See your teacher for details Recipe for a Rainy Day What do you do on a cold rainy day? I love to put on some quiet instrumental music and curl up on the couch with a blanket and a 500 page mystery and read all afternoon, occasionally looking up to watch the raindrops crawl down the windowpane and ponder melancholy memories. HA - I think I get about 30 seconds of quiet contemplation before my stir-crazy kid starts bouncing off the walls. Here are some more realistic & family focused ideas for wet weather. Go outside! Staying inside all day never seems to work out for our family; someone - kids and/or parents end up in tears. If it’s really pouring, a quick walk around the neighborhood looking for puddles may be enough. If it’s only sprinkling, it’s actually a great time to go further afield. Drizzly days are a great time to head to the forest for a banana slug hunt, and personally I love the smell of wet leaves and soil. Next, home to warm up with dry clothes & hot drinks or soup. Wind down by cuddling on the couch with a blanket and story books together, or use the blanket to make a fort and tell each other tales. As soon the energy starts to get fidgety put on some loud and lively music for a dance party. When we’re ready to concentrate again, get out some arts and crafts or turn on the oven and mix up a treat to bake. Next, home to warm up with dry clothes and hot drinks or soup. Come to the school Saturday 1/23 from 9 a.m.-noon to provide necessary maintenance and upgrades to the facilities. Look for the Yard Day Sign-Up binder with the list of tasks to be done and the tools needed. Contact Teacher Maggie with questions. January Parent Meeting: Benefits of Reading to Children presented by WPENS Teacher Dara Thornton Reading aloud to your child every day can be the single most important thing you can do to prepare your child for school. Learn about the power of reading aloud, how to have fun doing it, & how to find the books you’ll want to read again and again. To meet your parent participation requirements, you are expected to attend two of our three yard days. Dara Thornton has been teaching and entertaining children for more than 30 years. She began her adventure with children in Wisconsin, where she was a professional puppeteer with Wild Wood Puppet Theater and president of the Wisconsin Children’s Theater Association. When she moved to Santa Cruz with her family, she opened a much sought-after home daycare, taught for Santa Cruz City Schools and was a professional storyteller. Dara has been a popular children’s theater instructor at the West End Studio Theater and Mission Hill Middle School. Dara has taught preschool and parent education since 2003, first at SCPENS and now at WPENS. Her two daughters, now 18 and 28, still enjoy hearing her read favorite children’s stories. Her passion for children’s literature is contagious! Program fund—due Tue, 2/16 When: Thursday, January 21 from 6:45-8:45 p.m. Where: SCPENS Toddler Room Snack: Wendy’s Tuesday/Thursday class The content of this meeting is adult-specific (babies in arms are okay.) For safety reasons, alternate arrangements for children should be planned. Limited childcare is available with advance sign up. Your Program Fund is due Tuesday, February 16th. Look for an email from the Treasurer detailing the amount you owe. A number of families offset this amount with monies raised from the January Read-a-thon. So make sure to participate! Benefits of Reading to Children Reading to your child at a young age is beneficial. Watch this video and learn more about how reading to your child goes way beyond “just something you do.” A kind reminder… Please arrive on time when it is your workday and leave your cell phone in your cubby on vibrate. When at school our focus is on the children. If you are going to be late, please call ahead to let your teacher know, emailing morning of is not an option. The classroom phone number is 831-420-0739. Remember, parents scheduled off cannot leave until you arrive & seminars CANNOT begin until everyone is out. Let’s be fantastic role models for our kids—they pick up on our habits (good or bad) earlier then you may think. SCPENS Newsletter: January 2016 Happy birthday to you!
