This global contest was introduced in 1982, in Japan, and has grown steadily over 23 years. In 2006, this international student contest stopped to be held in Paris. Since then, the Arts of Fashion Foundation, a public American nonprofit 501(C)(3), brought this international competition to the United States and has continued to make it a unique and authentic annual fashion rendez-vous for students, schools and fashion professionals from all over the world to celebrate creativity in fashion. The Arts of Fashion Foundation has evolved into an internationally-recognized organization that is completely independent and neutral to the limitations of commercial interest. They have dedicated themselves to encouraging and supporting creative designers by introducing industry professionals and public audiences to their unique work. Through its different programs, the Foundation is committed to advance the work of visionaries and risk-taking creative fashion designers. This Premier International Student Fashion Competition takes place each Fall during the annual Arts of Fashion Symposium, hosted every year by a different university or school or department. 2015 THEME : TRANSLATION 2015 is the 14th anniversary of the Arts of Fashion Foundation and the 9th consecutive year that this international competition will be organized and held in the United States. CONCEPT & SELECTION PROCESS • Every year a different theme is chosen, and from October of the previous year to April, fashion students register online to participate. They then have to send sketches and technical sheets of a ‘mini collection’ made up of 3 silhouettes or 3 accessories designed around the theme. In 2015, 312 fashion students registered from 121 schools, universities and colleges of 34 countries. • At the end of May a jury panel, composed of national and international fashion professors, selects 50 project illustrations that best represent the set theme and reflect creative and innovative potential. The 50 selected candidates are required to make 2 out of the 3 silhouettes they submitted. • • These 50 projects (100 designs) are judged by a panel of professional fashion designers and are shown on the runway for the grand finale of the Symposium. 7 to 8 designers are awarded and receive scholarship and internship opportunities in creative programs and fashion houses. The spirit of this competition is not to try to find the next Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen or even rank the designers from best to worst, but to recognize and award the most creative projects in order for these students to continue their education and training in order to become better designers, by offering them the opportunity to work, study and learn from renowned mentor designers. The Symposium MasterClass-Series launched in 2005 with only one class, and the program has expanded to between 4 and 5 classes per year with a minimum of 60 students to ensure a positive dynamic work environment and a substantial network. Each year, we partner with the fashion program of a different university to host the MasterClass–Series. The classes are taught in english over a period of 5 full days by a team of 2 renowned designers per class of 15 students who come from around the world. Due to the success of the Symposium MasterClass, the Arts of Fashion Foundation launched the Summer and winter MasterClass Programs where students travel abroad to spend 4 weeks studying under these cutting-edge designers at Les Arts Decoratifs Museum at the Louvre in Paris. Collaborations with prestigious Parisian Haute Couture Craftmanship houses including Maison Lesage and Atelier Lognon have been developped. Through the DEBUT-SERIES, this relationship can continue to grow and bear fruit as those students become mature young professionals. CALIFORNIA COLLEGE OF THE ARTS The Foundation introduced DEBUT–SERIES in 2007 to promote emerging fashion design graduates by giving them the chance to bring their first collections to show on the runway for members of the press, industry professonals, and lovers of fashion. The DEBUT-SERIES is open to applicants who are within 5 years of having graduated from an institution of higher education. Applicants submit drawings of their collection plan (6/8 looks) and at least one sample garment. The Arts of Fashion review committee will select the designers to participate in the DEBUTSERIES presentation, and the committee will act as advisors during the production process. One of these designers will receive an monetary reward of $5,000 to continue to develop their line and encourage entrepreneurship. 2009 AMY SARABI CHELSEA SNYDER ACADEMY OF ART UNIVERSITY JULIANNE THIBODEAUX LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY 2008 NATALLIA PILIPENKA FASHION INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY STEPHANIE OTTO UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI AKARASUN SEANGLAI UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI 2007 MEGAN STEIN DREXEL UNIVERSITY DAVID GIL MIAMI INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF ART AND DESIGN DOUGLAS REKER SAVANNAH COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN CARLOS SANTIAGO IMAGE: - 2009 Arts of Fashion Debut- Series - Designer Amy Sarabi SAVANNAH COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN ARTSOFFASHIONFOUNDATION ARTS OF FASHION FOUNDATION 555 CALIFORNIA STREET, SUITE 4925 SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA 94104 USA | [email protected] WWW.ARTS-OF-FASHION.ORG | EIN 37-1429243 | IRS SECTION 501(C)(3) THE FIRST AM ERIC AN ORGAN IZ ATION TO B RING TOGE THER E M ERGING FA S HION TALENTS FROM AROU N D THE WORLD TO S HARE AN D CE LE B R ATE CRE ATIVIT Y IN FA S HION ARTSOFFASHIONFOUNDATION ARTS OF FASHION PROFESSIONAL SERIES T R A N S L AT I O N - 2 0 1 5 IMAGE: Courtesy of Fashion Designer Zoe Vermeire - Arts of Fashion CarteBlanche 2012 - San Francisco CARTEBLANCHE-SERIES ARTSOFFASHIONFOUNDATION C A R T E B L A N C H E - S E R I E S ARTS OF FASHION FOUNDATION 555 CALIFORNIA STREET, SUITE 4925 SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA 94104 USA | [email protected] WWW.ARTS-OF-FASHION.ORG | EIN 37-1429243 | IRS SECTION 501(C)(3) CONTENTS 01 02 CONTENTS ABOUT THE CARTEBLANCHE-SERIES C A RTE B L A N C H E - S E R I E S I S M E A NT TO S H OWC A S E A N D PRO M OTE TH E WO R K S O F PR E V I O U S LY AWA R D E D A N D E M E RG I N G TA LE NT S LI N K E D TO TH E WO R LD O F TH E A RT S O F FA S H I O N A LLOW I N G TH E M TH E O P P O RT U N IT Y TO E X H I B IT TH E I R AVA NTG A R D E A N D C R E ATI V E FA S H I O N CO LLEC TI O N S THE ARTS OF FASHION FOUNDATION IS A 501(C) (3), PUBLIC, NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION, LINKING BOTH ACADEMICS AND PROFESSIONALS ALIKE AND IS DEDICATED IN FOSTERING INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL EXCHANGE THROUGH THE CREATION OF A VARIETY OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS MEANT TO FACILITATE CRITICAL THINKING AND ADVANCE THE FIELD OF FASHION AMONG ARTISTS, DESIGNERS, SCHOLARS AND STUDENTS.
