I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your
wonderful introduction to the Vas Technology. My first
session sent me directly to the core of my inefficiency
to manifest and helped me to recalibrate the beliefs
stored in my heart and re-integrate to a whole new
level of Coherence. I feel more whole, more human,
more able to focus and to stay in balance. The
trauma of past surgeries and emotional loss seem
to be triggered less. My fear is way down and I can
move with far more grace and ease in my life. All this
with one session, the personal frequency water and
listening daily to the fabulous personal DVD. Thank
you for helping me to transform my life.

REIKI with Barbara Igoe
When Barbara brought Reiki into my life, so many
things began to work themselves out. It truly brought
me the realization that we live in the world we create
and by simple intentions we can bring about emotional
balance and strength that seemed impossible before.
Daily, I thank the Great Divine for all I have been
given; especially the gift of Reiki and Barbara for
bringing it to me.

“Yours was the third Past Lives training I attended and the first one I left with the
confidence that I could really do this on my own. Your clear, concise, step-by-step
approach de-mystifies the regression process and makes it amazingly easy to do. Count
me in on all your other trainings. P.S. I also (and finally) resolved a stubborn personal
issue that has plagued me for most of my life and that had resisted change from the more
traditional therapies.”

I am the top distributor in a company that is launching at the end of June. Our product is the only Nano
Technology Fuel Additive ever created. It is lightyears
beyond any product ever made, and saves people an average of 8-18% on their fuel costs while lowering emissions by up to 50% or more. This non toxic, eco friendly product has an 18 year track record with endorsements from the Chinese EPA, The Japanese, Chinese
and Italian Governments, The United Nations, Forbes
Magazine, and much more. This product works.
Because of the timing in the marketplace right now,

The Reconciling Force
by Scott Ripke
N TODAY’S SOCIETY there are
many reasons people come to a
school of martial arts. Probably one
of the most important reasons is that
people want to know how to defend
themselves. Chinese martial art is
exotic and people like feeling as
though what they are doing is special.
Kung fu is seen as spiritual selfdefense. Walk softly, act humble and
kick ass if required. The truth is that
human beings are born knowing how
to fight. Some people are better at it
than others and the irony of this is that
fighting has nothing to do with skill.
I started doing Kung fu when I
was fourteen years old. By the time I
was seventeen years old I could fight
very well. My kung fu was not very
good and I knew this.
Real kung fu only begins after
you give up the need to be a good
fighter. This does not mean it is not a
great art that can be used as selfdefense. A real practice teaches us
how not only to keep ourselves safe
but more importantly how to reconcile
difficult situations in our lives. Kung
fu is not how I defeat my opponent
but rather how I reconcile the opposition. This is much harder than fighting
and it is worth spending the time perfecting.
To do this is more than a skill. It
is an art.
In martial art when you reconcile
I
the opposition of an opponent it forces
them to raise their intention to a higher level. A good teacher draws out the
best in his/her students by matching
their force and then leading them to a
higher level of approach. Conscious
movement only begins when you not
only engage the head but the heart and
body also. A real art encompasses our
entire being, making use more alive,
more aware, more compassionate.
This takes far more time than learning
how to fight and is more interesting.
Fighting is easy. There are many
places where people teach you how to
fight, kick ass and take names. But
what does that do to our minds? Does
it make us feel safer or more paranoid? Are we better people because
can fight better? Any method that
teaches how to protect you at the cost
of others is a defective method. I love
to do free martial practice with my
students and other practitioners with
good skill. When we engage in free
exchange we are not trying to hurt
each other. There will be the occasional bump and burse. If one of us

“…But I Thought Rolfing Was Supposed to Hurt?”
by Kelly Stoll, Certified Rolfer
any clients who come in for a
Rolfing session are immediately surprised that Rolfing
is not painful. It is quite sad that such
a powerful art is so misunderstood.
Let’s unravel it…
Structural Integration, or Rolfing as it is commonly called, is the
result of the inspiration and determination of Dr. Ida P. Rolf. Dr. Rolf, a
research biochemist, developed the
theory and practice of Structural Integration over a 50 year period. Structural Integration, or Rolfing, includes
physical manipulation and movement
education designed to help bring a
body into alignment so that the force of
gravity can be used as a support rather
than creating strain. The manipulative
technique involves a series of sessions
that aim to balance and lengthen the
whole body, and create ease of movement while addressing the specific
problems of the client.
To understand a Rolfer’s approach, one has to understand the
nature of this amazing stuff called
connective tissue. Connective tissue
is what gives form and support to our

bodies. Imagine a three

a sense of its pervasive

Sylvia Skefich, D.C
tissue literally surrounds
each muscle, muscle fiber, and muscle
group. It connects muscle to bone,
bone to bone, and supports each
organ, nerve and blood vessel. This
interconnectedness means that an
injury or trauma anywhere can affect
the entire body.
Physical injuries, repetitive
stress and emotional traumas can all
make an impact into this network of
connective tissue, leaving the body
with the “imprint” of the event. After
days, weeks, or even years, we begin to
notice patterns of strain — difficulties
moving, sitting or sleeping. We notice
a new sense of fatigue, heaviness or
chronic pain. All these symptoms
can stem from an imbalance within
the matrix of connective tissue. For
example, lay a piece of fabric flat on
the floor. This fabric represents one
layer of connective tissue in your body.

The Road to a New Direction
by David L. Biles, D.D.S., M.A.
have been a health educator most
of my life. Teaching and learning
has become a lifelong passion,
passed on to me by the many won-
I
derful teachers, coaches, and band
directors I happened to meet along my
journey in the 12 schools I attended as
an Army brat from the late 50s to early
70s. In addition, I have had a lifetime
interest and study of the human body
in one capacity or another since early
childhood.
I grew up around many U.S.
Army hospitals and medical clinics
and became interested in health and
the human body while visiting my
father at his workplace, often observing many young men disabled by war
injuries—amputees primarily. Writing
this column is a natural extension of
my desire to return the gifts I was so
generously given by so many.
My journey to where I am today
also took me through many years of
study and employment in the fields
of exercise physiology and cardiopulmonary physiology at the Human
Performance Laboratory at UC Davis
and Northridge Hospital in southern
California. Dentistry has become another place to study the human body
and its intricate relationships, and as
I continue practicing, now in my 25th
year, I find myself more open to new
discovery.
As I delved deeper and deeper
into the chiropractic, homeopathic,
osteopathic, and naturopathic fields
I have discovered many other interrelationships between dentistry and its
effects on the human body at various
differing levels. With an awareness
of how the human body is acutely
and chronically affected by dental
procedures and materials in positive
and negative ways, I have come to
many philosophical and practical
conclusions that impact how I practice
dentistry.
Lately I have taken several

Then, place a ball underneath it to
represent an injury. Notice the ripples
that have been created throughout the
WHOLE of the fabric, not just the area
of the event.
The amazing thing about connective tissue is that it is plastic and
can change and release patterns of
stress. With accurate and receptive
touch, a Rolfer finds the areas of shortness and strain, and gives them length
and ease. Using slow, conscientious
and gentle pressure, a Rolfer literally smooths out the wrinkles in your
body’s connective tissue.
Unfortunately, many people
assume that Rolfing is painful and
harsh. Actually, most clients agree that
Rolfing actually feels good! In fact,
as we continue to learn more about
the nervous system, we discover that
trauma and injury are best released
when a person feels calm and at rest.
This is the environment that any Rolfing session should take place in. Feel

as Free Radical Therapy. Based on
the blood biochemistry interpretation
and knowledge and understanding of
the Six Sub-clinical Defects that all
disease processes have in common, a
logically applied Free Radical Therapy
program can be developed for each
individual patient.
Combined with the purposeful removal of stressful dentistry,
improvement in oral hygiene, and
restoration of the mouth with biocompatible dentistry, the mouth heals
remarkably.
“And”... as Sam Queen says,
“if your patients suddenly become
overall healthier and other conditions
resolve... well... you can’t be blamed
for that. You were only treating their
mouths, well within the purview of
your license.”

