEAC Record......................12-4 2009-10 MEAC Finish ..............T-2nd place Starter R/L..........................................2/3 Letterwinners R/L ................................3/7 Newcomers ............................................8 A big part of that success on the court was Corin Adams and for the first time in five years, Morgan State will be without her services. The 5-foot-5 guard out of Brooklyn, N.Y., led Morgan State in scoring in each of the last four seasons. She ended her career as the school’s all-time leading scorer – male or female – with 2,058 points. Adams also ranks as the women’s program’s all-time leader in steals (404) and assists (455). During her career, Adams earned All-MEAC Rookie team and MEAC All-Tournament team honors as a freshman, while leading the Lady Bears to the MEAC title game. Adams was named to the All-MEAC first team her final three seasons and captured MEAC Defensive Player of the Year as a junior and MEAC Player of the Year as a senior. Gone with Adams are 19.4 points per game, and 3.5 steals, which ranked fifth in the nation a year ago as a senior. Also gone are the buzzer-beating shots, no-look passes and last second game winners by Adams, who last season set the school’s single season scoring record with 581 points. Morgan State has been picked to finish seventh in this season’s MEAC preseason poll, as voted by the conference’s head coaches and sports information directors. Last year, the Lady Bears were picked to finish fourth, but finished the regular season at 17-13 overall, 12-4 in the MEAC and shared MEAC co-runner-up honors with eventual tournament champion Hampton. It was the highest regular season finish for the Lady Bears, who tied the school record for most conference victories and set the mark for best MEAC record, surpassing the program’s previous mark of 12-6 set in 1999-00. While replacing Adams will not be an easy task, sixth-year Morgan State head coach Donald Beasley will not have to start from scratch. This year’s squad returns seven letterwinners and will rely on the leadership of seniors (Erin Hawkins, Brittany Dodson, Theresa Davis and Brittany Noel) to fill the void. Hawkins, a native of Washington, D.C., was third on the team in scoring with an average of 7.5 points per game. Hawkins, who finished second on the team in 3-pointers made (30) also chipped in with 2.3 rebounds and tallied 40 steals and 54 assists. Dodson, one of five St. Louis, Mo., natives on the team, was Morgan State’s leading scorer off the bench. The 5-5 guard averaged 6.3 points, good for fifth on the team and 2.2 rebounds per contest. Dodson was also the Lady Bears’ most consistent free throw shooter, connecting on .838 percent (31-of-37). Davis, another St. Louis native, was second on the team in scoring last season with 8.6 points per game. Davis played in all 30 games, making 27 starts and was second on the team in rebounding with 5.6 a game. Davis also added 30 steals and 11 assists. 03 # Noel, also a native of St. Louis, last season averaged 4.0 points and 1.6 rebounds per game and shot 77 percent (24-for-37) from the free throw line in her first season at Morgan State. Noel, who reached double figures in scoring three times, appeared in 28 games including 14 starts. Juniors Mahala Thomas and DeKeisha Mathis along with sophomore Briana Coardes also return for the Lady Bears. A native of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Thomas averaged 2.5 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. Known for her willingness to step up and take a charge, the 5-foot-9 reserve guard played in 27 games and made 11 starts. Mathis played in 26 games and made two starts last season. The St. Louis, Mo., native averaged 1.9 points and 0.5 rebounds per outing. Coardes, a walk-on from Clarksville, Tenn., appeared in eight games and averaged 0.8 points and 0.1 rebounds. Fellow sophomore Monesia Davis also returns to the Lady Bears. Davis, a native of St. Louis, Mo., missed the entire 2009-10 season while recovering from an injury the previous season. Davis appeared in 17 games, making four starts and averaged 3.8 points and 1.5 rebounds her freshman year during the 2008-09 campaign. Following the loss of six upperclassmen from the 2009-10 season, the Spartans welcome six new players to the 2010-11 squad to join the six returnees. Senior Genor Dalton (Martinsville, Va./Martinsville HS) and juniors Tyisha Bridges (Greensboro, N.C./Southwest Guilford HS) and Whitney Long (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road HS) bring experience to this rather young team, with each having played a significant role for two full seasons