To date, SAM has amassed one of the world’s largest public collections of modern and contemporary Southeast Asian artworks, with a growing component in international contemporary art. The museum has showcased both local and international art practices, traditional and cutting edge art expressions. Through strategic alliances with international arts and cultural institutions, SAM has been facilitating visual arts education, exchange, research and development within the region and internationally. Armed with a whole new attitude, the first quarter of the New Year saw the unveiling of a fresh line-up of programmes for 2010. With an objective to breathe new life into the space and develop SAM into the contemporary arts centre in the region, we kicked off with the opening of two iconic exhibitions: Classic Contemporary: Southeast Asian Art from the Singapore Art Museum collection and FX Harsono: Testimonies. These two exhibitions signify the official embrace of the Singapore Art Museum’s vision to develop its contemporary art track. In April, we proudly present Ming Wong: Life of Imitation, Singapore’s first award winning exhibition at the prestigious Venice Biennale in 2009. Re-visit Singapore’s golden cinema age during preindependence days. The artist Ming Wong re-interprets films familiar to two generations of audience and evokes feelings of nostalgia with the films of Malay cinema pioneer P. Ramlee, Douglas Sirk and Wong Kar Wai, rare screen memorabilia as well as cinema posters and billboards by Singapore’s last surviving billboard painter. Expanding platforms to showcase fresh and compelling works of film, video and animation, we launch The Moving Image Gallery at SAM at 8Q. The Gallery kicks off its inaugural screening of five films from Singapore and the region in conjunction with the exhibition Classic Contemporary on April 30. SAM ushers in the mid-year school holidays with the launch of the inaugural Children’s Season. SAM at 8Q gets transformed into a magical ‘art garden’ with artist projects and artworks inspired by nature. With increasing visits from younger audiences and as part of our commitment as an educational organisation to nurture contemporary art appreciation and interest among children, we have set up The Learning Gallery, an interactive learning playhouse showcasing contemporary art works suitable for children. A new workshop space at 8Q provides expanded opportunities for our young participants to encounter the process of art-making and present their own works. Bring the little ones and step into our world of interactive and fun family activity with contemporary art this quarter! 04 Tan Boon Hui Director Singapore Art Museum 05 Calendar EXHIBITIONS PROGRAMMES Realism in Asian Art Apr May Jun Tue, 6 Apr | 7:30pm – 9pm | SAM at 8Q Artists in Person: Manit Sriwanichpoom Sat, 1 May | 2pm | The Moving Image Gallery, SAM at 8Q Popcorn Not Included: Dreams From The Third World Fri, 4 Jun | 7:30pm – 8:30pm | SAM Curator’s Tour: A Survey of Yeh Chi Wei 9 April to 4 July Singapore Art Museum Ming Wong: Life Of Imitation 22 April to 22 August Singapore Art Museum Wed, 7 Apr – Sat, 10 Apr | 7pm till late | Sculpture Square, 155 Middle Road Singapore 188977 Future of Imagination 6 Live Solo Performances Art Garden: Children’s Season at the Singapore Art Museum Fri, 9 Apr | 7:30pm – 8:30pm | SAM Curator’s Tour: Realism through Asian Eyes 14 May to 18 July SAM at 8Q Sat, 10 Apr | 2pm – 5pm | SAM Auditorium Future of Imagination 6 Forum Rediscovering Yeh Chi Wei Sun, 11 Apr | 2pm – 8pm | Sculpture Square, 155 Middle Road Singapore 188977 Black Market International with Guest Artists 27 May to 12 September Singapore Art Museum Classic Contemporary: Contemporary Southeast Asian Art from the Singapore Art Museum Collection Runs through 2 May SAM at 8Q FX Harsono: Testimonies Runs through 9 May Singapore Art Museum Earth and Water: Mapping Art in Southeast Asia Runs through 1 September Singapore Art Museum Seeing the Kites Again 又见风筝:吴冠中捐赠作品展 Runs through 14 December Singapore Art Museum 06 Tue, 13 Apr | 7:30pm – 9pm | SAM at 8Q Artists in Person: Sopheap Pich Tue, 20 Apr | 7:30pm – 9pm | SAM at 8Q Artists in Person: Suzann Victor Fri, 23 Apr | 7pm – 9pm | SAM Gallery 3.10, Video Room Visions: Realism in Asia Fri, 23 Apr | 7:30pm | China Square Central, Fountain Square, 18 Cross Street P. Inspired by the rich legacy, Wong re-reads “national cinema” constructed through language, role-playing and identity, by re-interpreting films that are familiar to audiences spanning two generations, and which engage with performative notions of mis-casting and parroting. The