It is once again pleasing to be able to report that the most recent surf life saving season
has bee n another very successful one for Long Reef SLSC . Our beach patrols conti nue to
deliver an excel lent standard of beach management and lifesav ing services to our local
community. This is a t rue credit to all of the Club's active patrolling members , ou r spon sors
and the many hands behind th e scene who ensure that the Club r uns smoothly and our
first aid and rescue equ ipment is maintained in good cond ition .
Our patrols undert ook 55 rescues and provided first aid treatment to 123 peopl e in t he
2006/ 7 season and we were judged as providing an excellent life saving service in the Surf
Life Saving Sydney Northern Beaches Patrol Assessment Competition .
Dexion , LJ Hooker Colla roy, Spitfire Communications and Dee Why Automotive
have each made significant ongoing contributions to the successful operation of Long
Reef's beach patrols and there is no question that t he quality of the service we provide and
the equipment we enj oy is largely due to the generosity of these organisations. MEGA and
Kingsway Pharmacy are also va luable contributors to our life saving activities through
the provis ion of all consumab les for patrol and training activities. Please ensure you
support these businesses and take the opportunity to thank them in person.
Surf Life Saving Syd ney Northern Beaches Bra nch continues to actively support Long Reef
SLSC and all clubs on the northe rn beaches . Branch President Tony Haven and his team
have continued to bui ld on their very successful past and improve and expand the services
they provide. Their many sponsorship arrangements, in particular Coca Cola , DHL,
Warring a h Mall and Energy Australia , continue to be of great assistance and we thank
t hese sponsors for their partnerships with the surf life saving movement.
Long Reef also wishes to acknowledge the contribution that Wa r ringah Council ma kes to
our operations . Th e Club looks fo rward to continuing t o work with the Adm inistrator Dick
Persson and Council staff t o ensure that a functional and affordable redevelopment of our
cl ubhouse faci lities t akes place in the near future. A new set of Concept Plans has been
developed by Counci l at no cost to t he Club and with a little refinement I am confident that
t hese wi ll ga in wider community and NSW Government support. With a little luck the new
facilities may be bu ilt and in operation by Christmas 2008. Th is will naturally require a
Herculea n effort from al l quarters so if your are in any way able to help please do so.
On a very sad note Ray Van Weeren passed away during the season . On beha lf of th e Club
I wou ld like to ex press our deepest sympathy to his wife Robyn and the whole Va n Weeren
fami ly. Ray was an excellent club member, a magnificent supporter of th e Nippers and will
always be remembered for his happy smiling face.

Treas ure r, Ann Stewart (and very able right
hand man Mark Stewart), provided nothing

short of an excellent performance in 2006(7. Our Auditor was provided with a complete
and professional set of accounts within 4 weeks of the close of our financial year and
commented on them being of an excellent standard.
Tony Scarlett has co-ordinated a very wel l run Nippers programme during the season and
provided high quality input into the management of the Cl ub. I would like to thank Trish
Chaney and more recently Sharon Newling for ensuring that we all have some fantastic
Long Reef clothing to enjoy.
The internal management of the Club has been at some stages cha llenging this season and
to borrow a quote from the Long Reef Annual report for the 1958(59 season:
by his daughter La out the back on the beach he loved so dearly.
I wou ld like you all to take a minute in this the Year of the Surf Life Saver to reflect on all
those members of the Club both past and present w ho have make a contribution to the
success of Long Reef SLSC. It has been, and continues to be, a great compliment to all
these individuals that we take our rightful place as in integral part of undoubtedly one of
the finest volun t eer organisations in the world.
Thank you for your contribution and I look forward to seeing you on the sunny side of the
sand dune in the near future.

"As usual, failure to carry out the job delegated and also a lack of responsibility towards
the committee were obvious with some members but, on the whole, the administration of
the Club was easier than before. "
While this statement was from the early years of t he Club's development it is sti ll very
valid today. It is critical that those members who take positions on the Management
Committee make the time available to ensure that their area of responsibility is managed
efficiently. Each position is important to the successful functioning of the Club and non
performance inevitably has a flow on effect to increase the load on other members of the
Committee . Our objective must be to work together in a professional and effective manner
for the benefit of the Club as a whole and not to pursue individual interests or act in a
negative and counterproductive manner.
The Long Reef cap has been a reg ul ar sight in competition. With our youngest competitor
being around 8 years old and our most senior well over 60, I th ink it is fair to say that we
provide opportunities for just about everyone. You wil l find details of the Club's competitive
activities in later sections of the Annual Report, however I think it is fair to say that many
members have enjoyed surf life saving competition and the Club has enjoyed a sprinkle of
success at Branch, State and National level. It was excel lent to see the Longy cap in an
Australia Championship final in Scarborough but equally rewarding to see a strong team of
Long Ruffians in Patrol, IRB and Surf Boat competitions throughout the season.
Some of you may be aware that Long Reef's participation in IRB co mpetition was
interrupted through disqualification due to an inadvertent technical breach of th e rules.
There are definitely opportunities for SLSA and SLSNSW to improve the way in which these
competitions are organised and the rules under which they are conducted. I hope these
matters are addressed promptly so all competitors have the opportunity to continue to
develop their life saving skills .
On the 4'h of November 1956 Long Reef SLSC hosted a Surf Carnival in honour of Group
Captain Douglas Bader - 50 years later to the day Rob Urquhart, the man who was
responsible for the formation of Long Reef SLSC and our March Past teams standard bearer
at that carnival, passed away. Rob was passionate about Long Reef and the true spi rit of
mateship and camaraderie which flourished
between members of the Club. A large
group of Rob's family and friends paid final
respects to Rob as his ashes were scattered

It gives me great pleasure to submit the 57 th Annual Report and Financia l Statements of
Long Reef SLSC, covering the activities of the Club for the 2006/2007 season.
In my first year as Secretary I had much to learn and would like to thank those members
that have guided me and assisted with the administration side of the club. Some would
consider administration the least exciting part of the club, nonetheless it is vital in ensuring
the Club 's continued success. I hope to further improve and develop the administration of
the Club in the coming years. Thank you to Meredith Weeks and Stella Watson for taki ng
the minutes when I was unable to attend a meeting.
I would like to thank Peter Clarke (Clarkey) our tireless Registrar who handles all of the
incoming email correspondence, manages the entry of the Club's membership into
SurfGuard, and keeps the Club looking spick and span . What ever would we do without
you 7 Ann Stewart also deserves a special thanks for doing what can only be described as a
truly amazing job as Treasurer and assisted me to no end.
A big thank you to Trish Chaney who has had many successfu l years as t he Clubs Uniforms
Coordinator. Next Season Trish has taken on the challenge of Nippers Supervisor and
passed the Uniform reins onto Sharon Newling who together with Doug Lucas have
developed a great new range of merchandise and a fabulous sponsorship with Spank
Swimwear.
I am delighted to report that thanks to the efforts of Scott Plunkett we have updated the
Constitution so that it now accurately represents all the changes from the last few years
and is completely indexed and cross referenced.
I would like to thank the members of the Management Committee for their ongoing
support of the Club throughout the season and putting in the many hours that are involved
with holding a position on the Management Committee. It ' is great to see the younger
members stepping up to fill important committee roles in addition to maintaining the
stability that the older experienced members provide.
This season members were saddened with the loss of two of the Club's key members. Rob
Urquhart, one of Long Reefs founding members, sadly passed away on the 4th November
2006. Devastatingly two months later we lost Ray Van Weeren. I knew Ray as a jovial
father whose children I taught as Nippers. Ray became an integral part of the club
aSSistin g in everything from Patrols and Water Safety to Training and Social Events. His
cheeky smile will be sadly missed around the club.
The Year of The Lifesaver was celebrated in style with a formal dinner held at the Town
Hall where two tables of Long Ruffians mixed with the who's who in lifesaving and
celebrated a fabulous 100 years of Surf Life Saving.
It is an exciting time for the Club as it finally appears that a new club house is in our not
too distant future. As our membership continues to grow the need for a larger club house