now. More importantly for the coaching staff, after getting outrebounded by 7.5 boards per game and outblocked 106-32, NSU added height, with three of the five freshmen standing 6-0 and a junior college transfer at 5-10. Norfolk State Team Information 2009-10 Overall Record.....................4-23 2009-10 MEAC Record......................0-16 2009-10 MEAC Finish ...............11th place Starters R/L ........................................5/1 Letterwinners R/L ................................6/3 Newcomers ............................................6 In addition to the three upperclassmen, sophomores Batavia Owens (Norfolk, Va./Maury HS), Recca Trice (Arlington, Texas/Juan Seguin HS) and Marian Brooks (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge HS) each saw significant time on the court last year, including Trice, who led the team in assists. Having five freshmen and one JC transfer, Clark and the staff are fortunate to have those six returnees back, who combined to make 118 of the team’s 135 total starts. Dalton, Bridges and Long will anchor the guard positions along with Trice. Bridges and Trice were the only two players last season to start all 27 games, as Trice led the team in assists and steals with 4.8 and 2.0 per game, respectively. Bridges finished fourth with 6.8 points per contest to go along with 3.4 boards. Despite making just 16 starts last year, Long led the team in scoring at 9.9 points per game and finished second in both assists (1.7) and steals (1.5). In addition, she was the team’s leading 3-point threat, hitting 31 percent from beyond the arc, and best free throw shooter at 82-percent. Dalton saw her role increase as the season wore on, ending the year second with 4.5 rebounds per game to go along with 6.3 points in starting 23 games. 32 # Joining them at the guard position for this season are freshmen Rae Corbo (Englewood, N.J./Paramus Catholic HS) and Tia Moore (Fayetteville, N.C./E.E. Smith HS) and JC transfer Sarah Daily (College Station, Texas/Blinn JC). Corbo averaged 20 points per game and earned all-state honors at Paramus Catholic her senior year, and Moore posted 11 points, three rebounds and three assists per game in earning all-conference honors at E.E. Smith High. Daily, meanwhile, spent two years at Blinn JC in Texas after earning all-district honors at A&M Consolidated High School. Brooks anchors the forward slot, where she made 22 starts last year, as she totaled 6.6 points and 4.4 rebounds per contest while also leading the team in shooting at a 43.3 percent clip. Backing her up are 6-foot freshmen Destiny Spence (Metropolis, Ill./Massac County HS) and Rachel Gordon (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park HS). Gordon averaged 13.4 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and three blocks per game as a senior at Osbourn Park to earn second-team all-state accolades. Spence garnered third-team all-state honors at Massac County High, where she posted 12 points and 10 rebounds per game while shooting 52-percent from the floor. At 6-foot-1, Owens brings size to the frontcourt as the team’s primary center. Despite averaging slightly more than 14 minutes a game last season, Owens led the team in boards with 5.4 per contest while chipping in with 4.9 points. Carlon Chambers (Herndon, Va./Herndon HS), the third of the 6-foot freshmen to arrive on campus, will provide backup at center. Chambers was an all-district honoree her senior year at Herndon High. Names such as Amber Bland, BrittanieTaylor James, Ta’Wuana “Tweet” Cook and Lamona Smalley will be replaced with unknown names such as Mikala Scott, Alishia Mosley, DeAndra Davis and Lamesha Deal during the 2010-11 season. Their arrival ends a special era in the history of women’s basketball at N.C. A&T as the hope for more glorious history approaches. In terms of wins, no MEAC team in history has had a three-year run like the Aggies. In putting together three straight 20-win seasons, the Aggies have won 84 games and compiled a 44-4 record during MEAC regular-season games. The reward for all the wins was three straight postseason trips, including an NCAA Tournament appearance and an historic run through the WNIT. North Carolina A&T Team Information 2009-10 Overall Record...................23-11 2009-10 MEAC Record......................14-2 2009-10 MEAC Finish .................1st place Starters R/L ........................................4/1 Letterwinners R/L ................................6/5 Newcomers ............................................8 It was a run that saw the Lady Aggies become the first historically black college or university women’s program to win two