first is a compendium of works by P. Ramlee, the wunderkind of Malay cinema. The second is the Hollywood melodrama Imitation of Life (1959) by Douglas Sirk about a black mother and her “white” daughter. The third is Wong Kar Wai’s In the Mood for Love (2000) with actress Maggie Cheung rehearsing a scene where she confronts her spouse‘s infidelity. Curator’s Tour: Identity and Mimicry Join guest curator Tang Fu Kuen on an exploration into Ming Wong’s psyche and gain insights into the artist’s works. By choosing films the general audience would be familiar with, the artist through his re-interpretation, sheds light on the process of copying and development of an identity. Tang is a curator and dramaturg working in various contexts including performance, film and the visual arts, across contemporary and heritage arts development. Fri, 7 May | 7:30pm — 8:30pm | SAM Lobby Free admission. Registration required. Please e-mail [email protected] or call 6332 3220. Through these video interventions, the viewer is presented with questions relating to roots, hybrid and the politics of becoming. The exhibition also unveils cinema posters by Singapore’s last surviving billboard painter; rare screen memorabilia of a private collector; and documentaries by film-maker Sherman Ong. The Singapore Art Museum re-stages this award-winning exhibition with a new design and additional exhibits. This exhibition was first presented at the Singapore Pavilion, 53rd Venice Biennale 2009. It won the Biennale’s Special Jury Mention award. Tang Fu Kuen is the guest curator of this exhibition. 08 09 In Conjunction Event P. Ramlee: Tribute to a Legend In Conjunction Event Singapore Cinemas: The Locations of Film Exhibition China Square Central, Fountain Square, 18 Cross Street For updates and further information, please refer to the Singapore Film Society website: www.sfs.org.sg. Presentations by notable scholars and critics will feature histories of local places ranging from the beginnings of film exhibition in Singapore to locations such as “the Worlds” amusement parks, and popular cinemas such as the Cathay and Lido. Singapore Cinemas: The Locations of Film Exhibition is organised by the National University of Singapore’s Asia Research Institute, in conjunction with the National Library’s SG101 programme. Tan Sri P. Ramlee (1929 – 1973) was a film actor, director, singer and songwriter. For his many talents and contributions to the movie and music industries, he is regarded an icon of Malay entertainment during their golden age of the film industry in Singapore and Malaysia. In April and May, the Singapore Film Society will screen four P. Ramlee films, as part of their monthly outdoor screenings, to pay homage to this icon. Singapore has been home to a rich and diverse film culture, anchored by unique sites of exhibition showing films in various languages and formats. This workshop at the National Library, hopes to contribute to the history of film exhibition and film-going in Singapore by encouraging archival research as well as oral histories. Unlike the way the Realist movement evolved in 19th century Europe, Realism in Asia applied the same concepts to a different context - expressing Asia’s grapple with modernity, independence and nationhood. The powerful images produced during this period often inspired and incited action, and were even at times, suppressed and banned. Through the display of a select group of paintings from ten Asian countries, Realism in Asian Art examines how this important art movement touched Asia, weaving together a fascinating tale of heroism, valour and hope, in a time of turmoil that plagued Asia during the 20th century. This show is a special research exhibition by the National Art Gallery, Singapore, held on the premises of the Singapore Art Museum. Presenting Sponsor 12 Jointly Organised By Curator’s Tour: Realism through Asian Eyes Join curator, Joyce Fan and gain insight into the impact of the realist approach on selected paintings from Asian countries. Realist imagery was preferred by artists for its objective depiction of everyday characters and artists weaved social and political ideals of their times into the tapestry of their art making. Fri, 9 Apr | 7:30pm — 8:30pm | SAM Lobby Free admission. Registration required. Please e-mail [email protected]. Visions: Realism in Asia Visions: Realism in Asia, an associated event to the exhibition Realism in Asian Art, is a screening of short films that demonstrates the lyricism of everyday life in Southeast Asia, offering humour and insight into Asia and the world. A post-screening discussion follows. Fri, 23 Apr | 7pm – 9pm | SAM Gallery 3.10 Free admission. Registration required. Please e-mail Masitah at [email protected]. 