Well again Long Reef SLSC has had a very memorable season. Memorable for some
fantastic work on the beach, great participation, competition results in a variety of areas
and the unfortunate passing away of several prominent club members.
2006/07 Long Reef SLSC Lifesaving Team
LRSLSC U17 Patrol Camp, NSW Champions
Our major strength is still focused around the commitment and dedication of our Beach
Management Team ensuring that we continue to maintain a safe aquatic environment for
the community to enjoy. To both my Vice Captains, Mark Nisbet and Lachlan Gadd you
have both made a fantastic contribution this season ensuring the patrols continue to
function and that the cCub does not breach its Patrol Service Agreement with SLSNSW or
the Deed of Agreement with Warringah Council. Also special thanks to our Junior Captains
Stella Watson and Nathan Gibson who have also helped in a similar capacity. We
performed 55 rescues this season, attended to 123 First Aid cases and performed 2759
preventive actions.
For the third consecutive season Long Reef SLSC was equal first in the SNB Patrol
Assessment Competition. Unfortunately the Club did not win its 3" successive IRB with
Newport SLSC winning this season on a count back. Still credit must be paid to the
patrollers and Patrol Captains who ensured we received a perfect inspection of each patrol.
It does help when each time they came to do an inspection they came across either the
SLSNSW Patrol Competition U17 State Champions or members of the Open Patrol
Competition Team. Well done for maintaining such high standards.
For those who have been around a number of years you will have noticed just how much
the standard of our patrolling equipment has improved. The Club has been fortunate over
the last 5 years to build up a lot of quality equipment through the successful application of
gear and equipment grants. The Club is now in a very strong position and has some of the
finest lifesaving equipment available. None more impressive than our new Rh ino Yamaha
bike sponsored by Spitfire Communications. This bike is simply sensational carrying
Oxygen, first aid, defibrillator, rescue board and tube, bu ilt in radio , PA address system ,
spinal collars, spinal boards and more. Special mention to Jim Selosse fo r the many many
hours he spent preparing the bike for patrols.
This season I placed a tremendous focus on improving on last season 's performance of the
Long Reef Lifesaving Team. With a lot of hard training in a particularly meticulous
competition discipline the teams were ready. As a resu lt of their train ing and coach ing not
only did the competitors improve their competition skills but also gained great experience
for patrol work. The goal next season is to again improve on these performances and bri ng
home Australian medals.

With over 800 members it is important that we focus on commun ication next season and
keep our membership and sponsors more
informed of up and coming events. The Longy
website did still remain a useful tool and I thank
our Web administrator David Prentis for this ongoing efforts.
Throughout the season we saw our Cadets involved in a wide range of activities. This
includecj a trip to Kiama and lambaroo Recreation park as well as a group of around 15
cadets aged 14-17 from Cairns in Far North Queensland, who traveled to Long Reef and
were billeted with Long Reef families for 4 days. The Cairns members enjoyed Sydney's
surf, going out in IRB's, let Skis and catching plenty of Longy waves. All in all a great time
was enjoyed by all.
I would like to thank Bernadette McAllinden for providing her time this summer running a
swim squad twice a week for those interested Club members and the lifesaving team. Pete
Clarke for his constant support, level head and life advice he has provided me with.
Clarkey is a legend and has again this season assisted me behind the scenes, especially
with the patrol hours using SurfGuard. lim Selosse who has again this season been brilliant
on patrols and supporting lifesaving services. He has filled in on patrols on a number of
occasions as well as been a big supporter in the IRB area as well as working on the gear
trailer, IRB repairs and new Rhino. lim really does deserve the award of Club Member of
the Year having been at the beach almost every weekend this season. Dave Watson for his
continuous support of the Emergency and First Aid Supplies, Tom Rees and Todd Whiley
assisting in the IRB's and Shore school this season. Your efforts were greatly appreciated.
To Andrew Robson and Mem Weeks our Chief Instructor and Assistant Chief Instructor for
your amazing amount of hard work this year. I cong ratulate both of you on your marriage.
I thank you for not only training the new members but for continuing to train our existing
members and increasing their knowledge, skills and abilities. The improved standards on
patrol are a tribute to the professionalism that you have both displayed. Andrew I believe
may be stepping down at the end of this season from the role of Chief Instructor after 5
seasons. I thank him for his efforts over this time in what has become a very demanding
role. The role of Chief Instructor will now be split to Chief Instructor and Chief Assessor
and it is hoped that these new roles, as a part of the Beach Management Team, will share
the workload more evenly in seasons to come. Also a big thank you to others who assisted
in training this year, Pete Chaney, Mark Nisbet, Ann Stewart, Shane Stewart, Lachlan Gadd
and a special mention to David Badlan who has been a great assistance in the training area
and on patrols. I also congratulate Dave on his marriage to ' Debbie Watson. I wish both
couples all the very best for your futures together. I also welcome and congratulate each
of our new Bronze Medallion holders. A remarkable achievement for all of you and an event
I know you wi ll value for the rest of your life. Welcome to the Club and patrols. You only
get out what you put in so have a go.
Ann Stewart, who has filled the role of Treasurer this season,
also deserves a mention for her tremendous support . Ann
has always been willing to help and has provided so much
assistance behind the scenes in administration and finance.
Well done to each of the Patrol Captains and patrol members
this season. Especially our cadets who have been everywhere
this season and filled in any holes on patrols when they have
occurred.
Again this season we had no critical or major incidents.

Special mention to Shore School, Nigel Scozzi, fe llow teachers and the boys. Shore
continues to grow each year. They take on a lot of responsibilities on patrol performing
about 15-17 patrols during the season on Saturday mornings. We are finally starting to
retain Shore boys. Hopefully we can continue this trend in years to come. This year we had
a large Shore vs Long Reef and old boys carnival which was a great success. Shore again
managed to win the overa ll points score but this season was very close. Hopefully next
year we may manage to get a few more old boys back and we can take them!

