It is the most important meal of the day for several reasons. Teachers want us to eat breakfast because students who eat breakfast have good behavior, can concentrate better, and have less of a chance of becoming chubby. Breakfast means “break the fast.” Fasting means not eating, and you break it by eating again. Most kids have a ten-twelve hour fast between dinner and breakfast. A good breakfast involves fruit, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy. Doughnuts and other pastries are delicious, but they do not fill you with nutrition, they fill you with sugar. Making a good breakfast is easy. A quick breakfast is cereal (grains) with milk (dairy), yogurt (dairy) with fruit or toast (grains). I prefer a bagel (grains) with cream cheese (dairy) and my mother usually forces me to eat a banana (fruit). A balanced breakfast will give you energy (above) while sugary treats (below) like donuts set you up for energy crashes. Remember that if you don’t eat breakfast you will feel more tired and be hungry until your next snack! Grab a pencil and practice your Nutrition IQ right here on the page... <----------- KIDS CRUZ SCIENCE Natural Disaster Detecting Birds By Hunter Scientists believe they have found a way to detect natural disasters using birds from Tennessee. Have you ever thought of having a way to detect natural disasters? On April 2014, a series of devastating tornadoes swept through the southern United States causing heavy amounts of damage and killing over 35 people. Not only people were affected by these tornadoes, animals and wildlife were just as devastated as humans! However there was one species of bird that managed to escape this natural disaster unscathed. These birds were the goldenwinged warblers. This bird left its breeding ground in Tennessee two days before the tornadoes and flew off to Florida. Scientists were curious and so, put a half-gram tracking device on 20 birds. The data the researchers got was shocking. The birds went to Florida, one even went to Cuba, but all the birds returned to Tennessee within 5 days after the natural disasters were over. This led scientists to believe that the birds had some way of sensing the tornadoes before they came. This led the ornithologist Henry Streby to theorize that the birds avoided the disaster thanks to their superb hearing. He thinks that the birds picked up the infrasound coming from the tornado. This infrasound (low-frequency sounds) can travel REALLY far. Humans are unable to hear sounds below 20 hertz (or cycles of sound per second) but these birds can hear sound as low as 0.5 hertz, low enough for them to hear these infrasounds. Birds have always been known to be good weather predictors, but not on this level. Many biologists never thought of the possibility that the birds’ hearing was their life-savor. Many scientists believe this theory, however, some are still skeptical. Whether or not it is because of the birds’ hearing, they were still able to avoid these natural disasters which is something that will become increasingly important as climate change plays it’s part. Golden-winged warblers above and right may be able to detect tornadoes using their acute hearing The golden-Winged Warbler is a New World Warbler. It breeds in southeastern and south-central Canada and the Appalachian Mountains northeastern to north-central USA. The majority of the global population breeds in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Manitoba. By Kierran Looking for high quality food cooked to perfection? Then you MUST try Oswald Restaurant. As a Christmas present, my parents took me to one of their favorite restaurants in Santa Cruz. It’s located at 121 Soquel Avenue on the corner of Front Street. This place was filled to capacity by 7:30 pm. Reservations are highly recommended, and it was packed the whole time we were there. I thought it was noisy when we first entered, but once we were sitting in the dining room it wasn’t as loud. The lighting was soft and the tables are pretty close together, but you don’t feel crowded. The waiter was very attentive and answered all of our questions. They have two menus. A bar menu which has more casual food choices like lasagna, hamburger or steak and french fries. We all decided to order from the main menu. To top off a perfect meal I had chocolate soufflé that came out fluffy and hot; I poked a hole in the middle and as I watched the steam rise I added cream to the chocolate desert. The chocolate was rich but also very light and creamy. I’ll have to say this was one of the best dinners I have ever had. The prices are a bit on the expensive side appetizers range from $9-12 dollars. Entrees range from $24-29 dollars. In my opinion the quality is worth the price. They are open for lunch Tuesday through Friday and dinner Tuesday through Sunday. This is definitely worth trying on a night out for a special occasion. You can make reservations by calling #831-423-7427 or online via Open Table on their website at: www.oswaldrestaurant.com We started the evening with 2 amazing appetizers, Dungeness crab with avocado and fried calamari. The crab and avocado appetizer is perfectly balanced. The crab is super fresh and when it’s mixed with the creamy texture of avocado, it literally melts in your mouth. I was allowed to order a really fun drink called a mojito. It is made with sweet and sour soda, lime and fresh mint leaves, it was very refreshing. Next came the Entrees. My Mom ordered day boat scallops over creamy polenta and brocollini. She loved