A Short History
of
Vine Village
“Let’s do it!” said Dante Bagnani, upon
hearing George and Grace Kerson’s dream of
a new program for people with developmental
disabilities. With these three simple words, the
Dream was launched. The three purchased a
V
ine Village became a reality 1973. Together,
the two families put down-payments on a beautiful
rural horse ranch in Napa Valley which was close
enough to a city so that the residents could make full use
of the community resources. Here they believed their
children could experience the quality of life they truly
deserved.
The Kerson’s son Michael and his wife Nancy were
newly married and they came to help Vine Village get
started “just for a month.” Within that month, Michael
was handed the job of Executive Director, and 36 years
later Mike and Nancy are still here guiding Vine Village’s
continuing development and evolution. “We have had
the opportunity to do something with our lives that very
few people have ever had the chance to do. It has been
wonderful and difficult. Still is,” says Michael.
small ranch in Napa’s Carneros region, filed
non-profit incorporation papers and hired staff.
Vine Village opened for residency in
May of 1973.
I
How it all began
n 1954 Deborah Jane Kerson was born with
Down’s Syndrome. Their doctor suggested that
they leave her at the hospital and turn her care over to
the state, and put their energies into their other children,
who “might amount to something.” It did not take
George and Grace even a second to reject that idea.
Instead Debbie was part of their family, along with her
brothers Donald, Michael, and Jerry. George and Grace
made it their lifetime mission to fight for, and create the
best educational, vocational, and social opportunities for
her.
As Debbie approached adulthood, her parents found
little satisfaction in the living options people like
Debbie were offered at the time. Long time friend
Dante Bagnani was facing the same challenges for his
developmentally disabled children. Both families knew
they wanted their children to live full, independent, useful
lives while living in an environment where their special
needs would be met.
2
Since 1973
What began with only two residents has grown to 19
on this magical 25-acre ranch. The family-style living
environment is designed to meet the individual’s need for
both belonging and independence. Most residents go
into town every day to work. Another 20 people from
the community come to Vine Village five days a week
to participate in the Arts Program. The swimming pool,
bocce ball courts, grounds and recreation center is shared
with Special Olympics and others in the community.
Unlike most residential programs, Vine Village’s staff tend
to find in Vine Village their Life’s Work. Many have been
with the program for 15, 20, and 25 years - making
long-term contributions to the development of the program
overall, and making it possible for the residents to truly
know the stability and love of a true home.
Dante Bagnani was a California Wine Pioneer, and also
part owner in a large wine vinegar business. So it was
only natural that both wine and vinegar would become
work activities for the residents, as well as, eventually, a
source of revenue to help support the program. In 1975
the first grape vines were planted. Organic gardening
began as a source of wholesome food for the table, and
today Vine Village’s produce stand is a regular fixture at
the Napa Downtown Farmers Market. All proceeds from
these projects, help support Vine Village.
However, it is this event - our Annual Vine Village
Celebration, that is our major and most critical fundraiser.
We hope you will have a most enjoyable and
memorable day here, and we thank you for your
continued support of Vine Village.

e believe you will be enchanted by this collection
of charming, colorful and thought-provoking works
of art, for sale here. We think you will agree that
the art created by our Vine Village artists has a visionary
quality and a directness of expression that comes from the
depths of their own personalities.
Sometimes this genre is described as “Outsider Art”
-- “eccentric and engaging works of art, created without
regard to the mainstream art world’s recognition,
marketplace or definitions.” The artists and their art speak
directly from personal
vision, experience,
memory, and intuition,
rather than from
popular ideals.
Your purchase will:
• Add to your
current art
collection or
start a new one.
• Reward and
acknowledge a
Vine Village artist. According to Vine Village
Art Program Director Catalina Arabia,
“When their work sells, it bolsters their
confidence and encourages future artistic
expression.”

RICHARD MENDELSON SCULPTURE
Acclaimed local artist and attorney, Richard Mendelson,
offers the winning bidder this wonderful sculpture piece
along with two of his own wines.
Richard Mendelson was born in Jacksonville, Florida, in
September, 1953, and has resided in the Napa Valley
since 1986. He is a sculptor in steel and stainless steel
as well as a wine lawyer and professor at the University
of California Berkeley School of Law.
Richard Mendelson’s passion for art arises from his
lifelong interest in body movement. As a long-time
student, practitioner and teacher of yoga, tai chi and
chi gung, Mendelson strives to evoke the maximum
of energy and emotion from the minimum of material.
“Most of my work is figurative and all of it is inspired
by movement. The combination of metal’s edges and
solidity, surrounded by emptiness, allows me to express
the human condition and its many facets: grandiose at
times, often whimsical, always flowing.” Collector Rene

metal that comes to life.”

“COLORFUL TREE”
For several years now, the “Art & Wine” series developed
by Vine Village Board member Sylvia Klenz has been a
favorite of auction-goers. This series features one-of–akind labels designed by artists in the Vine Village day
program, paired with exceptional wines from the Fosters
Wine Estates family.
Twila Van Damme created this stunning label design as
part of her work in the Vine Village Arts program. In
addition, the winning bidder gets to keep the original
painting.
The wine is St. Clement 2005 Oroppas Napa Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon, which scored 91 Points by Robert
Parker’s Wine Advocate and 90 Points from Wine
Spectator