A big thank you to all those members who stood up and assisted at various levels in the
Sydney Northern Beaches Branch. Without the support of the clubs the branch would
struggle to perform many roles such as central examinations/ running of carnivals and
other functions. We have continued to improve upon the number of members who have
volunteered in a number of capacities. We have a large number of people helping as
examiners I assessors. We also have a number of Duty Officers/ Radio Operators, Officials
and a Patrol Assessment Officer. This season we saw Tom Rees, Peter Selosse and Jim
Selosse all receive their PWC, Jet Ski licence and join Andrew Robson and I in performing
voluntary patrols for the Northern Beaches Support Services. Keep volunteering guys
there are numerous roles to take on at Branch Level both for lifesavers and those
interested in other areas. Its also a nice break and chance to do someth ing different at
another level of the organisation.
I would like to extend my personal thanks to each of our sponsors at a National, State,
Branch and Club level. Our national partnership with DHL is fantastic and never before
have we seen so much financial support being poured into SLS. Special mention to our club
sponsors, Dexion, Dee Why RSL, and LJ Hooker Colla roy our major sponsors and Dee
Why Automotives Services who are in their 22 nd year, Dynamic Press and MEGA
(Medical Equipment & Gases Australia). Without your on-going assistance we would be
unable to continue our training and development programs and the provision of a first
class water safety service for the community. In the absence of a Fundraising director I
took on this role in the last few months of the season and we are now pleased to welcome
Winning Appliances as sponsors of our boards and Lifesaving Team, Strata Unit
Underwriters of our new patrol twin hull IRB and Spank Swimwear who have sponsored
our swimwear needs.
The season for me has been so rewarding in so many areas but also very demanding. We
unfortunately had an on-going problem in relation to the number of parking stickers issued
to our patrolling members. The council's sticker provisions unfortunately not taking into
account anybody who was U18 or lived within the area either at home or renting and hence
without access to Warringah parking stickers. I thank those who personally supported me
through those months. I also thank those members of the public who supported the club
with over 30 parking permits being donated. The Council Parking Permit Policy has now
been restructured and looks as though it will remove most of the problems we have
previously experienced.
On a sad note we say goodbye to two members of the club . More wi ll be said in other areas
of the report but it was very sad for us
to say goodbye to two of our finest,
Rob Urquhart, one of our founding
members and Ray Van Wee ren, who's
jovial personality will be missed.
Personally the loss of Ray, so tragically
young, is very difficult to accept. Ray
has influenced and touched so many of
our lives and it is hard to put into
words just how greatly he will be
missed.

On a positive note I wou ld li ke to congratulate Ross Matthews who became the Clubs first
Life Member of SLSNSW and also a rec ipient of an OAM for services to Lifesaving. Ross's
ach ievements are presented in another section of this report. Ross has given so much to
the Club and the wider movement since joining the club in 1961. Ross now lives in the Blue
Mountains, Blackheath with wife Oianne but still performs Active Reserve patrols, in fact is
sti ll one of the clubs most diligent patrollers standing on the flag with a whistle in hand for
most of his 4 hour patrol. Ross is a true example of the Australian surf lifesaver and I
congratulate him on this fine achievement.
On Saturday 28 th April, 2007 the Club finished off the season hosting Round 1 of the
SLSNSW IRB Premiership series. The carnival was very well attended by over 250
competitors and 16 clubs from around NSW. The carnival was a fantastic success and I
thank those involved in helping me organise and run the event. The carnival committee
being, Tom Rees, MA Selosse, Todd Whiley and Sean McLintock. It was also great to see so
many Lon g Reef members competing with 30 members having a go throughout the day.
I further congratulate those involved in the success 57 t h annual dinner on Saturday 19th
April, 2007 . Dan Mumford and Lucy Redmond did a great job and it shows you the strength
of our membership coming through with the dinner being organised by these juniors.
Congratulations to all the award winners as printed. Special mention to Sean McLintock
one of our new members taking out the Recruit of the year award. In his first season since
getting his Bronze in December, 2006 he managed to make the top 10 patrollers, received
his Bronze Medallion, Radio Operators, Defib rillator certificate, Advanced Resuscitation
Certificate and IRB Crewman's Award. He stepped into the Open Patrol Competition Team
winni ng a State Silver medal, joined the Longy IRB race team and was a key member in
the successful organisation and running of round 1 SLSNSW IRB premiership held at Long
Reef. So much so has Sean become a key member of the Club that he even installed his
very own shower head in the male showers. Congratulations Sean on a fantastic season.

8 Instructor's Re ort
The 2006/ 2007 season at Long Reef SLSC has been a great season for training. It has
been a year of huge change with the transition to the nationally accredited qualifications
and the changes of the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. This season saw
approximately 580 awards received by our members. Congratulations to every Longy
member. Training and education has always been an integral area for Long Reef SLSC.
Training provides our patrols with the knowledge they need to deliver a professional water
safety/rescue service and keep our beach safe.
Surf Life Saving Australia Training Division has transitioned to a Registered Training
Organisation (RTO) under the Australian Quality Training Framework (ATQF). This
transition has enabled us to provide our surf lifesavers the opportunity to gain
accreditation in Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) - a nationally recognised
award under the ATQF (this award was formally known as the Bronze Medallion). This is
the biggest development in SLS training since the foundation of the Bronze Medallion in
1910.
This season, we saw major changes to resuscitation as the National Board of Lifesaving has
adopted the Austral ian Resuscitation Council guidelines. The main changes include:

dedication and enthusiasm of our members and also those who have supported me as
Chief Instructor and Mem as Assistant Chief Instructor.
Thank you to all who have participated in training this
season and to those who have given countless hours of
their time to assist training, especially Dave Badlan and
Lachlan Gadd. Other Longy trainers have included Ray
Van Weeren, Ann Stewart, Pete Chaney, Doug Lucas,
Mark Nisbet, Shane Stewart and Andrew De Silva and also
to the boys in the rubber duckies - Tom Rees, Todd
Whiley, Pete and Jim Selosse and everyone else who gave
their time and effort.
This season heralded another great achievement - Mem and I got hitched!!! For all of you
who are married you would know this is a time consuming process I A huge thank you to
Dave for running the Certificate II and Lachlan for running ARC. We couldn 't have coped
without you both!
I would like to make special mention to Ray Van Weeren and Ann Stewart who achieved
their Training Officer Certificate II this season. They were both truly inspirational to all the
candidates. The looks on their candidates faces said it all at the end of their Part B exam they were all so excited!
Thank you to all the Longy assessors who have continued their examining and have
aligned their skills with the movement to the Certificate II.

