His portfolio includes the cover page of the first two editions of the NParks Programme Booklet, and poster and banner artwork for events such as the SG50 Concert Series in the Park, Artists’ Night Out and OCBC-NParks Ride Safe Programme Movie Night. When he is not poring over vectors in Adobe Illustrator, he is involved in multiple music projects for the local music scene. Qn: Do you consider graphic design and playing/creating music your hobbies? If so, how much time do you usually spend on them in a typical week? My passion lies in the arts. I like to flex my creativity as much as I can. By day I work with vectors and photography; by night, I jam with my bandmates and write post-rock music. On weekends, I attend music events or hang out with my friends. We take photographs and edit them for our Instagram accounts, and work off one another’s feedback to achieve the best photographs we can. Qn: Who or what inspires your creative talents the most? I follow a few artistes online via DeviantArt and 500px. I also greatly admire local artistes such as Clogtwo, Choo Meng Foo, Deborah Lim and many others. Qn: Have you ever faced any difficulties when it comes to designing? If so, what do you usually do to overcome this? Many times I find myself faced with a mental block or feel uninspired. I usually take a break from the screen and flip through one of my favourite magazines. Working within the Singapore Botanic Gardens also has its perks – a quick stroll amid the lush greenery instantly rejuvenates my senses. Lim Ai Kheng Gardening Enthusiast At the Community Garden Edibles Competition held in conjunction with the Community Garden Festival at HortPark last year, Mdm Lim Ai Kheng emerged the winner of the ‘Longest Long Bean’ and ‘The Biggest Lettuce’ categories. Qn: How did your passion for gardening blossom? I grew up in a kampong, so planting comes naturally to me. When the Residents’ Committee set up the community gardens in my estate, my neighbours and I were happy for the opportunity to be able to plant again. Qn: As a gardening enthusiast, what else would you like to achieve in the next five years? I buy seeds whenever I travel, especially those which are new to me, and try my hand at planting them in Singapore. I hope to plant something which is currently not available here and to share the cuttings and knowledge with others. Qn:Tell us about your experience and process in achieving your results at the competition – how long did it take you to grow the winning entries? Were there any special techniques involved for the long bean and lettuce to grow to that size? 20 It was my first time attempting to plant a long bean, so I read up on how to do so and asked my seed supplier for tips. As for the lettuce, bigger gaps were left between each plant so they had space to thrive. It took around two months for them to grow to that shape and size. Unfortunately, I don’t have a garden at home so I decided to volunteer to pursue my interests and at the same time, learn from other volunteers. For instance, by volunteering for the Butterfly Habitat Enhancement Project, I get to see the butterflies up close and learn new things about them every week. I encourage people to volunteer so that they can develop new skills, meet new people and have fun while they’re at it!” Volunteers are invited for a plants-and-seeds exchange on this day. Participants can also attend organised talks as well as a networking session to get to know other gardeners. Pre-registration is required and participation is subject to availability. Featuring NParks Volunteers at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park It’s better to give than receive. Our volunteers share their thoughts on volunteering and the benefits of giving back to nature. Pang Shi Jie “I am pursuing a science course in university which does not give me many opportunities to explore the great outdoors. Volunteering with NParks gives me an avenue to get close to nature. It also keeps me active and allows me to give back to the community. I encourage those who have spare time to volunteer – it’s a great way to try something different while contributing to a worthy cause.” The registration period and method of registration may differ for each programme.
