Can’t make the Book Sale? 
The Friends of the Scotts Valley Library, a chapter of FSCPL, will host
their book sale on Saturday June 20,
from 10 am to 4 pm. If you missed
the Spring Sale in May at the Downtown Library, or can just never get
enough books, then stop by!
Cost of the Summer Reading
Program 
You can help bring Summer Reading
to your libraries! Here’s how your
tax deductible donation to the
Friends can support the Summer
Reading Program.
•A gift of $5,000 will underwrite
the Festival of the Book.
•$1,000 will pay for Circus of Smiles
performances at three branches.
•$500 will pay for Village Rhythms
performance at a library.
•$250 will help pay for free lunches
for children at the Festival of the Book.
•$100 will help defray the cost of
storing the gently used children’s
books the Friends sell at the Festival of the Book.
Please write “Summer Reading
Program” on the memo line of your
check, or next to “Library Program”
on the enclosed envelope. If you’d
rather make a gift online, visit us at
www.fscpl.org/newsletter.
Thank you for considering making this worthy contribution to
your community!
MAY–JUNE 2015
It’s Spring, Which Means Spring Book Sale
Books, and CDs, and DVDs, OH MY! It’s time
to buy, at the Spring Book Sale! Join the Friends
for a fun time perusing the selection of books and
other items that are for sale on Saturday, May 16th.
Everything has been generously donated by other
bookworms over the past six months.
You can find a new book — believe me, there are
many to choose from. There are fiction, non-fiction,
young adult and children’s books. Pick out a coffee
table book as a present for a friend. For those that
like to listen to their fiction, there are books on tape
and CD that are for sale. Or sit back and relax at
Shoppers with their arms full at the 2014
home
later, with the new movie you’ve purchased
Spring Book Sale
at the Spring Book Sale. Want music instead? We’ve
got that too! Our donors were very kind, so the Friends will be unpacking those boxes, and ready to sell
the items to a happy new home to raise money for our libraries.
Most books will be priced between $1 and $3. So help a friend out! Leave no box in need of being
repacked! Join us in the parking lot next to the Downtown Santa Cruz Library, on May 16th 10 am to 4
pm. The Greek Church will be hosting their Food Faire that weekend, so you can score on tasty treats
as well as great books!
The Summer Reading Program is coming to
the Santa Cruz Public Library!
B
eginning June 1st and running until July 26th,
the Read to the Rhythm Summer Reading
Program is coming back to the Santa Cruz
Public Libraries. These programs are a wonderful
alternative to getting sunburned or having to clean
out the sand from everything you own two weeks
after one trip to the beach. But what’s really great
about Summer Reading is that these programs
directly benefit our community.
Statistics show that over the summer, teens
and children lose important academic skills that
make it difficult to catch up once the school year
begins again in the fall. To counteract this, the
Summer Reading Program offers rewards like
Book Bucks that provide incentive for students of
all ages to continue reading. Children most susceptible to losing academic skills are from low-income
backgrounds, which is why your donations to the
Friends are important to ensure this free program
continues for years to come.
The Summer Reading Program offers interactive
performances at the branches for children and
teen participants. The Circus of Smiles, which
includes theatrics and audience participation,
and the Village Rhythms, with informative performances of harmonious music, will be at local
branches throughout the summer among others.
Performances like these keep learning fun!

Reading Program
The grand finale, Festival of the Book, will be on
July 26th in Harvey West Park. The Watsonville
Taiko, a popular and local drumming group that
encourages learning about the culture and tradition of Japanese Taiko drumming, will perform.
Lunch and a book will be provided free by the
Friends for registered participants.
The Summer Reading Programs are funded by
your support to the Friends, making them free
and accessible to the public. If you would like
to see similar programs at your library, please
donate to the Friends today!

ear Friends,
After more than four years as a board
member and close to two and a half years as your
President, the time has come for me to move on to
other endeavors. Serving as your President has been
an honor and a privilege and given me the opportunity to work with many dedicated and committed
board members, volunteers, staff, and community
members. I have learned a great deal, made lasting
friendships and I believe I have made a positive difference in our community and helped support one
of our greatest cultural and intellectual assets, our
libraries. Thank you all!
I would like to give a special thank you to Teresa
Landers and Janis O’Driscoll and all the library staff
for their guidance, support and collaborative efforts
towards making our libraries the very best they can
be. As we move forward, I encourage everyone who
is a part of the Friends team, members, staff and volunteers, to build on our past success with a shared
vision of a bright future for our libraries.
Our board continues to evolve. Many thanks
to Edna Elkins who is leaving our board of directors to pursue other projects and opportunities; we
wish Edna all the very best success and happiness.
Welcome to Rebekah Sousae our newest board
member and congratulations to Aaron Brandt as your
new board President. I am confident the Friends of
the Santa Cruz Public Libraries will continue to be a
vital part of our community, serving as our libraries’
greatest advocate and support organization.
With Sincerest Gratitude,
Pete Cullen

Teresa Landers, Director of Libraries
I
t is with both sadness and excitement that I write
my last column as Library Director for the Santa
Cruz Public Library System. I am retiring and, in
August, my husband and I begin our next adventure
serving in Botswana with the Peace Corps. At the
end of our service, we will live in Phoenix to be closer
to our children and grandchildren. My last day at
work is May 15.
I arrived in Santa Cruz in 2009, during the height
of the recession. The Library’s financial situation was
dire. With great sacrifice by the staff, we weathered
these difficult times, kept all ten branches open, and
expanded hours.
Even more importantly, we made great strides
in technology and exponentially expanded our
programming and partnerships for all ages. We

welcomed in the new age of electronic books and
streaming music and video and upgraded our technology both for the public and behind the scenes.
SCPL is poised for more change as a transition is
made to a new model of governance that is being finalized. Once that is complete, a search for my successor can begin. In the meantime, Janis O’Driscoll,
Manager of Programs and Partnerships will serve as
the Interim Director.
As for the Library- great plans are moving forward
for exciting summer events:
• The Summer Reading Program with the theme,
Reading to the Rhythm gets started in June and culminates with the Festival of the Book on July 26.
Many fun programs are planned for every branch.
• The SoundSwell local music project is having a
fund raiser at Kuumbwa Jazz on June 14 from 7–9 pm
• Garfield Park turns 100 and we are celebrating
with a community birthday party on July 11. Check
out the new drought resistant landscaping at Garfield
Park.
Check the Library’s calendar and website for a
complete list of library activities in the summer and
throughout the year: www.santacruzpl.org
In closing, I am honored to have served a community that is so supportive of its public library and I
am confident that the next library director will be
able to build on the foundation I have established
and take SCPL to new heights.
Our Mission The Friends of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries, Inc., is a non-profit organization whose
members support the Santa Cruz city-county library system through fundraising, volunteer services and advocacy.

“Our family first started enjoying
the Tales to Tails program at the Capitola
Library when my daughter turned 6 years
old. We are so happy now to have it in
our local library in La Selva Beach. It has
helped her to become more eager to read
aloud. It has also helped her with her reading comprehension. Our whole family has
developed a relationship with the dogs
and especially Bitsy. We look forward to
Tales to Tails every month.” –Jennifer