The change in resuscitation took effect within SLSA frorT) 1 August 2006.
We have continued to train and ensure our members are proficient with the Certificate II
and the new two part assessment. We have had excellent feedback from candidates in
regards to the "on-the-job assessment" they are required to complete as part of their
training. The on-the-job assessment requires candidates to attend and participate in a
morning and afternoon patrol and assist with patrol set up, patrol pack up and general
patrol activities under the guidance of the patrol captain. A huge thank you, to all the
Longy members who have so warmly welcomed the new Certificate II candidates into their
patrols, it is great to hear from our training candidates how warmly they were welcomed.
The achievements of this season would not have been possible if it were not for the
Toward the end of the season in preparation for the next one, Warringah Mall have kindly
donated a Defib Training unit to each club on the Peninsula. With the units we are able to
ensure as many members as possible are trained to use these life saving devices.
Defibrillators are becoming an integral part of every Surf Life Saving clubs medical
eqUipment. Defibrillators, in combination with CPR, have been known to increase the
chance of survival dramatically by (up to 60-70%) as compared to manual CPR alone.
I would also like to make special mention of the continued contribution by our Cadets this
season. Their dedication to furthering their education seemed endless. They were
constantly asking us - "So when is the next training course?" and offering their help with
training younger members - and also those that were their senior. Our Juniors and Cadets
are the future of our Club and our community. I am sure that with the team we have going
forward the coming seasons at Longy will be successful.
Congratulations and a huge thank you to Dave Badlan who received the Rob Murray
Memorial Training Officer of the Year award. His constant training and examining support
was hugely appreciated.
Thank you also to Debbie for her support of Dave and
congratulations on their recent marriage - must be the season for it!
Long Reef Surf Ufe Saving Club
On a very sad note, we saw the sudden passing of one of our great Long Ruffians - Ray
Van Weeren. Ray assisted with training t he first Bronze Squad this season, obtaining his
Instructors Certificate. His encouragem ent of all t he candidates who found the qualifying
Run-Swim-Run challenging was one of a true leader, caring person and a great trainer. It
was Ray's voice sounding out 'you can do it' and 'come one, let's go' no matter what the
conditions which inspired the entire squad. He will be sadly missed.
Our Juniors this year played a very active part in training this season receiving 297 awards.
This season the training program contin ued to promote additional awa rd s to the Surf
Rescue Certificate . Well done to all involved and a specia l thank you t o all the Age
Managers who assisted.
The focus on training in the last four seasons has provided a massive benefit to our
patrolling strengths. Training and education th is seaso n has encouraged membership
retention and activity overall within the Club , with members asking wh at course they can
do next when they finish - we love that kind of motivation.

The Nipper season started in October with the number of participants increasing to 330,
way beyond anybodies expectations. The first day saw the court yard full with children and
parents overflowing onto the public walkways. In the under 6 age group alone there were
75 children , almost double the entire amount of children for Nippers when the program
started at Longy 10 years ago. Some drastic cha nges had to be made to accommodate
these numbers, so the starting times for the age groups was staggered and age groups
had to be subdivided. After some minor issues were sorted out, the children ventured over
the sand dune and enjoyed the activities. The beach set up had race tracks occupying the
whole of the southern end of the beach from the lifeguards tower to the lagoon. The
season had begun ...
A major factor that disrupted several weeks was the weather, which played havoc
throughout the season with the first 3 weeks seei ng the water events cancelled due to
rough seas. Following this a bizarre cold current swept the beaches making the children
shiver as if they were swimming in June, even though it was the middle of summer. Even
on presentation day the tent was set up for an outdoor affair only to have a southerly
change sweep through and force the event inside at the last minute. Despite all th is the
season was a success.
Lots of Nippers got down and boogied at the disco in October ran by Dan Mumford and the
social committee. Fun was had by all with many parents joining in. Twilight Nippers and
the usual Christmas BBQ were also held during the year to add to the social scene and
ra ise some money for the Club.
For the first time we also hosted a fun day with South Narrabeen and Narrabeen su rf clubs
to provide activities for those children that don't go to carnivals. The day was a success
with different coloured nipper's caps on Long Reef beach for the first time in a long while.
Sophie Hardcastle was the ' Nipper of the Year.' She has been competing since the under
6s and her hard work and dedication with the sport has paid off.
Her major highlights
were a bronze medal in the board riding at the NSW State Carnival, a gold medal in board
and another bronze for board riding at the Branch Championships.
At Cub level all the kids improved their skills through the efforts of age managers and
other members giving pOinters on how to race smarter. Board training was held each
Friday afternoon with plenty of people attending . This will be held again next year with all
members invited. The following children excelled in the respected age groups by winning
medals in the Cub Championships:

There were some outstanding results in competition. Sophie Hardcastle as previously
mentioned won a bronze medal in the under 13 board riding. The under 11 beach relay
team of Kobe Kellerman, Megan Lutze, Rachael Weatherley and Claudia Lonngren-Hall also
put in a commendable effort.
We had two gold medalists at The Branch Championships with Sophie again winning her
board race. Megan Lutze also won the under 11 flag race in a hot field.

I won't mention all the people who helped out this year as the list is too long. To the
Nippers Committee and the 35 age managers who all put in a lot of time and effort during
the year I thank you. The BBQ team who managed to raise a $1000 for new equipment
took on a huge task and their efforts were rewarded. A great deal of organization goes on
behind the scenes so if anybody does want to get involved for next season please come
forward, more help is always needed and greatly appreciated.
I would also like to thank our sponsors who helped the Nippers directly. IPAC

This year also saw the passing of Ray Van Weeren. Ray and his family played an intricate
part in the setting up of the Long Reef Nippers and through these efforts the Nippers
programme is what it is today. He could always be counted on being at the beach and coordinating the water safety. He would always encourage the kids in the water getting out
the back on boards and helping them in through the break. Although popping up in the
middle of the younger girls swim races with sea weed on his head
and looking like a sea monster might have put a couple of them off.

It has been yet again another very successful season for the Longy Cadets.
great group of enthusiastic cadets this season, including quite a few new faces,
great to see . As well as our Sunday morning events, the Cadets participated
many different aspects of the Club and have proven that our Club's future is
hands.

It was a great weekend with fun had by all. Thank you to Doug, Mark, Robbo, Mem and
Lockie for supervising us on the trip.
In January we had a group of cadets from Cairns visit Long Reef for a few days. They
joined us over the weekend for a few friendly competitions, participated in our board
training, supported Longy at the Queenscliff carnival and put up a good fight against us at
Zone 3. Everyone from both Cairns and Longy had a great time and hopefully we can
arrange a trip up North sometime soon. Another thank you to all the families that helped
out and billeted the group.
On the competition side of things, once again we had some outstanding results from our
Cadets. At the Branch championships we managed to come home with a heap of medals
including 2 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze. The success continued at State Championships
where our U17 Patrol Comp Team (Stella Watson, Marin Suzuki, Nathan Gibson and James
Thom ) won gold, Shane Stewart won silver in the U19 Male Champion Lifesaver and
Andrew Selosse won bronze in the U15 Male Champion Lifesaver. Shane went on to
compete at the Nationals over in Perth where he was placed 8th in Australia.
Also, congratulations to all our Cadet members who achieved awards this season,
especially those w ho gained their SRC and BM awards and are now joining us on patrol.
Our Cadets play a vital role in the patrols at Long Reef, making up over 20% of all
patrollers and putting in many hours on the beach.
Thank you to all the senior members who helped out this season, especially Doug and Mark
for coordinating Cadets this season, and Michael Fielding for volunteering to take over
towards the end of the season when things became busy.