13 Art Garden: Children’s Season at the Singapore Art Museum 14 May to 18 July 2010 SAM at 8Q Theodore Watson and Emily Gobeille, Funky Forest, 2007, Interactive video installation, Artist collection The Singapore Art Museum will host its inaugural Children’s Season in May. Known for his highly distinctive oil paintings, Yeh drew inspiration from a wide range of cultural sources, such as Han Dynasty carvings and Javanese batik. The results are innovative works that powerfully weave together Asian and Western art aesthetics, cultural sources and travel inspirations. A well-respected art educator and an influential leader in Singapore’s early art scene, Yeh frequently led the Ten Men Art Group on painting expeditions to various locations. His belief in striving for improvement and innovation, while maintaining a strong Southeast Asian identity encouraged other artists to emulate this enduring spirit. Organised by the National Art Gallery, Singapore, this exhibition will showcase Yeh’s illustrious artistic career, his contributions to Singapore, and examine how he continually celebrated the beauty of Southeast Asia through his art. Curator’s Tour: A Survey of Yeh Chi Wei Join curator, Ong Zhen Min and sojourn back in time through the art of Yeh Chi Wei, to discover the diverse cultural influences that informed and shaped his works. Fri, 4 Jun | 7:30pm – 8:30pm | SAM Lobby Free admission. Registration required. Please email [email protected]. This show is a special research exhibition by the National Art Gallery, Singapore, held on the premises of the Singapore Art Museum. 16 17 FX Harsono, Voice Without Voice / Sign, 1993 – 4, Silkscreen on canvas (9 panels), wooden stools and stamps, 143.5 x 95.5 cm each panel, Fukuoka Asian Art Museum collection FX Harsono: Testimonies Runs through 9 May 2010 Singapore Art Museum FX Harsono: Testimonies presents a survey of artwork by one of Indonesia’s foremost contemporary artists. FX Harsono played a pivotal role in the development of contemporary art in Indonesia, and continues to be actively involved in the art scene till today. This exhibition traces the shifts in the artist’s strategies of representation: from the ground-breaking conceptual works that re-defined art making during the Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru (New Art Movement) of the 1970s; to the politically-charged installations of the 1990s; to the artist’s recent investigations into issues of self, identity and personal histories. Included in this survey are seminal works drawn from the Singapore Art Museum’s permanent collection, as well as from other art institutions and private collections, such as Paling Top ’75 (1975) and Voice Without Voice (1994). 18 Through these various ‘testimonies’, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the political, social and cultural changes that have shaped Indonesian society, and the artist’s constant reevaluation and re-positioning of his role through this recent history. Presenting Sponsor Supporter 19 Wu Peng Seng, Casting the Net, 1950, Gelatin silverprint, 46 x 40.5cm, Collection of National Heritage Board Earth and Water: Mapping Art in Southeast Asia Seeing the Kites Again 又见风筝:吴冠中捐赠作品展 Runs through 1 Sep 2010 Singapore Art Museum Runs through 14 Dec 2010 Singapore Art Museum Southeast Asia comprises two broad geographical regions – the Mainland and the Archipelago. The former refers to Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar and Peninsular Malaysia. The latter is made up of the island arcs and archipelagos of the Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore and West Malaysia. In 2008, Chinese artist Wu Guanzhong donated 113 of his important works to the National Heritage Board, Singapore. This is the highest-value donation ever given to a public museum institution in Singapore. An internationally eminent artist, Wu is best known for marrying the distinct art form of traditional Chinese ink with modern concepts in Western art. Recently published as a seven-volume anthology, Wu’s writings provide deep insights into his aesthetics and art practice. The diverse region of Southeast Asia is home to about 500 million people. The history and society of Southeast Asia have been shaped by a confluence of geographical, historical and cultural forces. With exhibits drawn from the National Heritage Board’s permanent collection, the theme Earth and Water conjoins two of life’s basic elements with the Mainland and the Archipelago. These works by the region’s best-known artists further offer multiple manifestations of life, society and traditions of Southeast Asia. This show is a special research exhibition by the National Art Gallery, Singapore, held on the premises of the Singapore Art Museum. 