We - Midvale Country Club
AUTUMN 2015 President’s Message Dear Members, As I realize that I am in my final six months as your Club President, it is amazing to think just how fast time goes by. As a gesture of thanks to the Board of Governors and Past Presidents for all of their hard work and extra effort, the club annually hosts a day of golf called the Board of Governors Day. On this day, the current Board of Governors pair up with Past Presidents of the club to share in a day of camaraderie. It is not too difficult to summarize why Midvale Country Club has been and continues to be the leader within our marketplace. Midvale Country Club is extremely fortunate to have had such talented presidents in our past: Phil Garver, Chuck Lazio, Joe DePaolis, Bill Yantz, Dan Camelio, Sergio Esteban, Bill Adams, Fred Cyprys, Steve Holmes, and Glenn Pezzulo. I have had the luxury of having the great momentum from these individuals, enabling Midvale’s continued SUCCESS. This year’s BOG Day was a bit saddened as we had learned that one of our Past Presidents fell ill and was battling for his life. The entire room took a moment of silence and thanks for this Past President, as it was evident that the end was near. I can only hope that heaven has a Board of Governors to assist them, as Mel Gumbiner will certainly make a great future candidate. In July, our fiscal 2014 financial audit was completed, and on July 19th, Bonadio & Co. shared these results in our Annual Financial Membership Meeting. It was evident that the recent spike in the minimum wage affected a large majority of our seasonal staff as labor costs were elevated from the prior year levels. Tight controls were placed and managed throughout every department, minimizing exposure to a deficit. While these strategies were in place, we did still yield a deficit, due to the shortfall in member’s dues. The solution to this shortfall is the growth of our membership! We need you, as our ambassadors to the club, promoting all of the good the club has to offer. Where else could you go and get fabulous course conditions, delicious lunch and dinner service, plus enjoy seasonal amenities like swimming, tennis, platform tennis, and an endless variety of social activities? We appreciate your decision to make Midvale Country Club your choice, but now need you to go out and promote the club to others. I have been told by management that with just twenty more members, we would operate annually in the black. I challenge each member to try to promote the club to just three potential members. This would create over one thousand leads, which if just two percent joined, would bring us to our goal! I am optimistic, as we have had fifteen membership inquiries and have welcomed seven new members since September 1st. Please note that the Membership Committee is offering special Fall Joining Incentive whereas new members enjoy added benefits at our Social/Pool/Tennis rate structure. I am counting on you to keep this momentum charging ahead. It is an honor to recognize this year’s Club Champions as they proudly represent the club through Labor Day 2016! Men’s Club Champion: Paul Parrone, Women’s Club Champion: Jane Duke, Couples Club Champions: Michelle & Craig Neal, Senior Club Champion: Todd Metcalfe, Super Senior Club Champion: Jim Barletta, plus our Junior Club Champions: Seamus Hogan, Christian Bosco & Matthew Carpentier. Join me as I congratulate all of our Club Champions. Thank you for making Midvale Country Club the best club in the district, hands down. Warm Regards, Mike Alesi BOARD OF GOVERNORS FOR 2015 - 2016 MICHAEL ALESI BILL ADAMS RALPH FORNUTO President Long Range Planning Grounds MICHAEL GOLANKA JERRY ANTETOMASO JOHN GAFFNEY Vice President Social / Membership Lockers GLENN PEZZULO FRED CYPRYS STEVE HOLMES Treasurer Insurance and Audit Membership and Retention; Finance JOSH STUBBE EMILIO DICATALDO Recording Secretary Membership and Retention ANGE LOVULLO JAMES SCHRADER JOSEPH FIORIE JERRY MCEVILY Building and Facilities Building and Facilities Finance Secretary Tennis & Swimming 2 A Message from Your General Manager e just witnessed what seemed to be the fastest ninety-three days of the year. SUMMER arrived and passed in what felt like the blink of an eye. No need to be sad as AUTUMN started out warmer than expected and Midvale CC is going to continue to keep your family busy for the remainder of the year! Midvale Country Club, like so many other clubs, has seen their membership lifestyles get busier and busier. What used to be busy “at times,” is now busy “all of the time.” While most of the country clubs have reported decreases in membership usage, our family-friendly atmosphere has enabled us to maintain our membership participation levels. We continue to offer a wide variety of events at many different times in order to cater to your busy lifestyles. We understand that fitting in a dinner at the club when your family has to finish their homework, go to a two hour sports practice, and/or wait for mom or dad to get home from work, can be quite the challenge. If this scenario sounds like your home, then we have just the answer. Midvale Country Club is creating