JULY 2015
BURLINGTON…DISCOVER THE TREASURES
Greater Chocolate City
Join us on September 15 for the
Golf Outing
Does your game need a little help?
No matter how good a golfer a
person is, we all can use a good tip
now and then. Some of us more
"now" than "then"! Whether you're a
beginner or a veteran golfer, this
golf tip can help.
Ladies and Gentlemen, don’t miss
this fun filled day at Hawk’s View
Golf Club! Enjoy a day on the links
with friends and colleagues. It’s a
scramble – best ball is played. This
event is open to the public.
Fee includes lunch and dinner, golf,
cart, range, closest to the pin prizes
among others and a chance to win
that Hole-in-One $10,000 prize!
Remember 2 years ago – Rick
Tinder won that prize! This highlight
Hole-In-One competition is
sponsored by Boardwalk
Apartments/Styza Properties.
The forecast is fun so don’t miss out
– register today! Early birds get the
discount!
Our lunch at 11:00 am is
sponsored by Stowell’s Catering,
with the Shotgun Start promptly at
noon.
Non-golfers stop by at 5:30 for the

from that spot. The best of the
second shot is determined, then
all play their third shot from that
spot and so on until the ball is
holed. Don’t miss the fun

Kevin Schuerman selected
as Honorary Chairman
The honorary director program was instituted in
1989. Through this program, the Chamber names a
business or community leader to the informal post,
hoping to encourage a greater understanding of the
Chamber, its members, and its activities in the
community. At the same time, the Honorary Director
has the opportunity to share his/her impressions of
the Chamber's programs as our board learns more
about that business.
Kevin Schuerman, CPA, was selected to be the Honorary Director by the board
of the Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce. He will join the board, attending
the monthly meetings and sharing his insights and thoughts for the months of
May, June and July.
Kevin was hired by Wayne Christman, CPA in 1990, obtained a CPA license in
1994 and purchased part of Christman’s practice in July, 1994. He then moved
to his current location at 372 N. Pine St. in August 1999. He specializes in tax
preparation and planning, accounting, payroll and computer services. He
believes that his small accounting practice leads to personal, friendly service
with over 20 years of experience.
Kevin is a Burlington High School graduate and attended UW Parkside where
he received a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. Kevin and his wife,
Jean, have 3 children, Karly 25, Jared 21 and Kolin 17. They are also co-owners
of BJ Wentkers Historic Fine Dining Restaurant located at 230 Milwaukee Ave.,
Burlington.
The restaurant offers a unique historic atmosphere and contemporary cuisine
offered by Chef Jeff Willis.
Caid Menzel
Heather Rainer is a Burlington
resident, currently enrolled in the
horticulture program at Gateway
Technical College.
Justine Schwarz is a graduating
senior from Wilmot Union High
Heather Rainer
School. She plans to attend the University
of Minnesota Twin Cities with a goal to study in the
area of Biology, Society, and Environment.
The Burlington Area Garden Club raises scholarship
money through its annual plant sale, which is held in
May and with the biannual Garden Walk, which will be held on
Sunday, July 22, 2015. The club also has a garden grants program
to help fund local gardening projects.

Miniature Gardening
Growing Small is Big Fun!
A fun, new trend in gardening
combines the joy of gardening with
the enchantment of miniatures.
Miniature gardening is quickly
becoming a favorite pastime
enjoyed by all ages. Whether
fairies, gnomes, trains or simply
the fun of playing with smallscale design catch your fancy,
only your imagination is the
limit to creating a personalized, tiny world of
wonder. From tabletop gardens to elaborate
in-ground villages, there’s a way to garden in
miniature no matter where you live.
Tabletop Gardens
No yard? No problem. Miniature gardens are easy to
create in a container for the deck or indoors. It’s also
a good place to start if this is your first venture into
the land of littles. First determine where your
miniature garden will go. Inside gardens need to be
in a container preferably with drainage. Low, round,
plastic garden bowls work well and many come
with a saucer. If your garden will be outside, place it
where it can be protected from heavy downpours.
Outdoor container gardens can also be created in old
wheelbarrows, wagons, and birdbaths, but again,
drainage is vital.