20 Wu Guanzhong, Kites Seen Again 又见风筝, 2003, Oil on canvas, 61 x 46cm, Collection of National Heritage Board Showcasing 22 paintings from the donation, Seeing the Kites Again is an exhibition inspired by Wu’s metaphor of the kite. Since the 1960s, Wu Guanzhong has produced a great number works, based on his personal recollections. These works are centred around his home in the South of China, his childhood, as well as the villages and towns he has been to. His interest in life and his attention to ordinary scenes, infuse his art with an aesthetic quality that demonstrates a return to simplicity. This show is a special research exhibition by the National Art Gallery, Singapore, held on the premises of the Singapore Art Museum. 21 Classic Contemporary: Contemporary Southeast Asian Art from the Singapore Art Museum Collection Runs through 2 May 2010 SAM at 8Q Classic Contemporary shines the spotlight on Singapore Art Museum’s most iconic contemporary artworks in its collection. By playfully asking what makes a work of art “classic” or “contemporary” — or “classic contemporary” — this accessible and quirky exhibition introduces new audiences to the ideas and art forms of contemporary art. A stellar cast of painting, sculpture, video, photography and performance art from across Southeast Asia are brought together and given the red-carpet treatment, and the entire SAM at 8 Queen Street building is transformed into a dramatic stage for these stars and icons. Yet beneath the glamour, many of the artworks also raise and probe serious issues — often asking critical and challenging questions about society, nation and the history of art. Since its inception in 1996, SAM has focused on collecting the works of artists practising in the region, and many of these once-emerging artists have since established notable achievements on regional and international platforms. This exhibition marks the start of SAM’s new contemporary art programming centred on enabling artistic development through the creation of exhibition and programming platforms, as well as growing audiences for contemporary art. Classic Contemporary offers an opportunity to revisit major works by Suzann Victor, Matthew Ngui, Simryn Gill, Redza Piyadasa, Jim Supangkat, Nindityo Adipurnomo, Agnes Arellano, Agus Suwage, and Montien Boonma, among others. Artist presentations, moving image screenings and performances complement the Classic Contemporary experience. Supported by National Heritage Board’s Heritage Gala 2008 22 Vincent Leow, Money Suit, 1992, Paper collage and cotton suit, 88 x 55 x 7cm, Singapore Art Museum collection 23 Sopheap Pich, Cycle, 2004–2008, Rattan and wire, 420 x 25 x 90 cm, Singapore Art Museum collection Artists in Person Four artists jointly exhibiting at Classic Contemporary will be present to speak about their art practice and work processes. If you missed Amanda Heng’s presentation on 18 March, be sure to catch Manit Sriwanichpoom (Waiting for the King), Sopheap Pich (Cycle), Suzann Victor (His Mother is a Theatre) and Nindityo Adipurnomo (Hiding Rituals and the Mass Production II). Free admission. Registration required. Please e-mail [email protected] or call 6332 3220. Manit Sriwanichpoom Tue, 6 Apr | 7.30pm — 9pm | SAM at 8Q Manit Sriwanichpoom, known for his photography and video works, is an artist whose practice addresses the social and political issues of modern Thailand. His works, such as the Pink Man series and This Bloodless War, are infused with dark, subversive humour, combining the glossy imagery of a consumerist society with stark images of the cruel and obscene effects of global processes. He has presented his work at international the 6th Gwangju Biennale (2006), the 1st Pocheon Asian Art Festival (2005) and the 50th Venice Biennale (2003). Sriwanichpoom is also a writer and critic, and has published art criticism and articles on topics such as gender equality and state censorship in the Thai periodical Silpa Wattanatham. Sopheap Pich Tue, 13 Apr | 7:30pm — 9pm | SAM at 8Q 24 Sopheap Pich is one of Cambodia’s most well-known and significant contemporary artists. Trained in painting at the University of Massachusetts, he found upon his return to Cambodia from the United States, that his paintings did not connect with the Cambodian people. In response, he began experimenting with commonplace materials and visual metaphors familiar to Cambodians. This