Cleaning Your Home Naturally
by Dr. Mercola
he cleaner your home is, the
unhealthier it may be, because
of toxic cleaning products made
from petroleum-based chemicals.
Many of these commercial
cleaning products contain dangerous
chemicals that are not listed on the
label. A manufacturer can omit any
ingredient that is considered a secret
formula from its label, and many of
these secret ingredients are toxic and
carcinogenic.
Beware that many cleaning
products are now saying they are
“Green” or “Eco Friendly,” and are
now on the Green bandwagon. This is
called Green Wash, but make sure you
read labels and research all product
claims. You can reduce your chemical
exposure by eliminating chemicals in
your home, and using only natural
cleaning products that are plant based.
There are many safe cleaning products
like Ecover, Mrs. Meyers, Seventh
Generation, Sun & Earth, and Orange
Plus. Even though they are more expensive, they are more concentrated,
and worth it because they are safe.
Another alternative is to make your
own natural cleaning products. Using
homemade natural cleaning products
makes “cents,” because it is cheaper,
healthier and non-toxic, and it is fun.
To clean with natural products, all
you need is:
• Baking soda
• Vinegar
• Borax
• Hydrogen peroxide
• Liquid castile soap
• Organic essential oils (optional)
• Mixing bowls
T
• Spray bottles
• Micro fiber cloths
• Vodka (optional)
Baking Soda is
great to scrub your bath
and kitchen. Put it in
a glass grated cheese
container with a stainless steel top that has
holes in it, and just sprinkle the baking
soda on the surfaces and scrub. You
may add a few drops of your favorite
essential oil to this. Lavender and tea
tree oil have anti-bacterial qualities.
Baking soda mixed with apple
cider vinegar is a bubbly combination
that has many uses. As a drain cleaner,
sprinkle baking soda down the drain
then add apple cider vinegar and let it
bubble for 15 minutes, then rinse with
hot water. This is a safer alternative
to dangerous drain cleaners. Baking
soda and apple cider make a wonderful
spa-like bath for soaking away aches
and pains and detoxifying. It also
cleans the tub and the drain. Baking
soda can also be used as a fabric softener in your laundry. To polish silver,
instead of using toxic silver polish, fill
your kitchen sink with hot water, add
a sheet of aluminum foil and baking
soda, and let the silver pieces soak
until clean. It is an easy and fun way
to clean silver.
Vinegar can clean almost anything in your house; you can add liquid
castile soap, essential oil (optional),
and filtered water, then clean floors,
windows, bath, kitchen, etc. Vinegar
can also be used as a fabric softener.
Never use dryer sheets — they are
toxic too. In the laundry, use vinegar
in the wash cycle to prevent fabrics
from fading.
Commercial window cleaners
contain butyl cellosolve—a toxic ingredient that is not listed on the labels,
so vinegar and water is much safer.
Use a micro fabric cloth, not newspaper, which contains toxic dyes.
Borax is a good laundry booster
and cleaner (it can even remove mold)
— and is safe and non-toxic.
Hydrogen peroxide is a disinfectant, and is safer to use than
chlorine bleach for disinfecting and
whitening. Lemon juice is also a
natural whitener.
Liquid Castile Soaps can be
found in health food stores and are
safer than commercial liquid cleaning
products.
Organic essential oils may be
used in homemade cleaning products
depending on your personal preference and tolerance to these scents.
Never use synthetic fragrances or air
cleaners.
C o m m e rc i a l f a b r i c re freshers also contain dangerous
chemicals, therefore, use vodka in a
spray bottle to freshen up chairs and
upholstery. The vodka is cheaper, nontoxic and the alcohol evaporates, and is
not harmful. The alcohol in hand sanitizers is harmful, however, and should
not be used on children since the
alcohol absorbs into your body via
your skin. Therefore, use only hand
sanitizers that are plant based from
the health food store, or just good old
soap and water.
Making your own natural cleaning products is rewarding and fun, and
you can use the natural scents that you
prefer while ensuring that your home
is safe from dangerous chemicals that
are harmful to your, and your family’s,
health.

Why You Should be Worried if Your
Kids’ Cereal is Widely Known
by Dr. Mercola
tudies have shown that eating
breakfast can have beneficial
effects on:
• Appetite
• Insulin resistance
• Energy metabolism
However, feeding your child
sugary kids-cereals is not the wisest
or brightest breakfast choice. Kids’
cereals are loaded with sugar and carbohydrates, neither of which benefits
your child’s health.
Obesity has become a major
concern for American children, with
sugar and carbohydrates being two of
the major culprits contributing to this
growing problem.
In the last two decades, the
prevalence of overweight adolescents
has nearly tripled, and current statistics show 16 percent of children are
overweight or obese.
Overweight and obese children not only face a heightened risk
of health problems—heart disease,
high cholesterol, high blood pressure,
gastrointestinal problems, and type
2 diabetes, just to name a few—but
they are also likely to suffer from low
self-esteem and depression as a result
of their weight. Being overweight or
obese can take a big emotional toll on
a young child or teen.
Sugar Baby
According to this study, one
serving of cereal equated to 11 percent
of the daily limit of added sugar for
active boys, aged 14 to 18 years old,
and an astounding 92 percent of the
daily sugar intake for sedentary
girls aged 9 to 13.
The problem with feeding your
child foods high in added sugar is
twofold—they contain little in terms
of vitamins and minerals, and the
calories they contain are not made up
of important micronutrients needed for
health and growth.
Reducing sugar intake should
be on the top of your list regardless of
whether your child is currently overweight or not, because it’s been proven
over and over that sugar increases
insulin levels, which can lead to:
• High blood pressure and high
cholesterol
• Heart disease
• Diabetes
• Weight gain
• Premature aging, and more
In fact, sugar is bad for your
health in so many ways, I’ve compiled
an entire list outlining 100-Plus Ways in
Which Sugar Can Damage Your Health!
N o w, h a v i n g
said that, completely
eliminating sugar from
your child’s diet is probably not reasonable, or
even necessary. While
it clearly will decrease
your child’s health,
sugar in moderation
is likely not going to
cause any significant
damage.
What do I mean by
moderation?
Well, something
on the order of five
pounds a year. This is
S
considerably less than the average
amount Americans consume, which is
closer to 175 pounds per year.
Taking a close look at the sugar
content of your child’s cereal, which is
consumed on a daily basis, is therefore
necessary. Just how much sugar are
you feeding your child each day?
One 2005 study that analyzed
the daily sugar intake of 5,000 toddlers
ranging in age from 2 to 5, found that,
on average, 2- to 3-year olds consumed
around 14 teaspoons of added sugar a
day. This number jumped to 17 teaspoons daily among 4- to 5-year olds.
That’s WAY too much!
However, I propose you take
things one step further than simply
switching for a brand with lower sugar
content.
Why?
Because of the grains.
How Much Grain Does Your Child
Need?
Grains are such common staples
that most can’t imagine them not being
good for you. But all of these common
items really should be avoided when
planning your child’s breakfast:
• Doughnuts
• Fruit juice and other sugary
drinks
• Waffles and pancakes
• Bagels and toast (even whole grain
organic types)
• ALL cereals (even whole grain
organic types)
Carb types can actually do well
with grains, but remember; only about
15 percent of the population are carb
types, at best. So for the majority,
grains and cereals should be limited or
avoided as much as possible.
Why?
Because grains rapidly
break down to sugar in your
body, stimulating insulin production. So you’re right back
to the issue of too much sugar
again.
I’ve written an entire
book on the subject of children’s health and nutrition
called Generation XL: Raising
Healthy, Intelligent Kids in a
High-Tech, Junk-Food World.
Not only does it offer lots of
tips for how to get your kids to
lead more active lives, it also
explains Nutritional Typing
and how you can help ensure
your child gets the nutrition he
or she really needs, setting the
stage for lifelong optimal health. It even
includes 74 pages of
kid-approved recipes
that satisfy even your
picky eaters.
What Else Can
Your Child Eat For
minutes.) Place sautéed vegetables and
cheese on half of omelet. Gently fold
other half of omelet over filling.
Breakfast?
My primary recommendation
for Carb and Mixed nutritional types
is to prepare and consume fresh vegetable juice, making sure to also eat
the pulp. (It’s loaded with so many
valuable phytonutrients, it would be
unwise to discard it.) Veggie juice is a
really simple breakfast alternative, and
suitable even for your youngest ones.
Juicing may not be the best
option for Protein types (like me),
however, so if your child is a Protein
type, you’d want to limit them to 10
ounces or less of raw juice each day,
and restrict the vegetables to lower
potassium varieties such as spinach
and celery.
Here’s another option; a kidapproved breakfast recipe, straight
from my book.
Vegetable Omelet
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms
• 1 cup sliced zucchini •
• 4 eggs, slightly beaten
• teaspoon black pepper
• 3 tablespoons water
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• cup rice mozzarella shredded
(optional)
Heat olive oil in a skillet. Add
mushrooms and zucchini. Cook over
medium heat until vegetables are
crisply tender (4-5 minutes). Remove
from skillet and set aside. In a small
bowl, stir together remaining omelet
ingredients except olive oil and cheese.
In same skillet, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil. Pour egg mixture into skillet.
Cook over medium heat, lifting with
spatula to allow uncooked portion to
flow underneath until omelet is set (3-4

“THE SUBTLE SHADES
OF
INFIDELITY”
A
Lecture & Cooking Class
an affair is the omission of his sexual
arousal in the story he told his wife.
Cynthia’s phone conversations with
Frederick may not have been much
of a secret to her husband, Garret, but
the secrecy of the content and, more
importantly, the depth of her feelings,
are what defines this relationship as an
affair. And lastly, Troy’s four months of
almost daily “chats” with Esther was
a complete secret to his wife, coupled
with his lying about being single. This
is most certainly an affair.
“The truth shall set you free,”
is no idle statement. If Ben would
have told Laurie the complete truth,
she might have asked him to leave the
house, rather than just the bedroom.
But with the whole truth out in the
open, Ben and Laurie could have the
greatest chance of getting the help
they need to have even more love. If
Cynthia was completely honest with
Garrett, true it would most likely hurt
him more deeply, but would it cause
more pain and suffering in the long
run? We think not. The deepest suffering is caused by secrecy, which slowly
erodes love. It’s the same for Troy’s
secret online “pal.”
So how can you have connections with other people while married
or in a monogamous relationship? The
answer is simple: include – and respect
the feelings of – your primary partner,
so it’s not a secret. Imaging sitting or
conversing with someone else, and
your primary partner suddenly walks
into the room. Would there be a way
for you to immediately welcome and
include your mate into the conversation? If so, then you’re healthy with
your boundaries. If you create a relationship with someone that excludes
your mate, or a conversation that you
wouldn’t feel comfortable sharing
with your mate (except of course with
a professional counselor or therapist),
you cause separation, secrecy, and
suffering.

