ULM will play Lamar in a non-conference game inside the Montagne Center on Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. LAST TIME OUT Ashley Wallis scored 15 points to pace a balanced ULM attack in a 75-57 victory over Southern Miss inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum in Monroe, La., Tuesday night. Wallis’ 15 points, a career-high, was one of three double-digit scorers for the Warhawks, who have now won four straight games. Shannon Davis added 13 points, a career-high – along with seven rebounds, and Lottie Moore chipped in 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. In total, 11 Warhawks scored at least four points. “This game is a huge confidence booster for our entire team,” ULM head coach Mona Martin said. “We have had a hard four or five days and I am pleased with the overall effort.” ULM’s press defense forced the Golden Eagles into a season-high 28 turnovers. The Warhawks turned those turnovers into 27 points, while turning the ball over a season-low 17 times. more transfer, to the 2008-09 season. Losing 50 percent of its scoring from last season the Warhawks will look upon senior Lottie Moore to up her 9.7 points per game average from her junior campaign. SCOUTING TULANE The Green Wave were tabbed to finish fifth in the Conference USA Preseason Poll as voted on by the conference’s coaches. Both teams exchanged points for the first five minutes before the Warhawk defensive pressure stepped up. ULM increased its lead from two to as many as 11, 24-13, with 9:49 on the clock. Chassity Brown scored a team-high 16 points, while Brett Benzio recorded her first career double-double. “I think it says a lot about how unselfish we are having that many players score,” Martin said. “It doesn’t matter who is scoring, every game somebody new steps up. I thought Shannon Davis was unbelievable tonight.” The Golden Eagles and Warhawks exchanged buckets for first four minutes of the second half before the ULM defense, just like in the first half, turned up the heat. In a matter of just over two minutes, the Warhawk lead went from five points to 12. ULM held Southern Miss to one shot and caused a pair of turnovers during the run. “I think our commitment and how hard we are playing is why they wore down towards the end. They say defense wins games and I totally agree with that,” Martin said after the victory. Throughout the remaining 13-plus minutes, ULM preserved its double-digit lead and filtered in its entire bench. There were five Warhawk reserves that played double-digit minutes, led by Sumar Leslie’s 17. SCOUTING THE WARHAWKS ULM returns seven letterwinners and welcomes eight newcomers, seven freshmen and a sopho- ULMAthletics.com ULM’s guard combo of Carrier and Moore continues to lead the Warhawk offense as the top two scorers with 9.4 and 7.6 points per game, respectively. Moore also leads the team in assists (21) while Carrier leads in 3-point makes (11). Ashley Langford is 68 assists shy of secondplace all-time in C-USA career assists. TULANE’S LAST GAME Tulane returned from a three-game road trip Wednesday to take an 80-65 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette in Fogelman Arena in New Orleans, La. Jordan Rawson led nine Warhawks who scored in the opening half with six points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field. On eight different occasions this season Moore has assisted on a Carrier deep ball, the best connection of any two players on the squad. The Green Wave are led by Brittany Lindsey’s 12.2 points per game and 3.2 rebounds per contest. “I thought we were outsized and our depth helped us tremendously tonight,” Martin said. “Our pressure defense was a key along with our depth. I think it says volumes for our team to defeat a team that was predicted to win their conference.” Southern Miss fought back chipping away at the Warhawk lead little by little. ULM took a four-point lead into halftime, 32-28. tacking the basket and Jesse Carrier’s forte is to shoot the deep-ball. Tulane returns three starters and nine letterwinners from last year’s squad that finished 16-14. Head coach Lisa Stockton returns for her 14th season with the Green Wave and is C-USA’s alltime winningest women’s basketball coach. Entering Tuesday’s game Moore was third in the Sun Belt averaging 4.25 assists per game and Carrier was hitting 2.75 3-point shots per game, also good for third. DAVIS GOBBLING UP THE OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS During the Warhawks game against Southern Miss on Tuesday, Shannon Davis recorded her third game this season with at three offensive rebounds (at Arkansas, 7, at Centenary, 3, Southern Miss, 6). Moore currently has 517 points for a career average of 5.7 points per game. On Nov. 20 of last season she dropped a careerhigh five 3-point shots on five attempts against Southern Miss and also made five 3-point shots this season against Marshall on Nov. 22. She has a nice jump shot and can score from anywhere on