additional services which will allow you to enjoy your club at your convenience. Our new Thursday Family Night themed dinner service is just one example, and is designed to allow your family to enjoy dinner at your club in a timely manner. Each Thursday, Chef Hayes will feature a different themed cuisine with service beginning as early as 5:00 p.m. for your convenience. Be sure to review the enclosed advertisement as you will find everything from pasta, tacos and much more. All value-priced for our members, of course. In addition, country clubs are realizing that families are looking for more casual dining options. Whether after a soccer practice or dance rehearsal, we understand that members want to be able to relax and enjoy their club in a casual environment. Our recent denim survey is just the first step in collecting your thoughts as the casual trend appears to be leading the lifestyle change. You can be assured that Midvale Country Club is still planning on hosting formal events as they also have become W woven into our culture. So how is your club doing? The answer is actually better than you might have guessed. For four years following the 2008 economic downturn, our club membership transitioned more heavily into our Social/Pool/Tennis classifications. The swing of members relocating their memberships into this classification was felt as membership dues revenues showed small declines. This, of course, was at the same time that state labor rates were being increased and commodity prices spiked. Tighter controls were placed on all operations, yet operations still yielded a small deficit at year-end. The good news: Since the summer of 2014, golf memberships are steadily growing and existing members are now upgrading their memberships into golf classifications rather than the opposite. While we still have a ways to go, membership momentum is headed in the right direction. The club continues to operate on a conservative basis, as tight controls remain in place for the short-term. Our long-term outlook is the best it has ever been. In less than a decade, the club will have eliminated all of the long-term debt, improving the club’s financial footprint by nearly a quarter of a million dollars annually. This will definitely eliminate any future small deficits as well as position the club favorably for any future projects the membership may want at that time. Never in the club’s eighty-six-year history have we been in such a strong long-term financial position. Congratulations and thank you for remaining loyal to your Midvale Country Club family. In closing, I am grateful and thankful for the opportunity to be a part of your successes. Many members have asked me why it appears as though I am always at the club. My answer is simple, I completely enjoy my job and the membership I work for. My passion and commitment toward excellence will never let up, as my goal is to exceed every member’s expectation, as lofty as that may be. The true challenge is to motivate all one hundred and fifty co-workers to do the same. Sincerely, Rich Marr, General Manager Sunshine Get well cards were sent to Mr. Mike Palmeri, Mr. Edward Baird and Mr. Gerald Sukert. Our sympathies go out to Mr. and Mrs. Mark Rohlin on the passing of his father; Mrs. Rose Masucci and family upon the passing of her husband, Willie Masucci; and to Mrs. Judy Gumbiner and family upon the passing of Mr. Mel Gumbiner. 3 Executive Chef’s Corner he clambakes were again our mostpopular season-ending events as members and their guests lined up to enjoy the Little Neck Clams, Alaskan King Crab, Black Tiger Shrimp and Cold Water Lobster (women only)! Thank you for the favorable feedback as I was delighted to hear all of your rave reviews! Holiday party time is quickly approaching and it is time to begin your company plans. Midvale Country Club is the perfect place to host your event as we offer a wide variety of menu options in the perfect size party room. Due to the popularity, we are open seven days a week during December to assist in accommodating your event. Members with a smaller staff or just looking to gather some friends around the holiday are encouraged to attend our annual Holiday Lunch Buffet. Reservations are available between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 18th for parties of all sizes. Plan ahead as your office and/or friends will truly enjoy the variety of carved and buffet entrees featured for the day. Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and my culinary team is eagerly awaiting your Thanksgiving Day orders. Midvale Country Club is your place to order from as we offer everything from slow-roasted whole turkeys to entire dinners, including stuffing, potatoes and dessert plus more. Our Thanksgiving package information is included within, so please be certain to place your order soon. It is also the time of the year when our Culinary Team of Chefs make their way out of the kitchen to assist with the building of Family Gingerbread Houses. On Thursday, December 17th, families will be treated to a festive evening filled with gingerbread and candies. The evening begins with a holidaythemed dinner buffet, followed by building and, the most important aspect, decorating of your gingerbread house. Midvale’s chefs will be by your side to ensure the frosting foundation is secure for all of your decorating candies to hold! In closing, I encourage your family to frequent your club during the holidays as you will not be disappointed. I wish all a Happy Chanukah and/or Merry Christmas. FAMILIES WELCOME… THE PERFECT DAY TO DRIVE YOUR CHILD(REN) TO SCHOOL 4 Golf News Golf Course Corner he grass is not always greener on the other side as we learned this year. Comparing conditions within the district was a pleasure as Midvale Country Club was ranked amongst the top playing conditions within our district. The judges were our members, guests, Rochester District Golf Association players and representatives, and NCAA Division III premier college players to name a few. The condition of the greens, approaches, fairways and roughs were all equal to or better than our local competition. Our greens were firm, yet receptive to approach shots. Fast but manageable to putt on and thick with density. Our fairways were also firm and tight. Our rough is ROUGH! Talk about density and coverage, our rough has it all. While it is a challenge to hit out of at times, it is indeed designed to be that way. Even our mowing standard of 3" in the rough has been maintained throughout the entire year. If this sounds like not much is wrong with our condition, it is indeed true. While there are some cosmetics that could enhance the beauty, the non-hazard playing conditions couldn’t have been better. The only challenge lies within the hazards as our bunkers/sand traps are beginning to show their age. It has been ten years since the renovation, and with the harsh Rochester winters, the liners between the sand and soil have become dislodged and are surfacing quite regularly throughout the course. There are a few answers to this concern, but none that are inexpensive. The Grounds Committee has been investigating a variety of solutions which range from removing the fabric liners altogether to replacing them with state-of-the-art polymer spray on liner. With seventy-two bunkers throughout the property, the manpower and cost of removing the sand and then replacing it will challenge our current resources. Further evaluations are being considered that would enable the process to begin in phases and within a more manageable budget. Until then, try to stay out of the hazards as they truly are a hazard to your score! One drainage project has been completed, eliminating the surface water along the right side of the sixth rough, near the landing area of many drives. Once completed, the area dried and firmed up like the remainder of the course. Expectations are that continued drainage success is projected within this area. Congratulations to the winning team in this year’s Greenskeeper T Revenge Closing Tournament: Chris Leone, Tony Acosta, John Raimondi, and Andrew Carpentier. This is just a friendly reminder to be cordial to your greenskeepers as they can toughen up the course conditions. Please remember that the golf course will remain open for as long as the weather allows. As nighttime temperatures drop below freezing, be on the lookout for FROST as it will delay the opening of the golf course. Members are reminded to check in at the Golf Shop prior to play to ensure that the course is free of frost and is open before starting play. Golf Shop News Congratulations to the 2015 Club Champions: Men: Paul Parrone Runner-Up: Tom Shaulinski Jr. Women: Jane Duke Runner-Up: Traci Petrillo Couples: Michelle & Craig Neal Junior: Seamus Hogan, Christian Bosco & Matthew Carpentier Senior Men: Todd Metcalfe Super Senior: Jim Barletta Men’s Closing Tournament, Sunday, October 11, 2015 Superintendent’s Revenge Tournament Results 1st: Chris Leone, Tony Acosta, John Raimondi & Andrew Carpentier 127 2nd: Glen Didas, Bill Sirianni, Jim Schrader & Scott Massie 129 3rd: Peter Shaulinski, Jim Kegelmeyer & Mike Kaufman 131 Thank you to all of the players participating in the Closing Tournament of the Season. Autumn Seasonal Rule Updates Non-Certificate members are now permitted to tee off on weekends before 8:00 a.m. in addition to the after 9:30 a.m. rule. Fivesomes are allowed beginning October 1st for the remainder of this year. Weekday Guest Day Policy For the convenience of the members and to allow for a completed 18 hole round of golf, members will be allowed to bring a guest anytime during the weekdays. Please phone the golf shop ahead to ensure a timely round. Frost Delays As the weather begins to become colder, the opportunity of frost increases. Because frost is unpredictable, we encourage you to phone ahead to check the status of the golf course. Due to an extended Frost Delay, play may begin using a modified shotgun start. This will be done as a convenience to the members suspended from play during a delay. This is also the perfect time to have our professional staff check your golf clubs for worn grips, bent shafts or other flaws in need of repair before the start of the next season. 