consecutive games in a postseason tournament. Now the challenge for Patricia Cage-Bibbs, who enters her sixth season as the head of the Lady Aggies program, is to find a way to keep the Lady Aggies on top with a much different cast than she has had during most of her tenure at N.C. A&T. Don’t expect her opponents to shed too many tears for her. There have not been too many times over her 471-win, 26-year coaching career where Bibbs was caught without a lot of talent to speak of. Although the 2010-11 talent is not the same names that gave the Lady Aggies’ program its resurgence, it’s pretty impressive nevertheless. The Aggies even have one holdover from the 2009 NCAA team in lone senior Jaleesa Sams (F/G, 5-11, New Castle, Pa.). Sams was a second-team all-conference selection. Despite having great talent around her over the last three years, Sams has averaged double figures throughout her career. She is also an excellent passer and rebounder, and with a team that includes seven freshmen, she will be the undisputed leader of the team. 32 # There are three other starters returning from the Lady Aggies outstanding WNIT run last season. Sophomore point guard Amber Calvin’s (5-7, Fayetteville, N.C.) return eases the pain of losing Cook, the Aggies second all-time leading scorer. Calvin, a member of the MEAC’s All-Rookie team, is a great perimeter shooter who is the prototypical point guard. Forward Crystal Murdaugh (5-10, Dublin, Ohio) had an up and down 2009-10 season as she tried to get used to the Aggies system after transferring in from Bowling Green. But there is no denying Murdaugh’s ability to defend and score around the basket. Sophomore Nikia Gorham (C, 6-2, Bowie, Md.) started 23 games for the Lady Aggies at center. If her first season is any indication, she will give the Lady Aggies a lot of second-chance opportunities. She grabbed almost as many offensive rebounds (63) as she did defensive boards (67). Even though Gorham made most of the starts, it was reserve guard JaQuayla Berry (5-11, Douglas, Ga.) who joined Calvin on the All-Rookie team. She made 32 3-pointers and was not shy about taking shots. In addition to the five returning players, the Lady Aggies will get a bonus veteran player this season. Oregon State transfer Alex Mitchell (F/C, 6-3, Oakland, Calif.) will go a long way in replacing Smalley’s rebounding might. Bibbs also found some talent from the softball field. N.C. A&T softball’s all-time leader in home run hitter Lillian Bullock is a two-time All-MEAC selection on the diamond. This season, she will trade in RBIs for jump shots. As a senior at Robert Service High School in Anchorage, Alaska, Bullock (G, 5-8) was named state’s Gatorade Player of the Year. She is a 2010 graduate of N.C. A&T looking to close out her athletic career at the school with a basketball in her hand. Jaleesa Sams Sr. • 5-11 • Guard/Forward MEACsports.com Then there are the freshmen who hope to keep at the top of the MEAC standings for years to come. The Aggies added five guards to the mix in Mikala Scott (5-11, Doorman, S.C.); Joia Coleman (5-4, Fredericksburg, Va.); Lamesha Deal (5-9, Norfolk, Va.); Tracy King (5-10, Alexandria, Va.) and Alishia Mosley (PG, 5-8, Cameron, N.C.). There are also two new forwards in the mix. DeAndra Davis (5-10, Seffner, Fla.) and Sabre Proctor (6-0, Harrisburg, Pa.) come in with reputations as stronger rebounders and athletic defenders. 54 2010-11 MEAC Women’s Basketball North Carolina A&T Lady Aggies 2009-10 Statistical Review All Game Statistics RECORD ALL GAMES CONFERENCE NON-CONFERENCE OVERALL (23-11) (14-2) (9-9) ## Player GP GS Min Avg FG TOTAL FGA Pct 3FG 05 32 14 45 13 04 10 03 44 25 01 12 COOK, Ta’Wuana SAMS, Jaleesa CALVIN, Amber SMALLEY, Lamona BERRY, JaQuayla MURDAUGH, Crystal THOMAS, Tierra ALFORD, Tyronnica GORHAM, Nikia DEBLANC, Nakia COULTER, Lonise WADDELL, Shantar TEAM Total Opponents 30 29 33 33 34 33 31 29 34 25 11 11 30 26 26 19 8 20 10 6 24 0 0 1 951 830 903 868 589 802 489 565 529 166 64 46 31.7 28.6 27.4 26.3 17.3 24.3 15.8 19.5 15.6 6.6 5.8 4.2 168 112 116 130 91 68 51 42 68 18 6 3 358 235 282 231 276 208 132 93 146 37 16 8 .469 .477 .411 .563 .330 .327 .386 .452 .466 .486 .375 .375 81 7 54 1 32 0 7 1 0 0 0 0 873 2022 815 1963 .432 .415 183 139 BY PERIOD Team Opponents 34 34 1st 1197 1064 2nd 1248 1145 3-PTS FGA HOME (9-1) (8-0) (1-1) NEUTRAL (4-1) (0-0) (4-1) Pct FT Pct Off REBOUNDS Def Tot Avg PF FO A TO Blk Stl Pts Avg 201 .403 25 .280 143 .378 1 1.000 131 .244 1 .000 27 .259 5 .200 0 .000 0 .000 0 .000 0 .000 85 106 74 48 36 30 45 53 23 15 0 1 121 145 90 79 58 43 63 78 46 22 1 2 .702 .731 .822 .608 .621 .698 .714 .679 .500 .682 .000 .500 