the floor.” YOUR SPOKESWOMAN Lottie Moore was chosen as the captain of the 2008-09 ULM season as voted on by the players. This marks the first time Moore has been honored with this title. RETURNING EXPERIENCE ULM returns seven letterwinners who played an average of 15.3 minutes per game last season. ULM HEAD COACH MONA MARTIN In her 14th season at the helm of the ULM women’s basketball program is head coach Mona Martin. A 1976 graduate of Northwestern State, Martin entered the 2008-09 season with an impressive 192-179 collegiate coaching record for the Warhawks which includes a pair of 20-win seasons. Her 195 wins are the second most in program history, trailing only Linda Harper’s mark of 213 set from 1978-1990. Martin enters the 2008-09 season, her third in the Sun Belt Conference, as the second-longest tenured coach at ULM, trailing only coach Rosemary Holloway-Hill’s 24 seasons as head coach of the Warhawk softball team. In Martin’s 13 previous seasons directing the Warhawks they have tallied eight winning seasons with the best season coming in 2004-05, a 22-8 record, (73.3 percent). COACH MARTIN IN SECOND PLACE AMONGST SUN BELT COACHES Mona Martin’s impressive coaching record spans much more than only the annals of ULM. Entering the 2008-09 season, Martin ranks second amongst all Sun Belt Conference coaches in terms of coaching victories in their current position. FIU’s Cindy Russo ranks first with 582 victories. INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR Sophomore transfer Katharina Schnitzler is the fifth international-born player to play for ULM since the 1979-80 season. A native of Mainz, Germany, Schnitzler played for Germany’s First National League during the 2006-07 season. She also captured fifth place with Germany’s National Team during the European Championship. The other foreign-born players were Carolina Adriaansz (Paramaibo, Suriname; 06-07), Ilona Hollosy (Szombathely, Hungary; 97-01), Lily Mallet (Ipswich, England; 99-00) EJ Lee (Seoul, South ULMAthletics.com Korea; 82-86) - now associate head coach EJ Ok. TALENT OUTSIDE THE STATE Sumar Leslie represents the only player in ULM’s 2008 freshmen class from the state of Louisiana. Larrie Williams (Arkansas); Katharina Schnitzler (Germany); Portia Tucker and Marion Zollicoffer (Mississippi); Kathryn Lonsberry, Elizabeth Torres and Nicole Tucker (Texas) all join the Warhawks from outside the Louisiana state borders. A FRESH POINT TO LEAD With the loss of two point guards from last season, head coach Mona Martin recruited a trio of point guards to guide and direct her team this season. Sumar Leslie, Elizabeth Torres and Katharina Schnitzler will be looked upon to guide the Warhawks despite their youth and inexperience at the college level. LOTTIE MOORE GARNERS PRESEASON HONOR After finishing the 2007-08 season second at ULM in both scoring and rebounding, Lottie Moore was named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Third Team in a vote by the league’s coaches. Notable rule changes that the average basketball fan will see are: • Two three point lines. The 3-point line moved was back from 19′9″ to 20′9″ (this is for Men only). The desired effect of this is to extend the game and open up the interior. Some believe it will create more room for everyone to operate, post players and perimeter guys. • Goal tending is called anytime after the ball hits the backboard (even “on the way up”). This eliminates the judgment call by the referees on whether a ball is on the way up or down after it hits the backboard. • Creation of two categories of Technical Fouls; Type A technical fouls are for unsportsmanlike conduct and will replace Direct Technical Fouls. Type B fouls deal with infractions of the rules that neither involves contact nor causes contact with opponent and fall below the limit of an unsportsmanlike act. If you were scoring technical fouls, it would take two Type A technicals or three Type B technicals to get ejected. • Home must wear “light” jersey and away must wear “dark”. Of course, agreements for special occasions can be agreed by both teams to nullify this rule. ULMAthletics.com ULM Head Coach Mona Martin 14th Season at ULM 196-180 Overall Record ULM head coach Mona Martin enters her 14th season at ULM, fitting as it may be, the school’s second longest tenured head coach. Martin guides the Warhawks into their third season as members of the Sun Belt Conference. Last year, Martin led the Warhawks to a 10-8 Sun Belt record and 17-13 overall record. The Warhawks were predictied to finish sixth in the Sun Belt West Division preseason poll. Winning a conferencebest six road games, propelled the Warhawks to a third place finish in the West Division. “Coaching at ULM is special to me because of the support from the administration,” Martin said. “I am proud of our players because of the high graduation that we have attained while I have been here. It means a lot to have quality people graduate from this program.” In their final