Competition is th e life blood of a surf club, It is the arena for honing skills that may one
da y sa ve a life, It is also an ar ea where the great bond of mateship is developed from
which lifelo ng friendsh ips are made to say nothing of the pleasures provided by the many
trips away,
This year saw many new competitors enter the competition arena. In summer competition
it was particula r ly pleasing to see so many Nippers step-up to the Cadet competition in the
swi m, board and iron man. The events take on a new look for these competitors because of
the la rge boards used and the shake down of clubs competing, where it seemed only
ex perts remained , It was a credit to the training conducted by Pete Chaney that so many
kids prod uced so many great results,
Next season wil l focus as much on team events as on individual events since that is where
the most excitement and success seems to lie for Longy, Many of these Cadets were then
lured int o, for them what was a brand new form of competition, Lifesaving, in which the
Clu b has been so successful over the last few years, Its success is the result of the strict
tra ining regime that Doug Lucas has set in place and so well supported by the experienced
cadets and seniors, The Club competed in this event with great success at Branch, State,
and National level w ith many medals to show for their efforts,
The Club continued to compete on the sand but to a lesser extent. Naturally the Nippers
excelled again but some Cadets also were seen competing throughout the season, This
area of competition desperately needs a coach to train the kids coming through and
coo rdinate their competition activities.
The boaties gave no less this season with crews both male and female from beginners to
the experienced hammering away all season, It is pleasing to see the coordinated way that
th eir captain Stephen Cox recruits many of our members into the highly disciplined training
reg ime that runs nearly year round,
Wi nter competition was just as enthusiastically approached with IRB racing attracting a lot
of new blood, Training was underway on the back of the state summer carnivals and
sh owed that the Club has so much enthusiasm and talent for this event, It is hoped this
con tinues to grow throughout winter and into next season.

Well 2006 - 2007 was yet another eventful season for Long Reef IRB's, From performing
many rescues, training a large amount of new drivers and crew to assisting with water
safety in many events.
Early in the season 2 Long Reef IRB's assisted a film company with a surfing advertisement
for a Japanese company, Although the surf was too big for the international super stars (12
foot but not for Jack) to get any good Longy action they were appreciative of the
knowledge and skills we provided,
On Australia day we provided 4 Longy IRB's for the official parade on Sydney Harbour,
which was an experience that shal l not be forgotten,
As the season went on a large amount of interest was shown for IRB's and racing
especially from many younger members keen to race, So training started many months
prior to the official ra cing season, With members such as Julie Moulden, Alice Clarke, Jane
Gilmour and Mara Scherzinger improving their skills out of sight, a newly trained Boaty
team of Adam L'Green and Angus Vowell have shown some promise; let's not forget "the
Chiefs", professionally trained at Goulburn, To the best crew and patients like Nath Gibson,
Stella Watson, Jacqui Stevenson, Aimee Lillyman, Lachy Gaad, and Monique Selosse, you
guys have developed to be able to take on any surf conditions Huey can throw at you,
Our skills developed so much so that we decided to host the first IRB carnival of the
season, It didn't take long to realise that it was a massive task to organise, (ask Doug ) and
to prepare 30 new IRB race members for racing, At the end of the day we made 4 finals
with 3 places, which shows the future of racing is extremely promising, The day was
topped off with the "I nflatable Party," which was a good wind down - a big high five to
Sean, A special mention to Jerry - LONG REEF KIOSK for his ongoing support and

Well, the 2006/2007 season was a good year for the boating fraternity with a large number
of the crews performing well, the new juniors learning the boaty trade, plus our everlast ing
vets continuing to get wet!
Some of our crews definitely upped the ante this year with the "Ikunas" (Ben O'Reil ly,
James Black, Mathew Russell-Jones, Andrew Dummett & Bruce Gaal), "Pupp ies" (Marty
Morling, John Burns, Pete Burns, Adam L'Green), and "Squashed Possums" (Kathryn Cox,
Brigitte Mason, Veronica Mair, Katie McGlynn) putting in an abso lutely huge amo unt of
work training and competing. This resulted in these crews being extremely competi tive in
the U19 and Open Women's divisions at carnivals throughout the season.
We also had the "Chicks" (Keren Leatherbarrow, Erica Wood, Gel Abrahams, Tess Short,
Alice Clarke & Rob Pearson) and the "Doggies" (James Black, Tim Ti ndale, Andrew DaSilva,
Angus Vowell) attend a number of carnivals through the season in the new U23 Women's
and U23 Men division, and the "Vets" continued to extend their attendance in the water.
We also had a number of junior U19 crews grace Longy with their presence;
• "Amoebas" (James Shaw, Stuart Garrett, Hamish Watson, James McAskill)
• "Wedges" (James Downing, Oscar Mander-Jones, Harry Benson, Campbe ll Wi ll ia m s)
In such a successful year for the boats there are so many people, or groups of people, to
thank for making it happen;
Kath and Brigitte for being so motivated to perform and improve.
Veronica and Matt in their first year for taking on so ma ny challenges with t heir
respective crews and performing extremely well.
Chris and Rob for volunteering their time so early in the mornings to help train t he
"Doggies", "Puppies" and "Squashed Possums".
Stuart Garret for jumping into multiple crews at different times (an d wi nning a
branch Silver Medall).
The parents of all the junior crews who were willing to be bus drivers!
Will Hardcastle for being a stand-in sweep, and all the other swee ps (Rob, Chri s,
Bruce, Ian) for their guidance and time in sweeping the crews.

All of the individuals and crews for putting the time and effort in to making it an

This year as in previous years the swim was run on Sunday mornings at llam. It has
become a little difficult to maintain the enthusiasm with poor weather plaguing us in the
early part of the season and Nippers engulfing the beach. Despite this we had the regu lars
turn up and compete in a fun filled close competition .
This year gear continued to be maintained at a high standard. Thanks to last years Patrol
Assessment Award we received a revolutionary new twin hull IRB. The IRB has been
received wel l members and gets great reviews.
It is great to see George Metcalfe still very competitive and taking it to the younger guys
who I am sure learn from George's vast experience in competition.
Thanks to Yamaha we were able to purchase a Rhino all terrain r.escue vehicle that
provides a rapid response to all areas of the beach. The Rhino is now fully equipped with
Defibrillator, First Aid Kit, Radio, Oxygen Airbag Resuscitator, Spinal Board and PA.
Boy and Tom gave us the first ever tie in the overall points, the fierce competition between
them over the series was exciting racing well worth being part of. In the girls Monique was
in command in most of the disciplines however Mara was making a late charge and
certainly has potential.
Gear was maintained well throughout the season and thanks to regular upgrades to Boards,
Skis, Tubes etc . over the past few years our equipment is in the great condition.
So till next season when we will do it all again on Sunday, enjoy the winter and the skiing.

boards and skis in fresh water after use and replacing gently in the racks. Please do not
drag equipment along the sand or leave out in the sun. Boards should be placed face down

