The Design Learned team worked with Dallas-based firm, Hinojosa, Architecture &
Interiors on this innovative $8.5 million renovation project for the SPCA of Texas.

Design Learned was an integral part of the
design team which transformed a former
industrial complex into a unique 39,000
square foot shelter — more than doubling
the space of the previous SPCA facility.
DLI designed all of the mechanical and
plumbing features for the new shelter, with
its healthy environment and a fun retail-style
atmosphere — calculated to attract attention
and increase the adoption rate for a humane
organization which has previously found homes
for nearly 4,000 displaced animals each year.

Oldwick Animal Hospital
Oldwick, New Jersey
Design Learned Inc. collaborated with local
architects and geothermal engineers from
project conception through construction to
design for LEED Certification this state-ofthe-art veterinary facility.
The interior has three levels of lighting so that
the staff and patients can adjust the wattage to
the task at hand.
This facility has been built for superior energy
efficiency by utilizing a vast amount of natural
light and geothermal technology.

Our mechanical design
includes many zones which
have dedicated heat pumps
so that the geothermal system
can deliver heating and
cooling only where necessary.
A separate system cleans,
filters, and adds fresh air to
ensure the building keeps the
staff and patients healthy.
The exterior of the hospital
had to conform to strict
local ordinances, so the DLI
team employed soft lighting
to maintain the residential
feel necessary for the area.

Austin Animal Services Center
Austin, Texas
This beautiful 41,000 square foot campus,
opened in November 2011 as the new
municipal no-kill animal shelter for the city
of Austin, Texas.
The distinctive $13M building project has
achieved LEED Silver certification.
DLI engineered systems include water-sourced
heat pumps with advanced zoning and airborne
biopathogen controls. The innovative building
was designed with both solar water heating and
photovoltaic electricity production.

Virginia Beach Animal Care
& Adoption Center
Virginia Beach, Virginia
This modern animal care facility was
designed with plumbing and cleaning
systems to mitigate diseases. The floor plan
and areas for animal caging also help to
control diseases, odors, humidity, lighting,
noise and increase operational effectiveness.
The HVAC system incorporates a sustainable
design that effectively processes the increased
fresh air requirements. Hot water is provided
by a solar water system capable of meeting
the entire demand of the facility. Water use is
reduced through a rainwater harvesting system
for rinsing and flushing.

LA Dogworks — “Los Angeles’ first exclusive
dog Mecca” — recruited Design Learned and
other leading industry professionals to
create a pleasant and contemporary kennel
equipped with ultra-modern technology to
ensure the highest level of health and safety
for dogs of all shapes and sizes.
Advanced technology features include a high
tech drainage and flushing system throughout
the facility that moves “dirty” water out of the
building in a timely manor. The HVAC system
rivals most hospitals, assisting in the prevention
of bacteria, mold and control pathogens.

Paws and Claws Humane Society
Rochester, Minnesota
This state-of-the-art shelter, completed in
July 2013, is located on nearly two acres
and provides a spacious 7,800 square foot
interior with all the amenities in which to
house the dogs and cats including a vet room
with all necessary animal care equipment
and a separate area for grooming and baths.
The shelter rooms and housing are designed to
keep noise and stress to a minimum. Separate
air exchange and HVAC systems are in place
to keep disease spread to a minimum. High
pressure power washers equipped with disease
preventing disinfectants keep the space clean.

Gloucester-Mathews
Humane Society
Gloucester, Virginia
Design Learned worked with both animal
care architects and local architects to create
this beautiful, state-of-the-art shelter for the
community of Gloucester, Virginia.
Completed in 2009, this 3.2 million dollar,
14,293 square foot facility has both comfort
and luxury. The building contains individually
conditioned dog suites as well as cat condos that
are continuously exhausted from the litter areas.

About the Company Founder
C. Scott Learned, MS, MBA, PE, LEED AP is
president of Design Learned, Inc., supervising the
engineering of mechanical, electrical, plumbing,
fire protection, and air and noise control aspects
of animal care facilities. In addition, he provides
consultation, floor planning recommendations,
and the specification of animal caging, animal
equipment, and finishes. Scott possesses a vast
knowledge of animal facility requirements —
inspired and informed by his extensive experience
caring for pets and rescued animals.
Scott Learned is Board Certified, both
as a Licensed Professional Mechanical Engineer
(PE) and a Licensed Professional Electrical
Engineer (PE) and is a Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design Accredited Professional
(LEED AP). He is registered with the NCEES
and holds Professional Engineering registrations
throughout most of the United States. Scott
is also Principal Member, NFPA Standards
Committee 150.