season in the Southland Conference, the Martinled Warhawks advanced to the O’Reilly Auto Parts/Southland Conference Tournament semifinals. ULM played Stephen F. Austin for the second time to overtime in eight days, coming up one point shy of their second consecutive trip to the championship game. In 2004-05, Martin led ULM to a Southland Conference regular season co-championship and a 20-win season (22-8) for only the seventh time in school history. Martin coached former Warhawks standout Nina Randle to a new ULM and SLC career record in steals on her way toward earning all-Southland Conference first team and SLC All-Tournament honors. Randle went on to play professionally in Switzerland. Michelle Biley, then a junior, also received all-Southland honors, and Aishie Banks, also a junior in 2004-05, was named to the SLC all-Tournament team. During Martin’s time at ULM, the Warhawks have experienced great individual success. Martin has guided 17 individuals who were named to all-conference teams, including four on the All-SLC first team. In 2005-06, LaJeanna Howard was named to the All-Southland Conference second team. Martin was twice named the SLC Coach of the Year, picking up the honor in 1998 and again in 2005. Entering the 2008-09 campaign, Martin’s 192 career wins at ULM are the second-most by a Sun Belt Conference head coach at their current school. Having her program in a situation where it can vie for the conference title year in and year out is exactly what Martin envisioned when she arrived at ULM in 1995 after compiling a 120-70 (.631) record in six seasons at West Monroe High School. Martin began her career in 1976 at Natchitoches, La., Central High School, only three months after graduating from Northwestern State with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and physical education. Martin and Central got started together because the school was about to play its inaugural season of girls’ basketball and needed a coach. The combination was a great success. In 11 years, Martin guided NCHS to a 266-91 record, a winning percentage of .746. All but one of her teams went into the state playoffs, four of them went to the state final four and three—the 1981, 1986 and 1987 squads—won state championships. Her 1986 team went 36-0, won the state title and finished the ULMAthletics.com season ranked No. 8 in the nation. Martin was not only voted the state’s top coach but the National Coach of the Year. The Lady Chiefs never finished lower than second in the district under Martin, winning six district crowns and finishing second five times. She was named district Coach of the Year four times and Louisiana Coach of the Year three times (1982, 1986, 1987). Her last two Natchitoches Central teams were 70-3 and won state titles both years. In May 1987, Martin entered collegiate coaching when she was named associate head coach at Northwestern State. In her two years, she helped the Lady Demons go 38-20 and make their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. From Northwestern State, Martin moved to West Monroe High School where success followed. In her six years at WMHS, she put the Lady Rebels in the state playoffs every year and won three District 2-5A championships. Her 1994 squad went to the state finals and Martin received her fourth state Coach of the Year award. Her coaching career also includes, 10 seasons of AAU basketball coaching experience, serving as co-head coach of the New Orleansbased Domino’s team. Her first AAU team advanced to the 1986 national championship game. Her final squad, just before she was named ULM head coach, finished seventh among 77 teams at the 1995 national championships in Dallas. At ULM, she has a record of 192-179 overall and 127-103 in league contests as a member of the Southland Conference. After opening with two 5-21 seasons, she guided her 1997-98 team to a 19-9 record and a second-place finish in the Southland, earning Martin Coach of the Year awards from both the Southland Conference and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. Her 2000-01 team was 20-9 and again second in the Southland. Martin’s overall head coaching record for 13 years at ULM and 17 as a high school coach is 595-353 (.630). The ULM coach is married to Mike, a design engineer for Superlift in West Monroe. Born in New Orleans, Martin grew up in Houston, Texas, and graduated from Waltrip Senior High School. In addition to her bachelor’s degree from Northwestern State, she also received a master of science degree in physical education from the same institution in 1979. 2008-09 ULM Warhawk Women's Basketball ULM Combined Team Statistics (as of Nov 25, 2008) All games RECORD: ALL GAMES CONFERENCE NON-CONFERENCE ## 20 11 40 13 21 34 35 32 15 10 30 01 24 Player gp-gs Carrier,Jesse Moore,Lottie Wallis,Ashley Leslie,Sumar Torres,Elizabeth Davis,Shannon Williams,Larrie Williams,Sannisha Rawson,Jordan Courtney,Kassie Tucker,Portia Zollicoffer,Marion Lonsberry,Kathryn Total..........