led to the development of his rattan and wire sculptures that now dominate his work. These sinuous and organic forms invoke shapes and forms of body Suzann Victor, His Mother Is A Theatre (detail), 1994, Mixed media: human hair, motors, velvet, bread, fishing line, iron woks, table and lights, Dimensions variable, Singapore Art Museum collection parts or indigenous tools, pointing to pertinent socio-economic issues in Cambodia. Pich has exhibited extensively and recently participated in the 4th Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale (2009) and the 6th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (2009). Suzann Victor Tue, 20 Apr | 7:30pm — 9pm | SAM at 8Q Suzann Victor received her Diploma in Fine Arts (Painting) from LASALLE College of the Arts Singapore. She has gained widespread recognition for her dramatic installations that combine a theatrical flair with her fluency in cultural theory. She addresses subjects such as the female body and the post colonial condition. Victor has exhibited at the Thermocline of Art (2007), the 2nd Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (1996), and the 49th Venice Biennale (2001). In 1991, Victor assumed the artistic directorship of the artists’ initiative 5th Passage Ltd. Nindityo Adipurnomo Tue, 27 Apr | 7:30pm — 9pm | SAM at 8Q The works of Nindityo Adipurnomo reflect his early and enduring fascination for the tensions and traditions of his native Javanese culture. His choice of materials and exploration of themes challenge viewers to reassess their assumptions on issues such as the roles and position of women in society. An important aspect of his practice is to collaborate with indigenous craftsmen, who help him realise his works. In 1988, Nindityo and his spouse, artist Mella Jaarsma, co-founded Cemeti Art House in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A champion of Indonesian contemporary art, Cemeti welcomed unconventional artists rejected by conservative institutions of the day, and continues to be a driving force in both the Indonesian and international art. 25 The Moving Image Gallery The Moving Image Gallery is a new platform dedicated to showcasing fresh and compelling video art, digital film, independent movies, art cinema, and experimental animation. By exploring contemporary issues through these visual media, audiences will discover new ways of experiencing art. About the director: Ho Tzu Nyen is a filmmaker and artist born and based in Singapore. His projects traverse the fields of film, visual arts and the performing arts. His works, including Utama (2003), Singapura (2006), Lucky 7 (2007), and Newton (2009) have been presented at major venues around the world. In the film, although not explicitly stated, money is king and economic development is top priority.” About the director: Before making his debut feature, Kan Lume wrote, directed and produced for television. His first feature film The Art Of Flirting, was named Best ASEAN Feature at the 2005 Malaysian Video Awards. His second feature Solos (2007) was the first Singaporean film to be in competition at the prestigious AFI Fest in Los Angeles, but was barred from a full-length, uncut screening in Singapore. Adjeng is a young writer haunted by the shadows of her past. She lives two separate lives: an aggressive party-girl to her lovers and friends; and a passive daughter to her mother. Her mother’s objections create a dilemma for her, but she gives vent to her aggression through writing. About the director: Controversial writer Djenar Maesa Ayu started writing for national newspapers but is best known for her award-winning experimental short story collection They Say, I’m A Monkey! (2002), in which she unflinchingly chronicles the sometimes-scandalous underbelly of Indonesian society. They Say, I’m A Monkey! is her first film, for which she won the Best Newcomer Director at the 2009 Indonesian Film Festival. 27 The Big Durian Amir Muhammad, Malaysia, 2003, 75 mins, Rated NC-16 Sun, 2 May | 2pm | The Moving Image Gallery, SAM at 8Q On the night of 18 October 1987, a soldier ran amok with an M16 rifle in Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown district. His outburst triggered panic and rumours of racial riots in the Malaysian city. Did this act trigger the infamous Internal Security Act clampdown nine days later? Did the Malaysian public’s view of the police, media, judiciary, royalty and political process subsequently undergo a radical shift? The narrator of The Big Durian speaks to 23 Malaysians (some real, others fictional) about the circumstances surrounding reactions to the incident.