5 2015 Summary of Tournament Winners Men’s Kickoff: Jerry McEvily, Mike Quagliata, Todd Metcalfe & John Julien Ladies’ Opening Scramble: Luba Drouin, Marcy Lazio, Juleen Squires, & Annette Fantanzo Ladies Member-Member: Julie Stepanoff & Jan Waters Memorial Day: Men: Jim Schrader & Gregg Genovese (second year in a row...) In order to gather the membership’s opinion, a survey has been created and will be sent to you for your feedback. Please be on the look-out for the survey as we thank you in advance for taking the time to complete it. In the meantime, please remember that denim is restricted throughout the club. For a complete description of our Dress Code, please contact the office and we will be happy to e-mail you a current copy to review. As the Seasonal Deck begins to attract more member dining, I must remind you that our Dress Code for the deck is the same as the Clubhouse. In the event that you have any questions, please call the Clubhouse prior to arrival for more information. Our Dress Code is not meant to penalize any individual member, but instead is in place to maintain the club’s standards as set by the membership. Please note that there will be social activities at the club when the dress code will be relaxed, allowing denim to be worn for that particular function. Please remember to place Cell Phones on Vibrate Only and to use caution when texting! 6 Come on out and treatyourself to a“bootiful” family experience! With the weather being a bit cold, tacklers were most successful fishing at the pond’s bottom. Lured by fresh night crawlers, the large-mouth bass had no chance as the lines entered the pond for the one hour contest. The most fish caught was six—by the steady hands of Mollie Sullivan. The smallest fish caught was reeled in measuring just over one inch in length and weighing just over five ounces. This fish was caught by Josie Sullivan. The catch of the day came when a three-year-old large-mouth bass, measuring over eight inches in length and weighing nearly one-half a pound, was brought in by Michael Soprano. As always, the derby was great fun--the hour of fishing seemed to fly by with all of the activity on the fishing lines. If you missed this year’s event, you will want to plan ahead for next year as the fish are sure to be even bigger yet! Jamie has been our most trustworthy beverage cart operator for over a decade! She was originally hired to work in the snack stand seasonally, but excelled throughout looking for more challenges and rewards. Jamie is a very motivated individual who is able to work long shifts with little supervision. Her memory is one of her most successful traits as she routinely pulls up to a group of members already knowing what they are going to order. While she doesn’t have ESP, she does have a keen sense of exceeding expectations. Jamie has been a key co-worker, delivering the best service to the members almost on a daily basis and with regularity. We are saddened to know that she may be moving on after this season, but very fortunate for the ten years of service she has worked. It is no secret that whoever tries to fill her void next season will be frequently told, “Jamie used to … “ Please join me on congratulating Jamie Converse on being awarded this Service Star! POOL Closed for Season Less than 240 days until Memorial Day 2016, but who is counting! AUTUMN RESTAURANT REMINDER Midvale Country Club’s Restaurant service offers lunch six days a week from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Lunch service is available Tuesday through Sunday. Dinner service is available on Wednesday Nights (Men’s Only Night), and Tuesday Nights (Limited Menu) from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., NEW: Thursday Nights from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Friday Nights from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. In an ongoing process to grow our service levels to new heights, Members are being asked to assist with recognizing excellent efforts from our staff. Anytime in which you feel that a co-worker has gone above and beyond your service expectations, you are asked to e-mail your service story to [email protected]. Each month service stories will be reviewed and one will be selected for the Star of the Month. This co-worker will be recognized in the monthly newsletter and will receive a Service Excellence Stipend. Minimum Spending Requirement Reminder This program can only be successful if our staff delivers and you follow up with an e-mail. We thank you in advance for your assistance. Member’s minimum spending requirements must be used by March 31st, 2016. The annual food requirement of $950 has remained the same for this fiscal year. This is only possible by your continued overwhelming restaurant participation. With your help, this program will build morale, generate co-worker loyalty, create a competitive edge and also make Midvale a fun place to work. All of the above equate to Membership satisfaction. To track your remaining balance, locate the area on the bottom left of your monthly statements. Your monthly statement will indicate your balance due with the following sentence located in the bottom right corner of your statement: “Post-Billed amount of $XXX.XX remaining, to be used by 03/31/16.” The above sentence will be omitted for any members who have surpassed their minimum spending requirement. If in question, please call the main office at your convenience. 