The 24th Annual Bid for Justice Auction Stanford Law School Saturday, April 16th 6:00 PM The very first annual Bid for Justice Auction took place in 1992. For the past 24 years, SPILF has upheld the tradition of holding the auction as a celebration of public interest legal work and to raise funds for public interest projects in the Stanford and local communities. Thank you for joining us tonight. Your support means so much to the public interest students and lawyers we fund, and the clients that they serve. Through a variety of fundraising efforts, SPILF provides financial support to students, alumni, and organizations working in public interest law. SPILF's goals are to: Bring legal services to those groups that would otherwise lack access to adequate legal representation; Strengthen the network of students and alumni involved with public interest; Provide training and support to students interested pursuing public interest work at Stanford Law School and after graduation; and Increase participation in and the visibility of public interest initiatives at Stanford. SPILF has "seeded" many projects at the Law School, including Summer Funding, Post-Graduate Public Interest Fellowships, and the Public Interest Lawyer of the Year Awards, all of which have become institutions of the public interest community. In addition, SPILF funds projects run by Stanford Law students that impact out community. Details of these projects are on the following page. To support students pursuing careers in the public interest, SPILF provides bar grants to graduating 3Ls. These cash grants assist them with bar fees and study courses, to ease their financial burden at the outset of their careers. All students starting positions that involve working for underserved communities or the environment are eligible. 3 Student Initiatives The SPILF Student Initiatives Grant Program supports student-run projects at Stanford that make a public interest impact in our community. In 2015, we received many great applications from a diverse group of applicants. The following programs were selected as SPILF Student Initiatives Grant recipients. 2015 Spring Funding Round Project ReMADE: An SLS pro bono initiative aiming to facilitate the successful reentry of people returning home from prison and jail by fostering entrepreneurial aptitude and skills for those who are interested in pursuing self-employment. Shaking the Foundations: An annual conference that brings together progressive legal minds from the West Coast and across the country to discuss present and future issues within the movement, explore the role of young lawyers, and encourage attendees to work toward social and environmental justice. Housing Pro Bono Project: Working at Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto (CLSEPA), Housing Pro Bono volunteers assist low-income residents with housing and landlord-tenant issues. Stanford National Lawyers Guild (NLG): The NLG seeks to bring together law students dedicated to harnessing the law as a tool to advance social justice and social movements. As the nation’s first racially integrated bar association, the NLG has a long history of standing with social movements that challenge systemic criminalization and marginalization of people of color. Stanford Law Veterans Organization (SLVO): SLVO is composed of all current and former military and military-affiliated members of the SLS community. In addition to providing support and mentoring to members, SLVO works with other student groups to promote military and veterans' legal issues to Stanford’s campus. The Stanford Clemency Project: The Clemency Project is a new pilot program at Stanford that works with Clemency Project 2014, a national organization that submits petitions for clemency. Participants file petitions primarily for nonviolent offenders with limited criminal records who received unreasonably long sentences under outdated, now-repealed sentencing guidelines. The Stanford Law School Student Animal Legal Defense Fund (SALDF): SALDF is dedicated to providing a forum for education, advocacy, and scholarship aimed at protecting the lives and interests of animals through the legal system. SALDF educates the law school and surrounding communities about forms of institutionalized animal abuse and engages in projects that combat that abuse. 4 Student Initiatives 2015 Fall Funding Round The Environmental Pro Bono: The Environmental Pro Bono is currently conducting research for Communities for a Better Environment, a nonprofit operating in the Oakland/Richmond area. Members are researching and drafting possible regulations for air pollutant emissions from local refineries in the area that disproportionately affect communities of color and low-income people. The grant allowed members to go on a "toxic tour" of the area to learn about the environmental impact of refineries on these communities. OUTLAW: OUTLAW is a Stanford Law School program that serves as a social, support, and political group actively combating homophobia, heterosexism, and any discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. OUTLAW hosts social events, advocates for and on behalf of queer faculty, and presents panels focusing on academic and professional concerns of queer students. Stanford Native American Law Students Association (NALSA): This student association raises awareness of Indian Law issues, provides mentorship, and builds affinity within the larger Native community. The grant supported the production and discussion of “A Sliver of a Full Moon,” a play with important educational and cultural significance. American Constitution Society for Law and Policy (ACS): ACS is a recently formed national organization of law students, law professors, judges, practicing lawyers and others. ACS seeks to restore the fundamental principles of respect for human dignity, protection of individual rights and liberties, genuine equality, and access to justice to their rightful—and traditionally central—place in American law. The Stanford Black Law Students Association (BLSA): BLSA is a student-run organization that strives to provide career and academic support for black law students, law students of color, and the greater law school community. BLSA received a grant to prepare and serve food at a local homeless shelter called the Opportunity Center, as well as to support a community celebration event with the Mural, Music, and Arts Project, a nonprofit based in East Palo Alto. The Levin Center: The Levin Center and SPILF joined forces to send students to the Rebellious Lawyering ("RebLaw") conference at Yale Law School in February. RebLaw is a nationally recognized conference bringing together practitioners, law students, and community activists from around the country to discuss innovative, progressive approaches to law and social change. 5 SPILF Members The 2015-2016 SPILF Student Board Co-Presidents: Bethany Bengfort & Neil Raina Treasurers: Zoe Friedland & Minh Nguyen-Dang Vice Presidents of Auction: Isaiah Deporto & Natalie Karl Vice President of Bar Grants: Alex Twinem Vice President of Student Initiatives: Katie McKeon Vice Presidents of Development: Elizabeth Costello & Dana Rehnquist Web Development: Yeseung Jang The 2016 SPILF Auction Board Co-Chairs: Karen Ding & Camille Peeples Alumni: Joseph Aronsohn Entertainment: Michael Halper & Clare Riva Faculty: Jonathan Berry-Smith & Savannah Fletcher Firms: Omeed Anvar & Leonardo Villalobos Food & Wine: Jolie Huang & Elena Mercado Inventory: Rachel Boochever Local Business: Andrea Donahue & Fiona Theobald Management: Chuck Roberts Marketing: Sarah Gilmartin Students & Social: Lauren Gorodetsky Venue: Emily Doyle & Sarah Catherine Perot Website: Daniel Chao 6 About the Auction Silent Auction The Silent Auction opens at 6:00 PM and is located on the first and second floors of the Classroom Building.
