Important changes to World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) 2015 Prohibited List and
WADA Code
As coaches it is important to familiarise ourselves with the following changes to the
Prohibited List and WADA Code that will come into effect on the 1st January 2015
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) 2015 Prohibited List which will come into effect on
1 January 2015.
Summary of significant changes:
 The change of most interest to many athletes is to pseudoephedrine, a substance
commonly used to treat nasal and sinus congestion. WADA has removed
pseudoephedrine from the 2014 Monitoring Program and it will remain on the
Prohibited List.
 For athletes this means pseudoephedrine concentrations found in urine above 150
microgram per millilitre are prohibited in--competition in all sports.
 Medications that contain pseudoephedrine like Sudafed, Codral, etc. must be
ceased 24 hours prior to competition.
 Other changes for 2015 seek to provide greater clarity to the List, with the majority of
amendments being of a technical nature, including re-categorising and improving
the terminology of existing substances and methods.
Further information about the new Prohibited List can be found on the Australian Sports
Anti-Doping Authority website and WADA website.
You can use the Check Your Substances tool on the ASADA website to find out the status
of Australian medications. Check your Substances will be updated to reflect the 2015
changes on 19 December 2014.
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) 2015 Anti-Doping Code which will come into
effect on 1 January 2015.
Summary of significant changes:






Addition of 2 new Anti-Doping Rule Violations - Complicity and Prohibited Association
Longer mandatory sanctions for deliberate doping (increasing from 2 to 4 years)
Increased time of storing samples for testing (increasing from 8 to10 years)
Whereabouts violations (reduced time -3 violations over 12months instead of 18
months period)
Increased focus on intelligence and investigations
An increase in investigation of support personnel in any cases of Anti-Doping Rule
Violations.
Ensure you are ready for the changes to the 2015 Code. Best way to do this via
undertaking the ASADA 2015 Code Learning Update. Further information can also be
found on the ASADA website and WADA website.

a tool to link newly classified athletes in the para-athletics system to existing coaches in
their respective state.
The network will also be used to bring para-athletics coaches together at major state and
national meets and a tool for the para-athletics department at Athletics Australia to
communicate directly with coaches regarding para-athletics information.
If you would like to be included on the national network for para-athletics coaches

Podcast
by Mike Hurst with Henk Kraaijenhof
Athletics Australia was fortunate enough to have the great Dutch sprints coach Henk
Kraaijenhof visit the country last week as part of an education tour supported by the
Australian Institute of Sport.
Whilst in town, renowned sports journalist and sprints coach Mike Hurst sat down for a
one-on-one interview which can be listened to here.
Additional resources from his seminars can be requested through Kylie Italiano, with
details on this above.
Henk is one of the greatest minds in speed-power performance development, having
also had the practical experience of leading Nellie Cooman to set a world record over
60m and “the” Merlene Ottey to breakthrough for her first gold medal at a world
championships over 200m.
Guidelines for Young Athletes to Reduce Injuries
How Parents Can Set Age-Specific Limits
by Sumathi Reddy, Published in The Wall Street Journal
Children are dedicating themselves to a single sport too early and spending too much
time playing it, say doctors who are seeing more children coming in with overuse injuries.
Playing multiple sports leads to fewer overuse injuries, lower burnout rates and better
overall athletes, experts say. Focusing on a single sport should only begin around the age
of puberty or even later, when a child’s body has developed enough to handle the
stress.
“The perception is you train early and only do a single sport and do as much as you can
until you’re better than everyone else,” says Neeru Jayanthi, medical director of primary
care sports medicine at Loyola University Health System in Chicago. “I think it’s pretty
clear from the injury and performance-data side that that’s a terrible developmental
model.”
In addition to acute injuries, such as concussions, doctors say they are seeing an increase
in serious overuse injuries, such as stress fractures in the back, elbow-ligament injuries and
damage to cartilage and underlying bone, known as osteochondral injuries. Such
incidents can sideline athletes for one to six months or more.
Overuse injuries develop over time due to the repeated stress on the same bone, muscle
or tendon. Children are at greater risk in part because their bones are still growing. Experts
say as much as 50% or 60% of injuries in young athletes are due to overuse.