30 NOVEMBER 2015 SUNDAY MONDAY 1 TUESDAY WEDNESDAY 2 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM 3 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM Hors D’oeuvres 5:00-7:00 PM MEN’S NIGHT DINNER 6:00-10:00 PM ELECTION DAY BREAKFAST CLUBHOUSE CLOSED BRUNCH BEGINS 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM DINNER 6:00-9:00 PM 8 9 10 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM CLUBHOUSE CLOSED BRUNCH BEGINS 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM 15 DINNER 6:00-9:00 PM 16 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM 17 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM CLUBHOUSE CLOSED BRUNCH 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM 22 DINNER 6:00-9:00 PM 23 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM CLUBHOUSE CLOSED BRUNCH 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM 29 24 THURSDAY 4 SATURDAY 6 11 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM Hors D’oeuvres 5:00-7:00 PM MEN’S NIGHT DINNER 6:00-10:00 PM LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM FAMILY DINNER 5:00-8:00 PM 18 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM Hors D’oeuvres 5:00-7:00 PM MEN’S NIGHT DINNER 6:00-10:00 PM LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM FAMILY DINNER 5:00-8:00 PM 7 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM DINNER 6:00-10:00 PM LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM 12 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM 13 14 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM DINNER 6:00-10:00 PM 19 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM 25 Hors D’oeuvres 5:00-7:00 PM MEN’S NIGHT DINNER 6:00-10:00 PM DINNER 6:00-9:00 PM FAMILY ARCADE NIGHT FRIDAY 5 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM JAZZ THEMED NIGHT 20 21 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM DINNER 6:00-10:00 PM ITALIAN THEMED NIGHT 26 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM 27 28 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM DINNER 6:00-10:00 PM THANKSGIVING DAY CLUBHOUSE CLOSED LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM THANKSGIVING TO GO 30 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM CLUBHOUSE CLOSED BRUNCH BEGINS 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM DECEMBER 2015 SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY 1 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM DINNER 6:00-9:00 PM 6 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM BRUNCH 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM 7 CLUBHOUSE CLOSED DINNER 6:00-9:00 PM BUFFALO BILLS EXCURSION 13 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM 14 CLUBHOUSE CLOSED DINNER 6:00-9:00 PM 20 21 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM 27 22 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM CLUBHOUSE CLOSED DINNER 6:00-9:00 PM 28 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM BRUNCH 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM 15 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM FAMILY HOLIDAY BRUNCH 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM BRUNCH 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM 8 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM 29 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM CLUBHOUSE CLOSED DINNER 6:00-9:00 PM THURSDAY LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM Hors D’oeuvres 5:00-7:00 PM MEN’S NIGHT DINNER 6:00-10:00 PM LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM Hors D’oeuvres 5:00-7:00 PM MEN’S NIGHT DINNER 6:00-10:00 PM 2 3 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM 9 16 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM Hors D’oeuvres 5:00-7:00 PM MEN’S NIGHT DINNER 6:00-10:00 PM 23 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM Hors D’oeuvres 5:00-7:00 PM MEN’S NIGHT DINNER 6:00-10:00 PM 30 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM Hors D’oeuvres 5:00-7:00 PM MEN’S NIGHT DINNER 6:00-10:00 PM FRIDAY 10 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM LADIES HOLIDAY PARTY LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM 17 DINNER 6:00-9:00 PM FAMILY GINGERBREAD CRAFT NIGHT 24 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM 31 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM Hors D’oeuvres 5:00-7:00 PM MEN’S NIGHT DINNER 6:00-10:00 PM NEW YEAR’S EVE DINNER SATURDAY 4 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM HORS D’OEUVRES 5:00-7:00 PM DINNER 6:00-10:00 PM LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM HORS D’OEUVRES 5:00-7:00 PM DINNER 6:00-10:00 PM 5 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM 11 12 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM 18 HORS D’OEUVRES 5:00-7:00 PM FRIDAY NIGHT DINNER 6:00-10:00 PM HOLIDAY LUNCH BUFFET 19 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM 25 CHRISTMAS DAY CLUBHOUSE CLOSED 26 LUNCH 11:00-5:00 PM