Rob Urquhart 12/4/1930 - 4/11/2006
Rob Urquhart died suddenly on 4 th November, 2006 after a short illness. Rob is survived by
his brother Alistair, son Angus, Daughter La Cordukes and their families.
Rob in a very real sense was the founder of our club. At the funeral service, Life Member
Ross Thompson spoke of Rob 's involvement with Long Reef, both as a founding member
and of his involvement with Colla roy SLSC prior to the foundation of Long Reef and then
subsequently as a patrolling member, rower, sweep and Club Captain of Long Reef. Life
Mem ber, John Freedman spoke of Rob 's commitment to Rugby over many years both as a
player, selector and enthusiast .
Rob 's brother, Alistair spoke in relation to Rob's life with his parents and siblings growing
up at 33 Hay Street, Colla roy Beach and touched on the significant events which shaped
Rob 's character - the death of their Father at an early age - Alistair's War Service with the
A.I.F. in North Africa and New Guinea and consequently the necessity of Rob having to
t ake on famil y responsibilities at a young age to help his Mother in the running of t heir
home - the dislocation in those responsibilities following Alistair's return from active
servi ce, and finally the death of their Mother.
Alistai r reminisced that after the death of their Mother, Rob
continued to reside at the family home and for a period of
ti me the family home took on a new role as "Heartbreak
Hotel ", due to the number of Long Reef Members who from
th at t ime on used the home as a weekender.
Rob's son, Angus, spoke of the guidance and nurturing that
Rob had given his chi ldren and grandchildren in growing up
and of Rob's ability, by example and by word of mouth, to
impress upon them the right thing to do in any situation.
Rob 's daughter, La, highlighted Rob's activities and interests in later life with a humorous
twist, which would have been greatly appreciated by Rob.
Rob, like so many Members, was educated at the Shore School. He recruited from his
friends at school and from fellow Members at Colla roy Surf Club, the original nucleus of
Long Reef. When our Club was formed the Club colours were the same as the Shore School
and our crest was designed in a similar fashion to the crest of Shore School.
In the early days of the Club's formation, Rob's home in Hay St was used for the storage of
Club gear. Once the space underneath the tramshed on Pittwater Road was leased, that
became the " Club House". In the early days of the Club, members adopted a responsible
but carefree attitude towards their duties. They devoted their energies to building up the
Club membership, obtaining gear and equipment and attending to all the required
fundraising and administrative tasks that necessarily entailed.
Rob was a great believer in having a good time and on occasions was want to recall that
"Long Reef always had the best parties" . Rob was a keen rower and also swept. It was
through the early success of the " Boaties" that the Club gained recognition at a competiti ve
level. In t he early days competing in boat events at surf carnivals was on onerous task .
The boat had to be rowed to each carnival. It was then rowed to Manly, where it was then
lifted head high and carried across Ashburner Street from South Steyne to the Harbour, so
that rowing training cou ld take place in the Harbour during the week . Then of course the
process had to be repeated in reverse at weekends. Photos on the Club's walls
commemorate some of those early boating achievements and the rowers who took part
including Rob.
Over the years the Club made steady progress until the late 1960's when Club affa irs
probably reached th eir apex following the Club's inaugural tour of New Zealand. At that
time the Club had approximately eighty active Members. However, in the period follo w ing
that successful tour disaster struck, for a variety of reasons, the end result of which was
that the Active Club membership shrunk to twenty odd Members. At this stage, the Club
appealed to all Active Reserve Members to resume patrols, so that the burden of attending
patrols was lessened. The active Reserve Members generously responded and some are
still doing patrols today. Also at this time it was necessary for the Club Captain to perform
a very onerous role and Rob, who had not been active as a Member for many years, once
again took on the role as Club Captain, bridged the gap between old and new Members . As
a result our Club did not fail when many might have thought it would (even at Branch
leve l) . Long Reef was not the only Club to have difficulties at that time, our Branch also
had concerns as to the future of North Palm Beach and Bungan, but as it turned out, our
Club overcame the sl ump and gradually returned to prosperity.
Rob was for many years the principle speaker at the Annual Club Dinner and broadly
speaking, his speech was the same each year. First, he would speculate on how you define
a Club, is it the four wa ll s of the Club etc., then he would end his speech by tearing off his
tie, unbuttoning his shirt to reveal an old woollen march past costume and then decry that
the really important thing was the spirit of the Members. No wonder he was an inspiration
to so many.

Rob also had a heavy involvement in Rugby Union and used that involvement to once
again obtain Members for the Club. In the early days, many of the Club Members were also
prominent Rugby Union players .

Com I won't be able to make the next few patrols so if you can remind my patrol I am
watching. Also don't forget to check the Oxy, chalk the date, make sure they sign on, wear
their caps and oh yeah don't forget to relax over a bit of cake.'
Rob will be sadly missed by all Members and we extend ou r deepest sympathy to all his
loved ones, with the knowledge that this Club is a Memorial to his energy, enthusiasm,
integrity and inspiration.

and devotion on and off patrol. You have influe nced and touched so many of our lives and
you will never be forgotten.

The passing of one of our truly great members'
On Saturday 27th January, 2007 we saw the passing of one of our truly great and well
respected members. Ray Van Weeren suffered a heart attack on Sunday 21" January and
unfortunately the damage sustained was severe and he later passed away in Royal North
Shore Hospital after spending several days in a coma.
Ray has influenced and touched so many of our lives and it is hard to put into words just
how greatly he will be missed. Ray is survived by his wife Robyn , their children, brother
Ri chard and extended Van Weeren Fami ly.

Surf Life Saving at Shore continues to grow in a number of areas and the addition of
several new equipment items further assisted its smooth operation both 1n competition and
instruction. A summary of activities is outlined in this report.
Nippers Year 7
16 students joined the Year 7 Nipper ranks in 2007 under the guidance of Mr Paul with the
assistance of Year 11 students Callum Davies & Tim Scott. The boys competed as
individuals and in 3 teams named the Sharks, the Barracudas and the Dolphins.
Results for Term I 2007were as follows:
Winning Nipper Team Barracudas - Ziggy Robinson, James Dawson, Josh Clarke, Ryder
Stevens, Matthew Burgess.
Most Improved - Ryder Stevens
Best Nipper - Josh Ferris
The Year 7 Nippers enjoyed a productive term at Long Reef beach every Thursday
afternoon as well as on Saturdays with all boys demonstrating an improvement in fitness
and water skills over the season. Competition was strong between the three teams but the
Barracudas proved too strong for the others. The most prolific pOint scorer in any team
was Josh Ferris and Josh proved his mettle by performing well in the Carnival series as well
as during the Nippers training.
Nippers Year 8
The Year 8 Nippers also had an outstanding season. In total 22 boys participated in the
sport this summer. Students came from a wide spectrum of abilities; from those that were
very proficient on the boards and in the surf to the novices of the beach culture. 18 of
these students went on to achieve their Surf Education level II course held at Long Reef
beach in March under the tutelage of Mr Stephen Ford of Training Aid Australia and this
award should help them progress to the SRC next season. Mr Gow and new recruit Ms
C.Beukes were able to put together as variety of events with the assistance of Simon
Mitchell and Angus Platt.

during the week. This greatly enhanced their
board skills as they had much more water time
than usual.
Having the boys exposed to a
great variety of surf conditions, it was obvious
that they improved their skill level and
confidence greatly. Although it has become

During the season a number of boys volunteered to
become IRB crewpersons, which involves completing a
minimum of 20 hours of training and undertaking a
written and practical assessment. On attainment of
this award the boys were able to crew the Inshore
Rescue Boat (IRB), and act as water safety for the
public as well as the other Shore boys undertaking
their regular SLS activities.

