Spring 2015 Newsletter - Scituate Animal Shelter
T il s l News from the Scituate Animal Shelter • www.ScituateAnimalShelter.org • Spring 2015 HELP Program Update The challenges presented by this winter’s extreme weather conditions have highlighted the importance of one simple, but very special, program at our Shelter: The Mary Hooper Elder Pet Care (HELP) Program, which was founded thanks to a generous bequest from the Social Service League of Cohasset and is carried out by dedicated Scituate Animal Shelter volunteers. The HELP program provides assistance to participating senior citizens in Scituate, Cohasset, Hingham, Hull and Norwell by helping to meet certain basic needs for their beloved companion pets. Residents who are 65 and older and meet certain requirements are eligible to apply to the HELP Program for pet assistance. Our dedicated Shelter volunteers have braved the treacherous and unrelenting weather this winter to check on participating senior citizens and deliver much needed pet food and supplies directly to their homes. In addition to sparing the seniors the worry and uncertainty of traveling in bad weather to pick up pet supplies, the HELP Program saves them the expense as well – all of the items delivered by Shelter volunteers are free to the participating seniors and paid for through donations to the HELP Program. We all know how heart-warming it is to hear the contented purr of a cat or how the loving nudge of a dog’s head on our hand can remind us of their unconditional love every single day. A pet can mean something different to each of us — a reason for regular exercise, a guardian and respite from life’s worries, a social connection to others, a quiet companion or simply a source of comfort. The bond we form with our pets is truly unique, and it is even more important for some senior citizens as caring for their pet’s needs can also provide their lives with purpose and meaning. The bond between an owner and their pet is truly priceless, but of course caring for pets does have a cost. The goal of the HELP Program is to assist with that cost so senior citizens can keep their much loved and needed pets without forgoing their own needs. The HELP program strives to preserve that loving bond by preventing it from being broken over a simple thing like the cost of a pet’s food or litter. The HELP Program has been in operation for 6 years now and has served 97 senior citizens and their companions. The Program was initially started by a generous donation from the Social Service League of Cohasset, on behalf of Cohasset resident, Mary Hooper, who had a passion for the elderly and for animals. It has also received a generous donation from Suzanne Guaron, who lives in New York City and learned about the HELP program from our newsletter. John Marini, with Smokey, his beloved 4-legged family member. She recently told us that she likes that the program is “a positive step to help owners and pets stay together when the pets might otherwise have to be surrendered to the Shelter.” She also believes that “keeping their pets helps elders’ quality of life, so the HELP Program is a wonderful ‘win-win.’” Donors, like the Social Service League of Cohasset and Suzanne, have allowed the HELP Program to provide much needed pet supplies to participating senior citizens and their pets — in 2014, our tireless volunteers made 500 home deliveries of pet food. However, the need continues to grow and the requests for assistance regularly exceed available funding for the Program forcing applicants onto a waiting list. In 2015, we would like to increase the number and scope of participants that we can assist through the HELP Program, but we cannot do it without your generous support. If you would like to help us make a difference in the lives of more people and their beloved pets, please donate to the HELP Program by sending a check to the Scituate Animal Shelter and noting that it is for the HELP Program in the memo line, or donating on–line through our website at www.scituateanimalshelter.org. For further information about the HELP Program, you can call the Shelter or visit our website. Any donation, no matter how small, is appreciated by people like John pictured above with Smokey, his beloved 4-legged family member. Greetings from the Board... Dear Friends, Scituate Animal Shelter Our mission: To improve the quality of life for both the companion animals and the people of our community by providing shelter and placement for homeless animals and support through community services and education. “The Lucky Ones Come To Us.” Board of Directors President: Jean Ellen Sullivan Vice President: Thomas Poppey Treasurer: Karen McKenna Secretary: Charlene McHale Karen Borgelt Diane St. Ours Susan Hart Treasa Downey Cathy Duggan Debra Squires-Lee Kim Stewart (director emeritus) Director of Operations Kim Hallisey Director of Animal Care Ashley Davis I’ve volunteered at the Scituate Animal Shelter for many years. What inspires me most is experiencing, first-hand, the joy brought into someone’s life because he or she has found new love in the form of a furry, affectionate bundle of adoring devotion — in other words, a new pet! Stories of successful unions fill our message center with descriptions of lives changed forever because of love discovered with the right companion. John (pictured on page 1) is a client of our HELP Program, a widower, father of five grown children, who is quite accustomed to the sounds and activity that fill a bustling, happy home. The loved ones who once filled John’s life with noise and laughter have now moved on to busy lives of