Annual Report 2013-2014 Platinum Sponsor Message from the President Presented by Neil Shewchuk 2013-14 WAB President Dear Members, It is my privilege to present the Annual Report of the Western Association of Broadcasters. Please take a few minutes to review this Report and join me in reflecting on another great year for the WAB. This past year has been a busy year for the WAB board. I took over from Deborah Gauger early in the planning process, and worked diligently to provide relevant, timely and interesting content for this year’s conference. Thank you for joining us for our big 80th Anniversary. This is an exciting milestone and really shows the dedication, commitment and hard work of the Prairie broadcasters - some of them in broadcast families that stretch back to the beginning of the WAB! WAB is stronger than ever with tremendous sponsor support this past year. We are very grateful for our fantastic sponsors. I want to also recognize the ongoing support of the CRTC who joined us for our 4th Annual CRTC Meet & Greet. We really appreciate the CRTC showing up every year and connecting with all the broadcasters at WAB! We were thrilled to recognize the best and brightest in Prairie broadcasting and feature amazing talent Tenille thanks to the support of FACTOR, the Government of Canada and Canadian private broadcasters! 1 On a personal note, I would like to thank the previous Presidents while I served on the board: • Richard Kroeker • Vic Dubois • Tom Newton • Mitch Bozak I would also like to encourage all of those from small market and independent stations to join the board. Please note the financial statements presented in this Annual Report are unaudited. Variance Report (Comparison with August 31, 2013) We experienced an income shortfall of -$922 in 2014 which was largely attributed to lower Conference registration revenue and additional costs associated with the transition to a new Association Manager. Because of cost control and another great sponsorship year we were able to keep the loss to a minimum. We’ve prepared the following chart to provide explanation for variances above $2,000 listed in the financial statement on the next page Account Variance Explanation In preparation for our 80th Anniversary Celebration we had anticipated some additional costs, but with the outstanding support of our sponsors and membership and the hard work of our board members we were still able to keep our overall costs in line. Sponsorship ($3,872) Reporting and coding of FACTOR sponsorship revenue and artist support expenses was different between 2013 and 2014. Registration ($13,657) In relation to paid registrations, we had 12 less delegates and 5 less spouses/companions than 2013. Account Variance Explanation Conference ($15,050) There were fewer paid attendees, speaker savings, less award recipients and lower printing expenses in 2014. Management Fees $2,280 Due to transition period incurred additional fees for Manager change. Directors’ Meetings & Travel $3,411 For the 80th Anniversary the Board of Directors invited 14 Past President’s and guests to join them for a special reception and dinner. Office & Misc. $2,209 Mainly attributed to purchase of onsite printer, gift for previous Manager and additional travel costs to Conference for new Manager.