it, the scallops were cooked perfectly; they were tender and full of flavor. My Dad had duck breast cooked medium rare. I don’t like duck, but I did try it and really liked this one. Finally, I ordered roasted chicken, and it was the best chicken I have ever tasted. It was cooked perfectly and the breast was really moist and tender. Kierran’s rating: 5 out of 5 stars. KIDS CRUZ CHRONICLE 5 INTERVIEW Kim Luke: Santa Cruz personality entertains us for a living! by Tanya For my article, I interviewed local Santa Cruz personality Kim Luke because she is very interesting. I wanted the interview to be funny and entertaining and, indeed, she was the right person. Kim is a public speaker, an announcer for the Downtown Holiday Parade, the Santa Cruz Warriors, and the Santa Cruz Derby Girls. She used to be a Derby Girl and also writes for the Good Times. My first stage experience was as a dancer. I did all kinds of dance recitals starting from when I was about 7 years old. I was very involved in the theater productions in high school and college and my favorite role was as Rizzo in Grease. I became an announcer and an emcee because I enjoy interacting with a crowd, I’m good at explaining things and making events fun, and I’m not afraid of making a fool of myself. That happens to everyone! 1. Are you from Santa Cruz? If not, why did you choose to move here? What do you like about it? I did not grow up in Santa Cruz, but I have lived here for quite a while. I grew up just two hours away, in the San Joaquin Valley. Did you know that in the summer it gets to be over 100 degrees there? That’s too hot! My family also had a house in Santa Cruz where we could come for weekends and summers to cool off. Because of that I always felt that Santa Cruz was a second home to me. I moved here in 2002. My kids love growing up here. And I love the sound and smell of the ocean. 2. I heard that you were in a band. What instrument did you play? What was the band called? What type of music did you play? I have played guitar since I was about ten years old. I started out playing fancy classical style and ended up playing punk rock and then my own music that I write myself. I was in a lot of bands, but the most popular one was called Moonshine Willy. (I know – what a silly name!) It was a crazy mix of guitars, fiddles, banjos, mandolins, bass and drums. We played old-fashioned country style of music, but really fast and loud (which made it not so old-fashioned after all). The best part was driving together in our van all over the country playing shows and meeting new people. Once I heard a song on the radio and thought to myself, “hey, that sounds familiar,” and it turned out to be my band! That was a good day. 3. You are an announcer for the Warriors, the Santa Cruz Holiday Parade, and for the Derby Girls. What are some of the funniest things that you had to announce? One of the funniest moments I remember from roller derby announcing was the time I had to invite the entire audience (1,100 people) to please come onto the track and walk around in circles and shuffle their feet for fifteen minutes. It seems the floor had been made TOO CLEAN and was too slippery to skate on. The fans were very helpful in getting it just dirty enough for us. During the Warriors nights I play games on the court with fans during time outs. A fun game is called the Jersey Race, where kids need to put on really large basketball uniforms and shoes and try to make a basket. It’s always funny to me when I have to yell “Pull up your pants!” 4. What was your first experience on stage? Why did you choose to be an announcer? I really enjoy being an announcer at events. It’s always exciting to be part of something fun, and I’ve never been afraid to speak in front of a lot of people – thank goodness. 6 KIDS CRUZ CHRONICLE Photo courtesy of Kim Luke 5. I read that you were a Derby Girl. How did you and all the other Derby Girls create your funny nicknames? I was a derby girl for quite awhile, and still love roller skating. My name was Mildred Fierce, which is from a famous 1945 movie called Mildred Pierce. But of course I wanted to be fierce! Some skaters choose names based on their jobs (Barbarian Librarian works at the library, Beans worked at a coffee shop), some girls name themselves after their favorite bands or authors (Kiki Clash loves the Clash, Skirt Vonnegut loves Kurt Vonnegut). Other skaters just wanted to sound tough, fast, scary or just intimidating. It’s fun to come up with a derby name, and I think everyone should have one! 6. You write in the Good Times. What are your favorite topics to write about? I like to write about creative projects, especially how artists are inspired and then how they take the steps to make something happen – whether it’s creating a painting, writing a play and having it produced, or planning a flash mob. Like most writers, I write the best about things that interest me. When I write fiction, I like to write about someone who is a lot like me – maybe she gets to see and do things that I might not have the chance to. MOVIE REVIEW Arrietty,A Japanese film adaptation of Mary Gordon’s novel The Borrowers by Gillian Arriety is a Japanese animated fantasy film directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi and based on the novel The Borrowers, by Mary Gordon. It takes place at a beautiful old house in the country were a young boy has gone to rest before he has heart surgery. Shawn, the young boy, discovers something in the grass the first day he gets there. This thing