Inground Gardens
Use some thought when determining where to site
an inground miniature garden. Under a tree, in the
corner of an existing bed, or a hidden spot near a
path are good options. Established plants nearby can
help create a sense of miniature by dwarfing tiny
houses and paths. Inground gardens also have the
added benefit of the plants finding their own water
and nutrients.
Miniature Plants
When choosing plants for your garden, ask yourself
how much sun or shade will it receive? Tiny ferns
are good for indoor gardens. For a sunny spot outdoors, your options are endless. Succulents,
alyssum, Dianthus (pinks), Irish moss,
and creeping thyme are lowgrowing plants. Add height
with a miniature conifer. Just
like full-sized landscapes, they
make interesting trees and
shrubs and bring a sense of
permanence and structure to the
miniature garden.
If gardening inground, it’s fun to hunt for dwarf
versions of plants. Look for miniature hostas, dwarf
lady’s mantle, astilbe, and aruncus for shady spots.
Things to Keep in Mind
• Scale: Miniatures can be found many places and
part of the fun is shopping for them, but not all are
the same scale. Be sure the fairy isn’t twice as big
Follow us on pinterest
& like us on facebook
as the house it’s supposed to live in. Railroad
gardens especially require miniature villages to
be in scale with the trains that run through them.
• Cover up: For container gardens, be sure the
potting soil is completely covered. Use pebbles,
plants, sand, and preserved moss to give it a
finished look.
Personalize it
Now the fun begins. As you
create your garden,
personalize it with items that
reflect what you enjoy. Do you
like to go to the beach? Sand,
blue stones, and an Adirondack chair create a summer scene. Do you garden?
Look for a mini greenhouse or potting shed, tiny
tools, and wheelbarrow. A bicycle, slide, and tire
swing can bring back childhood memories. Design
your ideal relaxation spot with a path, bench, pond,
and mini glass of wine.
The most important thing to remember is to have
fun. Create a fairy garden or fairy-less garden with
your kids or grandkids. Find ideas on pinterest or in
books. Take a class with a friend. Let your
imagination go and create a unique miniature world.

Wisconsin Artist Named
National Heritage Fellow
The National Endowment for the Arts announced the 2015 NEA
National Heritage Fellows. Sidonka Wadina of Lyons is one of nine
named fellows. Ms. Wadina is being honored for her Slovak straw
plaiting artistry.
IS YOUR FINANCIAL
PICTURE CLEAR?
Each year the National Endowment for the Arts celebrates master folk
Sidonka Wadina
and traditional artists that embody the evolving artistic landscape of the
nation and its diversity of culture. The NEA National Heritage Fellowships recognize the
recipients' artistic excellence and support their continuing contributions to our nation's
traditional arts heritage. This is the highest honor that our nation bestows on traditional
artists.
We can help you bring clarity to your financial
picture by focusing on what’s important to
you. Together, we’ll create a financial strategy
that reflects your goals—and your values—to
help you live the life you want.
Ms. Wadina is a master straw artist and egg decorator, deeply influenced by her Slovakian
roots. Raised in the Slovak community of Milwaukee, she first learned to decorate eggs
and weave straw designs from her grandmother for the annual Holiday Folk Fair, for
which she has demonstrated her art for 58 years.
Ms. Wadina has served as a master artist in the Wisconsin Arts Board’s competitive Folk
Arts Apprenticeship Program five times in the past seven years, teaching nine apprentices
the intricacies of her craft. The Wisconsin Arts Board is able to offer its Folk Arts
Apprenticeship Program thanks to partnership funding from the National Endowment for
the Arts.
The Wisconsin Arts Board first nominated Ms. Wadina for the National Heritage
Fellowship in 2003. A Milwaukee folklorist, Robert Teske, who worked closely with Ms.
Wadina while at the Milwaukee County Historical Society, renewed the nomination in
2009. Last year, in 2014, the Arts Board renewed the nomination once again, finally
meeting with success for this deserving artist. Said Ms. Wadina in response to the
continued efforts to gain this recognition for her outstanding work, “Thank you for all
the time, work and effort you have put into this nomination for me. I am so grateful.”
Let’s get started today so you can look to
the future with confidence.

Here I will help you learn what you can do on taking care of those insects
or rodents that may be bothering you.
This Month’s Insect: Box Elder.
Where they live: They live on Box Elder trees and sometimes Silver Maple trees.
What they like: They feed on Box Elder Trees. If you see them on the ground, they
are feeding on the seeds that have fallen from the tree or dropped apples.
What part of the building do they like: They like the south side of the
buildings and rocks so they can warm themselves in the sun.
How to control them from entering your Home or Business: Treat with a chemical that is
labeled for box elder bugs. If you’re having a problem in your home, you must find out where
they getting in and sealing up the cracks or openings where they are entering. This must be
done before they start to migrate in the walls. If they are in the walls, a dust must be used to kill
them. Chemicals that you use to kill them on the outside should be micro-encapsulated. This
formulation doesn’t break down from the sun or wash away. When using a store bought
insecticide, be sure to read the label and apply correctly. Any deviation of using the product
could put your family or pets in danger.
Time to start treating for them is NOW being pro-active then re-active will save you a
lot of problems in the coming months
In the upcoming months, I will be highlighting a bug of the month in Ask the Bug Expert
section. If you need help with an insect or rodent problem, call 262-633-2687, email

