3upfront
is by far one of the
hardest working band’s I’ve EVER met.
In the next page or so, I’ll do my best
to give them the credit they have earned
and deserve.
3upfront
started out as a couple
buddies jamming out at Jake’s (the
original drummer) parents house in
Kings Beach, CA, on the shores of
beautiful Lake Tahoe. One day, back in
98’ the current guitarist, and singer,(the
2 founding members remaining), Dave
Montanari and Adam Pierce joined
3upfront
forces to form
. After a
few weeks, they had a handful of songs,
reminiscent of some of there favorite
albums, Kerplunk, Damaged, Punk in
Drublic, and Stranger then Fiction, you
know the bands if your into the 90’s era
music, some of the best ever composed.
Playing house parties and at local pizza
3upfront
and brew pubs,
quickly
started to gain popularity on the shores
of Kings Beach and all around the lake.
After two years of rockin’ out, and
breaking stuff, the band was peaking in
popularity around the lake and it was
time to make a move.
In late 2000, the rowdy crew decided to
move coastal; and found half of them in a
house and the other half in an old Audi,
on the side of Highway-1, just outside
of Santa Cruz. After getting fed up
with practicing on the side of the road,
near Scott Creek, using no more than a
Jake’s trusty gas powered generator, and
a few Coleman propane camp lights,
3upfront
moved in to several
houses together, including but not in
this particular order: the Woodrow
house on the West side, Redwood
Heights off Freedom, The Canfeild
house, the Thurber pad, and of course
317 Spruce, there were others, and to
much debauchery for me to remember
correctly.
After placing second, by 3 votes, in 2002
at the Your Music Magazine Battle of
the Bands, to the other local faves, The
Expendables, the original bass player left
the band, to go on to start a recording

studio, and the rest of
stayed true to the dream. In March of
2006, after 4 more bass players, and placing
third, fourth, and fifth, again, in the Your
Music Magazine Battle of the bands,
Santa Cruz local, Josh Fisher, (current and
LAST bass player) joined up to make the
Voltron Transformation possible.
For the next four-and-a-half years,
3upfront would embark on an epic
D.I.Y tour all over California and Nevada,
while working day jobs, and juggling life’s
waves of insanity.
Playing gigs with such bands as The Circle
Jerks, Guttermouth, The Voodoo Glow
Skulls, The Aggrolites, Dr. Know, aD.I.,
FEAR, Agent Orange, Pschyosomantix,
The Lonely Kings, The MOB, Hate for
State, The Devil Himself, and others,
EVERY weekend, usually leaving Thursday
or Friday mid-day or after a full day of
3upfront
work,
would load The
Fish’s(Josh Fisher) old Volvo turbo wagon,
and Mr. Pierces’(Adam Pierce) old RAV4,
with Jake and D$$(Dave Montanari)and
would leave the sunny beaches of Santa
4
Cruz, for the smoke filled, drink stained,
glass broken, pedals ruined world that is
underground Skate-Punk.
Gaining popularity all over the West
Coast, Arizona, New York, Japan,
Germany, scrimping and saving,
3upfront recorded 2 more albums,
“Nothing to Lose,” a more refined
sound,(Kerplunk Vs. Dookie) as well as
“And Jake” (the most fine tuned to date).
In late 2010, after 12 years, Jake, (the
original drummer) left the band, and was
replaced by a friend and local musician,
Jesse ”J-Dub” Wilkinson. After five
months of loading and unloading gear
to numerous practice spaces, they were
ready, fully revitalized and amped to
play. In 2011 at the last ever Your Music
Magazine, Music Olympics(formerly
3upfront
Battle of the bands)
would go to win 1st place, and 5K in
prizes. After the hangover was gone, and
3upfront
bloodstains removed,
took there winnings and recorded there
current album, that has 19 tracks on it,
in 46 hours.