Throughout the terms the boys were split into teams and competed against each other in a

Students were again encouraged to participate at local Carnivals in the years ahead as
competi tors for Long Reef. There is enormous talent in the ranks of the Shore boys and
they wou ld be highly competitive, either as individuals or in team events . The opportunity
is there for every boy to compete at the local, state and national levels . This yea r several
students did indeed achieve medals (see later in the report) whilst others discovered how
tough the competition could be at this level. Still Long Reef SLSC could tap into this talent
pool more than they have this past season .
Awards
During Term III approximately a dozen students completed their Waterways license t est at
School whilst a greater number attended the Train Small Groups course at Warriewoo d
SLSC in preparation for their role as Training Officers in the coming season . I am pleased
to note that a letter was sent to the Manly Daily praising the Senior boys for their positive
contribution to this course and for their insightful questions and observations they made
during their training.
The awards programme was again structured in such a way that Term IV 2006 was a
rather hectic term constituting 5 Bronze squads, three SRC squads, the ARC squads t rained
in read iness for their term I exam plus a large number of crewmen completed their award
at Long Reef beach.
I t has become clear that due to concerns about
personal health and safety that students from next
season will be required to buy their own
resuscitation masks, this should be a one off
purchase should the boys look after their masks.
The crewmen and drivers also benefited with the
purchase of another engine and thanks must go to
the Shore Foundation who continue to support SLS
each year with the funding of many of our
purchases.
Term I 2007 was rather quieter in terms of SRC and Bronze with on ly 2 squads presented
including 1 represent group but this was added to greatly with 5 ARC sq uads, over 20
crewmen whilst the Year 8 Nippers built on their Surf Ed level I with the Surf Educati on
Level II course in this term.
The boys are commended on their attainment of the
awards this season and many thanks go to Mr.
Matthew Cape, an old boy of Shore, who gave up his
time each weekend to assist with the training of the boys and of course Tim Middleton an
former Shore SLS captain and currently training to be a doctor as well as being one of the
senior instructors at Palm Beach SLSC. Term IV proved to be the last term of Mat's
involvement and we wish him well in his new employment.
The stude nts enjoyed great success in all of these awards due to the great organisation
and input of Mr Pa ul and Mr Meakins as well as Mr Dal Pozzo and Mr Bohlsen who obtained
their Bronze meda ll ions in Term IV. Mrs Fenwick and Mr Inches kept driving the ARC whilst
Mr Cook and Mr Weston took the crewman and drivers in both terms to their awards. We
wish Mrs Fenwick all the best as she departs SLS for another less time demanding sport
upon her return from maternity leave. We are all disappointed that Mr Bohlsen has moved
on to become the Director of Athletic Performance at Barker but we wish him all the best in
this exciting new enterprise .
Instr uction was not without its hiccoughs and the ARC in particular is proving to be a
difficu lt exam to get through with severa l students failing their exam in the week after
Summer sport finished.

Both Open Days proved to be great successes with the money raised being put back into
various 'prizes for students and one more Malibu board, Many thanks go to Mrs Neighbour
and the other parents for their organisation and hard work, Throughout the two Open
Days a number of students were recognised including those who gained proficiency shirts:

Th e competition was aided greatly by the additional equipment funded by the Shore
Foundation and donations from the barbecues organised by Mrs Neighbour, included one
race and one rescue board,
Mr Bird does a wonderful job in organising the competition
and his presence was so rely missed during Term I 2007 whilst he was on Long Service, In
place of the Junior patrol competition used in previous years an 'A' and 'B' team format
was used in events, This enabled even the weakest patrol members to score points for
their team and not feel left out of the competition,
In the parent/ son swim race in Term I, Hugo and Jonathon Rourke just pipped Miles and
Jon Platt with Tim & Phil Hosking coming third, Safety is always a concern wi th such an
event and despite the protestations of one or two parents the Term IV 2006 event was
called off due to clearly rising and dangerous surf conditions,
Carnivals
Thi s has probably been the busiest and most successful competitive
season ever for Shore SLS, A low-key inaugural Shore-Long Reef
carnival was held early in the season at a cool, wind-swept Long Reef,
The new trophy donated by Shore SLS last season was competed for
on a more equal footing with several old boys entered in the open age
group, Shore eventually proved to be too strong on the day winning
by 191 points to 177,
The patrol proficiency members included Lachlan Pooley, Miles Platt & Max Vowell who
assisted in assessing all patrols in competing for the Hugh Kesterton internal patrol
competition, Lachlan deserves special mention for his great organisation and assisting of
all of the patrols and it is in no small part due to his help that the Josh Lees captained
patrol in Term I 2007 scored a perfect 100% in their random testing by inspectors of
Sydney Northern Beaches,

During the Summer holiday a group
of about 12 competitors competed for the fourth time at
the Pittwater Hou se Schools Invitation Carnival held at
Queenscliff beach , Shore was able to improve from 3" in
2003, 2" in 2004 and 2005 to win the trophy for the first
time ever thanks to such competitors as Sam Christie,
Ben Neighbour, Joe Smith-Davies, Tom Austin, Andrew
Selosse, Harry Kindred, Will Birch, Jake Davidson, James
France, Dun can Houston, Zac Fitzpatrick, Ian Fitzpatrick,
AI Shields, Adam Roach, Pat Shields and Luke Stirton,
Three inter-schools carnivals were held in Term I 2007 with Knox hosting the first at Whale
Beach, Shore (118 points) was able to make up the lost ground from the beach events to
record a 1" place ahead of Knox (94 points)and Riverview
(98 points), The weather was fine and the surf conditions
very challenging with a 2m shore dump making the board in
particular very difficult, Ben Neighbour surfed a set wave
with great skill to win his board paddle and Josh Ferris
showed great courage to compete in the Under 15 paddle in
tough conditions, Jasper Morrison's positive outlook proved
in the end to be correct as Shore won the carnival with a
very gutsy come from behind win,
Shore hosted the second of the Inter Schools SLS carnivals of the term at Long Reef beach
on Saturday, The carniva l mirrored Riverview's format 3 age categories - Under 14, Under
16 and Under 18, Knox were unable to attend but the numbers were boosted by Barker
col lege,