t a Christmas party at his
office, Ben had a little too
much to drink and ended up
kissing a coworker in a dark hallway
where they were momentarily alone.
Pressed against him, she and he both
felt the growing erection in his pants
and, at the same time, the pangs of
conscience. Both of them felt embarrassed by their actions and immediately returned to the party.
Later that evening, after getting
into bed with his wife Laurie after
she had finished with the children’s
bedtime rituals, Ben confessed and
apologized for what had happened
at the party. However, he omitted
the erection part. Even though he
felt ashamed of himself for not being
completely forthcoming, he still emphasized to his wife that it was only a
kiss, and nothing more.
Laurie sat in stunned silence for
what seemed to Ben an eternity. When
she finally spoke, it was to ask him to
sleep in the guest room.
Did Ben’s actions constitute
an affair?
Cynthia had a special friend,
Frederick, with whom she had deep
conversations about life, love, and
often, her relationship difficulties
with her husband, Garrett. She felt too
ashamed to tell her husband just how
fulfilled and excited she felt from these
often secret conversations. Frederick
was Garrett’s friend long before he had
ever met Cynthia. It was not unusual
for Garrett to get home from work late
and, instead of dinner being ready,
Cynthia was on the phone with Frederick. Cynthia would end her phone
conversation shortly after Garrett
came into the room. For a long time,
Garrett rationalized that they were
just friends. They barely even hugged
when they saw one another. Still, he
felt increasingly uncomfortable with
their relationship.
Was Cynthia having an affair?
Troy happened to meet Esther
online in a chat room. He just liked
conversing online with her. There
was a subtle chemistry, or connection,
he enjoyed, even though their banter
was innocuous. They had exchanged
photos of themselves; he knew she
was single; AND he had told her he
was single. Assured that nothing was
happening despite his “little” lie, he
felt it was unnecessary to mention this
“relationship” to his wife, Cheryl, even
though four months of “chatting” had
been going on almost every day.
Surely this could not be an
affair!
So, what is your answer? Do
any of these three scenarios qualify as
an affair? The traditional definition of
an affair is having sex with one person
while being in a relationship with
another person, but Joyce and I have
found that infidelity shows up in many
different, and often subtle, ways.
The essential ingredient of an
affair is secrecy. If there is something
you are doing with another person,
feeling about another person, or even
thinking about another person, and you
are too ashamed or afraid to tell your
primary partner, then you are having an
affair. We’re not talking about walking
down the street and watching a scantily clad attractive person move across
your field of view – unless this happens
often and then you fantasize about
doing certain things with this person,
and it remains a secret and takes you
away from being with your partner.
Then it can be a problem. We’re referring more to the above three examples.
Yes, some of you guessed correctly,
all three are affairs. Ben’s encounter
with his coworker was more than a
kiss, but what especially defines it as

How to Create Lasting Results Part Two
by Karin Leonard
ast month, we explored making
change sustainable, and turning
self-criticism into support. Today, let’s further explore the nature of
change, and how to make it last.
Sudden Jumps and Steady Growth
Putting the hype of unrealistic
expectations aside, we are able to
take evolutionary leaps in our mental,
emotional and spiritual development.
There is the great magic of a sudden
flash of insight, or the far-reaching
effects of inner shifts deep in the unconscious mind.
However, the key to make such
L
profound change stick is the steady
growth and support that follows. Having a good day or being in a positive
state by itself doesn’t necessarily mean
we have really changed or reached
new levels of lasting development.
However, as you frequently make the
choices supportive of our intentions,
you guide mind, brain, emotions and
spirit into a new “groove” of being.
Transformation ripples through
the fabric of who you are, and therefore, affects all aspects of life. To
sustain development, it helps to set
up support.
Systems of Support
The nurturing ground
of continued change is
self-acceptance. Success
does not come about by
will power alone. Pushing
yourself too hard, or a self-punishing
attitude, does not go far. What works
is creating your best life because you
care about yourself. Nonetheless,
making positive change last does
require attention. We are creatures
of habit, and without daily focus
and helpful systems, even the most
profound inner shift loses momentum. For example, if work has been
consuming your life and you have the
overpowering insight that at the end of
your life you want to remember more
than your stressed days in the office,
that realization alone is not enough
to alter your lifestyle. The next step
is to design a sustainable rhythm,
balancing work with other important
taking normal breaths if your belly is
raising (becoming full) as you inhale
and falling as you exhale, you are belly
breathing. If your chest raises and
falls, you are breathing into your chest
and need to work on bringing each
breath down to the full diaphragm. If
neither the belly nor the chest raise and
fall, you are breathing from your nasal
cavity and really need to start working
on bringing the breath down through
the diaphragm. Remember breathing is
our Life Force energy, our chi, and is
so important for that mind, body and
spirit connection.

Ecology of Change
As you shift and grow, all areas
of your existence are affected. It is
therefore a good idea to consider how
changes in your behavior will affect the
entire system you are part of. How you
relate to your mate, children and coworkers might shift. Your work, home
and leisure could take on a new flair.
Most of this will likely be positive, yet
don’t be surprised if the people you
interact with resist your changing. It is
helpful to be patient and understanding
with significant other’s reactions, yet
clear in your communication and solid
in your boundaries.
In the long run, taking care of
yourself and cultivating the change
you desire, will benefit everyone you
interact with. When you are happy and
in harmony with yourself, all else falls
into place. The struggle falls away,
as you surrender to the beauty of the
journey, carried by the ever-present
stream of life…

t was late afternoon, the day
before Mother’s Day.
I was working out (“working
out” sounds better than “sitting on a
stationary bike in underwear watching
‘Dexter.’”) when suddenly our dog
Mousse started barking.
This meant someone was at the
front door. But I was in underwear
and also doing what no truly spiritual
person should do—watching a show
about a serial killer who only kills bad
guys (every family needs one).
So like the coward I am, I ran to
the front door and peeked through the
peeking window to see if this was a
human being truly worthy of my time.
All I saw was a young woman walking
back to her delivery truck.
When the truck was out of sight,
I cracked the door to see what package
had been left, but there was none.
Oh, well.
I got back on the bike, and about
an hour later Mousse started barking
again.
Again the peeking. But this
time, as she headed back to her truck,
I could see she was holding a large
gift basket.
Oh my God. A Mother’s Day
gift.
I knew it was too late in the day
for her to be coming back, and that
it would probably not be delivered
on Sunday. And she was about to
drive off.
Embarrassment versus Gayle’s
happiness.
I bolted out the door, stopped her
just in time, grabbed the basket and
said, “Wait a second. I want to give
you a tip.”
Too shocked to answer, she just
stood there. I ran back in the house,
got more cash than the gift basket
itself probably cost, and shoved it in
her hand.
My idea was to give her a tip so
large that it would erase the memory
of a 70-year-old in underwear. I’m sure
she mentioned it to no one when she
got back to Brown headquarters.
There are decisions we have time
to think through and decisions we
don’t (“Do I damage the car or hit the
baby quail?” Really no time to weigh
consequences).
Deciding whether to continue
acting from addiction is an example
of a choice we do have time to consider.
I
There are classic addictions such
as alcohol, smoking, recreational
drugs, gluttony, gambling and so
on, but there’s another category that
functions in a similar way that is not
readily seen as an addiction by society.
It is a combination of several small
addictions that function in unison with
equally destructive force.
An individual might, for example, periodically drink too much
and drive, gamble to excess, go on
spending sprees, eat food that he or
she knows is physically destructive,
and run up unnecessary credit card
debt. Yet these activities may not be
frequent or extreme enough to stand
out as classic addictions. I’ll refer to
them as “cluster addictions.”
The question that the classically
addicted must ask is the same as the
one required of individuals with cluster addiction: “Why—knowing that a
behavior is wrong—do I proceed to
do it anyway?” Therefore, the core
issue is what unifying motive underlies
these activities.
In the case of those who are
patently addicted and those who have
a consistent pattern of multiple small
addictions, the ego or dark side of the
mind is given preference. And in both
cases the behavior tends to escalate
over time.
However, although it’s the same
mistake, it can be made for opposite
reasons. On one hand, individuals
may increase the destructive behavior because they have chosen to side
with their darkness. In other words,
to betray themselves, to betray God,
and to betray their loved ones. (Classic addiction has been analyzed quite
insightfully in Dr. Lee Jampolsky’s
Healing the Addictive Mind (1991)
and Healing the Addictive Personality (1998).)
But another reason for escalating
both cluster and classic addiction may
be because the individual has a genuine desire to see clearly and to confront
firmly their own inner darkness. “I’ll
keep doing it until things get so bad,
I’ll want to quit.”
One symptom that this is the
motivation is a high degree of inner conflict of which the individual
is acutely aware. Alternatively, the
person who has simply decided to
enhance their ego will feel relatively
limited remorse, few second thoughts,
and little or no anguish. They just
proceed to hone their egos and can
Page 12 ▲ The Connection Magazine ▲ www.theConnect.com ▲ June 2008
become quite good at destroying other
people’s lives.
It seems fairly obvious that most
people spend their lives randomly
vacillating between their ego and
their divinity, and never make a deep
commitment to either, except perhaps
in the final weeks or months of their
lives.
The point I want to stress is that
if you fall into the cluster addiction
category and find yourself continuing to make the same mistakes and
recognize that both these behaviors
and your conflict are holding steady
or intensifying, this can actually be a
good sign. It means that you want to
get to the bottom of this and eradicate
it. Your approach is faulty, but your
motive is spiritual.
It’s true that, looking back, many
people recognize that true change
came when they hit rock bottom
(“bottomed out”). But that is noticed
in retrospect. You cannot perceive
yourself honestly and confront your
own darkness by setting the goal of
hitting bottom. One merely loses time
and hurts others in the process
One approach that works is 1.
Carefully monitor our thoughts and
feelings. 2. Catalogue or mentally
mark each ego offering to which we
are susceptible, and 3. Put in place a
plan to confront those in the present.
These confrontations must take
place on the spot. Whenever feasible,
we physically stop what we are doing,
carefully examine the ego thought that
just crossed our mind, and rip it out.
“Rip it out” may seem to make
the ego too real, but we must be honest
with ourselves. We have already made
the ego real. Now we must make the
Truth real.
Lesson 21 in A Course in Miracles is “I am determined to see things
differently.” This is a recurring theme
in most sacred scriptures: Look the
beast in the eye. Go off by yourself
and confront “Satan’s temptations” directly, as did Jesus. It is also helpful to
note the times and situations that you
are most likely to make a mistake and
to have a plan for each. If you make a
new kind of mistake, don’t wallow in
guilt, learn from it.
I am distressed by how many
people writing on spiritual subjects
make all this sound like a piece of
cake. It’s not. It requires enormous effort—and wholly consistent effort—to
get past our egos.
In my opinion there is no easy
way to wake up, but there is a way.
And the angels of God are with us
every step we take.