later on turns out to be a tiny person. The tiny people call themselves the Borrowers. Shawn befriends the youngest of the three Borrowers living under his Aunt’s home. The youngest Borrower’s name is Arriety. Her father is very upset that one of the human beings (the Borrowers refer to them as Beans) has discovered them so he decides they will have to move. Arriety tries to convince her father that the boy is a friend. Meanwhile, the young boy’s caretaker has discovered Arriety’s tiny home and captures her mother in a glass jar. The young boy, Shawn, promises to help Arriety find her mother, but after that what will they do, how will they survive? This movie is a great movie for the whole family. It is a wonderful story and the animation is beautiful. Gillian’s rating: 4.5 of 5 stars Arrietty was released in US theaters in 2012, so look for Arrietty on DVD, Netflix or other rental. KIDS CRUZ CHRONICLE 9 RESEARCH by Nikolai Today, I’m going to serve you up a delicious main course of a few of the most poisonous plants on Earth. Also, I may serve you up a few miscellaneous facts as a side dish. Alright, enough with eating food. Let’s get our priorities straight. Editor’s Note: Neither the author nor Chronicle Staff were harmed during the research for this report. e R e Th f o s s u lt g n i k Loo . . . . . . . . . . p U First up: Dolls Eyes. Dolls Eyes live in eastern North America. White Snake Root also lives up there, but we’ll get to that in minute. To be more specific about the Dolls Eyes, they live in hardwood and mixed forest. The most poisonous part of the plant are the berries. They contain a carDiogenic toxin that immediately sedates cardiac muscle tissue. Eating them can cause death. Second up to the podium: White Snake Root. As stated earlier, White Snake Root lives in eastern North America, but mostly lives in woods and brush thickets. The plant contains the toxin tremetol. When eaten by cattle, the meat and milk become contaminated. If consumed it causes milk sickness. Some of the symptoms of which are: loss of appetite, abdominal pain, violent vomiting, constipation, severe thirst, and tremors. Dolls Eyes on left White Snake Root pictured on right 10 KIDS CRUZ CHRONICLE RESEARCH DO NOT try this at home! . . . . . ntS ! Y a L l D P A E s D u s o ’ n T I o s i o P ..... Wolves Bane, pictured below left English Yew, below Third’s about to make a stand: Wolves Bane. Wolves Bane lives in the mountainous parts of the northern hemisphere. They mostly live in the mountain meadows. This plant contains the toxin aconitine. If eaten, symptoms appear almost immediately. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, numbness in the mouth and face, sweating, dizziness, difficulty breathing, headache, and confusion. Okay, I’m done with the comedy. Let’s get to the facts. The English Yew is a tree that mainly lives in western, southern, and central Europe. It also lives in Iran and southwest Asia. This tree’s toxin is taxine. Every part of the tree except the berries are poisonous. The toxin in the foliage is still poisonous when wilted, and even more deadly when dried. Symptoms include accelerated heart rate, muscle tremors, convulsions, collapse, difficulty breathing, circulation impairment, and heart failure. KIDS CRUZ CHRONICLE 11 BOOK REVIEW The Thickety, A Path Begins by Talia When Kara Westfall was six years old, her mother was convicted of witchcraft. Many years later, Kara and her brother Taff are still shunned by their village because of their mother’s powers. The people of their village fear two things, witchcraft and the mysterious forest that covers most of the island that they live on. The forest has many names, but most commonly known as The Thickety. The villagers fear the forest because of the demon and the dangerous creatures that lurk in The Thickety. When a strange bird lures Kara into The Thickety, she discovers a mysterious book with terrifying powers; a book that might have belonged to her mother. And that is just the beginning. This is a very exciting and gripping story, although it is by JA White very creepy. Because of that, I do not recommend this book for anyone under fifth grade. I am very serious about this. It may give you some nightmares, so keep that in mind before you start the book, because once you start reading it, it is almost impossible to put it down. Also do not read it at night like I unwisely did. It gave me nightmares for a week. If you don’t like scary books, or have nightmares often I highly recommend finding a different book for some light reading. Talia’s rating: 4.5 out of 5 I gave The Thickety this rating only because it is so creepy. Besides that, it is perfectly written. Published by Harper Collins BOOK REVIEW Extra Yarn, A picture book for all ages by Mac Barnett by Talia There is only one word for this story: perfect. It is a beautiful story that simply paints a wonderful picture into your head. It is a very powerful story about how something very ordinary can become extraordinary, and how we can change things if we want to. The story takes place in a very ordinary town covered in snow, when Annabelle found a box of yarn in every color, and that is when everything started changing. This is a beautiful book. It is definitely a book that can be enjoyed and loved by all ages. It also is mostly pictures and has large print, so it is an easy read, and it is great book for practicing reading skills, mostly for kindergarteners. 