On this occasion Shore had mixed results on the sand in flags
and sprints continuing the trend evident in the Knox carnival.
Shore competitors were able to register a total of 4 thirds, 3
second places and 3 first places illustrating a general
improvement in this area. Notable performers on the beach
were: Will Birch , Richard Platt, Scott Taylor, Chris Michael, Ian
Fitzpatrick, Sam Christie, Ben Hughes, Ben Stone, Richard
Hodgkinson , Pat Shields, James France, Joe Smith-Davies,.
In the Ocean events Shore again proved to be dominant as
they had been at the Knox & Pittwater carnivals but did
experience weaker results in a few events such as the Under
18s surf swims although the swim team did win first place.
Notable contributions were made by Harry Kindred, Andrew
Selosse , Chris Michael,Jack Goldsmith, AI Shields, James
Tennant, Angus Bower, Luke Stirton, Adam Roach, Tom
Taufan, Rolly Davies, Scott Taylor, Adrian Perry, Christian Cameron-Strange, Alex Zids,
Harry Martin, Will Birch, Jon Searle, Harry Kindred, Ben Neighbour, Jon Shtein, Tom Austin,
Ian Fitzpatrick, Richard Platt, Jasper Morrison, Jake Davidson, Peter Lang, James France,
Nick Chadwick , Luke Brotherton, Duncan Houston, Sam Hewitt, Tim Hosking and Sam Der
Sakissian.
Selosse, Jack Entwhistle, Jack Goldsmith, Josh Ferris and a special mention for Jonte
Searle who had his best carnival ever with 3 seconds and 2 firsts.
The Ocean events again proved the difference for Shore.
The final points were as follows:

With the final carnival of the Inter schools carnivals competed Shore achieved first on all
occasions for the first time ever. What makes this especially pleasing was that Shore did
not have the carnivals all their own way and had to come back from behind on several
occasions.
Ben Neighbour as captain deserves special praise in this regard as he led from the front
and proved to be fine role model for the younger competitors in carnivals but also with his
proficiency. Ben invariably turned up at North Curl Curl for ARC exams that he had no
direct responsibility for, organised before school training on Saturdays, took ARC and
waterways exams in Term III and organised a surfing competition early on the last
Saturday with prizes for the place getters during the end of season presentation carnival.
Shore placed behind View in the Under 14's pOints score 88 to 24, first in the Under 16s 69
to View's 35 and Barker's 8. Whi lst in the Under 18's were behind 45 to Barker's 51
followed by View 's 16 until they were able to hall in Barker with the Open/Mixed events
that finished the day.
The surf boat rowers continue to make progress under the direction and sweeping of
Steve Cox they all made great strides in their rowing this season. Indeed Stuart Garrett
managed to earn himself a Silver medal at the Branch Championships with the crew from
last year's Year 12.

It is hoped that Long Reef and Shore will ultimately benefit from an extended club house in
the not too distant future as the fabric of the current building continues to crumble before
our very eyes. This will ultimately enhance the training and enjoyment of the activity at all
levels.

Ri verview hosted the final carnival of th is term at a hot Freshwater beach on the final
Friday evening of the Summer season. Shore sent a slightly weakened (due to other
School commitments) team comprising of students from Years 7 to Year 12 to compete in
3 age categories - Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18. Knox & Barker were unable to
attend but this did not detract from a great evening. It was held in good spirits with a
gentle surf and balmy weather and fortunately for Ben Neighbour no blue bottles as
occurred in la st year's event.
Once again Shore struggled on the sand in the flags and sprints but there was an
improvement following the intensive hill and beach sprint training done over the past 8
weeks. Shore was therefore able to score 3 thirds and 2 seconds as well as 2 first places .
Notable performers on the beach were: Ben Neighbour, James France, Will Birch, Duncan
Houston, Jon Shtein, Peter Lang, Adam Roach, Rolly Davies, Harry Kindred, Andrew
The SLS photograph was once again taken at Long Reef beach with the students wearing
their SLS uniforms. The photograph is a far better reflection of what Shore SLS is all about.
David Moore 's memory has also been kept alive with weekly photos posted on the notice
board under 'Moore Photos' the photos taken by students using the water camera bought
through donations following David's tragic death a few years ago. Rob Macfarlane has
continued with his good photographic work including producing almost single handedly the
Year 12 DVD of the season that has become a tradition for the Senior SLS students and is
shown at the start of each subsequent SLS season ..
The Shore students all indebted to the HBIs volunteers provided by the club each Saturday
as well individuals such as Andrew Robson, Steve Cox, Tom Rees, Pete Selosse and Mark
Nisbett and Doug Lucas. Peter Clarke continues to be a great support to the Shore staff on
a weekly basis and we are all greatly indebted to him, he is a stable, experienced and
balanced figure at the club who never puts himself forward but is always there to assist
whether it be as carnival referee or in liaison between School and Club.

Congratulations Ross' A fantastic Year of t he Surf lifesaver for Ross
receiving Life Membership in SLSNSW and the prestigious Order of
Australia Medal.
On Monday 11th Jun e, 2007 Ross was recognised for his services to
the community with an Order of Australia Medal as a part of the
Quee ns Honour list. This medal has been awarded for Ross's
countless years of dedication and service to the community with
over 40 years of SLS and 5 years with the State Emergency Service.
Onl y around 13,000 Australians have been honoured in this way
since the award was introduced in 1972. Ross wil l be presented this
award in September, 2007 but it is a fitting tribute to a man who has given so much over
such an on-going period of time. As we know Ross was also made Long Reef's first life
Member of SLSNSW this season.

Statement o f Significa nt Accou n ting Policies
The financial report is a general purpose financial report and it has been prepared in
accordance with Accounting Standards other authoritative pronouncements of the
Australian Accounting Standards Board and the requirements of the Associations
Incorporation Act NSW.
The financial report is for an entity known as Long Reef Surf Life Saving Club Inc. as an
individual entity. The association was incorporated in NSW under the Associatio ns
Incorporation Act 1984.
The financial report complies with all Australian equivalents to International Financial
Reporting Standards (AIFRS) in their entirety.

The following is a summary of the material accounting policies adopted by the
association in the preparation of the financial report. Unless otherwise stated, the
accounting policies have been conSistently applied.
Inventories
Inventories are measured at the lower of cost or net realisable value. Costs are
allocated on either a first-in-first-out (FIFO) or average cost basis. Costs include direct
labour, direct materia ls and an appropriate amount of fixed and variable overhead
Property, Plant and Equipment
Each class of property, plant and equipment is carried at fair value or cost less any
accumulated depreciation and impairment losses, where applicable

Plan t and equipment are carried at either cost or at independent or director's valuation,
less any accumulated depreciation or amortisation applicable
The carrying amounts of plant and equipment are reviewed annually by the director to
ensure it is not in excess of the recoverable amount from those assets. The recoverable
amount is assessed on the basis of the expected net cash flows which will be received
from the assets employment and subsequent disposal. The expected net cash flows
have been discounted to their oresent values in determinina recoverable amounts

Cash and Cash Equivalents
Cash and short-term deposits in the balance sheet comprise cash at bank and in hand
and short-term depOSits with an original maturity of three months or less plus bank
overdrafts. Bank overdrafts are shown on the balance sheet as current liabilities under

association. Our audit was conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards, in
order to provide reasonable assurance as to whether the financial report is free of material

persuasive rather than conclusive evidence. Therefore, an audit cannot guarantee that all

We performed procedures to assess whether in all material respects the financial report

compliance with Australian Accounting Standards and other mandatory financia l reporting

association's financial position, and of its performance as represented by the results of its
operations and cash flows.