their own. John is closing in on his 94th birthday and, to him, nothing is more deafening than the long, silent days of being alone. John’s beloved beagle Maggie passed away four years ago and John imagined that no other dog could fill that void. John paid a visit to the Shelter (after gentle urging from a friend) and his story became the familiar one we see repeated over and over. Smokey left our Shelter to become John’s forever friend to the delight of his family, friends and all the staff at the Scituate Animal Shelter who assisted with making this perfect match. John is visited every month by one of our fabulous HELP volunteers who deliver not only pet food, but healthy doses of conversation, kindness and friendship, too. Speaking for all of us at the Scituate Animal Shelter who are devoted to furthering the mission of pet rescue and re-homing, thank you for your ongoing support of our programs like HELP. Without your commitment to this life saving, life enhancing work, we couldn’t continue to help the hundreds of pets who come to us each year and the humans who love them! With warm regards, Animal Care Supervisor Carissa DeBord Canine Training Coordinator Donna Culbert Director of Finance Peter Zona Jean Ellen Sullivan President, SAS Board of Directors Mailing Address: Scituate Animal Shelter 780 Chief Justice Cushing Highway Scituate, Massachusetts 02066 In 2014, the Scituate Animal Shelter was able to dramatically expand its Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program thanks to a generous grant from PetSmart Charities®. The Shelter’s TNR program assists with the humane trapping of homeless cats, covers the cost of spaying or neutering and vaccinating those cats, and then either returns them to their colonies or puts them up for adoption if they are friendly. Through this program we trapped, spayed or neutered, and vaccinated over 300 cats and kittens in 2014! These cats were taken in by our dedicated Shelter volunteers or temporarily housed with a member of our network of foster families, who worked with them to help them adjust to life in a home with people. Many of these were kittens, which can often be rehabilitated if socialized at a young enough age. Others were adult cats that were likely owned at some point during their lives, but needed a little TLC and a refresher course in “trusting-a-human again” to re-acclimate to life as an indoor pet. continued on Page 3 Running for Forever Homes Hi, my name is Matt Sullivan. I am 31 years old and I grew up in Hingham, Massachusetts and attended B.C. High, where I was active in several sports, including competitive swimming, skiing and soccer. After graduating from Hamilton College in 2006, the company I worked for at the time challenged its employees to enroll in the 200 mile long “Reach the Beach Relay,” one of the oldest relay races in the country. After running several segments of that historic race, which wound through the White Mountains and the gorgeous countryside Matt Sullivan with an adoring fan of New Hampshire, the running bug hit me! The race was such a positive and exciting experience that I have organized similar relay races at other companies to promote team building and contribute to charitable causes. This year I am thrilled to have the opportunity to run in the 2015 Boston Marathon on behalf of the Scituate Animal Shelter! Being able to run in the Marathon is a special honor in light of all that the City of Boston and the people who love this historic tradition and city have been through. Having the opportunity to run on behalf of the Scituate Animal Shelter is also very meaningful for me. My mother, Jean Ellen, has been a long-time volunteer at the Shelter and continues to serve as a volunteer, officer and Board member. Her example has helped to teach me the importance of giving back to the community. I am proud of the work that Shelter does every day in saving the lives of innocent pets and finding them loving homes. Please look for me at the Boston Marathon April 20th – I will be proudly wearing my number and the Scituate Animal Shelter logo! The Paws and Claws Are Back! We are pleased to announce the return of the very successful Paws and Claws Crew summer youth program. This wonderful, educational program aimed at preparing younger children to participate in volunteer activities at local animal welfare organizations, such as the Scituate Animal Shelter, was spearheaded by Hanover resident and animal lover, Alexandra Meader, age 12. The program is geared towards 9–13 year olds — guest speakers from other local animal welfare organizations that specialize in reptiles, marine life, farm animals and more, as well as demonstrations, crafts and interaction with visiting animals, are just some of the fun things we have planned. Graduates of the Paws and Claws Crew program will be eligible to participate in volunteer/fundraising opportunities for the Scituate Animal Shelter as they become available during the year, and will help the Shelter decorate for its Holiday Open House. Classes will begin on June 30th and run for 2 hours every Tuesday through August 4th. Registration will open in April. This program sold out very quickly last year and we even had a waiting list so don’t delay! Details and registration information will be announced on our website. If you would like more information, contact Angel Meader at [email protected] or 617.875.6381. The Paws and Claws Crew is also in search of volunteers to assist with program activities. Volunteers as young as 14 years of age may apply. This is a fun way to satisfy community service requirements. If you have a teenager interested in volunteering, please contact Emily at [email protected]. Meet Our Board Debra Squires-Lee (pictured, left) has been involved in animal rights since she wrote a piece in law school on the appropriate valuation of companion animals in the law. She became involved with The Scituate Animal Shelter through her children’s school, the Inly School, which chose The Scituate Animal Shelter as its community service project last year. Deb and her family fostered three kittens for the Scituate Animal Shelter last June — all of whom now live permanently with the Lees in Hingham, along with another cat, a dog and three human children. 