12 KIDS CRUZ CHRONICLE Talia’s rating 5 out of 5 Published by Harper Collins WHERE DID IT COME FROM? W h e r e d o Te n n i s b a l l s c o m e f r o m? by Nathan Did you ever wonder how a tennis ball is made? Tennis balls used to be made in Europe and the United states but now most production is done in the Far East because it can be done cheaper. Tennis balls have been made the same way for the last 100 years. The first step is when the factory gets giant bales of raw rubber that can weigh 70 to 250 pounds. The rubber is then kneaded to make it softer to work with and to make sure the solution will flow correctly. Tennis balls are not pure rubber, they add a variety of powders to give powers to the ball. Next the rubber compound is put into a tank with a petroleum solvent and left to soak. After a while a sticky dough results. The dough is thinned with more stirring and solvent until the required consistency is produced. Then the rubber is heated and turned into pellets the size of a can of play dough. gether after buffing and gluing. Then they are inflated in one of two ways. One is done with chemicals and the other is compressed- air inflation. Balls are pressurized to about 12 pounds per square inch. Finally, they cover the ball with the fabric and then send it through a steamer to give the ball its fuzz. And the last step is stamping on the logo of whichever brand of tennis ball it will be. Now when you go and play tennis you might look at the ball a little differently. From there the pellets are cooled and put into a hydraulic press which forms them into half shells. The half shells are joined to- KIDS CRUZ CHRONICLE 13 TRAVEL A Good City for a Day of Fun by Oliver Solvang is a city filled with many interesting and fun things to do. It is a unique city that offers you the chance to feel like you are visiting Denmark without leaving California. Solvang is located in the Santa Ynez Valley, half way between Santa Cruz and Southern California, so it is a good meeting place if you have friends or family in the Los Angeles area. Our family traveled there over winter vacation and discovered many new activities that made for the perfect get away. We stayed in a house near Solvang. The house we rented was perfect for two families, and even dog friendly so we could bring our pet. The house had a goat pen where you could feed and pet the goats. The house was located near horse farms and an alpaca ranch. There are some advantages to renting a house on vacation instead of staying at a hotel. One advantage is that there is more space and you can run around. Also, the house we rented had an unobstructed view of the countryside, unlike a hotel in a city. The house was a twenty-minute drive from Solvang, where we spent a day filled with fun. Solvang is Danish for “Sunny Fields” It was incorporated as a city in 1985, but was founded in 1911 by a group of Danes who traveled west to set up a Danish colony. The buildings are built to look like they are in Denmark, including windmills and half-timbered houses. As you stroll the downtown, there are many bakeries, restaurants, and shops selling Danish goods. Before the Danish settlers came, the area was home to the Chumash people. Then the Spanish missionaries came and built the Mission Santa Ines, which still stands in the middle of Solvang. On our visit, we went to two great parks. One park was Sunny Fields Park. In this park there is a giant climbing structure with a Danish castle theme to it. There is a large baseball field that has a long pathway around it that is good for long walks and riding bikes or scooters. The other park was the Hans Christian Andersen Park, which has a skate park, hiking and horseback trails, picnic areas, climbing structures, and public tennis courts. The skate Sunny Fields Park, above park is built mainly for skateboards but scooters will Hans Christian Andersen Park, right work too, just not as well because the lip of each ramp Photos by Oliver’s family will scratch the bottom of your scooter. I enjoyed riding my scooter even though it scratched the scooter. If you walk a ways into the park there are multiple playgrounds. This park is also a great location to use an app called Geo-Cache. We used this app to show a map to find a cache of treasures where you add your name to the register and a treasure if you have one. Within the city, there is a trolley called The Solvang Trolley. This is a trolley like you’d see in San Francisco, but two horses pull it! There is also a good restaurant called Chomp. This restaurant makes good American diner food, and they make a wicked milkshake! I must say, their service is quick, and the place is family friendly. They give you the option to sit outside, or inside. If you sit outside you get to see the replica of the famous Copenhagen statue of the Little Mermaid. I also recommend The Book Loft, which was a great place to shop, have a cup of hot chocolate (or coffee for grown-ups), and is located downstairs from the Hans Christian Andersen Museum. All in all, I think Solvang is a good city for meeting family and friends for a day of fun. I hope that you enjoy our visit if you travel there. 14 KIDS CRUZ CHRONICLE WORDSEARCH by Gus Winter + Spring = Good times Mist Dew Grass frost showers slush chirp valentine taxes influenza cold frostbite cough numb rhinovirus pollen sun bunny rabbits fuzzy ducks COMICS KIDS CRUZ CHRONICLE 15 QUOTES by Gus Some of these quotes are from real people, some from characters in books, all are offered to make you smile. “When you are waiting for the bus and someone asks, “Has the bus come yet?