I have to admit, my
lack of healthy boundaries, and my
lack of sensitivity to Joyce’s feelings,
caused her lots of pain early in our
marriage. I created relationships that
did not include her. I touched a few
hot stoves, burned myself but good,
then learned some valuable lessons.
I’ve learned the joy of feeling Joyce
in my heart no matter where I am or
who I’m with. This actually allows me
to love other people more deeply, for I
love as two people, not just one. Joyce
does the same. We hold each other
deeply together, whether physically
together or not. As a result, people feel

Broadway Property Threatened by
Foreclosure
Unity Temple is taking a
spiritual journey it did not expect.
After serving the Santa
Cruz Community for over
80 years, the
church is in
danger of losing its property at 407
Broadway in
foreclosure,
with only the month of June left to
find a solution. During the development of an extensive project which
includes a new Youth Education Activity Center, the expected loan funds
were not received. One can say that
the sub-prime crisis impacting our
country has certainly contributed to
the problem.
Stopping the project has caused
a great loss to Unity and to the contractors and sub-contractors involved.
Money and momentum have been
severely impacted, and foreclosure
proceedings have begun. We are now
in a race to find the loan and donations
to save Unity Temple before it is sold
on the courthouse steps. Ironically,
the church is growing, the excitement is high, the vision is solid, and
everyone is still anticipating that the
building will be completed and that
with new space for children and additional rentals, we will succeed.

he use of cocoa products in the
western hemisphere dates to the
Olmec civilization 3000 years
ago. The Olmec preceded the Maya
Culture of the Meso-American region.
It is believed the Maya derived their
sacred culture from their predecessors,
the Olmec. Archeologists know from
Spanish accounts that the Maya drank
liquid chocolate. The word cacao or
cocoa comes from the Olmec. The
scientific name for the cacao tree is
Theobroma Cacao or “food of the
gods”. Mayan murals and ceramics
depict chocolate being poured for
gods and rulers, although it remained
a food for the ordinary tribesman. The
Aztecs also revered and used cocoa.
The cocoa that these civilizations were
using was a pure unprocessed product
much different from present day commercial chocolate.
The Europeans initiated alkalizing cocoa and adding milk in a process
called “dutching” in the 1500’s. This
has lead to the chocolate products
now available that are loaded with unhealthy trans fats, sugars, and a variety
of other chemicals. The processing of
the chocolate loses virtually all of the
healthy life supporting qualities of
cocoa. The cocoa is fermented, heated,
alkalized, lecithinized, and reduced to
T
an unhealthy product. Thus, cocoa has
lost its sacred status as a “food of the
gods” and become a candy.
The cacao or cocoa bean is considered the most pharmacologically
complex food source in the world. It
contains for example, PEA the love
chemical, and anandamide the bliss
chemical. The USDA rates the antioxidant value of unprocessed cocoa
higher than all other foods. The Acai
berry from the Amazon rain forest is
the second highest in antioxidant power. The USDA uses the ORAC scale or
oxygen radical absorbance capacity to
rate foods antioxidant potential.
Extensive research is revealing
the health benefits of dark chocolate.
The data suggests that many of the
benefits attributed to dark chocolate
are the flavanoid compounds found in
cocoa. Among the multitude of benefits
are cardiovascular support, cholesterol
lowering effects, blood sugar regulation, appetite suppression, and blood
pressure modulation. In fact, a noted
Harvard Medical researcher went on
national television in 2007 and stated
that he” wished all Americans would
include a flavanoid rich cocoa drink
in their diet.” He went on to say that
“don’t reach for the mug of cocoa
because a flavanoid rich cocoa product
isn’t one of them.”
Page 14 ▲ The Connection Magazine ▲ www.theConnect.com ▲ June 2008
“roller coaster.” We have had to face
hard facts, while still holding the vision we expect to manifest. In Unity
we believe in the Law of Attraction,
that in realizing any heart’s desire, we
must acknowledge the facts, affirm
the truth, see the desired outcome fulfilled, and then take any actions that
we can to accomplish the vision.
Myrtle Fillmore, co-founder
of Unity, did not ignore her tuberculosis. She spent time each day going
into the site of the illness, apologizing to her body for the way she had
spoken about it and treated it. She
spent hours speaking words of truth,
of life, of love to the organs, tissues,
systems, and cells of her body. She
asked the presence of Jesus to be
with her hourly to keep her thoughts
positive. She was fully healed within
two years.
Her example is why we are going public with our challenge. This is
not to emphasize that we are victims
or that we are a “sinking ship.” We
do not in any way accept or believe
that. We are willing to acknowledge
that we need help and that the vision
of the Unity Movement, and Unity
Temple specifically, as a beacon of
light the greater Santa Cruz community, is certainly worth fighting for
and donating to.
Your prayers, thoughts, loving donations in any amount, and
benefit ideas are gratefully accepted!

The good
news however, is that a
flavanoid rich
cocoa product
is now available. The
company that formulated this product
is MXI and the product line is Xocai
(pronounced sho- sigh). They have developed an $11 million patent to cold
press raw cacao. They also add high
antioxidant Acai and blueberries, in
conjunction with low glycemic sweeteners and turned what once would
have been a bitter tasting product into
a most delicious and desired super
food. Xocai has created a product that
retains all of the flavanoid content
of unprocessed cocoa much like the
Mayans once used. An independent
laboratory tests all of the Xocai line
and the ORAC rating is certified on
each product. These products have
some of the highest antioxidant content available on the market.
Clinical trials are in process at a
prestigious university and the results
are nearing release. Xocai is powering

as she wanders around King Priam’s

coming.” Or Socrates, the gadfly, stinging the rump of power with jabs of truth.
Or even Paul Revere, if horses were still
in fashion. You need only be a reporter
with your eyes open to see what’s happening to our democracy. I have been
lucky enough to spend my adult life as a
journalist, acquiring a priceless education in the ways of the world, actually
getting paid to practice one of my craft’s
essential imperatives: connect the dots.
The conclusion that we are in trouble is unavoidable. I report the assault on
nature evidenced in coal mining that
tears the tops off mountains and dumps
them into rivers, sacrificing the health
and lives of those in the river valleys to
short-term profit, and I see a link
between that process and the stock-market frenzy which scorns long-term
investments - genuine savings - in favor
of quick turnovers and speculative bubbles whose inevitable bursting leaves
insiders with stuffed pockets and millions of small stockholders, pensioners,
and employees out of work, out of luck,
and out of hope.
And then I see a connection
between those disasters and the repeal of
sixty-year-old banking and securities
regulations designed during the Great
Depression to prevent exactly that kind
of human and economic damage. Who
pushed for the removal of that firewall?
An administration and Congress who are
the political marionettes of the speculators, and who are well rewarded for their
efforts with indispensable campaign contributions. Even honorable opponents of
the practice get trapped in the web of an