The following photos show some of the activities in Burlington in the summer of
1950. The photos originally appeared in the Free Press, one of Burlington's two weekly
newspapers of the time. The photo negatives were donated to the Burlington Historical
Society by the late Elmer Ebert, who owned the Free Press from 1949 until it was bought
by the Standard Democrat in 1955.
Summer recreation director Eugene VanderBeke gives the older boys some
batting tips at the start of the morning program at Athletic Park in July 1950.
Among the observers are Wayne Schlitz, Bill Johnson, Jack Spiegelhoff, Jim Vos,
Wenzel Smetana, Jerry Schilz, Smitty Kerkhoff, Ernie Shaw, Jim Vande Sand,
Jerry Bauman, Dave Umnus, Duke Schneider, and Don Boulden.
The Richter & Frey Kraut Co. planted row after row of cabbage on the John R.
Wilson farm west of Burlington in June 1950 – setting out about 9,000 plants to
the acre. Positioning plants on the firm’s newly acquired automatic planter are,
from left, Clarence Richter, John Cramer, Paul Frey, and George Frey. Theodore
Richter is driving the tractor. Richter & Frey's sauerkraut plant was on Highway
83 south of Burlington. The building still stands near Highway 83's intersection
with the Burlington bypass.
Participants in the City's afternoon recreation program for children age 11 years
or younger gather on the merry-go-round at Echo Park in August 1950. The
program got off to a late start that summer because of an earlier polio outbreak.
Among the children seen in the photo are Kristine Ebert, Carol and Robert Scott,
Lynn Rubach, Gerald Alby, and Ronald Sennott.
The Mills Brothers Circus set up its tents and booths at Wereley Field on
July 7, 1950, under the auspices of the Burlington Lions Club. Wereley Field, a
private airport serving Burlington from 1946 to 1960, was located on the Phil and
Rose Warren farm on the west side of Highway 43 (now Hwy. 142). People in the
crowd include Dick Killen, Mary Jane Thate, Bob Lederer, Warren Ranker, and
Fred Ketterhagen.

Happy Trails
by Tom Lebak
There is nothing quite like the simple pleasure of
riding a bicycle. It is a timeless activity that is
enjoyed by people from ages 5 to 85 and I am sure
that there are more than a few ninety-year olds out
there still turning the cranks. Whatever the level of
commitment one makes to the sport in terms of
things such as financial investment, time on the bike
and type of riding, the one constant is that riding is fun. And that fun has been given a big
boost recently through the efforts of several organizations dedicated to promoting and
expanding cycling, and particularly trail riding, in the Burlington area.
Cyclists from this area, from around the State and from northern Illinois have for years
viewed the Burlington area as a prime destination point for picturesque scenery, low
traffic roads and varying degrees of challenging routes. Until just a few years ago, the
community had two popular long distance rides, the Heat Stroke 100 and the Chocolate
City Ride. The latter still is staged every May and the former recently ended after a
wonderful twenty-five year run. What was remarkable in particular about those rides was
the large number of Northern Illinois riders that returned year after year because of the
quality and beauty of the routes. That certainly speaks to the draw that our area is.
Presently, there is an evolving emphasis on a different dimension in cycling. A few years
ago, the Burlington Chamber of Commerce collaborated with the television show
“Discover Wisconsin” to feature cycling in the Burlington area. Much of the focus of the
Burlington segment was on trail riding featuring cyclists on the Seven Waters and White
River Trails. Now, through the efforts of the City of Burlington, Bike Burlington and other
State-wide organizations, these trails soon will be linked with the hub of this network
located at Wehmhoff Jucker Park along the Fox River in the heart of Burlington. Recently,
there was a ceremony marking the opening of the improved facilities at that park where
attendees learned about the City’s plans to bring the White River Trail, which currently
ends at Spring Valley Road, into the City and connect it with the Seven Waters Trail in the
area of Wehmhoff Jucker Park.
This really is good news for cyclists who use the trails (and their numbers continue to
increase.) Many view trails as safer and quieter than road riding and, due in large part to
their former life as a railroad line, less hilly. It is a great venue for family rides and for
connecting with nature in a unique way. The effort to interconnect trails will continue to
increase opportunities for riders. As a matter of fact, I recently rode with a group of
cyclists who are affiliated with National and State rails-to-trails initiatives and one of the
members mentioned the hope of interconnecting as many trails in Wisconsin as possible.
And if the health and fun aspect of cycling was not enough to get communities energized
about promoting and facilitating cycling, a recent Bicycling magazine online article (June
17, 2015) talked about how building bike-friendly communities spurs economic growth.
The article quoted a recent University of California study that saw higher productivity
levels in communities where the populace was physically active. People living in areas
that promote and facilitate cycling, walking, running and generally leaving the car in the
garage whenever possible also have higher levels of mental health and wellbeing, traits
desirable in employees.

It is interesting to note in the U of C study that 44% of the 1,800 people surveyed who did
not own a bike said that they would ride at least once a week if they did not have to worry
about traffic. What a promotion for trail riding! Finally, the authors hoped that the report
would open the eyes of government to the advantages of designing (or redesigning) cities
to encourage and accommodate active lifestyles.
Fortunately, we in Burlington not only have government leaders with their eyes open but
who also are proactive in improving the cycling and exercise infrastructure. We also have
groups such as Bike Burlington which is dedicated to making cycling accessible to all in
the area. Visit their web page at bikeburlingtonwisconsin.org and consider joining. We live
in a cycling paradise and we are lucky to have individuals and groups who want to make
things even better.
So it is time to pump up those tires, put on
your helmet and hit the road or trail. I promise
you that fun awaits!