502 337 360 309 250 166 154 138 159 51 12 7 16.7 11.6 10.9 9.4 7.4 5.0 5.0 4.8 4.7 2.0 1.1 0.6 7 - For the Lady Eagles, it means a new challenge, a new home and a new beginning as the Lady Eagles take on a new look to go along with their new era as a Division I program in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. From a team that went 11-18 last season and earned the most wins of any NCCU Division I team, the Lady Eagles return just five. Aside from five student-athletes from the 2009-10 squad, fans will see two more familiar faces as NCCU returns its top two scorers from the 2008-09 campaign. With seven veteran student-athletes, the Lady Eagles will have a strong nucleus. Joining those seven will be six talented and committed freshmen. North Carolina Central Team Information 2009-10 Overall Record...................11-18 2009-10 MEAC Record ........................n/a 2009-10 MEAC Finish ..........................n/a Starters R/L ........................................2/3 Letterwinners R/L ................................7/7 Newcomers ............................................6 Head coach Joli Robinson, who enters her 15th season at the helm of the Lady Eagle program, expects a more competitive and talented team this season. This year’s squad will have a lot of versatility and depth, allowing NCCU to show opponents a lot of different options on both sides of the basketball. With the return of Jori Nwachukwu, who averaged 18.5 points and 7.7 rebounds per game during the 2008-09 season, the Lady Eagles look to add power to their post game, while adding strength on the boards. The redshirt senior, who has earned numerous honors throughout her career, looks to continue her dominance on the hardwood and will add a lot to NCCU’s level of play this season. Another familiar face on the court this season will be redshirt sophomore Chasidy Williams, who was the second leading scorer for the Lady Eagles during the 2008-09 campaign with an 11.8 scoring average. The Fayetteville, N.C., native returns to the squad this season ready to take on the challenge. She is listed as a post player, but will be seen all over the floor, showing her versatility and skill. 3 # Blaire Houston, the returning captain from last year’s squad, returns to the guard position after averaging 8.2 points last season. Houston will be looked to for her leadership this season as she continues to battle for her place in the starting rotation. Houston, along with returning senior Shanise Blanks, will be expected to anchor the guard position this season. Blanks returns for her senior season and stands as the Lady Eagles sharpshooter once again this season. The Wilmington, N.C., native hit 64 3-point field goals last season to set a career high, nailing 36.4 percent of her shots from long range. She will once again contribute to the Lady Eagles’ 3-point game. J’Mia Pollock, Sheresa Mills and Destiny Tolliver round out the Lady Eagles’ returners for this season, as they each add depth to the post position. Pollock, a 6-2 sophomore, will battle to stay in the starting rotation with the addition of Nwachukwu and Williams to the lineup. Mills, who improved tremendously as the season progressed, hopes to continue her contributions on offense, while Tolliver will continue to stand as a threat on the boards for NCCU as she brings height and strength to the Lady Eagles’ post game, standing at 6-2. Six true freshmen will join the Lady Eagles’ roster this season as they each bring their own sense of style to the Lady Eagle program. This freshmen class is talented and versatile, which will add a new look to NCCU as it enters MEAC action. All six of them have the ability and desire to be in the starting rotation and battle for playing time this season. Assisting Houston and Blanks at the guard position are Ebonie Bryant, Tenika Neely, Sierra Solomon and Justyne Sublett. Solomon, a local talent from Broughton High School, will see playing time at both the guard and forward positions, allowing more options down low. Bryant, Neely and Sublett will add speed to the guard position as they look to contribute to the Lady Eagles’ long range game. Jori Nwachukwu r-Sr. • 6-0 • Forward/Center Rounding out the freshmen class are Tiffany Gary and Alesha Jenkins, who add strength and agility to NCCU’s post game. The Lady Tigers began last season on fire as they started the year with a 6-2 record after eight games. Other players not returning include: guards Ashlee Barley, Treasure Monroe and Deanna Newton; forwards Carlita Johnson, Gabrielle Bennett and Raven James; and center Reynetta Phillips. The 2010-2011 Lady Tigers return three starters from last season’s team. Alisha Nelson, Kymberli Stamps and Courtney Long are all expected to make immediate impacts this season. Nelson finished the season ninth nationally in blocked shots with 91. She also led the team in rebounds with 7.6 per game while averaging 4.9 points. Long was the team’s second leading scorer averaging 8.7 points along with 3.8 rebounds. She also led the team in steals with 64. Stamps averaged 4.8 points and 1.8 rebounds. She led the team in 3-point field goals made with 33. 