EMOCRACY IN AMERICA is a
series of narrow escapes, and
we may be running out of luck.
The reigning presumption about the
American experience, as the historian
Lawrence Goodwyn has written, is
grounded in the idea of progress, the
conviction that the present is “better”
than the past and the future will bring
even more improvement. For all of its
shortcomings, we keep telling ourselves,
“The system works.”
Now all bets are off. We have fallen under the spell of money, faction, and
fear, and the great American experience
in creating a different future together has
been subjugated to individual cunning in
the pursuit of wealth and power -and to
the claims of empire, with its ravenous
demands and stuporous distractions. A
sense of political impotence pervades the
country - a mass resignation defined by
Goodwyn as “believing the dogma of
‘democracy’ on a superficial public level
but not believing it privately.” We hold
elections, knowing they are unlikely to
bring the corporate state under popular
control. There is considerable vigor at
local levels, but it has not been translated
into new vistas of social possibility or
the political will to address our most
intractable challenges. Hope no longer
seems the operative dynamic of America,
and without hope we lose the talent and
drive to cooperate in the shaping of our
destiny.
The earth we share as our common
gift, to be passed on in good condition to
our children’s children, is being
despoiled. Private wealth is growing as
public needs increase apace. Our
Constitution is perilously close to being
consigned to the valley of the shadow of
death, betrayed by a powerful cabal of
secrecy-obsessed authoritarians. Terms
like “liberty” and “individual freedom”
invoked by generations of Americans
who battled to widen the 1787 promise
to “promote the general welfare” have
been perverted to create a government
primarily dedicated to the welfare of the
state and the political class that runs it.
Yes, Virginia, there is a class war and
ordinary people are losing it. It isn’t necessary to be a Jeremiah crying aloud to a
sinful Jerusalem that the Lord is about to
afflict them for their sins of idolatry, or
Cassandra, making a nuisance of herself
electoral system that
effectively limits competition to those who can
afford to spend millions in
their run for office. Like it
or not, candidates know
that the largesse on which
their political futures
depend will last only as
long as their votes are satisfactory to the sleek
“bundlers” who turn the
spigots of cash on and off.
The property qualifications for federal office
that the framers of the
Constitution expressly
chose to exclude for
demonstrating an unseemly
“veneration for wealth” are
now de facto in force and
higher than the Founding Fathers could
have imagined. “Money rules Our laws
are the output of a system which clothes
rascals in robes and honesty in rags. The
parties lie to us and the political speakers
mislead us.” Those words were spoken
by Populist orator Mary Elizabeth Lease
during the prairie revolt that swept the
Great Plains slightly more than 120 years
after the Constitution was signed. They
are true today, and that too, spells trouble.
Then I draw a line to the statistics that show real wages lagging
behind prices, the compensation of corporate barons soaring to heights
unequaled anywhere among industrialized democracies, the relentless
cheeseparing of federal funds devoted to
public schools, to retraining for workers
whose jobs have been exported, and to
programs of food assistance and health
care for poor children, all of which
snatch away the ladder by which
Americans with scant means but willing
hands and hearts could work and save
their way upward to middle-class independence. And I connect those numbers
to our triumphant reactionaries’ campaigns against labor unions and higher
minimum wages, and to their success in
reframing the tax codes so as to strip
them of their progressive character, laying the burdens of Atlas on a shrinking
middle class awash in credit card debt as
wage earners struggle to keep up with
rising costs for health care, for college
tuitions, for affordable housing - while
huge inheritances go untouched, tax
America AWOL on Cluster Bombs
by Lora Lumpe, Foreign Policy In Focus
M
ORE THAN 100 governments, including all major
NATO allies, met on May 19 to begin two weeks of
negotiations in Dublin, Ireland to finalize a global
treaty banning cluster munitions that cause unacceptable harm to
civilians. The U.S. government will not be there, and is exerting
pressure on allies to weaken the treaty. Washington claims that
future joint military operations will be undermined if allied governments prohibit the use of these weapons.
Cluster weapons open in mid-air dispersing dozens to hundreds of small submunitions over an area that can be as large as
several football fields. According to the most comprehensive
research to date, the vast majority of confirmed casualties from
this type of weapon have been civilians. In the past 10 years, the
United States has used cluster bombs in civilian-populated areas
of Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kosovo. These weapons also have an
established track record of killing and injuring U.S. soldiers.
During Operation Desert Storm, U.S. cluster submunitions were
responsible for more U.S. troop casualties (80) than any Iraqi
weapons system.
“Cluster munitions do not know when the war has ended,”
said Mark Engman, Director of Public Policy and Advocacy at
the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. “Children stumble over them long
after the conflict has ended or pick them up thinking that they are
toys.”
The treaty will prohibit use, production, and export of cluster munitions that cause unacceptable harm to civilians. It will
also require the destruction of stockpiles and provide assistance
to victims and affected communities. Most of the debate at the
negotiations will focus on the question of what constitutes
“unacceptable harm,” with some countries lobbying for the
exclusion of more “precise” cluster munitions with self-destruct
mechanisms.
As the largest producer, stockpiler, and user of these
weapons in history, the United States has a moral responsibility
to take part in this effort to protect civilians from unintended but avoidable - harm during armed conflict and afterwards. Also
AWOL from the negotiations are China, Russia, Israel, Egypt,
Pakistan, India.
Meanwhile, national efforts continue to advance. Last year
Congress passed a one-year moratorium on exports of cluster
munitions. Congress can help move the United States closer
toward the position of the world community and its major military allies by supporting the Cluster Munitions Civilian
Protection Act. This draft law would prohibit the U.S. military
from using cluster bombs in areas that are normally populated by
civilians, and it would prohibit the use of weapons that leave
behind an unacceptably large number of landmine-like submunitions. (As written, the law would prohibit use of all but a very
tiny fraction of U.S. cluster munitions.) Senators Dianne
Feinstein and Patrick Leahy introduced the bill in February 2007,
at the same time the Norwegian government launched the global treaty negotiations. Nearly one-quarter of the Senate is on
board, and it continues to gather co-sponsors as constituents
press the issue.
The pope, Bishop Desmond Tutu, the International
Committee of the Red Cross, UNICEF, the American Academy
of Pediatrics, and the Christian relief group World Vision, among
others, have joined in condemning the use of these indiscriminate weapons. It is time for the U.S. government to get on board.
Lora Lumpe is the legislative representative on conventional weapons at Friends Committee on National Legislation, a
coordinator of the US Campaign to Ban Landmines, and a contributor to Foreign Policy In Focus. Printed with permission.
The American Freedom Campaign Agenda
(The American Freedom Agenda Act of 2007 (H.R.
3835), which addresses most of the issues outlined below, was
introduced by U.S. Rep. Ron Paul on October 15, 2007.)
The American Freedom Campaign is a non-partisan citizens’ alliance formed to reverse the abuse of executive power
and restore our system of checks and balances with these ten
goals:
Fully restore the right to challenge the legality of one’s
detention, or habeas corpus,
and the right of detained suspects
to be charged and brought to
trial. Prohibit torture and all
cruel, inhuman or degrading
treatment. Prohibit the use of
secret evidence. Prohibit the
detention of anyone, including
U.S. citizens, as an “enemy
combatant” outside the battlefield, and on the President’s sayso alone.
Prohibit the government
from secretly breaking and
entering our homes, tapping our
phones or email, or seizing our
computers without a court order,
on the President’s say-so alone.
Prohibit the President from
“disappearing” anyone and
holding them in secret detention.
Prohibit the executive from
claiming “state secrets” to deny
justice to victims of government
misdeeds, and from claiming
“executive privilege” to obstruct
Congressional oversight and an
open government.
Prohibit the abuse of signing statements, where the
President seeks to disregard duly
enacted provisions of bills. Use
the federal courts, or courtsmartial, to charge and prosecute terrorism suspects, and
close Guantanamo down. Reaffirm that the
Espionage Act does not prohibit journalists
from reporting on classified national security
matters without fear of prosecution

Healthy Planet
Stop the Spray — June Update
by Theodora Kerry
C
ITIZENS OF MONTEREY
County are breathing a sigh of
relief now that HOPE (Helping
Our Peninsula’s Environment –
www.1hope.org) has won its lawsuit
against the California Dept. of Food and
Agriculture (CDFA) stopping further
aerial spraying for the light brown apple
moth (lbam) until the CDFAhas finished
its Environmental Impact Report (EIR)
as required by the California
Environmental Quality Act. Unlike
April’s similar ruling in Santa Cruz
County, which stopped both aerial
spraying and ground treatments until the
EIR is completed, the Monterey Court
ruling will allow ground treatments to
proceed. Unfortunately, these ground
treatments include substances that are
not only toxic to humans, especially our
little ones, but also to bees and other pollinators, which is why I’ve chosen to feature the introduction from a recent report
that examines the effects of the CDFA’s
eradication programs on these very beneficial insects that play such a huge part
in the circle of life on our planet. The
authors of this report are Roy Upton
(Editor and Executive Director of the
American Herbal Pharmacopoeia, Vice
President of the American Herbalists
Guild, and a lecturer at various medical
colleges throughout the United States),
Daniel Harder (Director of the
Arboretum at the University of
California, Santa Cruz, with a doctorate
in botany, an undergraduate studies in
entomology, and was an avid beekeeper
for more than 10 years), Thomas Dadant
(a long time student and keeper of bees,
and the grandson of the bee keeping legend Pierre Camille Dadant who founded
the oldest and largest bee supply company in the United States, Dadant & Sons),
and Research Associate Lynette Casper.
The full report can be found at

