from the Pastor …
The Canonization of John XXIII and John Paul II
The week after Easter was an eventful one. On Tuesday,
April 22, I flew to Italy along with my confrère, Bro. Robert
Artman, to take part in the Papal Mass the following
Sunday. We were in the same plane that Cardinal Seán
O’Malley was on with his secretary Fr. Jonathan Gaspar
and Fr. Kevin O’Leary, Rector of Holy Cross Cathedral.
Once in Rome we were welcomed at the airport by Fr.
Antonio Riccio, the superior of our house of formation.
Upon our arrival at Convento San Francesco, more brothers
welcomed us, and a delicious meal was served before we
could take some rest after such a long trip. I spent the next
two days with my family enjoying my elderly mother’s
company and marveling at how fast two great-grand nieces
whom I baptized last November are growing. On Friday,
April 25, all the friars of Convento San Francesco, residents
and guests alike, joined my family and me on a bright and
warm afternoon following a visit that they made to the
nearby abbey of Montecassino. This ancient monastery was
established by St. Benedict 15 centuries ago! On Sunday,
April 27, “Divine Mercy Sunday,” we went to St. Peter’s
Square as early as 7a.m. The Friary is only a five-minute
walk from St. Peter’s, but the streets were so crowded that
it took over a half hour before we could reach the section
reserved for the clergy. Music, prayers, and devotion to the
Divine Mercy went on for hours while countless bishops
were flocking to the platform where the Papal altar was set.
At 10:30 cardinal concelebrants were processing to the altar,
and the Pope Emeritus Benedict was welcomed by a big
applause by the people. Finally Pope Francis reached the
altar to begin the Divine Liturgy. What a moving
experience when you find yourself just feet away from
the Pope. I had the privilege of distributing communion
with hundreds of priests on this historic event. It has been
called “the day of the four popes” since two of them were
being canonized while two others were celebrating this
blessed rite.
At the end of the Mass, we encountered a good number
of Franciscan brothers, among them Bishops from
missionary lands, our Father General, Fr. Michael Perry,
who is an American, and our former general, Fr. José
Carballo, who is presently an archbishop who runs an
important office in the Vatican.
The following day was also a delightful one. Cardinal
Seán along with his secretary and the rector of the
Cathedral joined us friars for a fraternal meal. We were all
excited to have our Cardinal, a Franciscan friar himself, in
our midst, and we couldn’t thank him enough for taking
time from his busy schedule. As you know Cardinal Seán is
a member of the committee of eight Cardinals who advise
Pope Francis about the reform of the Roman Curia and also
chairs another committee that advises the Holy Father
about child protection policies.
Brother Bob Artman, Fr. Christopher Gaffrey, and I
spent our last day in Italy visiting Assisi. We celebrated
the Eucharist at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels, and
then went to pray at the tombs of St. Francis and St. Clare.
I offered the Eucharist for the intentions and needs of all
our parishioners and benefactors. At the end of the day,
we visited the Institute of Challenged Children across the
square from the Basilica of St. Francis. It was founded by
Blessed Ludovico of Casoria in 1871 and is now run by the
Grey Sisters of St. Elizabeth. It is amazing to see the love
with which those nuns care for those children. Blessed
Ludovico was a franciscan friar in Naples who in his life
was reprimanded by his superior for his “unrestrained
charity.” He will be canonized before the end of the year.
I would be remiss if I did not thank Brother Artman
who convinced me to join him on this special pilgrimage.
May St. John XXIII and St. John Paul II, along with St.
Francis, St. Clare, and Blessed Ludovico bless the Church,
the Franciscan Order and all of our dear Parishioners
and Benefactors. !
" First Communion
On Saturday, May 3rd and Sunday, May 4th, 41 students
celebrated their First Communion along with their
parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings and teachers
receiving the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist for the first
time at St. Leonard’s Church in the North End.
In his homily, Rev. Claude Scrima, OFM, spoke
about the importance of receiving God and being faithful
to the Gospel and how Jesus is a true friend and would
never lead you astray, while also stressing the importance
of the Sacrament of Communion. Rev. Antonio
Nardoianni, OFM, administered First Communion to
the following First Communion Candidates:
Shep Alstrom, Alex Baird, Alistair Braun,
Francesca Brocca, De’Ari Burton, Talia Cerqueira,
Luciano Cincotti, Francesco Cirulli, John D’Amico,
Gia DiNunzio, Cameron Esposito, Jacob Foley,
Stephen Fabiano, Ariana Galvao, Ryan Gohlmann,
Quintin Goncalves, Maura Hatala, Veronika Houton,
Siobhan Kane, Abygail King, Jackson LeBlanc,
Valentina LoContro, Jack Marenghi,
Caitlin McDonough, Michael McLaughlin,
Megan Mendoza, Amelie Morreale, Liana PantaleoRivas, Christina Papadopoulos, Emily Parker,
Adriana Passacantilli, Jillian Perry, Christian Peterson,
Julia Pistorino, Liliana Previte, Ezio Salimbeni,
Anna Schulz, Stone Thomas, Juliana Toscano,
Juliana Vitello & Antonio Wiafe.
“I am very proud of all the First
Communion recipients. The girls
looked stunning in their white
dresses and veils and the boys
looked great in their new suits,
it was wonderful to see them
all dressed up,” stated St.
John School Principal, Karen
McLaughlin. “The children
worked very hard throughout the year learning the
importance of what it means to receive Christ in
their lives.” !