300 Cats and Kittens Altered from Page 2 Trapped cats who were determined to be “feral” are returned to their original location after their recovery from surgery. A feral cat is a cat who has never been socialized and has returned to the wild. Most feral cats live their lives with little or no direct contact with humans. As a result of their isolated upbringing, feral cats are generally fearful of people, difficult to socialize and often happiest living on their own terms, typically in a colony with other similar cats. In some cases, feral cats have regular caretakers that provide for food and water— through its TNR program the Shelter is able to assist caretakers with trapping and the cost of spay/ neuter and vaccinations. If you live in Scituate or a surrounding town and have stray or feral cats living in your yard or neighborhood, please e-mail [email protected] or call 781-544-4533 Ext. 304. Due to the success of the program, we have almost depleted the money in our TNR account, so any donation to this wonderful program would be greatly appreciated. Save the Date! 1st Annual TAILS AT TWILIGHT Gala Fundraiser to benefit the pets and programs at the Scituate Animal Shelter will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2015 at the beautiful Black Rock Country Club in Hingham. For sponsorship opportunities as well as general information about this sophisticated soiree, please email [email protected]. 3 Scituate Animal Shelter 780 Chief Justice Cushing Hwy Scituate, Massachusetts 02066 Happy Tails At the Scituate Animal Shelter we often receive calls from the public and from high-intake shelters in other Massachusetts cities seeking a place for an animal with special needs or other characteristics that make it harder to adopt. These may be cats or dogs that are simply older and are being overlooked by adopters wanting a puppy, kitten or younger pet. They may be animals with medical issues requiring costly treatment in order to become adoptable, or that need an adopter willing to provide on-going medication. Some may be shyer animals who were fine in a home but don’t handle change well. For some of these hardto-adopt pets, our Shelter may be their last hope. The decision to take in these animals is always a difficult one – we need to consider available funding, space, the particular issues at hand and whether the Shelter is the right place for that animal. But whenever possible, the Shelter takes on these special requests. Here are the stories of just two of these special Shelter residents who went on to have happy endings in 2014. Molly, a 12 year old Sheltie, was surrendered by her owners when they could no longer care for her numerous medical conditions — she could barely walk and had multiple tumors. A visit to our vet and some testing discovered that sweet Molly Non-Profit U.S. Postage PAID Norwell, MA Permit No. 106 had an advanced form of cancer. Despite that difficult diagnosis, the Shelter was able to provide her both with the medical care to keep her comfortable and a placement with a caring family willing to love her one day at a time. Molly is very happy in her new home and even has another senior Sheltie (also named Molly!) for a companion. Bella, a 13 year old rag doll cat, was surrendered to the Shelter when her owner had to go into an assisted living facility and could not find appropriate placement for her beloved cat. For older cats used to a quiet routine, the Shelter environment can be very stressful, and that was especially true for shy Bella. She also came to us with a painful eye condition needing medical care. We were able to provide her with medical treatment for her eye and the love and time she needed to adapt to the changes in her life. This beautiful girl found her second chance with one of the Shelter’s volunteers. Bella has now been adopted into the volunteer’s loving home and will have no worries for the remainder of her golden years. Your donation to Stella’s Fund helps us ensure happy endings for our harder to place residents. Available for Adoption: Jake (above, with the brown spots) & Cubby (all white) are 4 month old brothers who came in because their family was allergic. They are used to being handled by kids of all ages. They groom each other and play together so we would love to keep them together if we can. AGE: 4 months old. BEST HOME: They are indoor rabbits and will need an appropriate size pen and exercise time outside of the pen. ADOPTION FEE: $50 ea. or $75 for the pair CJ — CJ is a 6 yr boy looking for a home that will tolerate his sassy personality! CJ loves everyone but doesn’t love being picked up (secret, lots of cats don’t!). Give this handsome young fellow a chance to show you that being “grounded” has its benefits! Steve — Steve is a 4yr old sweet and gentle boy. He’s the strong, silent type who loves other cats and loves people. Steve came in with a buddy who was quickly adopted. Now it’s his turn to get adopted!