LBAM Eradication Program: Potential
Effects on Pollinators and
Implications for California Agriculture
“Worldwide there has been an alarming incidence of Colony Collapse
Syndrome among honeybee populations. Some states within the United
States have lost up to 90% of their bees
and the trend does not seem to be reversing. According to the United States
Department of Agriculture (USDA),
one-third of the human diet is derived
from insect-pollinated plants and that
honeybees are responsible for 80 to 85%
of this pollination. Pesticides can severely impact bee colonies and are considered to be one of the four primary stressors on bee colonies. Microencapsulated
pesticide delivery systems, such as are
used in the LBAM eradication program,
are considered to present a
more specific and detrimental action on bee
colonies than standard
spray applications due to
the size of the microcapsules being within the exact
same size range (10 to 190
microns) as pollen grains
(15 to 100 micron). In addition to the potential of the
wings and bodies of bees
getting soaked in the physical sticky viscous liquid
associated with these
microencapsulated pesticides and therefore having
their flight inhibited, microcapsules can
electrostatically stick to the pollen gathering hairs on the bees. The bees gather
and carry pesticide-laden microcapsules
to the hive where the contents are fed to
the larva, brood, emerging adults, and
the queen. The pesticides encased in the
microcapsules used in the LBAM spray,
which include compounds that are
directly toxic to bees, are designed to
break down over a period of from 30 to
90 days thereby presenting a constant
exposure of pesticides to the hive
throughout 2 to 3 lifecycles of the bees

Declare your intent to know your authentic

when intent enters a Field already occupied

conflict, so the greater must be your unbending

can plug into directly. Where there is more than

temporal association and toxic mechanistic plausibility between the aerial

seabirds, all of which died within days of
the aerial spraying in Santa Cruz and
starting the day immediately after the
first spray. After the aerial spray of the

that is far greater than any real or projected estimates from damage due to
LBAM, which is considered very low. In
light of the severe incidence of Colony
Collapse Syndrome throughout the
United States and important economic
impact of bees on California agriculture,
it is imperative that State agriculture officials reconsider the use of microencapsulated delivery systems for pesticides
and call a halt to the LBAM eradication

Unfortunately, these ground treatments are currently being applied
throughout the Bay Area, which is
still scheduled for aerial spraying in
late August (www.cdfa.ca.gov), after
Governor Schwarzenegger’s special
laboratories “prove” that the
pheromone is safe. Hey, Gov! It’s the
“inert” ingredients in the spray product that we’re worried about! Let’s
not forget that the court rulings are
only temporary, until the EIRs are
prepared, and that’s assuming they’re
not overturned on appeal, which
means we all need to stay active in
our efforts to stop the spray. Stay
informed by going to the websites
mentioned in this article. Keep writing your local, state, and federal legislators and demand that they not only
stop the spray, but also remove the
lbam from the list of invasive pests
that trigger trade embargos. Keep
talking to family, friends, neighbors,
and workmates about your concerns.

Climate
Action
Teams
Program empowers residents
to significantly reduce their annual
carbon dioxide emissions. The program uses David Gershon’s book
Low Carbon Diet: A 30 Day Program
to Lose 5,000 Pounds to give people
a simple, straight-forward, and fun
way to become part of the climate
change solution by making specific
changes in their daily lives.
Teams of 5-8 households work
together over the course of approximately one month to calculate their
current carbon footprints, create
action plans to reduce them, report
on actions taken, and inspire one
another to reach their goals. The typical American household generates
55,000 lbs of carbon dioxide annually. While the Climate Action Teams
Program intends to reduce this
amount by about 10% in each participating household, Gershon’s book
includes many options for people,
including ways to reduce one’s carbon footprint to zero.
The program hopes to create
friendly competition among teams in
various sectors of the community
such as faith-based organizations,
neighborhood associations, and
schools.

Solar Santa Cruz
Be part of the process to develop a Santa Cruz Solar Program
On Wednesday, May 28th from
The City of Santa Cruz
has long been committed
to protecting the environment and reducing its
contributions to climate
change.
6:30pm-9:00pm at Louden Nelson
Community Center, the public was
asked to attend a meeting to support
the development of a Solar Program in
Santa Cruz.
The City of Santa Cruz has long
been committed to protecting the environment and reducing its contributions
to climate change. In June 2007, the
city council adopted a set of General
Plan goals and policies on climate
change; including the reduction of
community-wide greenhouse gas
emissions thirty percent by 2020,
eighty percent by 2050 (compared to
1990 levels), and for all new buildings
to be carbon neutral by 2030.
Local participants in the City
Climate Action Program will provided a
brief outline of several strategies to
finance or support solar investments and
then the audience was asked to provide
comment and expand on those ideas.
The Objective: Hear from public
and solar community on ideas to
expand the use of solar within Santa
Cruz. These ideas will be integrated
into the Solar Section of the Santa Cruz
Climate Action Plan.
To meet the City’s reduction goals
for greenhouse gas emissions by those
living, working and visiting Santa Cruz,
opportunities and incentives must be
developed to provide carbon neutral
alternatives. Options for reducing carbon emissions from daily living include
conservation and energy efficiency,
reduction through sustainable lifestyle
choices, and through the selection of
renewable energy sources.

UCSC Sixth-Largest Campus
Purchaser Of ‘Green Power’
F
OR THE SECOND year in a
row, the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency has identified the University of California,
Santa Cruz, as the sixth-largest campus purchaser of “green power” in
the country.
“This ranking underscores
UCSC’s commitment to reducing our
carbon footprint,” said UCSC
Chancellor George R. Blumenthal.
“We’re leading the way and helping
to build the market for renewable
electricity so others will follow.”
Blumenthal, hailing the recent
release of UCSC’s 2007 Campus
Sustainability Assessment, said he
wants UCSC to be a leader in sustainability and “green” initiatives.
The EPA rankings are available
www.epa.gov/greenpower/initiatives/cu_challenge.htm
UCSC’s leadership as a consumer of renewable power was made
possible by students who voted in
May 2006 to pay a tuition increase of
$3 per quarter to fund the purchase of
clean, sustainable energy in the form
of renewable energy certificates
(RECs). As a result of that student
initiative, UCSC buys enough RECs
to offset 100 percent of the electricity that powers the campus.
According to the EPA,
UCSC purchased 57 million kilowatt hours of
green energy in 2007-08
academic year.
UCSC contracts with Sterling

bon dioxide (a greenhouse gas linked
to global climate change) than conventional sources of electricity,
which include coal-fired power
plants.
According to the EPA’s listing
of 2007-08 College & University
Green Power Champions, UCSC
purchased 57 million kilowatt hours
(kWh) of green energy in the form of
RECs during the 2007-08 academic
year. To participate in the challenge,
schools must buy at least 10 million
kilowatt-hours of green power.
The campus is also working to
reduce overall demand by retrofitting
equipment, adopting energy-efficient
building designs, and developing onsite sources of renewable power, said
Ilse Kolbus, director of the UCSC
Physical Plant.

Four Easy Ways to go Organic
by Al Sears, MD
G
OING ORGANIC IS a good idea… Organic foods are
higher in nutritional content, from vitamins and minerals
to antioxidants.
They’re also free of pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, and
other toxins that cause hormonal imbalances, many kinds of
cancer, birth defects, and other serious illnesses.
But organic food isn’t always easy to find and the labels
can be confusing.
To make it easier for you, I have a few suggestions…
#1: Know What the Labels Mean
Trying to figure out which foods are really “organic” can
be difficult because there are so many different labels.
Anything carrying a seal 100% Organic means the food contains only organically produced ingredients. It must carry contact information for a USDA certifying agent; it usually bears
the “USDA Organic” seal.
If the label says Organic, it means 95% of the ingredients
that went into making the food are organic. The remaining 5%
must be on a national list of accepted ingredients. These products also have to contain contact information for the independent, USDA-regulated certifying agent.
Made with organic ingredients means the food contains
at least 70 percent organic ingredients. They also have to provide the certifying agent’s contact information. But the remainder of the ingredients aren’t necessarily organic. And they can’t
carry the “USDA Organic” seal.
Foods with less than 70 percent organic ingredients may
include any organic ingredients on the ingredients list only.
They also aren’t allowed to carry the “USDA Organic” seal.
#2: Buy Local
Farmers’ markets are popping up in a lot of communities
these days. Look for one near you. Locally grown produce is often
more nutritious than store-bought, simply because you’re getting
fruits and vegetables that are in season, and they don’t need to be
transported over long distances. That means they’ve ripened closer
to harvest, which makes a big difference in nutritional content.
#3: Avoid These Hazardous Foods
■ Milk: Commercial cattle are pumped full of hormones
and antibiotics. They eat grains laced with pesticides. And
they’re simply diseased animals. All of that stuff gets concentrated in their milk. The USDA performed analyses of commercial milk in 2004 and found pesticide residues in all samples
tested.1 Organic milk is readily available in most supermarkets.
Make this a priority purchase.
■ Peaches/Apples: These two fruits contained the highest concentration of pesticides of 45 kinds of produce the
Environmental Working Group, a non-profit consumer health
organization. They used the USDA’s own analysis to rank food
safety. Avoid commercial versions of these fruits. Even washing won’t offer you (or your children) enough protection.2
■ Peanut Butter: Kids love it. Unfortunately, more than
99 percent of peanut farmers use conventional farming techniques in this country, including fungicides and other toxins.3
So skip the Skippy – it’s bad for you and your children.
■ Imported Produce: Many fruits and vegetables out of
season in our hemisphere are in season in South America.
Blueberries, tomatoes, grapes and other produce often come
from Chile, Argentina, or Peru during the winter months. Steer
clear of them. Many have far more pesticides and other dangerous chemicals than domestic varieties.
#4: Explore Your Options
Here are a few web sites to find out where you can get
healthy, nutritious foods. If you’re interested in finding grassfed beef (which I strongly recommend over commercial beef),
check out www.localharvest.org and search for healthy ranches according to your zip code. My personal favorite is US
Wellness Meats: www.grasslandbeef.com.
The Environmental Working Group also offers sound
advice and information on food safety: www.foodnews.org.
They offer a great list of fruits and vegetables and the amount of
pesticides they contain, along with free guides and news updates.
You can also look for a farmer’s market near you. Use
this web site hosted by the Community Alliance with Family
Farmers: www.caff.org.

fooled.”