22 # Forward Darice Fountaine will also be returning this season. Baker added eight new players to the 2010-11 Lady Tigers roster. The group of three seniors, five juniors, five sophomores and three freshmen will have to gel however and grow up quickly to get the job done. Third year head coach Doug Robertson knows it’s going to take more than just words to get the job done. This year’s squad returns four starters and two reserves that saw significant minutes on the court. The team also had five other returnees who at any time would contribute off the bench. The 2010-11 squad also welcomes back a member of its backcourt who was out last year due to an injury. 2009-10 Overall Record...................14/19 2009-10 MEAC Record......................5-11 2009-10 MEAC Finish .................8th place Starters R/L ........................................4/1 Letterwinners R/L ............................11/12 Newcomers ............................................5 The Lady Bulldogs have the fortunate pleasure of returning its leading scorer and top rebounder from a year ago. Overall the top five returnees for SC State averaged a combined 39.1 points and 22.4 rebounds. Coupled with a few additions, the 2010-11 Lady Bulldogs should be poised to compete from the beginning of the season until the end. Senior Whitney Wiley, last year’s leading scorer (14.2), will be the cornerstone of the backcourt. She will be paired with Tiara Knotts, a point guard who should be 100% heading into the season after nursing a knee injury for most of last season. Sophomore Trinese Fox and senior Sunikia Bullen should also provide help at the guard position SC State’s frontcourt will perhaps be one of the strongest in the MEAC. With the return of All-MEAC Rookie Team member Paris Alston controlling the paint and the experience of senior forward Joi Walker and junior forward Tiana Hemphill, who each played in all 33 games last season, the Lady Bulldogs frontcourt will undoubtedly be a tough one to handle. Once again this season the Lady Bulldogs will be guard-heavy as half of the players on the roster are listed at the position. The one major difference from last season and perhaps most importantly is that the position has no newcomers. Wiley, the top returnee at the position will undoubtedly continue to be one of the top guards for the Lady Bulldogs and among the finest in the MEAC. In addition to contributing 14.2 points per game Wiley was third in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage at 37%. She was also ranked in the MEAC in scoring (13th); and 3-point field goals made (13th). She will receive help from Knotts, who finished the season second on the team in assists with 65 (2.32 per game) and third in steals with 32 (1.14 per game). 1 # Help at the guard position will also come from senior Sunikia Bullen and sophomore Trinese Fox. Bolstering the position are returnee’s Lauren Johnson, Mary-Regina Baker, and Brijan Turner. The Lady Bulldogs will also welcome back junior Lateia Brailey, who sat out last season due to a knee injury. The forward positions will prove once again to be one of strengths for the Lady Bulldogs. Leading the way at the position will be senior Joi Walker. Walker was fourth in scoring and second in rebounding averaging 6.9 and 5.2 respectively. Also adding depth to the forward position is junior Tiana Hemphill who led the team in blocks with 30 (.91). Rounding out the forward position are Cherisha Floyd (6-0, Fr., Orangeburg, SC/Orangeburg-Wilkinson HS), Christiana Perkins (5-11, Fr., Neptune Beach, Fla./Fletcher HS), Ryane Smart (5-10, Fr., Charlotte, NC/Vance HS) and Tracey Flowers (5-10, Jr., Augusta, GA/Daytona State Community College). Controlling the paint for the 2010-11 Lady Bulldogs will be All-MEAC Rookie Team member Paris Alston. Alston was third on the team in scoring and first in rebounding averaging 8.1 and 5.7 respectively. Joining her in the paint this season will be Fannie Goodwin. Goodwin, who transferred from the University of Texas El Paso will bring the experience of the collegiate game. During her one season at UT-El Paso she averaged 5.5 points and 5.7 rebounds.