YALURONIC ACID — Has the ability
to hold up to 100 times its own weight
in water. It is responsible for retaining
moisture in the skin and fills the space between
collagen and elastin fibers leading to the skin’s
plumpness. Levels of Hyaluronic Acid decline
with age due to exposure to free radicals; women
over age fifty are estimated to have half the
amount they had in their youth. It is an ideal
ingredient in any skincare
product. Hyaluronic Acid
is a natural substance and
hydrator, and a wonderful
moisturizer, it is light and
does not clog pores therefore
is good for oily and acne
prone skin.
THE BENEFITS OF FACIAL TONING
As the skin ages, its ability to regenerate new
tissues slows and the skin’s natural moisturizing
ability begins to fail. Also underlying muscles
slacken as they age and loose tone, thereby creating a loose platform
for the over-lying skin
resulting in wrinkles
and sagging.
The Bio Therapeutic Facial Toning
machine stimulates the cells in the skin and
muscles with low level electrical impulses similar
to the body’s own signals. These impulses cause
dormant cells to regenerate, moisture to infiltrate
drying skin layers, increases collagen production
and encourages muscles to assume nearly original shape and tone by electrically retraining them.
Facial Toning is also advantageous after cosmetic
surgery because plastic surgery does not re-tone
skin and muscles and the process may be used to
restore and heal surgically altered skin.
OATS — Great for health in general, have
been used in skincare since ancient Egyptian
times. The oat is the only cereal containing
a legume-like protein called avenalin. Colloidal oatmeal is prepared from de-hulled oats
and ground into a fine powder. It retains the
moisturizing effects of whole oats but disperses
more easily in water. The moisturizing benefits
are appreciated by leading spas and producers of
skincare formulas, and it is added to commercial
cream and lotions.

very woman deserves to have perfect
skin... so, wouldn’t it be great if the world
always saw the youthful and vivacious
woman with perfect skin? Let’s get started right
now to shape and change those minor things that
lead to signs of aging.
Ready to start turning back your age?
Here are some simple tips to help you look and
feel younger.
1. Sit Up Straight
“People with good posture are seen as
younger, more confident, and happier than those
who slouch, round their shoulders, or tilt to one
side,” according to Paul D’Arezzo, MD, a certified emergency physician in Colorado Springs,
CO. You’ll not only look better, you’ll feel better
too! Good posture prevents muscle strain and can
help eliminate tension headaches caused by strain
on the neck. Think about taking a regular yoga or
Pilates class to strengthen core muscles in your
abdomen, pelvis, and lower back. If you spend
long hours seated at your desk, remember to create several brief exercises to do at regular breaks
to relax, stretch and firm your muscles.
2. Darken and Emphasize Your Brows
“When brows are thin and light, they make
your features disappear, adding years to even the
youngest looking face,” says Damone Roberts, a
celebrity eyebrow artist and costar of TLC’s 10
Years Younger. Cleanse your face in the morning,

grinding oats in a blender (the resulting powder
should be kept in an airtight container). To one
half or one teaspoon of oat powder add enough
water to make a milky liquid and cleanse the
face. This is excellent for oily and acne skin and
should be followed with a toner or witch-hazel.
Oats also make a soothing bath.
BUCKWHEAT — You may want to consider buckwheat as part of your skincare regimen.
It seems to have UV-protective benefits for the
skin, namely anti-oxidant activity against the
proliferation of skin cancer cells. German researchers used an extract from buckwheat herb
and compared it to pure rutin, a type of plant
based anti-oxidant, as well as a commercial
UV-absorbing agent. The buckwheat derived
antioxidant demonstrated higher photo protection
than either tested extract.

followed by your moisturizer. Then fill in sparse
spots in your brow to create the illusion of thickness. We associate youthfulness and confidence
with darker, fuller brows.
3. Follow A Daily Skin Care Routine
Caring for your skin twice a day can
reverse the effects of time but tightening, moisturizing and lifting the dermis of your skin.
Choose a cleanser specifically for your skin
type along with a moisturizer to support your
skin through the day. Don’t forget to apply
a toxic free SPF day cream to protect against
UVA/UVB rays throughout the day. Cleansing and moisturizing again before bed will
support your skin as it rejuvenates during the
night... leaving you with perfect, radiant skin.
4. Stop Smoking
Smoking can shorten a woman’s life by 14
1/2 years, according to the CDC. It also causes
excessive wrinkling around the eyes and mouth,
along with a grayish complexion. “Your skin
may be able to repair itself somewhat from the
damage,” says Patricia Farris, MD, an assistant
clinical professor of dermatology at Tulane
University. Using skin care products, like Chaé
Organics, which are rich in nutrients, will help
restore the glow and radiance to your skin.
5. Brighten Your Smile
Our smiles are a beacon for impressions
about age. Since enamel wears over time and
darkens, a dull colored smile is connected with
age. A smile that is bright white is connected
with youth and good health. Many of us have
lifestyle habits that affect the way our teeth appear to others – including habits which stain our
teeth like drinking coffee, red wine, tea, etc. Not
only do we need to cut back the habits,
but a trip to the dentist to have teeth
professionally cleaned is important to
overall health. And don’t forget the
daily brushing and flossing.

Caring For Your Older Pets
by Anne Singer
s dogs and cats get older, they
face a number of health issues. “You are as old as you
feel” applies to dogs and cats as it
does to humans. Older dogs and cats
develop special needs as their bodies
begin to slow down. They become less
active and slower. They may develop
arthritis, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, digestive disorders, deafness and
cataracts.
Smaller breeds live longer than
larger breeds. Mixed breeds live a little
longer than purebreds. Small dogs are
considered seniors at about 12 years
of age, large dogs at 6-8 years of age.
Cats are not considered seniors until
10 to 12 years of age.
The better your pet is cared
for in its youth and middle age, the
better will be its golden years. Just
like humans, dogs and cats, as they
age, have an increased likelihood of
developing medical problems. The
most important thing an owner can
do for an older pet is to care enough
to pay attention. Early diagnosis and
treatment of most medical conditions
affords the best chance for successful
management.
You should keep your eye on
your pet’s eating, drinking and toilet
habits. Know them well enough to

Poisoning is a terrible way
to die. Sometimes death comes instantly—other times it is horrific
and can take hours.
That’s why Defenders of Wildlife works so hard to prevent the
misuse of pesticides and reduce the
use of poisons that can inadvertently
harm our imperiled wildlife.
Rick Flory and Lee Robert at
the Earth Friends Wildlife Foundation
have generously agreed to match every

this an especially great time to give.
Deadly poisons designed to kill
coyotes have also killed swift foxes,
wolves and other imperiled wildlife—as well as family dogs.
These lethal toxins are a
danger to children and others who

private lands.
Sodium cyanide, used in lethal

some of the deadliest compounds

have relied on these poisons to target

Defenders of Wildlife is working hard to keep these and other

An excellent way to monitor
your dog’s condition is to groom
him/her at least once a week. If nothing
else, you will stimulate the coat and
skin into better health, as well as give
it some loving attention and physical
pleasure. An older dog getting less exercise doesn’t wear down the nails the
way it did in earlier days, so these will
need to be trimmed more often.
Because an older cat grooms
itself less often, he/she can’t cope as
well with swallowed hair. Frequent
brushing is helpful and appreciated.
Experts agree that older pets require more frequent and smaller meals
of higher quality ingredients.
A great part of caring for your
dog in its old age is simply understanding the changes it is experiencing,
psychological as well as physical.
Expect its senses to deteriorate to
some degree and don’t punish it for
disobedience when it just didn’t hear
your command. Because its sight and
hearing aren’t as keen, it can become
confused in unfamiliar surroundings
and would probably much prefer to
be home where it knows the position
of everything without having to see
it. Travel, a new home or a hospital
stay could be more traumatic for your
pet now.
Stiff muscles and arthritis are
almost inevitable, so don’t ask your pet
life—and the people and pets that
live nearby.
Right now we’re... petitioning
EPA’s top official, Stephen Johnson,
to ban toxic poisons like sodium
cyanide and the deadly Compound
1080 (used in livestock collars to kill
coyotes) — just one teaspoon of Compound 1080 can kill up to 100 people.
Already, nearly 46,500 people like
you have signed on to this important
petition.
Preparing to fight a prairie
dog poisoning plan in the National
Grasslands of South Dakota and Nebraska. The U.S. Forest Service could
issue their decision on this deadly plan
in the coming weeks. More than prairie
dogs stand to suffer from poisoning—the entire grassland ecosystem
is at risk. Hawks, badgers, swift foxes
and the highly endangered
black-footed ferret depend on
prairie dogs for food or their
burrows to survive.
Solving problems on
the ground. We’re working
with ranchers, Native American groups and public lands

of the American Prairie and
reduce human conflicts with
prairie dogs and other wildlife
to ensure alternatives to lethal
poisonings.
Just last week, Jonathan Proctor, Defenders’ Great

activities are going to cause it pain.
Your pet’s temper will be shorter and
will have less tolerance of irritating
intrusions into its set ways.
Your dog can spend happy,
active years with you if you love it
enough to devote a little extra care.
Regular, gentle exercise is as
important to your pet’s health now
as when it was younger. Getting up
and moving will improve the circulation and digestion, exercise heart and
lungs, and relieve arthritis stiffness
that is aggravated by lying in one
place for too long. You are the single
greatest factor determining how long
your pet will live and an old friend is
irreplaceable.

hile a bit uneven, and the momentum sags at times, there are plenty
of major laughs here. The outrageous humor of the script (written by Michael
McCullers who also co-wrote the Austin
Powers screenplays), and the dynamic duo
performances of the incorrigible Tina Fey and
sassy Amy Poehler, both of Saturday Night
Live fame, hold together a wild treatment of
a hot topic: surrogate motherhood. Poehler
plays low-life “trailer trash” better than anyone could, and the crude and sexual jokes
work well, even in Philadelphia. There’s also
a bold attempt to parody modern societal
trends, such as overpriced organic food, with
mixed results (1 hr 36 min).

Yours truly was one of the judges for
the Your Music Olympicks Santa Cruz “Best
Guitarist” shred-off on May 9th. Judges
gave scores on skill, creativity, stage presence, audience response, and courage.
Winners were GOLD-Dylan Rosenberg of
Archer, SILVER-Jake Nielsen of FUBAR,
BRONZE-Daniel Christensen of The Moderna Complex. My personal scorecard was
Jake Nielsen of FUBAR, followed by Daniel
Christensen of The Moderna Complex, and
Dave Montanari of 3upFront. The band
Sapos Muertos also played with solid bass
playing Seth Millwood!
I went to The Pat McCormack Group
CD Release Party, I have not heard the CD
but this group is outstanding. They only play
instrumentals. For me you have to be great to
be so entertaining without any vocals.
Your Music Olympicks Santa Cruz “Live
Performance” event winners were GOLDCylinder, SILVER-Honest Mistake, and
BRONZE-My Stupid Brother. My picks were
Who’s Holdin’ on top with their extraordinary
pink haired trumpeter, followed by The Devil
Himself, aka Dave, their singer, and in 3rd,
My Stupid Brother, very young guys with
great potential.

Astrology for June 2008
W
indy Gemini continues into
June with Mars in fiery Leo and
Jupiter in the dry earth sign of
Capricorn. Mercury is retrograde for
the 1st 3 weeks of June, ideally suited
for review of ideas, writing, and communications. During April, and May we
experienced the power of the grand earth
trine involving the planet of destruction,
Pluto, as it transforms the Earth and
structures we’ve built, Saturn. Now, planets aligning in Gemini, and emphasis on
Chiron, the wounded healer, we feel the
suffering of humanity and our challenge
to be united. The new moon in talkative
and info packing Gemini takes place on
the 3rd, with the full moon taking place
on the 18th, packing a strong dose of
intense and transformative energy. The
Summer Solstice arrives on June 20th,
when the Sun enters Cancer, continuing
the potency of the full moon.
With Mercury retrograde, this
is the perfect time for the delegates to
review the merits of the candidates and
come to conclusions. Astrologically, we
will see Hilary Clinton take a stand for
the strength of her candidacy. This is a
particularly intense and difficult time for
her. Yet she will show her strength and
tenacity. Obama finds unexpected situations delaying his schedules and actions,
yet his leadership will also be strong.
The planet Uranus is a key player
in all the candidates’ charts, demanding patience. Both Obama and Clinton
will enter a challenging situation where
great thoughtfulness is needed. Mercury
retrograde can be useful to reviewing
the Florida and Michigan delegate situation.
Twelve opportunities for
June:
Aries (Mar 20-Apr 19): This is a strong
time to review your communication patterns and how your thinking sets up how
you perceive your world. Balance your
needs and expression with your awareness of others and the community. Continue to be open to changes at work and
in career. Don’t push too hard for your own
needs; rather see if you are a good fit for
the needs and goals of the situation.
Taurus (Apr 20-May 20): This month,
take stock of your finances, review your
goals. You are ready to work hard for
what you want to accomplish. Yet some
unexpected situations may challenge you.
Rely on your communication strengths,
your ability to value yourself, and how
you connect with people. There are many
sensitive people involved in the situation.
Transformation happens at the end of
the month.
Gemini (May 21-Jun 20): With Mercury retrograde in Gemini, take this
month to turn inward, reflect on the last
nine months and what has evolved. Be
aware that unexpected situations may
cause some challenge, but know that a
larger perspective on your life is breaking
through because of it. Some deep healing
can take place this month, affecting your
belief system.
Cancer (Jun 21–Jul 21): Begin the
month by completing projects, home
situations, taking time to listen deeply to
yourself. As a Cancer, you may not communicate what needs to be articulated.
Ask yourself, is there something I need
to say? At the full moon on June 18th,
enjoyment is highlighted, perfect timing
for vacation.
Leo (Jul 22 – Aug 22): With Mars now
in Leo, since May 9th, you are able to
experience your plans and goals moving
forward. Review of how you communicate
with others is very important now. There
is the potential for healing in relationship
and seeing the true nature of the wounds.
New communication patterns will assist
healing.
Virgo (Aug 23-Sep 22): Since Saturn’s
been transiting Virgo (beginning last fall);
you have had to face your life and your
responsibilities head on. If you have given
yourself enough space to do that, then
significant insights are revealed. This is a
great time for you to edit your writing and
to communicate to others from a place
of wisdom. Be sure not to take partners
for granted.
Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22): This is an excellent month for you to enjoy travel, make
travel plans, or take up study, perhaps
traveling to a place where you study.
Changes at work can appear suddenly.

n our world today of change, uncertainty, speed, complexity, diversity and
even chaos, how do we make correct
decisions to navigate our lives? While
the oracle of tarot gives us a general map
of possibilities, it is our own personal intuition —an immediate and comprehensive
little feeling within— that points the way.
Tarot is a tool designed for tapping
our natural intuition, for we must intuit
what the cards mean to us personally. Intuition is naturally catalyzed by the picture
symbols on the cards. And in following our intuition, we live authentically
in our own truth,
which gives us the
best opportunity
to succeed. Only
in our personal
authenticity can
we find our way
to the ultimately
fulfilling life.
Picture-symbols, as in the tarot,
have always been
triggers for intuition,
as well as for new
ideas and powerful
perspectives. As
Aristotle wrote,
“The soul never
thinks without
a picture.” The
power of the tarot
is in the power
of the image
which sparks our
imagination. Picture or metaphoric

innovations that work. I have used
tarot numerous times with businesses as an intuitive strategic planning tool and brainstorming process.
But neither the tarot map, nor our
intuition or imagination get us where we
want to go in life.... We must walk the
talk and take action on the suggested
journey. As it is said, “A vision without
action is a hallucination.” Enlightened
tarot is about acting upon the wisdom of the cards. We must meet the
forces of the universe half way by our
own steps to co-create what we want.
The beauty of tarot is that its images
Look at it as an opportunity for needed
change. Transforming
your home or personal
space is a positive action now, opening new
space in your life for
what you want to do.
Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21): Intimacy,
partnership, and understanding the force
of your motivations are a key for you this
month. Balancing your needs with the
needs of others, and being able to bring
them out in the open, communicating
them in clear non-emotional ways is a
big deal this month. Deep healing can
take place.
Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 20): Since
Mars went into Leo on May 9th, you may
have found yourself traveling more, on an
adventure, or situations generally moving forward. This month focus on your
relationship. With Mercury retrograde
review your personal connection with your
partner. Changes at home cause you to
communicate in new ways.
Capricorn (Dec 21- Jan 19): This has
been a year of tremendous focus for you,
with determination to learn something
new, or to expand your consciousness
or expertise. This month you do best to
complete a project, refine your expression, review your communication. Take
your time reviewing situations before
reacting. After the summer solstice, life
becomes much more fun.
Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 17): This month
highlights your creativity and your communications. Be sure to create time for
yourself, for play and enjoyment. While
you may feel greatly the needs of the
world or community, let June be the month
to follow your heart, enjoy some romance,
play with children.
Pisces (Feb 18-Mar 19): You may experience the need to clear the air, a need
to address a situation at home or in the
community. Change is important to you
now, and review of your communication
strategies will be helpful. Situations with
family are in flux and transforming. After
the summer solstice, be sure to do something you love because it will be deeply
nourishing.

have the power to inspire! They move
us into action through the deep seated
archetypal images before our eyes. I always keep the cards out that appear in my
readings to be reminded of what needs
to be done. In fact, I will never repeat the
same reading over again unless I have
acted on the previous reading. And every
day, it is my ritual to pick my “action card”
for the day. If you do this over a period of
time with a particular focus, I guarantee
that something good will happen. I call
this the “ritual of results.”
